Title: Painted my grills - great results
Post by: shail on June 12, 2018, 09:30:19 pm
Decided to paint my grill and fog surrounds.

Bought bumper paint from Amazon - Autotek spray can. This stuff stinks - I sprayed in the garden, I wouldn't recommend using this spray indoors / in garage.

Results are good - grey is now black!

Further heads up: if your car is anything like mine the clips are very brittle on the grills and badges. Managed to break quite a few, and I was being careful.

Also, there are 4 screws holding the top part of the grill- 2 at top and 2 at bottom.  I didn't see the bottom ones so broke the bottom clips.

Looking good, cheers for heads up. Mine desperately need doing.

Looks great. How many cans did it take? Does it just go straight on?

Used less than 1 can to do the grills and the fog surround.   The can is 500ml, so bigger than the normal rattle cans you buy in Halfords.

I just cleaned the grills with soap - needed to scrub inside each hole as there was moss growing in each of the 'corners', then sprayed straight on.  Can says no primer needed, but looking at the data sheet it recommends a 'adhesion promoter' - whatever that is!  Time will tell if it stays stuck, but for £8 im not worried.

Took a few coats and had to spray at lots of angles to get at each side of the hexagon shapes.

Good call. I was thinking about doing something similar to mine as it ages the car so badly!

Does it leave a hard finish? How did you remove the red trim from the grill?

Finish is like a normal paint.  I masked off the red line as I don't think it's easy to remove.

Just bought a can. Let’s see what happens!

Nice one!  Definitely makes a difference.  I notice most current VAGs have a glossy finish on the grilles, so maybe they are finally catching on that plastics don't stay black for ever!

I've managed to totally muller the Gti badge on the grill.  Going to have to fix it somehow, as I'm not paying £25+ for a new one!

Broke all 3 tabs on it - going to try super glue + baking soda trick.

Is it a bumper off job to remove the grills? Most of the cars I've looked at have the grey, faded grills

No.

Top part of grill:
Open bonnet.
2 screws to remove at top of grill - torx ones
2 screws just below never plate
Then it will pull out as it's clipped in - just be careful and try and find where clips are.

Bottom part
Clipped in top and bottom. You can get a screwdriver behind to push the tabs down.

Fog grill:
1 screw in each covers then just pulls off.

Did it at the weekend and pleased to report excellent results. Finish has a very slight texture to it which I think really gives an OEM look. Goes on well.

I cleaned with a brush and fairy liquid initially, then Autoglym extreme tar remover I had lying around which really helped removed all the grease.

Did top and lower grille, now thinking my fog grilles look out of place! Did my best to back-to-Black them but nowhere near as jet black as the sprayed parts now. Ran out of Autotek spray so will have to order another can if I’m gonna do them.

@shail (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=10709) did you do your fog light grilles as well?

Yea I did the fog grills too.  You must have put on more coats of paint as I had some left over, and repainted some outdoor lanterns on the house!

Yeah I did a few coats. My last coat was quite late and the damp in the air must have affected it as there was a pearly finish around the badge in the morning, so needed another blow over.

Just ordered another can to do the fog grilles, but I’m seriously tempted to do the side skirts as well,  and maybe, maaayybe, consider the rear bumper too. It goes on so well this stuff that if I can get a decent application I think it would transform the bumper.

My skirts and rear were ok.  My only concern would be the plastic of the bumpers is very different to the grill, so results may vary.

Yeah that’s a concern, but I’m also worried that the size of it might give a streaky finish. We’ll see!

Grills painted today, thanks for the info on the paint. Replaced front badge, painted wheel nut covers while I was at it.

Sorry to dig this back up, but what colour paint did you use? I’m going to buy some and do it next weekend. Yours looks excellent. Was it the standard black paint or Matt or gloss?

It was black.  Just looked up my Amazon history and it was called Autotek AT00BTB500 500ml Bumper and Trim Spray Paint - Black

It's a satin type black.

It's still going strong with no chips or fading.

Or use Plastikote satin black.  Sticks to anything with no primer and lasts for ages.  Did mine a couple of years ago and still looking good with zero stone chips, which is amazing given my average dual carriageway cruise is 85-90mph (no speed cameras where I live).  Also repainted the pin stripe in Tornado red to complete the make over  :happy2:
