Very nice

Is the rear one thicker or is it just the shadow causing an optical illusion?

Front bar is 26mm, and the rear is 22mm.

I think the rear is the same as the OEM - except I guess from the weight these ones aren't hollow and the tensile strength will be much better.

H&R also do a set where the fronts are 28mm and the rears 24mm - but I've been told I can't install those on becoz I have xenons.

Still can't see where the difference is between ARBs for cars with xenons or without.

Waiting on a big brake kit - expect it in the next week or two.

Anything else from now on I suspect is going to be an expensive affair...

I was playing with the idea of putting an uprated fuel pump...before entertaining the ridiculous idea of a bigger turbo, intercooler, etc.

Open to suggestions?

Quick update...  got the ARBs, WALK, inner wishbone bushes, Forge coolant pipes, Forge recirculating DV valve fitted.  :jumping:

Maaan, I'm loving it!  :driver:

Will post photos as soon as I'm back from the US.  Going to Seattle (Redmond) - Microsoft HQ this Saturday.  Still got to do the packing.  See you all soon...

Going to get the big brake kit fitted tomorrow. Fingers-crossed as it's the 2nd attempt.  During the 1st attempt found out that steel brake hoses were too short and the carriers were out by 2mm.

Just hope the TTShop have been taking pics as I requested so I can share them with you all...

P.S. Got the occassional knocking noise coming from the front and rear since the ARB and bushes were fitted.  TTShop have assured me that they will look into why this occuring...any ideas/pointers?

chances are your front drop links are banging about or the front arb has not been lined up correct and as i ahd same problem whn mine was done so had new droplinks and new arb clamps fitted alll solved, rear is the same droplinks again i had this happen too

Bad news all round... :sad1:

There's no obvious reason for the knocking...had a good look underneath.  There were no signs of anything appearing to be loose, or rubbing.  The drop links did look suspiciously weak and at an odd angle.  So no closer to resolving the issue.

I think I will replace the drop links to see if this improves things...any recommendations? Presumably, the ARB clamps are to be replaced with OEM ones?

Moving on to the brake kit...to cut a long story short it basically fell apart when reversing out of the workshop.  Believe it or not, one of the piston broke (not the seal) and leaked brake fluid eveywhere.  I'm sending the kit back for a refund...had enough messing around.  I won't be recommending Hi-Spec to anyone.

Some photos of how the kit looked (before it was taken off) along with the TTShop crew inspecting to see where the knocking may be coming from.

Sorry to hear of your brake problems.

Show the TT shop the pic above -  the pic shows what looks a caliper hanging by its hose..................Not good.

Hope you get the brakes sorted soon, have you got a refund?

If I remember correctly I paid £450, they normally cost somewhere around £500.

P.S. I went for the resonated which are around £30 - £50 more than the non-res.

Definitely louder, deeper, and throatier burble than stock. The non-res effectively minimises too much noise intruding into the cabin whilst driving.

Cheers Mojo. Also where did you get the Rear end from?. Would the performance change if i put the R32 exhaust onto a Gti?
Title: Re: MUBster DUBster Evolution II
Post by: xxx_mojo_xxx on October 12, 2009, 10:07:11 pm
Hi Blake-R,

I sourced the exhaust from a local shop which has since closed down. The exhaust comes in two main parts:

Try this link out for further info http://www.millteksport.com/exhaust.products.cfm?variantid=159 (http://www.millteksport.com/exhaust.products.cfm?variantid=159)

For maximum performance you will need to go for the full exhaust system i.e. both the parts mentioned above.  I went for the cat-back option - I've been told this does improve performance as the system allows exhaust fumes to travel more freely.  The pipe size is larger and the contours it follows have less bends.  Problem is that I had my car remapped the same week as the exhaust was fitted, so I have no way of separating how much the exhaust alone improved performance. I suspect it wasn't much.

To be honest I did it for the looks and exhaust note.  The exhaust system is modular, so you could go for the down-pipe bit at a later stage. I'm hoping to do this at some point...the only disadvantage here is that the remap I have will need adjusting to avoid the lambda sensor tripping some warning lights in the car.

The rear bumper, fixtures and fitting were from the local VW dealership - suggest you haggle with parts for a couple of percent off.

Apologies if some of this is a statement of the obvious, but I thought I may as well cover off the queries I asked before investing my cash.

Sorry to hear of your brake problems.

Show the TT shop the pic above -  the pic shows what looks a caliper hanging by its hose..................Not good.

Hope you get the brakes sorted soon, have you got a refund?

indeed, not clever

Why is it not clever?

....The weight of the suspended caliper risks overstressing, stretching, or even breaking the brakeline, even if it's braided.

It looks like sloppy workshop practice and I must say I'm very surprised as TTshop are normally more careful in my experience.

Some good news and some bad news on the MUBster DUBster project.

Had the turbo back exhaust section installed last Friday.  This marries up with the Milltek cat back section installed earlier.  The good news is that it makes such a difference to the way  the boost comes through - especially through the low and mid range revs.

I managed to sneak a brief peek under the car while it was on the ramp and a bit concerned with the clearance underneath near the sport cat bit. With the snow I haven't really been able to boot the car, but I think the exhaust may foul with the heat shield under hard acceleration.

Question 1:  Is there anything I should try to improve clearance between the turbo back section and the heat shield bit?

Also, noticed that the Forge coolant pipes are seeping.  Got pink gunk collecting near the clips and the engine coolant level has dropped to the minimum marker.  This is over a period of four months... I'm considering that I should change the original fastening clips with the Forge equivalents to see if that resolves the issue.

Question 2:  Does anyone have the Forge coolant pipe kit installed and aware of a similar issue, potential things to try and check?

A bit of a bitter sweet moment...but I'm hoping I can get this sorted with the support and suggestions from the forum members.  Thanks in advance.

I cant see why your Milltek would be sitting lower than anyone else's  :chicken: and i havn't seen on here anyone's catching in the snow.  :happy2:

And as for the pipes all you can do is make sure they are the correct length, avoiding pressure on the connections, make sure all the clamps are seated properly and secure.  :happy2:

Thanks for response Top Cat.

I guess all I can do at this stage is to monitor and see how things plan out with the Milltek sport cat.  I guess the thing that worried me more was when the TTShop also raised the concern of how close the sport cat was sitting - near the heat shield and dog bone engine mount.

Spoke to Forge about the coolant pipes leaking.  It's something they have come across before, where a previous 'bad' batch were diagnosed to be seeping across the length of the pipe rather than leaking from the ends where they are fastened.

Their customer service is fantastic as they have offered to dispatch a complete new set along with fastening clips.  I'm hoping to get the replacements fitted this Friday - so fingers crossed.

Got a complete new set of Forge coolant pipes fitted...wasn't pleased with having to cover fitting costs again.

Anyway, will monitor how these are over the next couple of months and see if it's all sorted.

P.S.  I'm thinking of getting a THS intercooler and Autotech HPFP.  Any words of advice you folks want to share?

Turns out two of the coolant pipes hadn't been fixed correctly - may be it was the cold weather.

Anyway, got a spare set which will be going on sale to recover some the additional fitting costs.

I can whole heartedly recommend the THS Intercooler on a K04 car. Had one fitted for past 8k and it has performed flawlessly.
I guess on that basis it's going to be great on a smaller K03?

Anyone, photos of the fitting process?

TTS Roadsport pretty much do all my fitting and mods.  In their defence they also raised the issue that the exhaust didn't look right.  They are also following this up with Milltek on my behalf.

I think I'm jinxed... my modding journey has been a rocky ride.  Brakes failing, shocks not fastened properly, coolant pipes leaking, and the list goes on.

I guess its a good job that I'm pretty patient.

I wouldn't say your jinxed mate, imo it looks like you got some cowboys working on your car - the exhaust may well be the wrong part

but that pic of the brakes hanging by the hose, the shocks not fastened and coolant hoses not installed properly is shocking

and the fact they charged you to install your new hoses properly

i would be

Quick update...

THS intercooler and Autotech HPFP fitted this Friday (29/01/10)... mid range torque has improved drastically.  Even without the stage 2 remap the car has totally transformed.  I plan to drive the car for the next fortnight (until the next service).  Idea is to let the engine settle into it's new transplanted "organs" before going for the remap.

Also, had the BBK fitted and very happy with it.  Thing that surprised me the most was the weight.  The kit weighs less than the stock brakes, even though the brakes are much larger!!! Nothing like reducing some weight, hey!  :jumping:

Brake kit spec.:

Disc size = 360mm diameter, 32mm thick, grooved
6 pot calipers
24" braided brake hoses
Motul SBF600 brake fluid
Feroda DS2500 pads
Aluminium bells with 12 bolt fixing
No spacers or shims required (straight fit)

I've had the brakes for two weeks now - driven at various speeds to test and bed them in...thoroughly enjoying the improved braking dynamics.  I feel a lot safer with the car braking as it should be.   :happy2: Weather has been really bad so haven't had a chance to clean the car...in any case here are some snaps.

Photos from the day I had the THS intercooler and HPFP fitted.  All completed on 29 Jan 2010.

Since then done a couple of hundred miles...and the car torque is waaaaaaaay better.  Going to get the 30K service done this weekend, before considering the stage 2 remap.

P.S. Photos show both the stock intercooler with the THS one in front for comparison.  Unfortunately, no photos of the HPFP fitting, rev. C cam follower, or BSH drop links...but you should get an idea of what's involved.

Okay so mojo came up to round mine and I sat it the passenger seat. The power of the car was amazing. Could feel the midrange torque as it pushed me into my seat. The brakes were equally as effective at rejiggling my internal organs. Suitably impressed. The milltek resonated exhaust was bang on what I've expected it to sound like - a touch louder than normal at idle and slow driving, and like a monster when the foot was down. I'm still in love with the graphite blue colour. Looks almost as gorgeous as the black on the ED30.
