Title: Subframe bolts
Post by: RobboGTI on March 21, 2012, 08:42:31 pm
Hi guys have done a search but become unsuccessful in finding where the subframe bolts are located? Can they be seen and changed easily by myself?

Thanks in advance :-)

It's the inner bolts on each side that are replaced  :happy2:

Ahhh thank you couldn't be any clearer!
Another quick question. Am I safe to change these by myself one by one without the car falling apart on me?

Thanks

Thank you very much guys I'll have to check these bolts out and replace them for new with the spacers.

Looks like an easy enough job, just gotta prop her up on axle stands!

You'll find plenty of useful info & and help around here Robbo.  Look forward to hearing how you get on.Quite a few people have the quiet knocking remedied by the new bolts

Read different topics about the subframe bolt, but couldn't find if this solves my problem:

I have a 2005 mk5 gti. I often hear a knocking noise from the front. Typically occurs only one time after each direction change (left or right). Mostly you hear this one time 'knock' on roudabouts.
always just one 'knock' at a time/per bend.
Sometimes, but not always (also depend on weather/cold/hot) I hear some 'creaks' when going over speedbumps.
Are the subframe bolts my problem?
What subframe bolts to replace (2 or 4 bolts?) and do I need the spacers?

Thanks,

Tim

RobboGTI, have a peep at this clip if you are unsure, its a straighforward job but this should help you not make the mistake of thinking you can do one side at a time independently :drinking:

And what about the TORQUE SPECS?
On the ECS movie I see: 70NM / 52 ft-lbs +1/4 turn
On some forums I see: 110NM / 81 ft lbs + 1/4 turn

The haynes manual says 70nm for the sub frame bolts plus a quarter turn.

Thanks!!!
All other bolts around them are also 70NM (so I can check them)?
And can I use a 4 post auto lift for this?
Do I need to re-align the car?

The manual says all the sub frame bolts are 70nm plus 1/4 turn.  If you are just renewing the bolts you can take them out and replace them one at a time. That way you wont have to have a realignment done.

Sorry to bring up a dead topic but rather then start a new one I thought id continue this one, then if anyone searches, theres more info in one thread :)

I'm looking at getting these, https://www.ecstuning.com/News/MKV_Subframe_Spacer/ES2102460/ (https://www.ecstuning.com/News/MKV_Subframe_Spacer/ES2102460/) as ive heard they can get rid of creaking. When im at a very slow speed/stopped and turn the wheels, reversing in a spot for example I get a creak when turning the wheel.

My questions are can I just undo one bolt, replace it and then replace the other the same way? and also does the bolt screw into a body of some sorts a.k.a theres no nut on the other side? Thanks

You can watch an online video from ECS, I think, explaining how to fit the subframe spacers and new bolts.
