Not looking for a debate on which brand is best, i am hoping to order my R888's this week. :pomppomp:
Wheel size is 17in 7.5j 45 ET.
What i would like to discuss is what is the best size and rating for this tyre with our GTI's
I am confused mostly with the ratings they are either R rated ZR rated medium GG and lots of other letters.
Its like i am lost in sesame street.

Get a 225/40/18. Most common size and therefore cheaper and easier to find.
235s in R888 are REALLY wide on a 7.5j, as they're more like 240+ - you may get a bit of strange sidewall flex.
-
....
Be prepared to hear sounds from the R888's which will make you think you're driving an army lorry! At least that's how it sounds inside Hurdy's car. Personally I love the sound but not all your passengers will if you use them on the road as well.
-
Oh, and you want a "92Y XL" - GG is the road legal compound tyre. Also known as List B.

Thats what i was after :happy2: also i was going to go for 225, but could i get away with 215 on 7.5j without compromising the handling as this would give me extra arch clearance obviously. :happy2:

And maybe 17's not quite so baggy..... :booty: :pomppomp: :signLOL:

Also on camskills they onl have 94 w xl is this spec no good. :chicken:
-
D'oh! Cheers Dave...
Are you set on R888s, because they aren't the best for our cars, you know?
-
Read the title. :P
I am not set on them but i really cant afford to spend anymore than what these cost at the moment, and i need to get them before the baby arrives or my life wont be worth living.
-
What's a 225/45/17 cost?
-
£ 137 on camskills :happy2:
-
I've found a P-Zero Corsa and a Dunlop DZ02G for less and the same, respectively. PM'd who to call.
-
Tom got some P Zero Asymetrico's which have about 3mm left on them in 225/45/17 gathering dust, got some other perf tyres in the same size. Bought them for my Mk4 Santa's and never got fitting them.... Couple of beer vouchers gets them and they're localish (sort off)
You'll maybe only get a couple of track days out of them but they end in a vowel so they must be good!
I know you're looking for proper stuff but if you get stuck......
-
and u could bring them saturday to the rr day

Same wheel as my 17" Team Dynamics TC :happy2:
The 225/45/17's fit easily under my arches and don't rub at all. Even at the 'ring I was rub free :chicken:
The TOYO R888's are GG (slightly harder wearing than the really soft GGG tyre)rated and also XL (extra load) rated, which is what you want for the GTI.
I wouldn't advise having these on in winter, as even TOYO say they are prone to cracking at sub zero conditions and need to be stored above 5oC.

Good thinking! - if this was the Army you'd be a General!
-
See how you get on with your phonecall.
Otherwise on Camskill in you can get Kumho V70A's for similar money and they're very well thought of. Medium compound should suit.
-
Thanks guys. Hurdy have you heard anything about the Dunlops mike has mentioned. :happy2:

Dave these could be great for me even just for winter if nothing else, as i plan to put the works into hibernation as soon as possible. :happy2:
I will ring you this evening sir when i have less woman cackling in my ear. my house is full of mothers and Grandma's :rolleye:
-
The Dunlops grip as well as R888s, but last longer - however unless you get a deal, they're generally £50 a tyre dearer - so it's swings and round-a-bouts.
-
A quick write up of the Dunlops below

Not bad and I may try them once the R888's have expired

you have never driven an army truck then lol. the last thing you hear is the tyres lol-. more like a screaming engine whilst getting vibrated to death by the solid suspension :scared:.
Toyo R1R coming out is the question?
-
Nah - if you're running dedicated track rims, you may as well go sh!t or bust and get something stupid.
-
Robin sat in mine at the 'ring. The R888's do make a lovely noise though. Miss it now I'm on winter tyres :sad1:
-
That lovely velcro ripping sound as they go around corners... I can't wait for spring.
-
Dont go any more than 225 on a 7.5J rim..
I ran 235's on an 8J and even that is pushing it.. The R888's have very little support in the sidewall.. Dunlops are much stiffer..
Tyre technology is EXTREMELY complicated, and the compound of the tread on its own is responsible for about 5% of how the tyre performs..
-
I was gonna get the kumho v70a medium/hard compound with extra load for 18"TD wheels for the summer, will these be ok its all kinda confusing.
