Title: Insurance for my GTI which I have modified
Post by: Bradley Torrance on February 19, 2021, 11:09:14 am
Hello all,

I am in a bit of a predicament and wanted other peoples views and assistance..

i can get quotes for my car with "no modifications" for about £600-£700 a year....

However, i have done a list of things to the car, including: Decat, lowered a small amount, tinted windows, small spoiler extension, front splitter, rear bumper and a race chip....

When i declare just an "exhaust modification" it shoots up to £1500 a year... and i have got quotes from loads of companies...

i will attach photos of my car if that helps...

Thanks if anyone could advise or say what they would do in my position.

Are you going to specialist insurers or standard companies like Direct Line? Various specialists literally just ask for power levels and a list of mods, my RX7 wasn't much more through a specialist than my stock GTI is through a normal company.

I guess you are a younger driver ? It’s not like your car doesn’t look modified so you’d definitely be in trouble if you had to claim for any reason
try all the specialist car insurance company’s and see what price you get and you really only have a couple of options ; pay the insurance to keep your modifications , take some/all the modifications off the car to get the cheaper insurance or pray you don’t have to claim and don’t declare the mods (I wouldn’t do this as it can really mess your future insurance up)

List of a few insurance company’s
Green light
Sky insurance
Adrian flux (up to 15% off if you join the face book group “Mk5 golf owners club uk” )
Chris knott
Prestige keep moving insurance
keith michaels insurance
Brentacre

I've found sky insurance really good. Listed everything and still got a really good price.

Your age is the problem.  Not a lot you can do about that unfortunately, with regard to car insurance!

On my Edition 30 with coilovers, bigger brakes, remap, Eibach ARBs etc etc I only pay £300 through LV.

But I'm 47    The only time in your life where being an old barstewards pays off.  Everything else about being old sucks arse.

Try bentacre mate. I'm a bit older (27) but they've always offered me the lowest for modded cars by a long way.

I am 50 in London with loads of no claims and a standard gti and £700 with LV. That does include commuting but I guess that is London for you?

Definitely age and the car I'm afraid. You'll only get sensible insurance on cars in low insurance groups :) I had the same on my first car.

It is a very good car. I like hot hatchbacks, it is my favorite type of car. I own a Honda Civic from 1998, and it is my favorite body. Also, the engine is very good, the VTEC technology is amazing. It was hard for me t find those cars, after a year of searching I found them in Germany and I bought them at a very good price. I was thinking that that insurance would be very expensive for such an old car, but I was wrong. Luckily I found a site where I could compare the price of the insurance of such a car, and how much will cost the honda civic car insurance (https://www.insuranks.com/car-insurance/how-much-is-car-insurance-cost-for-a-honda-civic)  from different companies.

I pay £700 for an unmodded car and I have 7 years of NCB. I park off street in secure carpark but have commute inc. I have thought about going stage 1 but just can't be bothered to give the insurance company any more cash.
I guess that is another cost of living in London.

I reckon so. I live in Suffolk, which is a very low crime area, in the eyes of insurance companies at least.  I don't know how they arrived at that conclusion given 90% of the drivers here crawl along the roads like retarded slugs, causing all manner of issues and accidents. Stats I guess.  The world is run by bloody spreadsheets instead of reality.
