Hi, I have recently fitted some 19" Audi S Line wheels to my MK5 and am getting some rubbing when going over bumps. They came fitted with 255/35/19 tyres and I am wondering what size I need to go for to reduce the rubbing? Is it a case of just looking at the width or do I need to look at the profile also? I read in another thread not to go lower than 225? Wheels are 19 x 8.5J ET48, thanks.

Guess the rubbing would depend on where it rubbing. On the lining or on the arch itself? On thing to remember with diameter, your speedo etc is set for a certain diameter wheel/ tyre so dont change that. For example, 17" rim with 45 tyre or 18" rim with 40 tyre have the same overall diameter

I'd go for a 225/35/19 personally it's a very minimal stretch
You also need to remember that different tyre manufacturers fit differently so some are wider or narrower than other manufacturers

Thanks for the link, it looks like I'm right on the limit then at the moment. It's hard to say exactly where the rubbing is but the wheels look really wide at the moment, almost like there are spacers on them, but it looks like they're catching the inside of the arches on the rear and the plastic covering by the arches on the front. I've checked with a speedo calculator and it looks like the reading will be out by about 2mph if I put 225's on there.

Really? I don't understand how a 225 width can be different depending on manufacturer? I would have thought they'd be standard across the board?
Jaffa and Andy, did you get any rubbing at all with 225/35/19's on?

I have srs tec wider wings on my car so it doesn't really apply to you and Andy had bbs ck 19x8 so the right size for him was 225/35 anyway

225 refers to the width of the tyre, so will have no bearing on the speedo accuracy. Its the diameter number which you need to look at and on 19" wheels really should be 35 (eg 225/35/19) = tyre width / tyre depth / inside diameter inches).
Rule of thumb, 17" = 45, 18" = 40, 19" = 35...thus keeping the overall diameter for each wheel size the same.

^Thanks, I was referring to the 225's mentioned (with the 35 profile), not just 225's in general. I'm relatively new to the forum so I am wondering if people have put 225/35/19 tyres on my wheels or similar and will it pretty much eliminate the rubbing? I don't want to shell out on new tyres if the problem will still remain. It's a standard MK5 with no modified arches etc.

I ran 225/35/19 on et alloy 8j with no rubbing

+1 for 225/35/19. That's what I have on the front of mine and no rubbing whatsoever.

^I'd not heard of that but will look to do it once I have different tyres as will still have rubbing on rear.
Good to hear both Andy's didn't have any rubbing, my wheel width is only 1/2" more than Andy mod's. I wonder what offset your wheels are though as mine is ET 48, and on the front they look slightly wider than the arches themselves so I worry that different tyres still won't solve the problem :thinking:

Pretty sure Andys are et44 meaning your wheels poke only 3mm more than your wheels
A 225 will stop the rubbing
If the back is rubbing either go to a 225 or camber in the backs slightly

There's a bit of misinformation in this thread.
The profile is a PERCENTAGE of the width. Not a dimension in itself.
So for example, the sidewall of a 255 35 19 will be taller than the sidewall of a 225 35 19.
And width does vary, often by 10mm or more, by manufacturer. Not all 225s are even close to 225.

So I fitted some 225 35 ZR19 DUNLOP SPORT MAXX's and have been running for about a week now with no rubbing. Thanks for the help everyone! :)

Buy the correct size and be aware that you can get the fantastic Pilot Sport 4s for a 19" which isn't available for 18" unfortunately.

I would have loved to but no way can I justify £700 on tyres at the moment when I've got to service the car and DSG gearbox in the next 12 months, also cambelt and water pump as well as all kinds of other small maintenance jobs :scared:
