Title: Rattle from engine
Post by: Dave4597 on July 02, 2019, 12:13:06 am
Hi, I drive a edition 30 gti notice a rattle from the engine area, sound more like from the chain area and it sounds like a loose chain has anyone ever witnessed something like this before, can it be hydraulic tappets? Thanks!
Rattle can be heard in the attachmentshttp://cloud.tapatalk.com/s/5d1a936220872/VID-20190430-WA0000.mp4 (http://cloud.tapatalk.com/s/5d1a936220872/VID-20190430-WA0000.mp4)

The car got a new cam follower just before I bought it from vw, sounds like it's coming from the timing chain area, is it common for the tensioners to go?

yes, quite common for the tensioner to fail or start "failing" and also chain stretch. defo worth having it looked at mate.

Car went to vw, they inspected the issue and got a new hydralic tappet the noise was away for couple of days but it came back need to book it in again pretty sure it sounds like a chain tensioner as the tappet didn't fix it

It sure could be the chain and tensioner then. Do you have a ticking/rattling on idle when the engines at operating temperature and hardly no noise when cold?

Probably is the chain and tensioner mate. Look at getting it replaced.
If you’re good with the tools it is something you can do yourself you can buy it all as a kit.

Gonna book it it again and if they not fix it I'll just do it myself because its annoying driving such a nice car and hearing that noise. Thank you for your help so far!!

After long two weeks finally got the car back. Vw have replaced the camshaft  adjuster, timing chain, tensioner and the cam follower the car sounds so much different now. The only thing you hear is the injectors which is normal in these engines but it's running nice and smooth. Thank you  for the help and I hope this will help someone who will have the same issue.

If you don’t mind posting could you indicate how much VW charged for this?  Assume it was parts and labour. Thanks

I would estimate around a grand for parts and Labour (should be not have had warranty)
