Title: 18" fitment issues
Post by: savechip17 on February 18, 2009, 06:42:32 pm
well i just got some devil rivieras 18", fitted them to my golf (tdisport) at the weekend and crashed it last night as the front right wheel came off. all the nuts had just fallen out. and i know i put them in good.

just wondering if i needed something else as ther are 18s and i has normal 17" estorils on b4 hand.

any help would be really appreciated as i checked the other wheels and they were coming loose too.

Probably put the wrong bolts in, if you used the OEM bolts on aftermarket wheels thats your problem..

OEM wheels are all conical seat bolts and aftermarket wheels have a taper seat.. Conical seat bolts in an aftermarket wheel will tighten up and then fall out as soon as you drive it..

Good job no one got hurt!

what he said /\

also the bolts might need to be longer too depending on the alloy

Any wheel place will be able to provide you wheel bolts.. The wheels should have came with the bolts anyways..

Measure how much of the bolt length is protruding from the back of the standard wheel with the standard bolts and then you can measure the depth of the hub mounting part of the aftermarket wheel and figure out the bolt length required..

Generally you will need the following..

M14 x 1.5
17mm Hex
30mm length

yeah it could have been alot worse. the alloys buggered as it was rolling aroung with no bolts in. im taking it to a garage to have a look at the brakes and the bit there attatched to it on the one that fell off. hopefully i wont have nacked the thread.

jc,  just as im not getting things wrong. literally just measure the depth of the hole on the car (hub) and then the width the bolt goes through on the wheel. and voila?

No..

Get your standard wheel and put a bolt in one of the bolt holes and measure how much of the bolt would enter the hub. Thats the measurement that your new bolts on your new wheels needs to sit into your hub also..

So now measure from the face of the wheel (that would sit up against the hub) to the very bottom of the bolt seat.. Add those two figures together and then thats how long your bolts need to be..

Its probably going to be pretty much 30mm as I said.. But good to check.

Nope, you will need taper seat locking wheel nuts too..

crikey mate you've not got the rings either?

some wheels are made for a generic fitment, the rings are added to suit individual fitments to ensure accurate fitment

did that make sense?

is there a chance that i could have damaged the thread not on the bolt but on the car ie the hole the bolt goes into?
I feel like a ttl tit about not knowing the basics  lol

impossible to tell without looking but can still be corrected with a tap and dye device to clean the pattern of the thread, worst case increased in size with a new one, thats just labour costs but most garages will clean the thread for free in a case like this i reckon...if it was needed

Mr Chip can you not put the other wheels back on. If not dont drive your car anywhere. Get it checked out by a qualified person first.

Whats your wheel situation? (oem set, plus the devils?)

Do you have your original wheels you can put back on the car?

Bolts are just over a £1 each.. Quite a good investment if you ask me..
