Post by: George10 on September 05, 2013, 11:43:43 am
As I've been on here for a while I think it's about time I done a thread.
This is my much loved mk5 tdi ( money pit) I've owned the car for just over a year and over that period of time I've been saving up bit by bit to do a big transformation.
The cars a 1.9 tdi 160bhp.
All comments are welcome.

This is the car before all the hard work started:

I never took a lot of photos of it standard as I wasn't quite satisfied with the way it looked, but these are a few parts I've bought over the year to get the car to where it is now.

My first modification was to fit my xenon's which were supplied my omeydz. This job was a pain in the arse, but definitely worth it.

ticked all the right boxes so far dude. Looks really good!

Did you have to chop a lot of plastic from the new bumper to make it fit?

Also you said its 160bhp, what was it as standard?

Post by: George10 on September 05, 2013, 02:11:29 pm
Thanks guys! Yeah I had to change my front fogs. I had to cut a fair bit off mate.
The car standard is 103bhp

I don't know what happened with my previous post.. it was just blank but when I went in to edit it, it had a full text body??

Anyway copied and pasted what I wrote

Nice dude.
You'll need a second compressor as the fill time with just one is horrible. So glad I went for 2!  :drinking:

I presume it's been mapped for the 160bhp! I'd check the BHP on some other rollers and do some logging - because at 160bhp it would literally be pushing the turbo past safe limits. The PD105s got a piddly little turbo bless it and the injectors are petty small. At the limit of the stock injectors with the stock turbo you are right on the limit of the MAP sensor with about 1.3-1.4 bar of boost (18-19psi, it trips at 21) and could blow  :ashamed: - This gives a realistic 145, maybe 150 on a push.

Andy - you know you want the GT front end it's the best Mk5 front end IMO.

Also be VERY careful with those rear bags - They have a tendancy to rub on the suspension arm and can go pop

Airlift brought out new double below rear bags - they're the ones I've gone for and they mount ABOVE the cup rather than in it.

Mine

http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?5674525-Help-Air-Lift-Xl-s-Slam-Series

I'd upgrade to those if I were you for safetys sake. This guy wants £100 - http://www.edition38.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=505491  - They look in as new condition.

Thanks dude  :happy2:
I didn't get the the map done, it was already done when I bought it. It is pretty quick tbf, but I thought that was a bit much for a 1.9.

The gt front is the best front in my opinion also.

Yeah I've been told that they rub.. I'm trying to sell both bags so I can buy the new double below performance rear and performance front.

Saw your car at editon on Sunday and I love it! Great job :) is yours also a tdi?

The Slam struts are fine honestly I give mine a fair amount of stick in the corners and it's perfectly fine.
Unless you are making a proper race car, for fast road driving it's good as I explained in PM.

Just buy those double below ones I linked to on Edition, it's really cheap. I'm sure if you offered him 80 quid he'd take it. Nah this one is a GTI, my old car was the diesel.  :popcornsoda:

Ahhh I thought it was still your diesel.

I had to go BACK into my post (as in Edit) not make any changes and click save and the links appeared in the body of the post.

Remember for your daily wheels, no smaller then 17" wheels or they wont fit with biggg brakes!!!

I wouldn't go smaller than 17's
Do you need spacers for these to fit under standard wheels? I know I won't have a problem with them behind my roties
Title: Re: My mk5 tdi.. On going project

As far as Im aware, OEM 17" wheels need no spacers. Aftermarket wheels, just be careful of the ET / offset or spacers might be needed.

They'll be fine behind any OEM wheel.
You have the 55mm hubs I take it? If you have the FSIII calipers you'll need to change your hubs to fit these.

Have you tried Rain-X?
Title: Re: My mk5 tdi (money pit) now with accuair e-level
Post by: xjay1337 on October 21, 2013, 08:04:33 pm
Looks great dude.

What were SiC's work like? I've heard mixed things. I would recommend turning off the ACTIVE thiingy (I forgot what it was called, if you have the paper guide book with the commands it's really easy) - The one where it will automatically adjust the ride height while you're moving. 3 other people I know (plus myself) have had their car dump itself while driving.

About your rear wiper you can put a durable glass sealant on. Rain X is not bad but not very durable, a couple of weeks. If you use G1 or Fly By 30 on a properly prepped window you'll get a good 6 months as a minimum duration, normally double that.

I haven't tried rain x dude..

Cheers jay
Sic done a great job mate.. I'd recommend them!
I'll give that rain x a go and if it works I'll get rid off the wiper.

The active thingy? Haha... When your car lowers on lock etc?

I don't want it failing as it'll much my wheels. Literally have no space and sits perfect

No. The active ride monitor actively adjusts the cars ride height dependent on the road. I believe it's every 5 seconds when stationary and every 45 seconds when moving. EG if you stop on some cambered road it would adjust automatically. It can glitch out when you're driving and dump the car.
Myself and 3 others have suffered from this in the past. I turned mine off after it screwed my wheel arch.

That's my rear left too.

I think the top of the sensor was being bent on a bracket so over time it's damaged it..

Plush have them in stock I believe.
I've bought my replacement through Moore I'm just waiting for him to confirm to me when he'll have it, I think Wednesday he said.
It's bloody annoying, I might buy another at a later date as a spare.

Thanks for your kinds words man. I was going to buy ilevel but I've heard there's been a few faults with it. I'll end up buying it eventually. What wheels you got?

thanx for the grill link.
The checkout doesn't seem to like posting to uk. Did you have to phone them up?
Can you remember what to total cost was?
Did you have to pay customs tax on it?
Was it finished painted, so that it just needs fitting, take it that it had no number plate holes in it?
Title: Re: My mk5 tdi (money pit) now with accuair e-level
Post by: George10 on December 14, 2013, 10:53:18 am
If you go on the American eBay and type in Wolfsburg front grille it should come up with it.
Yes I had to pay tax but only £35
Can't remember the full price but it wasn't cheap
It arrives gloss black ready to fit
No number plate holes as it's a us spec front grille

Just as an FYI I split my front grill (you can remove the front plate part leaving the frame and the grills itself) and had it smoothed and sprayed silver on my old car for £30.  :popcornsoda:
Much cheaper and the same end result.

Shame about the sensor
Unless you hit it then it's an odd place for it to snap make sure it's not at a weird angle. jack the car up on the rear and run it through the range of adjustments (from all down to fully up and check it's not bending or anything

They're £120 now and to buy-price isn't really much cheaper  :sad1: :sad1: :sad1: :sad1:

I'm going to speak to Jamie about fabricating up some steel replacements. You can split the arm from the sensor but you can't buy the arm seperately - Bloody stupid.
That being said I glued mine back together with that stupidly hard bonding agent I forgot the name of. Didn't ride height calibration but no joy!  :driver:

Would be a big step backwards.
You'd be better off fitting some pressure gauges for a manual indication as a backup.
Title: Re: My mk5 tdi (money pit) now with accuair e-level
Post by: George10 on December 18, 2013, 03:57:01 pm
I don't think it's worth fitting the guages. E-level is good but it's not as good as you think.
Title: Re: My mk5 tdi (money pit) now with accuair e-level
Post by: xjay1337 on December 18, 2013, 04:06:04 pm
My friend has V2 and we both prefer my e-level.
If you have a set of gauges it's exactly the same as a pressure based system. Ride height is far more accurate than pressure. no more reverse raking with your mates in the car! Only a suggestion anyway as a backup for a failed height sensor.  :innocent:

Yeah the leveling is good. It tells you on the controller if there's any fault so that'll do.
Plus, guages look sh*t in the car.

Yeah the leveling is good. It tells you on the controller if there's any fault so that'll do.
Plus, guages look sh*t in the car.
Doesn't tell you ride height though that's the issue.
So if your height sensor breaks it just errors out you then have to visually level the car up which is a ballache. i left mine at a fixed height for over a week. good excuse for leak testing though lol.

I got my controller where the cup holders are (so where those paddles are), I never really use the cubby hole. But you could put the gauges in any little space really mate :)
Might put mine in the roof where the sunglasses holder is.

You'd need 2 of these

They are twin guages.

Wire it up so one does the front and one does the rear

Ah what tyres dude? With the corsa i ran Toyo px4, they aren't the cheapest but i think they stretched real nice.

Definitely! Autopilot V2 with performace airlift front struts, probably airlift double bellow rear kit but im not sure what rear shocks to use yet.

Literally just took my wiper off this morning but i've used a rubber grommet. Going to get some electrical tape and tape over the back of it just to make it secure from people pushing it in.

Where'd you get your plug from, it looks so much better than mine!?

I got it from venom motorsport... Yeah where it's glass it blends in with the rest of the window. Cost £21.47 though so pretty expensive

Cheers mate! Definitely expensive but worth it. My grommet cost be like £2 or something from ebay so when i can finally afford the one from venom motorsports i'll swap it over!

it did prevent stone chips to a point but all depends on what the wheels are and the finish on them...Know my mate is going in is silver bora with some nice alloys on so keep a look out for that

I would use something better than Poorboys to be honest. It's not that good. It won't help with stonechips either.

You would need a ceramic/silica sealant to even hope to add any strength. Cquartz will add scratch resistance and even a normal wax such as collinite or fk1000p would last longer than poorboys

look forward to seeing them on mate ;)

Falkens and stretch is known that they have a happened off letting go under pressure, its happened to me and a few others, Personally I wouldnt run Falkens on stretched wheels for that reason.

Try n stay away from them mate

God knows why it happened, I think it was something to to with hitting a hole which just of damaged the tyre them later on went. I've never had a problem with falkens before on stretch. Just glad there was no damage!

The management is fine. Its just started hissing out air so it's either a valve or something's come loose/leaks.

Bit dramatic, one issue and then want to sell the whole car!  :sad1:

Fix it and then go from there.. there can be issues... mine  dumped itself from one corner. management took a crap on me. so i turned off the feature ease
Is it hissing the whole time or only sometimes? could have been the e-level ride monitor doing it's usual crap.

probably leaking from the air line off the strut man just sort it out and then re-consider...

I've just spent a fortune getting my archers to sit perfect on my rotiforms now they're all dented,
Votex is all scuffed up, miltek is dented to f*ck and something's come loose underneath the car.

It only starting hissing when it dumped the whole car but when I turnt the ignition off took
the key out the compressor is still rawing away. I've had to disconnect my battery incase the compressor sets a light. Car goes back to studio in car today so hopefully the find and solve the problem. Hoping it's not the management as my e-level controller wouldn't work either.

two new genuine wings painted will be like £400
Votex well yeah that's a bum and exhaust can be made for like £90 at a local exhaust centre

i had a stuck relay on mine which caused one compressor to keep going, the other was off. i hit it with a spanner gently and it's been good as gold since.

if your e level is not working then that's probably an issue.
like i said man it's a bit of an over reaction as said the overall cost of repair when you factory in what you have spent on the car is very little.  :happy2:

This will be the fourth time I get my wings re done - that's £1,600 and it may sound like an over reaction but it's becoming money after money. I know it's minor due to the amount of money I've spent on the car but it's money that I don't want to be spending.

Just hoping studio in car can sort the problem.

It's just problem after problem.
Maybe when my rotiforms are back from Cali and back on the love will come back

To be fair bud if you go for that arch on wheel lip look unfortunately if you have an issue that's going to be what costs money
as much as i want to do that whole look practically it's not worth the hassle and always just incase you DO have an issue with the air ride you're going to just damage the subframe/exhaust etc rather than the wings and bodywork well  :sad1: :sad1:

As I have said before if you have ride monitor enabled it can does occasionally throw a wobbly and dump one corner or multiple corners of the car.
It happened to me, a guy called Hamidi and also a guy called Olly we all run E-level.

It's not a fault with the management as such it's just the inputs it gets are intepreted in the wrong way.

Do another system calibration or even better turn off the Ride Monitor/active ride aspect of the system which is what I did about 8 months ago and I've had no issues.

The manifold is a fairly quick and easy swap over can you not force the car up somehow? or is it parked all down...

Accuair didn't reply to my e-mail about a broken sensor at all.

It's not hideously expensive all things considered.

I can't get the car up at all, once the air builds up to compression it then dumps everything out of it.

Im not sure if it's just the manifold

Either ECU or the manifold.

A new manifold is about £500, and ECU is around £200. So it would be cheaper to replace the parts on the E-level things?

It may only just be one part (eg the ECU) so I would maybe change the ECU first and see how that works out... or find a friend who has E-Level and try their touchpad and ECU (easy to change)

The only reason why I want to change the whole kit is because if it f*cks up whilst my rotiforms are on it'll ruin them. Bye bye 4 grand. The only way I'm gonna know is to change everything so may as well get v2

The only reason why I want to change the whole kit is because if it f*cks up whilst my rotiforms are on it'll ruin them. Bye bye 4 grand. The only way I'm gonna know is to change everything so may as well get v2

I don't quite see how personally - just as likely that you may have a faulty part within the V2 stuff.
It's a step backwards especially with the cost you have to get! Test the ECU from a friends car and if that makes no difference then it's going to be the manifold, either way it's going to be far less than a whole new management system??

Just seems a bit of a weird decision to me but at end of day it's your car and decision :)

I can get v2 at cost price so it's going to cost me less then buying the accuair stuff.

To be fair to v2 it's highly underestimated. They've never once had a kit that dumps out on them (as you know)
If that dumped out on my rotiforms I would go mad, just can't afford to take the risk. Also, I don't have anyone here with accuair to try their manifold/ecu

Update time :

Accuair has gone and I'm now running full v2 (for now)

Due to the air suspension failing it cause me a lot damages to my car, wings, bumpers etc
I had the whole front end re sprayed, front wings slightly widened to tuck my roitiforms, roof sprayed and bootlid. The car has now had a full respray and is looking spot on.

Few pictures of the progress - Tuk customs done all the work and his standard is another level, highly recommend if anyone needs paint or air  :happy2:

Would look so much better if rear wheels fitted and you could afford tyres that fitted.

Otherwise is okay.

I don't understand why you would want air .. I must not corner well on a track.

When I spoke to Joe Blogs at Bilsten he said you have to run there suspension or your cars pretty much pointless

It handles dreadful, and the right quality is just appalling. I don't know why I didn't just go coilovers, you get the performance and get to ruin the underneath of your car on speed bumps

Yeah I've heard if you don't run them your car is pretty much pointless, may as well scrap it.

No reason at all really mate other than wanting a new project. If I could afford to keep it as well as another car I would but I've spent a lot of money so wouldn't want it just sat there.

I've been looking at audi s3 and ttrs so either one of them will be the next project.

Thanks man

Oh sounds good, I guess if you sell this one it'll give you a bit more money to kickstart the next project.  Either an S3 or a TTRS would make great projects.

TTRS sounds like a real winner. The APR Stage 3+ kit (yes, costs £10K but) gives you around 600BHP, meaning you get Lamborghini power from a TT.

Yeah should get a fair bit of money back for it hopefully. Yeah ttrs would be perfect but hold there money well, s3 would be nice too but wasn't satisfied when I test drove one the other day, don't get me wrong it was fast bit already had test drove the tt and an rs3 so made it feel slow slow
