Title: A DSG question
Post by: Top Cat on March 11, 2010, 05:10:45 pm
Have my car back from the dealers after getting a new mechatronics unit fitted.  :pomppomp:

And when i started the car at the dealers took my foot off the brake and the car didn't move.  :chicken: before i it was fixed, as soon as i released the brake it would pull forward, So much so that i have never had to use the accelerator in reverse.
So this got me thinking whether my mechs unit was defective straight from the factory, as it has always done this pull forward from new.

So what does yours do when you just take your foot off the brake.

Mine pulls forwards, in either gear unless its on a incline in which case it may stay still or roll backwards until I apply sufficient revs.

My previous DSG car a Leon TDI also creeped in both forwards and reverse gears, as does my dads new A5 sportback 7spd DSG.

Mine gently creeps, rather than pulls hard, in either D or Reverse.

all auto's 'should' pull as far as i know, and shouldnt rollbackwards if on a hill, it should hold still.

Id say that they have now broken your box! not mended it!   or maybe not set something correctly!  :rolleye:

Yeah sorry probably bad use of the word pulls, its only a creep hence it easily gets beaten by an incline!

i really dont think it should roll back, none of the auto's ive driven have rolled back whilst in D

Agreed, I don't think it should roll back unless the incline is pretty extreme. The GTI has a feature called Hill Assist which stops it rolling back in normal circumstances. It's described in the Handbook.

i thought hill assist was just applying the rear breaks on a hill?? in which case the manual's would also have it, mine doesnt have it. (unless its an option) my old subaru imprezza did though.

Im not convinced about the hill assist, its supposed to give 2 seconds of hold to allow you to switch pedals, and I cant say ive noticed it, and I am talking about some reasonable gradients about 30-35 degree gradient but nothing that has a warning sign.  Ive used the hill hold in the newer cars and that definitely works.

Hill hold is only a factory option for the passat or later dsg cars.

Its not on the mk5 GTi at all. My Passat B7 had its own button in conjuntion with the Electrically operated hand brake which has Hill hold.

All 3 of my Mk5 DSG cars have crept foward  and all of them on a very steep hill, all rolled back unless you apply the Handbrake.

Sound's like the full adaption has finished on the new ecu  :happy2:

Mine creeps slowly...the rate of the crawl varies depending on the driving behaviour beforehand.

So, for instance if I'm on the motorway and I have to stop and then let the car crawl...it does it at a different pace to say first thing in the morning.

One thing that bugs me with DSG is i think it stays in 2nd gear unnescessarily sometimes... and when going slowly it bugs me that the clutch is rubbing away when im thinking... why don't you change into fooking 1st gear then :signLOL:

I think exactly the same, and then when your in manual it knocks down to 1st to soon  :rolleye:

You don't have to replace clutches in a DSG gearbox though?

Mine is a bit of a creeper too

I've noticed that it pulls a little more now than it did do as stock, so maybe as you modify the creep gets stronger too

I have found like previous autos ie. an old mk3 escort Ford CVT box that the car will creep either in reverse or drive dependant on revs ie if she's on choke the RPM will be higher. I have found that the DSG is jerky at low maneovering speeds but my dads 2009 TTS with the same box reacts the same. With regards to it rolling back, I thought they had one way clutches to stop it rolling but I presume that as the DSG box has two clutches, this may not be possible? My Edition 30 rolls backwards on an incline.

Anybody dabbled with GIAC's DSG software upgrade yet? I was told that this software makes it smoother as there is a torque limiter in first and reverse as standard and the car has to 'fight' it to move forwards or backwards accordingly. I've heard that this software removes the limiter and aids the already quick shift times. Any feedback on this subject would be welcome, thanks.

Maybe this is the answer  :happy2: they have reset my ECU i am running in stock at the moment.

....A DSG remap will improve shifts/thresholds in Manual mode. It's not a cheap option though.

but you also lose its best feature if you map the box, which is the DSG burp.

The map would have to do some amazing things for me to lose that wonderful sound.  :happy2:

I recently had my DSG gearbox computer(mechatronics?) replaced and I think it creeps more than it did before. I am also sure the gear changes are not as fast as before but this might just be in my head. My car does roll back while in D on a hill but there does seem to be slight delay enough so you can easily go from brake to accelerator without rolling back.

My car is completely stock and I also get creep when I let off of the brake - I dont think Ive ever used the accelerator in reverse at all.

I would get your car looked at again. All auto's creep when you let off of the brake - and its not normal if its doesnt creep!

If i caught a women scraping my fake chrome insert like that, i would sit on her head.  :signLOL:

I am sure it was holding it, but i certainly didn't notice anything like what i had before. Saying that my map was off so the whole car felt weird, perhaps it was just the difference from before as mine really pulled hard previously.  :happy2:

I have driven several different automatics and they all creeped. I thought thats why the footbrake had to be pressed when selecting drive or reverse, so the car didn't move before you wanted it to.

Been out this morning. Put my map back on and the creep forward is back to about 60% of before the mech unit change.

I think MR Hurditch was correct.  :pomppomp:

pleased you got your dsg box fixed - you must have a nicer vw garage than me

though mine has actually weirdly seemed to have fixed itself of late - jurkiness is hardly noticeable - but in contact with a more mod friendly vw garage courtesy of Dom and VWR and have it booked in for April to be inspected.

i have not noticed loosing the dsg burp after remapping the box - its still very much there

The 2 cars i have been in 3 if you count Hurdy's have all but lost the burp.  :sad1: Saying that with the blueflame, for some reason it is very pronounced.  :pomppomp:

be interesting if you now check if it creeps by putting it back to stock....

I cant see how a different engine map would alter the creep......... (assuming the idle speed is the same)

^^^ I think the cat might be on to something, mine is running in stock mode and feels like it pulls less while holding it on the brakes and starts to creep slightly slower

Mine burps now I've had the cat removed. I also get more parping on the overrun :rolleye:

....Off topic for a sec, but one of the latest (2010) rules about Touristenfahrten days is that you must have cats fitted. It's all discussed over on the 'loopy' forum.
