Has anyone had any experience changing the high pressure sensor on the aircon pipes near the aircon compressor? Is it easier removing the pipe work from the car to get to the sensor? My car is a 58 reg Pirelli Gti and I've heard the later cars have a removable sensor compared to the early models which couldn't be removed from the pipe work?

I've done this on my Mk5 GTI DSG '05 plate. No need to remove any parts but you will need a 'crows foot' socket attachment, a long extension bar and a ratchet.
The pressure switch - down to the left as you look into the engine bay, between the radiator and the alternator and mounted vertically off the aircon pipe - is a screw off/on fitting with an electrical connector on top that fits onto a Schrader-type valve (like a car tyre valve) on the pipe, that allows the switch to be removed with minimal loss of refrigerant.
You need the crows foot as it grips the hex body of the switch from the side (you can't stick a socket on it) and the extension bars allow you to work from above to loosen/remove the old one and then refit the new one.

The only bit I was unsure about is that the new pressure sensor is slightly different to the one that's on the car, but TPS assured me it's just because it's the updated version..

Relatively simple job and my mate even managed it with just a stubby spanner so seems it's possible without a crows foot attatchment although deffo fiddly with spanner

How much was the switch?

I might try with a stubbie first... My local tool shop only sells the crows feet ones as a set and are about £25..
The pressure swith was £52 from TPS.. Think they are £72 from VW!

Yep, but you have a 2-year warranty on the one you bought from TPS... So not all bad!

Managed to change the switch easily with a crows foot spanner.. The new revised switch only needs a 24mm socket!
Air con re-gassed as a small amount had leaked due to the faulty old switch..
Luckily the compressor is fine too...
Icy cold aircon now!

Epic thread bump… but I had a go at this earlier and it ended badly.
Loosening the sensor was a bit tighter than I expected and I ended up breaking the hard line. Cue sudden spray of refrigerant. Felt pretty bad as obviously this is not good for the environment.
At the moment I am trying to pin down which line will need to be replaced. Does anybody have a parts diagram that covers it? I’ll be getting a garage to do for sure…
Edited to add, I did notice some AC dye under the sensor and it didn’t look too old. Gut feeling is it had been cross threaded in the past.

For the benefit of others, the AC man I spoke to said that the official procedure to replace the sensor is to drain the system, despite it having its own valve. I think I was unlucky, but I can see why they would say that.
If you are replacing the sensor and not draining, at the very least wear some eye protection/gloves and have some towels handy.

Is the system pressurised? If so, and the pipe is turning, you really need to empty the system before trying to replace, because the risk of breaking the pipe is so high. These are aluminium I think.
In your situation, I’d probably buy a replacement hose and sensor in anticipation and then get the system drained, replace the hose/sensor and then refill all done by a professional. You can either buy second hand or new. If buying second hand, make sure that the sensor comes off the pipe or has already been removed, otherwise the same thing could happen again.
Buying used hose, new sensor and taking to an AC place is probably most sensible in your situation. If hose is used you will need to buy o-rings, but they are cheap. If you must try yourself (I wouldn’t advise if the sensor is turning the pipe) wear eye protection and gloves.
