Title: Depo xenon headlights
Post by: Danknott15 on March 17, 2016, 07:41:58 am
Morning just about to purchase the depo xenon headlights but just wanted a bit of advice. Do I need to purchase a canbus H7 HID kit for the main beam or is non canbus ok? Also do I need any additional adapters or bulb holders etc?

Thanks in advance

No additional adapters needed.

I went for a canbus kit but have feeling that it is not required - I did have to code the xenons so that they both worked though.

Hi, I have a pair of these and the canbus kit is not required so you'll be fine with a standard hid bulb kit.

Are HID's in the main beam a good idea? They aren't a great idea for flashing people as they won't warm up quick enough

Not a good idea. Better off getting genuine ones and running shutter wires which open and close when flashing

There's a set on the forsale section for £450 but I couldn't afford those so went for the cheap ones

Sorry I should have worded it better, I meant like 'are you sure they're a good idea'. While on the subject though, what are you guys running in your main beams? I.e; wattage, colour.

Yeah I've got 4300k 55w low beams, yellow fogs too. Main beam is just a bit boring, might try some better bulbs

What sidelights is everyone running? Didn't know whether to get led bulbs or just the capless 501 bulbs? Also dunno whether to go for white sidelights or run Amber ones so it looks Amber across the whole bottom strip?

a decent set of LED's will smash the standard halogens out the park mate, I've personally gone with white LEDs, although I have Amber DRLs activated I quite like the look of it

Yeah I currently have the indicators set to come on with the sidelights about 20% so was thinking to get Amber sidelights so the whole bottom is Amber. Ordered both white and Amber so will have a play around when they turn up.

Standard 501 amber are the best imo  :happy2:

Just to confirm, if I use the original halogen bulbs and don't bother with an HID kit are these just plug and play or do I still need to make the aforementioned change in VCDS?

I don't understand how. There are plenty of cars that Coke with projector headlights as standard without xenon bulbs.

Surely it will just look like them?

Standard bulbs in them won't light up the road as good as hid bulbs.

@Lyons (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=1029)
Raz is correct as I've tried them myself just to see what happens and they are just awful without a hid kit which I have.

only weak point will be the ballasts if I'm being honest with you.

I appreciate what you're saying and I agree that HID's are brighter than halogen bulbs, but I'm simply wondering with relation to the Depo's do they perform exactly like other projector headlights with halogen bulbs? For example, will they just offer the same light as a B5.5 or B6 Passat, or is there something about the actual Depo headlight unit itslef that make them worse than other projectors with halogens.

Nope nothing different about the depo. you can still use the halogen bulbs and get good light from them.

I got the same ones. Have recommended them to other members as well who have had no issues. Make sure you get someone to code your car to say it has xenons too

You've got them exact ones you sent me the link for? Only ask as I've sent them a message asking them which ones I'll need and they've pretty much said to get any other then them ones as they wont work on a vw? Or are they just trying to make a quick buck and making me get more expensive ones?

You can see they all are named similar lol but this one is definitely it.  I have had this on my car for the last 2 weeks with no issues.
