Title: All-Out Mk5 GTI: Track Car Build
Post by: joms6r on March 20, 2016, 10:08:21 pm
Thought it was about time I started my second build thread on this forum!

I’ll try to keep this updated as often as possible, but if anyone’s on Instagram and wants to follow @joms6r (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=11837) for the latest updates.

I’ll start with the background – Last January I brought my first VW, a Mk6 Golf R. Over the following months I quickly decided the standard 270hp wasn’t enough and before long it was running an R-Tech stage 2+ map with 360hp/380ft-lbs. To compliment this newfound power, I upgraded the brakes to Lamborghini 8 pots and a few other bits.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Foo198%2Fjoms6r%2F00000000-0000-0000-0000-00000000016F_zps7odctwis.jpg&hash=f6dcc3d9c39233966e24316321f6bc1a876a5292)

Build thread here: http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,95097.0.html

While I love driving the Mk6, I’ve always wanted to have a fully track focused car. If money wasn’t an issue I’d have converted the Mk6, but unfortunately I don’t have unlimited funds, and want to get on the property ladder in the not too distant future, so I decided not to take the Mk6 any further.

So next thing to decide was what car next? Always liked R26 Meganne’s and had a Renaultsport Clio as a run around for a year or so. They get a fantastic write up and are 2 a penny at the ring it got me thinking. Although the Clio never let me down, there was always that niggle of French cars having poor reliability and that I would have to sell all the bits I’ve got for my Mk6 and start again, I was put off that idea.

That led me on to the second choice – a Mk5 GTI. After owning the Mk6 I got to know the car quite well and with the Mk5 having basically the same engine and running gear, all the upgrades, knowledge and contacts I have accumulated can be transferred over. Along with seeing the Garage Midnight and GTI Christian’s cars to name a couple I was sold on the idea.

During the following month or so I decided on the basic spec of what I wanted out of the car. I decided I’d miss the AWD of my Mk6 so and AWD conversion was on the cards. Power wise the 360hp of the Mk6 is staggering, but I wanted to take it to the next level so the aim will be around 500hp, which along with some weight saving should give it some poke.

Fast forward a couple of months and the first piece of the project was purchased. Not the car like most people would start with but the engine. I wanted a CDL due to the improved cams and better flowing head. The unit I picked up came as a complete unit with a turbo, gearbox and all the ancillaries.

Picked by my mate in his trusty Mk4 GTI:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Foo198%2Fjoms6r%2FIMG_0370_zpsgkpxfcdu.jpg&hash=596b21a5abcfe19b988b3e03c4fca7fbbfb95f59)

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Foo198%2Fjoms6r%2FIMG_0374_zpsgggwseuj.jpg&hash=f710d7985da21425a0837a163c9d12b0833a1e41)

Most of the bits that it came with will not be needed as the engine was soon sent off to JP at JNL Racing. I considered leaving the engine alone as they have been ran at 450hp+ without many issues and would save me a decent chunk of cash. However with the type of use I want to put it through as well as the potential of going for an even higher power figure further down the line, I decided it was best to get it done before it went in so it is as bulletproof as it can be.

Few pics courtesy of JNL Racing:

Soon after the engine as dropped off one of my best mates Sean (also on the forum) decided he was selling his turbo that he originally brought for his 20V turbo Mk2 GTI dragcar build as it was “just not big enough” in his words.

His old build thread: http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,95563.0.html

His new one: http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,105139.0.html

Pic of his current project:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FSA_Engineering%2FMK2_R30%2FIMG_0879_zpshsjxsl6t.jpg&hash=bae61caa25db3e01d35c1aa4d169d05f543c3fd3)

So although my wallet had taken a battering with the engine that month, I agreed to buy his GTX3071r.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Foo198%2Fjoms6r%2FIMG_0440_zpszzvfsg9z.jpg&hash=dc07bcb95b45d15b8f19aa660779e47dac4dda5d)

Had to take advantage of Black Friday sales, so picked up some SuperPro aluminium lower arms from AKS.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Foo198%2Fjoms6r%2FIMG_0564_zpspqb7owga.jpg&hash=9c3b8566da9f0d0e0ceae70db3101f1d3f702ceb)

Before I purchased a shell, I wanted to get most of the big bits ready so they could be bolted straight in. After popping up AKS and mentioning I was looking for some bits, Alex sent me a link to a low mileage S3 rear subframe with Haldex included. This was duly picked up a few days later:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Foo198%2Fjoms6r%2FIMG_0885_zps5pbrnsmd.jpg&hash=39bd56bb243e81f96a5d3ecd0e2935225c3b0df0)

I want the whole car to be polybushed so the rear end needed to be stripped down for that anyway. Managed to get a complete rear SuperPro polybush kit at the Autosport show at trade cost which saved a few pounds. While I was at it I got the majority of the arms and brackets blasted and powdercoated.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Foo198%2Fjoms6r%2FIMG_1096_zpsvbwyal3n.jpg&hash=421c9e5a4572dbf6da845a73a5e5d98a2d4cea0b)

Whilst the rear subframe was apart I thought I’d have a quick look on ebay to see how much an aluminium diff cradle would set me back. I managed to find a fairly cheap one but couldn’t seem to find a definitive difference between the weight compared to the steel one I already had. But I brought it anyway as I want the car to be as light as possible. Here are the differences below:

Steel:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Foo198%2Fjoms6r%2FIMG_1161_zpsxpdexqno.jpg&hash=c1b7d81b9e141c4a9aebbbe05dd38c683774afce)

Aluminium:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Foo198%2Fjoms6r%2FIMG_1163_zpsr99vcudl.jpg&hash=5e63af3c3369e448a1c71f6919bd602cfff34cdf)

Aluminium diff cradle cleaned up and sealed:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Foo198%2Fjoms6r%2FIMG_1165_zpsdffxinaf.jpg&hash=8f40cd3a1035bc21d2d1269cdc634208ecbeb04e)

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Foo198%2Fjoms6r%2FIMG_1164_zpsnepathvh.jpg&hash=e6bbcac7148f5a07bea165613e56804843efcd7b)

All going back together with the SuperPro bushes:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Foo198%2Fjoms6r%2FIMG_1198_zps646hoc6f.jpg&hash=b3340c3fbdab1d00976cc2cf6b4c88a9e8bf5c77)

As I mentioned earlier, the plan was to wait until I had the majority of the bits together before looking for a shell. However… after the usual weekly scan of eBay/Auto Trader/Gumtree I came across a Steel Grey Mk5 GTI about 20 miles away from where I live. It seemed to tick all the boxes being a manual, 3dr, non sunroof so thought it was worth a look.

…And this sitting on my drive a few hours later:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Foo198%2Fjoms6r%2FIMG_1254_zpsrq1vhn1e.jpg&hash=350299daca34c2e4b19f21ce5afa91a3b2389ae2)

The car was exactly what I wanted – There seems to be plenty on black/red GTI’s about but Steel Grey ones seem harder to come by. The colour should also contrast nicely with the carbon panels I hope to add in the future.

The car itself is a little tatty round the edges, but solid mechanically so should be the perfect base for what my plans are. (Would feel bad pulling apart a minter!) It drives nicely and when I plugged it into VCDS nothing major was reported which was a bonus.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Foo198%2Fjoms6r%2FIMG_1294_zps7p6fo2ca.jpg&hash=4e39e2b7aad29a8ff3b6bbc7180a30f918f54645)

Before I did anything to the car I decided I wanted to get a benchmark of what it could do in standard trim. First thing I decided to weigh it, so took the car down to a friendly local scrapyard and it came back at 1370kg with ¼ tank of petrol in it.

Luckily there was a RWYB at Santa Pod the following day so I managed to get a few runs in. My best quarter mile time was 14.8, which matched the quoted time for a standard Mk5 GTI on www.fastestlaps.com website:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Foo198%2Fjoms6r%2FIMG_1334_zpsyonumf77.jpg&hash=8e60458294053cfb365ee8c60d51aa513c098ae6)

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Foo198%2Fjoms6r%2FIMG_1320_zpsrwglbgaw.jpg&hash=352dfe97592e64bcea81e901f7a62e536618a399)

And that pretty much brings things up to date. Starting gutting the interior today so I’ll get a few pics up once that’s finished. Also if anyone needs any interior bits let me know! aha

Bit more weight saving last night:

Soundproofing under the bonnet removed and most of the rear seats and trim gone:

A very interesting read and I like your approach and commitment?

You say "Track Built car" are you looking at a particular area of the track to achieve a record or is it ultimate track fun car?

Quick update for today: Still stripping various bits of interior. Before the standard GTI seats were sold I thought I'd weigh them out of interest. 74.1kg they come in at so a decent bit of weight saving there. Hoping to replace them with a pair of Recaro Pole Positions:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Foo198%2Fjoms6r%2FRecaro-Pole-Position-ABE-Seats-2-square_zpsatvk3gtg.jpg&hash=72306e9e53bf8f9b4bdafc00d8c1f5fd5f0d8c99)

Also wondered how this thing managed to get itself in there:

I should have worded that better, 75kg for fronts and backs. Bet you can't wait, where did you get yours from out of interest?

Bought mine through Storm Developments (I sold the owner my RS4 seats). Used their trade account.
Think it goes back through Capital Seating.
http://www.capitalseating.co.uk/productdetail.asp?pid=207&type=s&appgrpid=16&appid=62&rid=

I paid £1800 on the nose delivered. Retail seats are £630(something) + vat each, £133 for side mounts and £85 for mounts (?)
I paid about £520 per seat plus vat and other bits plus shipping

Haven't done much more to the car lately so there hasn't been much to update on here. Got a hectic few weeks coming up but after that it should be full steam ahead.

Had to move the car the other day without any interior so had to get a bit creative with the drivers seat:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Foo198%2Fjoms6r%2F54C34F1C-3A16-4DE8-AB71-6D4BE18E17C1_zpsxyusaqzr.jpg&hash=06968b599dbda62b3575118696ca7fc67cbe03f8)

Picked up 2 major pieces of the AWD conversion on Friday, R32 fuel tank and S3 prop. Gave the tank a quick clean up yesterday and it came up a treat, and i'll give the prop and lick of paint before it goes onto the car. Need to pick a few brackets and mounts up from TPS then the rear end will be ready to swap over.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Foo198%2Fjoms6r%2F00B5FB89-06E3-47A5-AEF8-70254CE57186_zpsatwugssz.jpg&hash=6f20e8b5066dda7ad7801cd80041f9ec140061dc)

Next on the list is to find an S3 box and O/S/F drive shaft ready for when the engine is back.

As Alex said, managed to pick up a 02Q and transfer box last month which was swiftly dropped off at AKS for some goodies. Going to have all the strengthening mods done as well as having a diff fitted at the same time.

Also had some good news from JP who's building the engine, after some long delays with parts the motor should be buttoned up by the end of the week all being well!

So after a long wait, delayed parts and a fair few quid I finally have the engine back!  :jumping: :jumpmove: So all being well over the next few weeks the standard BWA will be coming out along with the baby K03 and the new beast will be going in. Still need to pick up a few bits, mainly engine mounts and manifold kit so I can get everything bolted on before I drop it in.

Few engine p0rn pics:

The B16's are back at Bilstein HQ too, so once they've been fully refurbished and sent back the rear subframe can be swapped for the S3 one.

What was up with the b16's?

I brought them second hand and they just needed a refurb really.

Wots the spec of the engine

Too much to list really, but fully forged, head ported with oversized valves, runner flaps deleted, oil pump mod.. the list goes on!

Damn that engine looks good!! Have you mentioned what turbo your gonna run? ...

Brought a GTX3071r off a mate, although i'm already thinking about something bigger lol

Thought it's about time I posted in here as I haven't put any updates on in a while.

Since the last update I've been slowly bolting the various bits back onto the engine. As I'm not running AC, I decided to cut down the bottom half of the alternator bracket where the AC pump normally sits:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Foo198%2Fjoms6r%2FA5D8C041-38CF-45E7-A704-4C9A83BFB5BB_zpsvzohshba.jpg&hash=3aaec8b3caa379d21c250bc41fc42b6dc3092b46)

Every little helps in the quest for weight saving!

Back from powder coating along with a few other bits:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Foo198%2Fjoms6r%2F5E3886A1-C069-4A9E-B259-EFDBCEFC9BED_zps8nzqxafx.jpg&hash=23c9a2101c4af734e3cfce320608ce1adadc588f)

And picked up a shorter aux belt along with a few other bits:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Foo198%2Fjoms6r%2FC005D064-C93E-42EA-94CA-1E23D3E817F4_zpshj6wwnum.jpg&hash=06433d0da72c0be7a443c2e2fdb608b7a6d98e3f)

Ordered a set of new style RS3 injectors from VAG Fuelling Solutions and was very impressed with the kit. Well packaged and came with everything needed to get them working including a new injector loom. Been told they could be good for 500hp so will be interesting to see how well they flow.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Foo198%2Fjoms6r%2F18A2CF8F-B627-4753-8F5E-634FC008F3F1_zps523a1ece.jpg&hash=dbde4221dfd1b65138f799058240230620fbd300)

Injectors in waiting for the inlet manifold to go back on:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Foo198%2Fjoms6r%2F20C30CD7-2197-49F8-A33F-12DCA7FC52F4_zpsz2xgk4lv.jpg&hash=4ddd395032ad4b8068d45c47375fec441f8af27a)

Next it was time to get the turbo manifold ordered. After seeing Hurdy's Nortech kit perform well plus a few others, I'd already made my mind up what kit I wanted. All this (minus the turbo) was ordered via AKS:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Foo198%2Fjoms6r%2F3E89E0D7-7DA2-4361-99A4-F38E733F3FEB_zpseyxljase.jpg&hash=eb9c2b64fcdb4e641a5c374e176dc5002a493fc7)

Ever since they came out a couple of years ago, I've always fancied a set of Fifteen52 TurboMac's. An almost brand new set came up for sale so I brought them as a bit on an impulse purchase. Test fitted them on the car and loved them, they clear the brakes and strut nicely. Only issue if that they stick out the arches a bit so I'm unsure what I'm going to do with them.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Foo198%2Fjoms6r%2FCD53B2F4-1E29-446D-9CFF-F5ED09BBF9A8_zpsrhvoxroo.jpg&hash=dd6386ad4766a8e842e062900581dae03a9e29f8)

Then last week another set of wheels came up for sale; a set of 18x8 TD's with some NS2R's already on. They came off a MK5 GTI so I know already that they will fit, but my only concern was whether they will clear the 8 pots or not without spacers. I picked them up anyway but still need to get a chance to test fit them and see.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Foo198%2Fjoms6r%2F6023A29F-0A35-44BD-8C9D-B9845F83FEC9_zps30kjexjd.jpg&hash=fb2335843191d5a6074c94f1b30c133e315d3220)

That brings things pretty much up to date. Still waiting on the coilovers to come back from Bilstien HQ, after they've already been sent back once due to the adjusters not being fixed correctly. Once they are back the S3 rear end, fuel tank and prop can all be mounted and the standard engine can then be removed. Hopefully the Nortech kit shouldn't be much longer too, a few hold ups as apparently they have been relocating premises over the last couple of weeks.

As I mentioned in my first post, feel free to follow my Instagram @joms6r (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=11837) as I keep that updated more than this.

So.. Should see some good progress on the car next week. Picked the B16's up from AKS yesterday after being sent back twice! All new seals, oils and the adjusters have been freed up. I've got next week off work so hope to get the S3 rear end in and possibly start taking the standard engine out. After many delays the Nortech kit should also be delivered to AKS next week too!   :jump move:

Moved the car into the garage today a few miles away which was a bit sketchy to say the least!  :rolleye:

Lovely build. In my eyes this is how I would do it if I had the cash. Just out of curiosity, I can see you have painted your alternator, did you tape cover/tape areas up before painting or have you just sprayed the whole thing?

U say the turbomacs stick out a bit? Would it be worth rolling the arches a bit u think? Having a similar problem...bumpy roads becoming a nightmare!!!

I was wondering when I saw engine pics,
if this was a track build, why the stock oil cooler. Wouldn’t you go for a front mount for optimal cooling?
Also, why the 8 pot calipers. You are not really shedding weight( important ) over stock with that big a caliper and a good 4 pot with good pads will stop this car in a second. I run 390whp and my Alcon monoblocs are more than enough.
