Title: GTI gear knob and gator
Post by: jamesdorsett11 on July 15, 2021, 01:36:44 pm
Hi all,

I have recently picked up a tornado red Mk5. I'm loving it! The interior is rly clean except for the gear knob and gator.

I'm struggling to find an OEM replacement. I would appreciate if someone could recommend either somewhere to find an OEM replacement or somewhere that would be able to repair my current one (Cambridgeshire area)

Cheers

Manual or DSG? Yes, some of us with the DSG use it to shift rather than select.

There are few places left with them...and they are expensive; https://www.urotuning.com/products/shift-knob-and-boot-gti-gli-mk5-6-speed-1k0711113clusy?gclid=Cj0KCQjwub-HBhCyARIsAPctr7z-F3BkRcoGx900nlUVXleHEaBvVqubGfB20t7rgwLwqH_CtucupmcaAo_REALw_wcB&utm_campaign=Google%20Shopping&utm_medium=cpc&utm_source=google&variant=8391859765303

You may try Amazon UK for something similar; https://www.urotuning.com/products/shift-knob-and-boot-gti-gli-mk5-6-speed-1k0711113clusy?gclid=Cj0KCQjwub-HBhCyARIsAPctr7z-F3BkRcoGx900nlUVXleHEaBvVqubGfB20t7rgwLwqH_CtucupmcaAo_REALw_wcB&utm_campaign=Google%20Shopping&utm_medium=cpc&utm_source=google&variant=8391859765303

If DSG...you can still get those in both std. GTI or Edition 30. But again, expensive; https://www.ecstuning.com/b-genuine-volkswagen-audi-parts/shifter/1k1713203aquzd/

If the links are no help, they at least provide you with the part numbers.

I got a quote from my dealer for a new shift knob (manual) and gaiter for my Edition 30 last year.  £450!!

At that price, they must have a massive box of them gathering dust in a warehouse......which they would rather burn than sell to people at a discount.

LOL...they are expensive. I replaced my DSG shifter with the ED30/MK6 GTI (I believe it was ED35) and it was near $250 USD. https://www.vwpartscenter.net/oem-parts/volkswagen-gear-selector-gti-mk6-dsg-1k1713203aquzd?gclid=Cj0KCQjwub-HBhCyARIsAPctr7w2oAbYI47AXzg5JmXggdaKI5i6kRgOhWG2gJYvHhGHOOdS6xicrvwaAutGEALw_wcB

For my manual GTI I bought a secondhand genuine Mk7 GTI knob from eBay for £50 (many cheap looking fakes out there) and also a gaitor with red stitching from AliExpress for £5 (good quality actually)

Took the mk7 gaitor/surround off and transferred the AliExpress version on

An other option is an Audi A3 8v gear knob and gator, although it requires a bit of work. You need to unstitch the GTI one and use its plastic part and staple the Audi one on to it. Not to difficult and I managed to find a new one on eBay for about £80.

Above Mk7 one looks great. Any cheaper options for dsg? Didn't realise they were so expensive.

Edit : Just seen you can retrofit a Mk6 gear knob to the mk5, so this could be an option. The base and gaiter on mine are good condition it's just the leather on the knob that's wearing! So could I just take this off and screw on a Mk6 knob?

@Jons1001 (https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=97056) Unfortunately the gear knob doesn’t just screw of on the dsg , it’s actually a little tricky to get it off and the knob and gaiter come of as one not separately.

Yeah, not as inexpensive for the DSG as the manuals are. But easy enough to swap.

Do yourself a favor and first watch a few MK5 gear shift replacement vids.
Using an interior trim tool, the gaiter frame is popped up. First along the edge at the arrows and working forward. The gear-select wiring is then disconnected. Then release the knob lock, I believe, by pushing it upward (downward should be to lock it on). Pulling the knob off sometimes is difficult as it can be or feel locked on and requires some forceful maneuvering. This is why you disconnect the gear-select wires first. I went with this OEM DSG shifter;
