Title: xs2man's Mk5 GTI Edition 30...
Post by: xs2man on August 11, 2016, 11:35:23 pm
So, I picked this up yesterday.  And I love it already.  Drove it home last night (late) in the pissing rain, in the dark, at the speed limit (mostly).  Had the kids all day too, so only had it out for a little while, but not had a chance to blast it yet.

Anyway, have some of my own pics now, finally.  So thought I'd pop up a quick thread on the car.  Plans are currently to do something with this.  However, we will see if it pans out or not.  Hopefully so.  Certainly wont be a lightning quick build though, as I will enjoy it as is for a while first.

So, pics...

Pretty decent spec on this too...

MFD2 Sat nav head unit
Xenon self levelling headlights
Headlight washers
Auto lights
Auto wipers
Come home lights (Think that's what its called), headlights come on when opened in dark & stay on when locked in dark
ipod dock under centre console
Half leather seats with heated fronts
Cruise control
Folding mirrors with puddle lights
Auto dim rear view mirror
Tyre pressure monitoring system
Rear parking sensors
Parrot hands free phone kit
H&R 30mm lowering springs
APR Carbonio induction kit
Miltek st/st cat back exhaust (Resonated, not loud just a nice note)
Tinted rear windows

Looks like a nice clean example mate, good choice on the colour :) Nice set of mods and extras from the factory too. Enjoy!

Thanks guys...

I have done my first "upgrade" already though. If you could call it that. Updated the Satnav firmware, unlocked it, and put in the latest 2016 (V13) maps. Still looks dated as hell, but will do for now at least. Until I decide if I want to upgrade again and go for an RNS510...

Very nice mate, that's my 2nd fav colour after black  :happy2:

Have fun.

Anyway, had it out today, had the wife and kids with me, so couldn't hoof it anywhere.  But I did manage to get some bird to a dirty big sh*t all over it.  It was minging.  Anyway, excuse for a clean / pics I guess.  (Couldn't be hooped doing the wheels though, and it was starting to rain).

Sounds as though you've got a well specified example there! It is manual or DSG?

What are the plans you make mention of?!
Title: Re: xs2man's Mk5 GTI Edition 30...
Post by: xs2man on August 12, 2016, 09:51:45 pm
It's a manual.  I've been in autos for too long now, and while I have nothing against a DSG box, it's nice to change a gear.

Plans aren't set in stone.  Thinking full polybush kit (including anti-lift), R32/S3 brakes, decat and remap (already has turbo back miltek and APR induction).  Maybe H&R ARB's too depending on how the poly's work out.  And then enjoy...

I can well understand! I didn't expect to like DSG, but I did. I tried a manual Pirelli before mine, and it was very good but the DSG won me over. Don't get me wrong, I miss the 2nd gear boost to the line and then changing to fourth, or skipping gears down the box to match braking.

I like your plans - have done most of these except the decat and remap! All of those seem to improve on the ED30's weak points IMHO. The brakes as standard are poor for a 230+bhp car. It also rolled a bit more than I thought it would as standard, but that was coming from my very modded mkiv.
Title: Re: xs2man's Mk5 GTI Edition 30...
Post by: xs2man on August 12, 2016, 11:24:39 pm
I'm in no way adverse to an auto box.  I really love the one in my BMW, but then again, that's the ZF8 speed box, which is one of the very best auto boxes in the world.  Leagues ahead of the 6 speed in my old 335d.  And all my Range Rovers (all both of them) had auto's, as well as one of my A4's, lol.

And I would have had a DSG if one had come up with the right spec and price.  But as it was, this car was right spec and price, and relatively close.  And I didn't care so much about the transmission that I would leave an otherwise tidy example.  Of course, I'll no doubt have to do the clutch and flywheel with the manual, instead of a DSG remap.  But I can live with that.

As said on Eastside - looks a tidy example.
Handy to have gotten one with some mods already done.
Solid sounding plans, too!

Seems like a very well cared after motor! Good luck with it and hope you can enjoy it a lot! :drinking:

I'd do brakes and suspension with anti-roll bars included. I fitted H&R 26/22 mm with soft setting at the front and hard setting at the rear. Most here seem to prefer stronger bars and chose the 28/24 mm version. I don't know how are the stronger bars so I really can't compare. I use it as a daily and I'm not aiming at a full track car.

Yeah, already having the exhaust, intake and springs were a big selling point to me, as I never intended to keep it standard anyway.

Yeah, wasn't sure which bars to go for.  It's not a daily driver for me, but then I will be unlikely to track it either.  I just want it sorted for when I want to play really.  Probably go for similar to what your saying anyway.

Wasn't planning to do the shocks either, but ECP appear to do B8's at what looks like an incredibly competitive price.  I may just have to do them too.  Probably needing done anyway.

Congrats look like a very nice Ed30, if you don't mind me asking did you buy it via dealer or was it a private sale.

It was a private sale.  Wasn't advertised anywhere, as far as I know, one local car forum.

So my first "real" mod is done.  Front brakes upgraded to S3 items with genuine 345mm discs and pads.  Nice little upgrade, and as soon as I learn how to not faceplant the steering wheel at every junction, I'll be happy.  And maybe look at the rears too.

Yesterday I finally treated the glass...

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs2man_photos%2FCar_stuff%2F20160918_165958_zps7kzyjmik.jpg&hash=f6d8af9bc67e8b5e54ba645f7f6dbede2276c4be)

Followed by new wipers all round.

Then today, finally got round to getting stuck into the wheels.  Not had a chance yet since I bought it.  They came up OK, but the finish on the refurb isn't the best.  Would ideally like them done again, and in a colour less "flat".  Something still silver I would think, but just just a bit more, well, pop I guess?
Anyway, the rest of the car also got a quick clean yesterday for the glass, so just some new pics...

And the S3 stoppers behind clean wheels, lol...

Also, the other day, I changed out all the interior bulbs for LED ones (well, all but the drivers side footwell bulb, that's a pig to pop out, and I was having trouble with the glovebox bulb so the one for the footwell is in there just now).  And the number plate bulbs.

Looks ok, and easy enough to do.  But not something I would likely be bothered to do again.  The LED's are a bit "cold" I feel.  Still, done now.

S3 brakes are a good upgrade compared to standard. Know what you mean about the interior LED bulbs - I went for red bulbs in the footwells which maybe balances the coldness of the overhead ones.

What's next on your list?

Gorgeous car :happy2: Great spec too

And it's even in the best colour! (Not that I'm biased or anything!)

Just a word of warning on the decat. I fitted a full TurboBack 3 inch exhaust with decat to mine and it made lots of nice power and a ridiculous amount of noise!

But the exhaust fumes are overpowering. I cart my kids around in the car and they often have their windows open. Really the car is just too stinky to drive with the windows open :scared:

I had my original Volkswagen cat on a 3in flange (for MOT purposes) so I put that back on the car. It was sooo much more pleasant to drive but the 2 inch pipe diameter and standard cat were really restrictive on the power.

So I bought a 3 inch high flow cat from magnaflow ( unbelievable value at just £100!) it gave a fantastic result with no more nasty exhaust fumes and almost all the power back that the standard cat had stolen :happy2:

I'm really pleased with it and I think it's a perfect compromise!!

Anyways, just my two cents worth :happy2:

Enjoy the car it looks to be a stunner!
Regards,
Dave

Next on the list is probably decat.  Then clutch, then remap.

I fancy a more up to sat nav unit, but don't fancy the expense of a RNS510 + BT.  So have been looking at the RNS315.  But since I don't have MFSW, or highline clocks, I may just go for one of the Kenwood units.

Thanks for the info.  To be honest, the idea behind the decat is purely on price.  But at £100 for a high flow cat, I could be tempted.  My MOT tester is very friendly, so decat isn't a problem there.  But if I can't really drive with the windows open, that could be a potential deal breaker.  Noise I'm not too worried about, but then I do a lot of dual carriageway driving, so perhaps it would be too droney for me.

Cheers.

Yes, it's the spec that sold me on it.  Well, that and the price.  I've seen higher mileage, lower spec ones for significantly more than I paid for this one.  And this has had some decent work carried out recently too (timing chain and cam follower etc...).  So I am really happy with it.  Should do me for the next couple years anyway.

I had no issue with motorway drone even with the decat, so hopefully you should be ok there :happy2:

Yeah, the Magnaflow is such good value you could trial fit the decat. And then if you're not happy with it down the road you're only looking at about £200 (my place charged me 220euro to supply and fit the cat - needed flanges welded on etc) all up to have the magnaflow fitted :happy2:

So, with the 18's off the Alhambra, and my wheel refurbisher having a deal on this month where he will do a full set of wheels for £130 inc VAT.  I thought it would be rude not to take him up on the offer.

So today, I got round to sticking the B8 wheels on the ED30.  Always wondered what they would look like, with the better offset and all that.

I quite like them on there.  Tyres could do with coming back down to 225's instead of 235's.  Don't know if there is any rubbing yet either as aint driven it yet.  But they do seem to sit better.

Colour could be a few shades lighter too.  Ferric Grey would have been nicer in hindsight.

The A4's sit really well man, kinna' look very like the OEM Pirelli wheels from a distance particularly

Offset looks just right, kinna where mine sit and I've always been happy with that. Not too many people take a chance on other VAG OEM wheels on MK5s particularly in 18"s, but those are cool :happy2:

Of course it helps that I had them kicking about anyway.  They were on my Alhambra as its summer wheels, but since it now wears the winter wheels and tyres, these were sitting in the garage anyway.

I still need to sort out a set of winters for this though.  But could be tempted to just put winter tyres on these, and get new summers for the Alhambra (and probably go down to 17" on that, rather than 17" on the ED).

Ok, so I guess I better put some new pics up, since photobucket got aids or something.

Luckily, I have just given the car a wee wash / polish / wax, so is looking respectable for one.
