Title: Recaro Wingback Seats
Post by: andyR43 on January 22, 2019, 07:27:41 pm
I have, fitted to my car, a set of Recaro wingback seats which will soon be up for sale as the car is being returned to standard before I sell it. The question I have is how much would it cost me roughly to have the front seats refurbished before I sell them?

I do have a brand new replacement leather top section for the drivers seat which just needs fitting and would want to use the existing top section as a "leather donor" to freshen up the base bolsters on the outside edges of the two seats.

Anyone have any ideas as to how much I should be looking to pay? :happy2:

Hello mate.

What condition are the wingback seats in? Any pics?

You could try and get a set of standard seats in a part-ex deal, i'm sure someone would be interested in that.

Hell, I might even be interested!

Seats are in good condition with a bit of wear to the drivers backrest bolster. I would be looking for seats in exchange if possible or I would change the seats then put these up for sale if I decided to refresh them. I'll try to get some pics up tomorrow which would probably help with a refresh valuation. :happy2:

There's a set on eBay for £2,500. They were on for £2,750 for 2 weeks and were dropped.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-GTI-TARTAN-RECARO-WING-BACK-BUCKET-SEATS/202547380672?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649

In my honest opinion it's crazy money for a set of seats.

You never know, you might be able to get that for them as a straight sale.

£2,500 is expensive and not achievable for those particular seats.

Here's some pics showing the condition of the seats:-

And here's the new seatback cover:-

Not sure whether or not to refresh using new seatback cover or refresh using new leather and sell the cover.

Any thoughts?

Ah, yours are leather... Sorry, I assumed Tartan.

I've personally toyed with the idea of buying a set and having them re-trimmed to match my tartan interior (if even possible).

I think it's somewhat of a design flaw of the seats bolster that they wear so easily.

Not sure what you shoudl do mate.  :drinking:

I have the standard seats in my GTI with Leather (heated).

The side bolster (airbag side) and the seat base bolster is knackered as most are and the foam isn't "as new" as I can feel the seat base (must have been a right FB as the car has only done 39,000 miles).

Anyway - as I am getting the car back to factory fresh condition as much as possible I have my drivers side in to get all new leather on the bolster sides with new foam where needed. That is going to cost me approx £200-£250+VAT to do. So if you were to have all new leather on both I think a budget of £400+VAT per seat wouldn't be far off.

However, if it were me I would retrim them with tartan centres and leather sides or just sell them as is. Are they heated?

If I wasn't trying to keep my car stock I would be tempted by these - feel free to drop me a DM.

Cheers for the info on potential costs.

Seats are heated and will be staying full leather as a full retrim with tartan inserts wouldn't make sense as I am selling them and the car. :happy2:

Where are you located?

Did you have a figure in mind as is?

I'm located in South Somerset. I haven't really thought about a price yet as I am mulling over my options. I would have thought around £1500 plus standard leather seats would be a reasonable price. I'll do a bit of research though on what they sell for before putting them up for sale.

Saw those! 2k man...

Not sure I like the stitching. Isn't quite OEM.

Would look so much better with an embossed GTI.

Defo. Very showy!

Might look into rs4 seats and what 'works' in the golf.

I like the wing backed seats but I have to say I really like the look of the standard seats, find they hold well and are really comfortable.

I bet those covers weren't cheap!  A new upper cover for an Edition 30 is £800+VAT...plus torso bolsters, plus heater element, plus back rest springs (mine are f'cked) etc etc.  I priced up close to £2K to rebuild one seat.  Ridiculous.  VW don't/won't sell you a complete seat.

Wow that's crazy!! :surprised: That's why I'm deliberating between using the cover or just retrimming the side bolster and selling the cover. I don't think the wear to just one bolster warrants using the cover.

Sorry to drag up an old post but do you remember what you paid for that new backrest cover? I'm about to become the owner of some R32 leather Recaros and the drivers bolsters are looking pretty sad. I'm tossing up between trying to get it repaired or putting a whole new cover on it.

Hi what company are you using for retrim?

Mental money but I would love to get mine back to factory fresh, literally the only tired part of the car...
From memory I think when I enquired years ago VW has to have the Ed30 seat covers made to order hence the excessive retail price!!!

I imagine shipping and import duty will add a bit, but this link maybe of interest to you...

Not found a standard gti tartan seat cover on there yet.

I’m considering wingbacks. Have seen that Vauxhall Corsa VXR seats fit in to a Mk5??? Dam sight cheaper and I know a very good and cheap trimmer that can add tartan too

They look like a much smaller seat with less of the support compared to the wingbacks. I've gone with a bucket seat for just the driver on a Sparco subframe.
