Title: How To: Mk5 Heated Seats Retrofit
Post by: jason_rmh on February 28, 2013, 10:03:51 pm
Heated Seats RetroFit (Using Kufatec Wiring Loom)

The instructions provided by kufatec are translated from German and are not too good, so hopefully this guide will help.
It is based on my own findings, together with information obtained on the forum and help from forum members, I could not have installed my heated seats without their help, it's about time I give something back!
I have checked to make sure the details are correct, but if anything is wrong, or there is a better way of doing things, shout up and I will update the guide!

Ordering the correct loom

When ordering a loom from Kufatec there are several options to choose from:
Year:

Options:

NOTE:The year is based on the year of the seats you are wiring up not the year of your car. This is normally labelled on the underside of the seats. However, an easy way to tell, is to look under both seats for a control module.
If you have a control module under both seats, you need the 'upto 2006' loom.

If you have a control module under only the passenger seat, you need the '2007 onwards' loom.
The wiring is different, so ensure you get the correct loom, and check before ordering.

If your seats have electric lumbar support (there will be a round 4 way switch on the side of the drivers seat), choose the 'with seat adjustment' option also.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FGuides%2FMk5_Golf_Heated_Seats_Retrofit%2Fhs01a_zps198e62a4.jpg&hash=b6b99bc6766c8aa0999332a72c13acd80a478e8a)

Only one loom is required to wire up a pair of front heated seats.

Duration
This took me a full day, around 12 hours!, taking my time to ensure I didnt mess anything up, and it worked first time!

Tools you will need:

(If extending the wiring loom):

BEFORE STARTING, TAKE A VCDS SCAN OF YOUR CAR IF POSSIBLE, IT WILL BE USEFULL AS A REFERENCE LATER IF TROUBLESHOOTING IS REQUIRED

Preparation
Looms supplied by kufatec are made for left hand drive vehicles, where the fuse box, heated seat control module and CECM would be on the left hand side of the car.

Upto 2006
The drivers / passengers plugs may be on the wrong side. Think this can be overcome by swapping the wires at the heater control panel, rather than having to swap the wires on the seats.

2007 onwards
To enable the loom to fit a right hand drive car there are two options:
Extend the passenger seat connector (requires soldering and extenstion of wiring)
You will see the loom to the drivers seat has more wires than the plug on the seat itself. This plug needs extending to go to the passenger seat where the control module is.
You can shorten the drivers side plug and use the wiring removed to extend the other side.
You will be left with 3 extra wires to extend, for which you will need to obtain some wire to extend them.

Swap the seat looms over (you will lose the use of the seat occupancy sensor unless you swap that also)
Eddie-NL does it this way. By doing this you will lose the seat occupancy sensor, unless you swap that too which involves stripping the seat down further, although the occupancy warning can be coded out in VCDS so you dont need to worry about it.

You need to take one of the above options before installing the heated seat loom.

Stripping Interior
There are three areas the wiring needs to goto:

Ensure the ignition is off and key removed. You may wish to disconnect the battery, although I didnt do this.

Drivers / Passenger Seats

Firstly, remove the two front seats, Theyre each held in by 4 spline head bolts:
Adjust the front seats fully to the rear.
Remove the plastic covers to reveal the loom connectors seated in a plastic holder.

Undo the 2 front bolts using an M10 Spline bit.
Adjust the seat fully to the front and undo the 2 rear bolts.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FGuides%2FMk5_Golf_Heated_Seats_Retrofit%2Fhs04_zps3f5e90b5.jpg&hash=c649249eb9bd01bf135b74d940878183fbaa3bcc)

Do this for each seat, and remove both from the car.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FGuides%2FMk5_Golf_Heated_Seats_Retrofit%2Fhs04a_zps54ac0961.jpg&hash=cfdaa830964b1cb58d0d87b901f205cb8ae3254b)

Place both seats out of the way, I placed mine on some cardboard to prevent marking them.
Be carefull not to scratch your car with the seat rails while removing the seats, especially the steering wheel as it kinda gets in the way!

Fuse Box / CECM
The following involve working in and around the drivers footwell.
Using trim removal tools, prise off the fuse box cover on the end of the drivers side dash board.

Withdraw plastic cover panel.
You should now be able to prise off the lower dash panel that holds the head light switch.
Starting from near the fuse box, prise the panel out and withdraw from the car, working towards the steering wheel.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FGuides%2FMk5_Golf_Heated_Seats_Retrofit%2Fhs18_zps8f044835.jpg&hash=522672ad17cd8d2a14fcdb7113541ae147b03906)

At the top and bottom of the fuse box there are 2 torx screws.
Remove these to loosen the fuse box, to give you better access to the rear of the fuse box.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FGuides%2FMk5_Golf_Heated_Seats_Retrofit%2Fhs21_zps8da85059.jpg&hash=6ca47beb40fa8eb53f99b7dc60f01d0ef549a560)

Around the side of the fuse box are little tabs that need to be lifted in order to prise the plastic cover off the rear of the fuse box, exposing the wiring and fuse circuits.

Next, lift up the drivers sill cover working for the end nearest the fue box, it will unclip, revealing the carpet underneath.
Now to remove the trim around the bonnet release lever.
First, unscrew the plastic retaining screw using a flat bladed screw driver to un screw it.
Then remove the bonnet release lever. Do this by pulling the lever as if to open the bonnet.
On the top side of the leave you will see a plastic tab that is a C shapped retaining clip. Prise that out, the bonnet lever can then be removed.
Undo the plastic screw from behind the lever.

Wiring diagrams borrowed from this helpful blog:

NOTE: Do not connect any wires at this stage, just run them to the approximate location, checking the length of the loom allows the cables to reach their locations.

Drivers Seat
Starting on the drivers side near the base of the A pillar, lift of the carpet.
Feed the loom under the carpet with the plug going to to the drivers seat area.
You're aiming to get the female plug from the kufatec loom into position in the plastic holder.
HS28

Fuse Box / CECM
Next route the wires towards the fuse box and CECM.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FGuides%2FMk5_Golf_Heated_Seats_Retrofit%2Fhs40_zps7e2e2f5a.jpg&hash=cca25838201622f453b9a2ea53b83415684a80c7)

Run the wires along the base of the sill. You will see the route the factory loom takes upto the fuse box, try and follow this route.
There should be 2 or 3 wires to the fuse box.
One remaining wire should be routed upto the CECM just above the fuse box.

Heater control panel on dash
Another batch of 3 wires now needs to be run upto the climate control panel.
To make this easier, I kep the wires together by taping them with insulation tape.
Feed the wires under the carper, across the drivers side, to the base of the centre console.
Then run right, along the centre console towards the front of the car, until you hit the base of the main dashboard.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FGuides%2FMk5_Golf_Heated_Seats_Retrofit%2Fhs29_zps73e12b5a.jpg&hash=9ef069351bfb6dc1619e5c73527730b711dbc785)

You should now be able to reach down the gap where the climate control panel goes, and reach up with your other hand through the gap at the bottom. Pull the wires up, through the gap, and run along the existing loom.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FGuides%2FMk5_Golf_Heated_Seats_Retrofit%2Fhs30_zpsa5c8fb6e.jpg&hash=8765c931dffc611107fc8eb40e3feda02ef669f4)

Passenger Seat
Finally, the connector plug to the passenger seat.
Run the connector along a similar route to the centre console, at the base of the dashboard.
There is a gap under the centre console that you should be able to get your hand in and lift the carpet.
Feed the plug through as far as you can.
Go round to the passenger side and lift the car and pull the plug through.
You can then route the cable over to the passenger seat area. You're aiming to get the female plug from the kufatec loom into position in the plastic holder on the passenger side.

That should be all wires in their approximate locations.
I recommend going for a brew at this point... next up you'll be connecting wires to add the heated seats circuit to the car.

Connecting Loom
Drivers / Passenger Seats
Simply plug the connector each seat into the connector that will now be seated in the plastic housing, underneath each seat.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FGuides%2FMk5_Golf_Heated_Seats_Retrofit%2Fhs31_zpsd1fddc11.jpg&hash=79b74c47802be45e00e42f45bd1689ab56dc4227)
Once connected, you can refit the plastic cover.(You may want to leave this off for now in case you need to test your circuits)

Fuse Box / CECM
Using a flat bladed screw driver, prise back the lug allowing you to slide down the pink section of the fuse box. It only moves approx 5mm. Once this is done you will be able to insert terminal into the required locations on the fuse box.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FGuides%2FMk5_Golf_Heated_Seats_Retrofit%2Fhs32_zps52764638.jpg&hash=69f400e67a425e9871d55c1078582c8dcc0d2568)

Before inserting the terminals, check with a multimeter that they are live.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FGuides%2FMk5_Golf_Heated_Seats_Retrofit%2Fhs42_zpsd9cc224b.jpg&hash=207e63d101d7261c86262a6e0369dc676263e181)

Once all terminals are in place, slide the pink section back up to lock terminals in place and re fit the fuse box using the screws.
Replace the plastic cover on rear of fuse box. (You may want to leave this off for now in case you need to test your circuits)

Heater control panel on dash
In order to add the new wires, the 20 pin connector block that plugs into the rear of the heater control panel needs to be separated.
Push down on the small tab and prise out the inner connector block.

Final step is to activate heated seats in VCDS.
Goto to module 9 - Central Electrics.
Tick Byte 2, Bit 7 (Seat Heating Installed) and apply coding.

Check / clear any fault codes.

Test Operation of Heated Seats
Points to note:
Heated seats will only operate if you are sat in the seat (I think... can someone confirm?).
The seats should heat up on the base and at the lower part of the back rest.

 :congrats:

You can also confirm the seats are working using the measuring blocks in VCDS.
Goto module 09 - Cen. Elect.
Measuring Blocks
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FGuides%2FMk5_Golf_Heated_Seats_Retrofit%2Fhs44_zpsc5f7c8b2.jpg&hash=f329bed5a2cd87aed84d7888f822149c01f74960)

Block 10 should show 'Active' when the heated seats are turned on at the climate control panel.

If you have lumbar adjustment this should also function, using the 4 way switch on the side of the drivers seat.

Once all confirmed working, put everything back together!
Thanks for reading and good luck!

Reckon this can be done on other VAG models in the same chassis, such as A3, MK6 and Scirocco?

It can be done but you will need to check the fuse terminals as they will prob be different.  Its not too difficult to work out though with a multi meter.

i have been following this guide

the only thing i arent sure about is the connection onto the CECM, i dont suppose you have more detail/pictures about how and where it is fitted

and also, forgive me if im wrong but with the wiring going to the fuse box, there is only one wire into each fuse slot, how does this work as i presumed it would need 2

thanks

I think though, some of the circuits are already live hence why you only need to add one wire to connect it up.

...

...
OK...
The wiring diagrams above show three wires running to the CECM:
L2 - connector L, pin2
I2 - connector I, pin 2
C1 - connector C, pin1

The CECM is located underneath the dash just above the bonnet release lever, behind the fuse box.

This picture shows the CECM when totally removed from the car, note each connector is labelled:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg78.imageshack.us%2Fimg78%2F1663%2Fcecm2te4.jpg&hash=e9f0d25fdc98bb636da30b440e3e00c6f1981f96)

Two red levers need to be pulled towards the bonnet release lever to unlock the wiring harnesses for removal.
You can then pull the relevant connector out from the CECM, so you can insert the relevant wire into the correct location on the harness plug.

Once the wires are in place, refit the connector into the CECM and push the red levers back into position to lock in the wiring harnesses.

Hopefully, that should clear things up for you  :happy2:

Hi, Jason.

Only to confirm...I live in Brazil and I own a VW Jetta 2007 (made in Mexico).

There is both heat seat switch on the panel (climatronic), but both seats doesn't heating (I tested this with the engine runing).

I checked my fusebox and all fuses are okay, except the "SC46", which position does not have the connector to plug the fuse into.

Should I purchase this wire harness and to the same job that you did here? Your car came with the heated seat switches on the panel, but it doesn't worked before you do this, same as I'm trying to tell you?

Also, the URL that you put for purchase the wire harness is not working anymore and there is more than 2 options of VW-Golf 5 wire harness at Kufatec website.

Please let me know.

Thanks and have a great day.

Hi.
My car did not come with heated seats and no switches on the panel, I had to fit the new panel too.

Read my guide on which options you require for the wiring harness from kufatec. It depends on the year the seats were made, whether they have one control module under your drivers seat or a module under both seats. Also, whether you have electric adjustment and lumbar support.

Hello everyone i have just joined the forum

Sorry for resurrecting this thread but I just got a mk5 GTI a few weeks ago, and I have managed to get some heated leather trim to instal and I am going to use this guide.

My question is if anybody can help, the seats I got are from a 2006 GTI and both the passenger and drivers seat do say March 2006 on the label on the bottom. My confusion is that there is only one control module under the passenger side and this guide that jason_rmh wrote says -

So you can see my confusion for when I am ordering the harness, I believe from this information it must be the 2007 onwards harness that I need to order even with the 2006 dates on the seats?

Any help is much appreciated, thanks

You need the later wiring, so order the 2007 on harness :)
Title: Re: How To: Mk5 Heated Seats Retrofit
Post by: JP on November 22, 2014, 06:53:07 pm
Thanks for that, I was hoping you would see the post.

Kufatec told me it was the earlier one as the seats are 2006 and I was not convinced at all.

I just had a quick look at the plugs on the seats and looked at the 2007+ wiring diagram and as long as you remember that the passenger / drivers seat is the other way round as that diagram is for a left hand drive, the cabling for the harness seems to marry up with what is on the seats.

Thanks again.

If I had not of read your guide, I wouldn't have known anything about the cars having different amounts of seat controller modules.

I would then have ordered the incorrect harness.

Yes, I can't wait.
I have already fitted all the door cards and installed the back seats.
I have a the seat heater switch already, it's just the harness to order now.

Obviously I haven't seen the harnesses but I'm guessing that you just have to lengthen the cable on the drivers plug so that it goes to the passenger side where the module is? Then the passenger plug would have extra length on but goes to underneath the drivers seat. So if I did not shorten that side it would not matter you just have to hide the cable in the car.
You could do all this work when the harness is out of the car before you start obviously.

Also by the way, on your guide you have put the link to the wiring diagrams but you have the 2006 wiring diagram showing twice.

Under the installing the loom section, its on the up to 2006 and also the 2007 onwards and also this is replicated on the PDF.

Worth updating.

Correct, lengthen the short side of the loom to reach the passenger seat. I did this by shortening the drivers side and using that wire to lengthen the passenger side. You could leave it and hide it under the carpet though I guess.
I did this after I had removed seats, before fitting loom so I could measure the length I needed.

Jas,

I tried to msg you the day after I sent the last msg but your inbox is full.

I decided to swap over the seat wiring instead of cutting the harness. I plugged it all in, swapped the connections on the back of the heater as I thought it would work that way (best guess).

It worked straight away no problem, I haven't coded anything. The correct seat comes on for the right side.
My seatbelt warning etc does not go off.

So all is good.

Thanks for your help, it was quite easy to do just a little daunting.

I am sorry for resurrecting this thread.

I have recently purchased 2005 GT 4-Motion and would like to retro fit a leather interior, which I understand automatically comes with heated seats and electric lumber control.   As a newbie to Mk5 ownership and to the forum I would really appreciate some help please.

I have read this thread carefully, however the difference for me is I already have heated seats and Climatronic (digital climate control)   but not electric lumber control. There are two little wheels on the dash that have 5 positions to control the temp erature of each seat.

I understand there was a change in the wiring up to 2006 / from 2007 onwards, and the best way to check what year the seats are is to see if the there is a control module under both or just the passenger seats, and that if there are control module under both seats they are from an up to 2006 vehicle.

My question is  - if I make sure I get seats from a 2006 car will they plug straight in?  Also will the electric lumber control power-up or will they need their own power supply?  If I get seats from a 2007 onwards car will they work and if not what modifications would need to be made to get the heated seats working and lumber control?

I would greatly appreciate any advice you have to offer.  Thank you!

Iv got a 2006 Kufatec loom and unused if you need one :)

Although electric lumbar wires can be added to your current loom and not have to get whole new loom.

I think you will need to add the wires to your existing loom or unpick the old loom and replace with a kufatec one. Either way, I think you'll need some wiring diagrams to figure out which wires / pins to add / remove. You may be able to figure it out from the info in my guide.

Thanks Jas,

I was hoping that, because I already have heated seats with the temperature controls as part of the Climatronic, I could avoid going down the Kufatec wiring loom route if I purchased a 2006 leather interior for my 2005 car.  In otherwords I would just need to concentrate on getting a power and earth to the electric lumber adjustment.  However it looks little more complicated than that... :sad1:

I will certainly use your guide if I decide to go ahead.  Thank you for a posting a great guide.

I think it will just be running a wire(s) to the fuse box and to the correct pin on the seat plug, just figuring out which.
I'll have a look and see if I can rejog my memory.

Its really easy if the wiring loom is labeled. The one i bought from kufatec were all grey! But you can tell which one is for the ground, live and cecm.  The rest just go to the heater panel

The instructions you can access on their website once you've paid.
They have a small stamp on each, such as BLRT (blue red) which then marries up with instructions.

It could and should be better marked up though.

Reviving this old thread, for the sake of knowledge :)
Hope the OP and everyone else is okay with that.

Ok, so i have a GOLF MK5 - BY 2007 November and i'd like to upgrade to seated heats. Besides the wiring loom from Kufatec - do i also need the wires in the attached photo labeled as "driver seat wireharness and passenger seat wireharness " or are these already on my car?

Hi. Those wiring harnesses should already be on your car.
Under you seat you should have a large black connector for heated seats, a small black connector for seat occupancy and a yellow connector for airbag.

See the pictures in the guide which should make it more clear.

Once you have your kufatec loom, you will connect it to the large connector on your seat.

Hope this helps.
Thanks

Hi, more questions!

I have a 2008 GT TDI that I'm fitting 2004 GTI leather seats. I have the earlier Kufatek loom. I've read your guide literally over and over again to try and get it straight in my head. The parts that confuse me are fitting the wires to the heater control panel, CECM & fuse panel.

The Kufatek instructions are basic at best, so your guide is like the bible to me!

I have the basic heater control panel, how would I be able to know what plug to insert the wires to on the back?

In a comment about the CECM, you mention what pins to use but the image is blank?

Cheers, Bob

Post by: jason_rmh on November 21, 2016, 05:20:51 am
If you have the basic heater panel, known as climatic, so look out for that on the wiring diagrams.

For CECM, in my guide, the wiring diagrams refer to connectors by a letter and number. This is the connector (letter) and pin (number).
If you look on the CECM itself, each connector is colour coded and labeled with a letter. Each connector has the pins numbered.

If this doesn't help, I'll give more details later when I can check properly.

Hi sorry to bring this thread up again, I have been "ghosting" on this forum for some quite time. But I've finally had the courage to register lol.

I have been very curious of the heated seats retrofit project, I've fitted in some heated leather seats which were made in 2006,  also purchased the correct heater control with heated seats function. However I'm just confused with the wiring.

I briefly understand where the wires need to be routed but I don't get the big black connector hanging fromunder my seats atm. I'm assuming they're the wiring for the heated elements right? And more importantly where do they connect to as there are no ports available under the plastic tray?

P.S a very well written guide I appreciate the effort made behind it, can't wait to get on with it  myself!
Title: Re: How To: Mk5 Heated Seats Retrofit
Post by: Greigzy on November 25, 2016, 03:35:11 pm
The black plastic connector has to go into plastic tray.

You need to order the loom from Kufatec, to go from the connector in the plastic tray, to the fuse box and the back of the heater control panel.

You buy the looms as per the year of the seats and whether it has electric bolsters or not.

Hope this helps

Well, gave this a go today, followed this guide...

I've come unstuck with the kufatec loom... All the wires are grey!

Need some help..

So got the two earth wires.. The circular spades..
Then there is two wires into one.. I reckon this is the wire that goes to the cecm position C1

Now it gets a bit tricky... There's a group of three wires, which I think goes to the climate control, on is coded Bl/Rt, so black red, the other is Bl/ge, blue/yellow(?) and it the same thickness as the blue/red, so I think these are the left and right switch wires? The third is slightly thicker, but not colour markings.

Then there 4 thick wires all marked KL-30 (I think?) so perhaps some of these go to the fuse panel?

Then there are two more wires together, not colour marked,
And finally one more wire, not colour marked, but it's longer, so perhaps long enough to get to the climate panel..

Why kufatec can't mark up the loom is beyond me!!!  This would be a simple install for a guy with basic electrical skills, but has left me with putting the loom in place but not plugging it in...  Took more about an hour to get the car apart and 20 mins to put it back together, but about 2 hours of head scratching trying to figure out what wire goes where!!!

Any help would be great!!!

Well, gave this a go today, followed this guide...

I've come unstuck with the kufatec loom... All the wires are grey!

Need some help..

So got the two earth wires.. The circular spades..
Then there is two wires into one.. I reckon this is the wire that goes to the cecm position C1

The wire that has 2 going into it isn't for cecm.

As far as i remember on the 2007+ loom it's:

2 for ground
3 for the heater panel
2 for fuse box (1 ignition 1 live) there's an additional wire to fuse box if your seat has lumbar support)
1 for cecm

When i fitted a up to 2006 loom there was an additional wire to the above and i couldn't figure out where it goes. Wiring it to an ignition cleared the fault code but the seats still didn't heat up.

Cheers Raz.

My loom has more wires than you are suggesting above. I've got a total of 13 wires i think.

2 for ground
3 for heater panel
4 thick wires - fuse panel? I have lumbar support
2 into 1 - ? thought that was cecm?
2 more wires - shorter and thin?
1 longer wire -  long enough to get to control panel

Going to have to take a picture when i get a chance. I've buried it under the trim near the bonnet release handle for the moment. :happy2:

Which loom did you buy? If you bought the 2007+ loom then it could be its for a lhd and you will have to swap the looms that are under the seats to convert them back to rhd.

Sounds like the loom you got might also be for the memory seats.

So you have a module under each seat?
The four wires remaining, are they the four thick wires marked KL30 you mentioned earlier?

2 are for constant live (dauerplus) (fuse box)
2 are constant live (sitzverstell.) (seat adjustment)

I'll have a look properly when I get home, it's difficult to work out on the phone.

Hi Jas,

I'm not actually sure if there is a module under both seats.  I'll check when i get a chance, hopefully i can see without taking the seats out.
Yeh the four thick wires hace that marking, and are noticeably thicker than the rest, with a bigger connection on the ends.

The way to determine which loom you need is if you have the little module box under the passenger seat or under both front seats.

Loom #34048 is the 'upto 2006' loom.
#34048-2 is the loom with seat adjustment (no memory), upto 2006

It looks like if you select the 'with memory' option on kufatec, you get the same #34048-2, so you may have extra wires left over for the memory function which are not required.

As retroraz says, this means you should have a control module under each seat.
This is the same loom I fitted and it comes with the wire lengths for left hand drive, and so the drivers and passenger seat modules are the wrong way wrong.
So you either need to extend the wires so that they reach the correct modules, or reverse the wires at the heater control panel.
I extended the wires.

Next up, we need to know:
Does your car have climatronic or climatic heating?
Do your seats have adjustment and or memory. Did you order the loom according to these options?

I'll take so pics.. :happy2:

In the mean time... Without looking at the car (not able to atm), both seats have the large black plug, male, on them, and the only button on both seats are the circle with the four indents. They are manual for back and forward and tilt. But I believe they do have the electric lumbar.

The loom itself seems to be rhd as the female black plugs to go to under the seats work out for length, ie the shorter one on rhs has the resulting earth wires and cecm, at the correct length to go to the earthing point just down from the bonnet release handle and cecm respectively.

Once I get a chance I'll untrim the car again and take a pic of the loom and also have a look at the seats...

Cheers for the help so far lads!  It's not too cold yet so my rear is still toasty!   :happy2:

And I reckon it's a case of having extra un-needed wires like you say Jason

Here's the pics of the seats, still havnet had a chance to get the trim off the get pics of the loom,  but the bag the loom came in had 34048-2 on it.

1. Both seats have the four button
2. Drivers seat underneath
3. Drivers black male connection
4. Passenger's under seat
5. Passenger's black male connection

The button on each seat is the lumbar adjustment.
Looks like you have a module under each seat and the loom part number looks correct.

So, using the table from the guide, together with the kufatec instructions, and the notes in my previous comment, you should be able to label each wire and see what you're left with?

If there is anything left over, it may be for seat memory which probably won't be on your seats anyway.

So, having another go at this now...

The wires are labelled as per the kufatec table/pic on page 4 of this guide.  My question now is do I need all four 'fuse' wires?  Two 30amp (sitxverstell/seat adjustment) and two 20amp (the Dauerplus)?  ACTAULLY JUST NOTICED - on page 1 of here you mention the lumber being 20amp and live being 30amp, but the kufatec guide has this the other way around!??????????

Also have the 3 15 amp wires for the fuse box!  Where should I put them?

So basically I've got 7 wires to find a home in the fuse box it seems?
Title: Re: How To: Mk5 Heated Seats Retrofit

So you should have:
Thick wire, 30A for heated seats x 2?
Thick wire 20A for lumbar adjustment x 2?
Thin wire 5A for ignition live for heated seats.

That's 5, which leaves 2 not required for seat memory?

Yep! And you reckon that's the fuse rating above? 30 for heat and 20 for lumber?  Makes sense to have the heating at 30 I suppose..

So where to put them all?

And so yeh, perhaps the longer of the thin wires for the 5A?  The other two thin are a pair.. See pic!...

Ok, in the fuse box, look at the positions in my guide, but ultimately you're looking for a slot that has feed. You can tell the difference between one with a feed and a blank one as the one with a feed had a metal connector to accept one leg of the fuse.

The other leg it made by inserting the relevant wire from the heated seat loom which will then make a complete 'socket' for the fuse.

Use a multimeter to test for constant / ignition live, find the ones you need insert the wire from the loom.

Nearly there!! :)

Nice one Jason, think that makes sense! Am I looking for 12v when the ignition is on, and then 0v when turned off? And use this principle for all 5 wires that I need to get in to the fuse box? Hopefully get at this again tomorrow afternoon! :happy2:

Hmm, went to see about getting the wires plugged in to the fuse box, and none of the suggested pin holes, 34 etc have the one part of the feed, they are all empty, see pic, apart from a few, but no big ones, only the smaller connection/fuse.

Stuck, help!

That's wierd, no slots available!
As Raz says, you can get a couple of piggy back adapters.

And reference your question about voltage. For constant live, you're looking for 12v even when ignition is off.

For ignition live, 12v only when ignition on.

So to recap, I need to find 4 constant lives, for the 4 thick wires, and 1 ignition live.

I'll go and take a look on ebay at the piggyback fuses.. cheers fellas! :happy2:

Edit... been looking at these piggy back fuses.... It looks like i'll have to change the connections on the end of the wires to something that will slot into the wire coming from the piggy back setup, i can't find one that will take the current lock pin type (not sure what the term for this is?)

And i think i'm correct in saying that i can have two different size fuses in to the 2 slots of the piggy back block?

Going off the kufatec instructions you need:
2 x KL30 for 20A constant live
3 x KL15 for 15A ignition live

The other 2 x KL30 for seat adjustment, just tape up out the way.

To allow you to make progress and confirm your thoughts and work done, why not take a temporary fused feed from the battery and prove you've got everything else correct.

I'm not sure I follow you?  I've got the 7 wires left, and just need the sort out which of the 7 wires left I need. And how to go about buying a piggyback fuse with the matching fixings to the current wires..

The kufatec instructions seem to suggest that I need to plug all 7 in! (sh*t instructions, if this isn't the case!)

I assume your only interested in the heated seats working and not the lumber or memory seat.
So with that in mind if you connect the two heaviest connector to a temporary fused supply you'll be able to check if there's a feed to the under seat modules, that would be my starting point.

I have gone back and checked my installation, I only had 3 wires at the fuse box.
Unless some of these wires make a 'pair' for a fuse Connection?

I would call richter sport to see if they can help shed some light on why the loom has changed?

Richer Sport are the UK contact for kufatec.

I'll look at some wiring diagrams tomorrow to try work it out.

Well, phoned richter today and they were basically no help!!!  I explained about the loom perhaps being the same as a loom for memory seas and that i needed to find out what the 7 cables that I have did individually, they didn't know the answer and suggested that if they speak to kufatec, who they deal with all the time, they won't get an answer to my basic question of what cable does what!!!  Useless and not very helpful!

They said i should fit them all and then take them out one by one to rule them out as to what cable would be for the memory! wtf!

Oh well!

Ordered up some fuses and piggyback fuses too
Title: Re: How To: Mk5 Heated Seats Retrofit
Post by: Gmac on November 15, 2017, 05:17:24 pm
Piggy back fuses bought and fitted, had to get two normal and four minis.  I’ve wired up the 4 permanent fuses (2 20amp, 2 30 amp). Also wired up the single ignition 15 amp.  Activated in vcds, but measuring block 10 in module 9 says inactive, when I’ve turned on the seats, and been sat in the seat. Lumbar doesn’t work either.

So i’m going to wire up the other 2 15amp ignition wires, (will be 7 total wired to the fuse box!) and see if this helps...
Title: Re: How To: Mk5 Heated Seats Retrofit
Post by: Gmac on November 21, 2017, 03:21:03 pm
Well I wired up the remaining two 15amp fuse wires, so 7 extra in total in the fuse box!  And tada, the lumbar works and the heated seats worked! Worked, but for some reason now they aren’t working! Not had a chance to check what’s going on, hopefully it’s just a fuse either slack or blown and a replacement will get them working again.. getting there!

ok, so not sure if it’s the wiring or normal behaviour, but my drivers seat will only heat up if the passenger seat is also put on at the 1-5 dial on climate control panel. Is this normal?

Sorry for resurrecting an old thread - @Gmac (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=15788) did you ever get this working? I will be looking at doing this soon and trying to figure out how to do it

I never got it sorted, so ive got heat in my drivers seat but not in the passenger seat, no idea why, and haven’t had the time or the drive to go looking again.  When I first wired it up the passenger seat control heated the drivers seat, and i actually think the drivers control wasn’t heating the passenger seat (it was my young daughter that said it was working, so was probably placibo).  I then swapper the wires over and have now got the drivers seat heated.

Sorry that doesn’t help much.  All I remember is that the instructions for the wiring loom from kufatec were rubbish ( all my wiring was grey and the instructions referenced colours).

Quick question to anyone that has done this retrofit with the Kufatec loom. Instead of cutting and extending the cables that go to the seats would it work to just cut and extend the wires that go to the fuses? So wire it up as you would a LHD car and then just run the power around the dash to the driver side fuse switches? I assume there is a ground point at passenger side anyway. Thoughts?

Hello,

Here we go again guys!!!

Please someone give me some guidance on this as im about to give up! Does anybody have a wiring diagram for this or knows where the wires go? The car is an edition 30 2007 year.

Trying to fit aftermarket buckets (VXR Recaros) into the car but i dont know how to wire the seats to the car. The recaro seats come with heating, side airbag and seat belt sensor... the seats have the following wires on both seats.

Both seats come with the seat belt occupancy wires (2 black wires).

Both seats come with 4 single wires.

This is what it looks like from the car side.

Driver side

Where do each of the wires go from the seats or how can I find out? :( anyone please?? I really want all the features to work as my car came with heating and seat belt warning when the standard tartan seats where installed. Dont want to loose the features.

Thank you.

Hello,

Here we go again guys!!!
...

Do the Vxr seats have any kind of modules underneath like the golf seats did?
Those wires in the picture, has the original connector been chopped off? There should be a connector that will connect to the plug in the floor of the car.

The seats don't simply work from voltage, there are signals from the heater control panel, to CECM to Heated seat module.
If your car is 2007 with factory fitted heated seats, it will have had only one heated seat module, under the passenger seat (drivers seat on a left hand drive).

Most of the info you need is at the start of this guide with regards to the car side of things, but it might not help much if you're missing the modules for you seats.

On the car side, the pins are as follows:
UK Drivers Side:
1 - n/a
2 - n/a
3 - n/a
4 - switch (climate control panel)
5 - ground
6 - n/a
7 - n/a
8 - n/a
9 - n/a
10 - to passenger seat module

UK Passenger Side:
1 - Feed to central electrics module
2 - switch (climate control panel)
3 - power for heated seats (30A fuse)
4 - joins to drivers seat pin 4.
5 - ground
6 - n/a
7 - n/a
8 - n/a
9 - n/a
10 - to passenger seat module

Your best bet is to try and find the wiring diagram for the vxr seats and compare.
Or you could get a set of gold seats, strip them down and retro fit into the vxr seats, then you can just plug and play?

A huge thank you for replying back to me! Much appreciated....No I cant see any modules other than a bunch of wires. The wiring connector was chopped off when I bought the seats originally. Thank you for the diagram, sounds like I cant do anything without the seat modules ?  Maybe I should sell them and get my original Tartan seats back.. I wouldn’t want to attempt stripping them down as I wouldn’t know where to start unless there is a guide on it.

Thanks.

Heated seat modules are easy and cheap to get.
So you just need to understand the wiring on the seats themselves and you should be able to sort it out.

Do you know what year / model car the seats came from?

how does the module work? I am looking at the pictures and can only see 1 location for a plug to go into?  If the floor connects to that plug then how do the seat wiring connect to the module? if its a wiring loom, do you have the diagram for that wiring loom? If you can, I wouldnt mind the part numbers for a wiring loom and heated seat module so I can go ahead and buy it. As for the vxr seats, the year is 2007. Doesnt say much else other than that.

Thanks.

So I am lead to believe that what I need to sort the wiring out is:

1. Genuine heated seat wiring loom for the passenger and the driver side seats (1 genuine loom will do or 2 or do I need to buy the kufatec loom?)
2. Heated seat module for the passenger side

Right?

If your car already had factory fitted heated seats, the loom is already in place (car side), which is what gives you the 10 pin plug in the floor under each seat.

S you need the looms for the seats themselves and 1 heated seat control module which is fitted under the passenger seat.

These looms I don't think are available from kufatec. The kufatec loom is for the car side.

Im guessing the loom your talking about (under the seat) looks like this https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/bvcAAOSwaEhZFMH4/s-l1600.jpg    ??

If I am right, the loom connects to all the components on the seat itself so the airbag, heated seat and seat belt sensor and then the same loom connects into the heated seat module as well as under the floor 10 pin plug and play? So when I buy the loom, I keep the connectors for the module and under the floor but then cut the rest off and wire them to the cars wires?

Also why only 1 module not 2? If the wiring loom will connect to the module on the passenger side... What will the plug connect into on the driver side if there is no module? Or does the driver side loom not have the connector for the module only the passenger does?

Nearly have the confidence to try this myself! :)

Thanks.

Hi,
Yes, you can connect the airbags as they are a separate (yellow) connector. You should already have the connector coming out of the floor under the seat for the car side, and your new seats will have the matching connector.
Connect them together.
The heated seats work on their own circuits so can be completed when you're ready  :happy2:

They should still physically connect together ok? Or are they totally different shape?
Are the seats from an earlier year golf?

They look similar but they do not connect physicaly... I dont know the year of the seats..
Maybe i should try to connect cables from brown Cable and then thw middle one and then the last one.. seems a bit risky , airbag could launch and by by seat 😄
By some logic the order od cables should go that way

After 2006, the airbag connectors changed, I guess the same as with the heated seat wiring.
You can leave them disconnected if you need to drive the car (you will get the airbag light on the dash which means the airbag system is disabled).
This light will need to be cleared later using VCDS.

I guess its a case of checking the wiring diagrams for pre / post 06 to seat which wires should match to which.
You could get the relevant connectors and make a convertor loom bridge between car and seat.
Or cut the connectors and connect with crimp terminals (bullet collectors).

Or you can make up a new connector with a resistor to make the car think the seat airbags are there when infact they are not connected.

i really want my airbags to work, because i love to drive fast and its better to be safe than sorry. i have googled few hours and find something similar on this forum..  https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,64615.0.html
i mean it is the same situation just in reverse, 2004 mk5 and mk6 seats, mine is 2007 mk5 and probably seats from 2004/2005 year. i will give it a go tomorrow and let you know the result

******UPDATE*****
i have done as i have writen above and gone to a local mechanic to remove the airbag error and it seems that it all works , i am driving it for a few days now and the error is not repeating again.. thanx for the help

Hi Jason,

I read your instructions several times before I ventured to buy leather seats. I have a 56 plate golf gti that came with Tartan standard seats.
Ive installed the leather seats got the kufatec wiring loom up to 2006 and the climatronic control with heated switches. Ive worked out by your instructions where all the wires go but the problem I have is that in my fuse box i only have 2 spare switched lives (fuse positions 5 and 6)
and one live at fuse position 16. Ive included a pic of my fuse box. Any ideas on how to connect the wires to the fusebox would be welcome.
I don't really want to use piggy back fuses as they look unprofessional IMG_0016.jpg

Just wanted to provide an update on this as I installed my heated seats last week. Picked up a set of Edition 30 seats and installed along with the Kufatec wiring loom.

I think I bought the wrong loom though as I didn’t have enough wires to power the electric lumber support but the heating elements work. In hindsight, I think it’s better to order the version with the electric adjustment even if you don’t need it as you don’t have to wire it up and allows any future upgrade. In my case I was short of wires so will just feed the power to the lumber separately later but for now it’s not a problem as they are set in a good position for me (so may not even bother).

I did do things a little differently to the instructions from the original post. I went about installing it as if it was a left hand drive car so feeding the wires down the left side trims, to the passenger seat and then across to the driver’s seat on the right. I cut and extended the wires that needed to go to the right hand driver’s fuse box (as it meant less wires to cut and extend) and passed it through the back of the dash and then connected it up as instructed. So far everything working great (although I find that anything above settings 4 gets really toasty on your backside!!!!).

I did find that getting the wires to connect and stay in the CESM/fuse box was a right pig to do. Would also recommend people to have several spare fuses ready as I didn’t and ended up having to pull others out to test which is not ideal. And don’t do what I did and start at 7pm on a day where it was raining on and off. All in it took me (and mate) 5 hours to do and an additional hour following day to put the dash and trims back together. I do have 1 screw left over which is super annoying so will have to dismantle some trims to see where I forgot to put it in.

Hi I'm new to this forum and hope someone can help me out here. I have a 57 reg Golf diesel which has cloth trim along with non heated seats and non electric seats at present. So the only connectors that I have is the two small ones yellow and black which are for airbag and seat occupancy sensor I believe. I have bought some leather heated seats with electric lumbar support these are from a 2004 Golf and have modules on each drivers seat.
My understanding is that i need to procure the Kufatec loom and am unsure of which one to get. My car also has the climatic control module the one which is not digital. I also have the climatic control unit from the 2004 model golf that the seats came out from. My golf has AC on the climatic control unit. The climatic control that came with the seats has the buttons for heated seats but no AC button instead it says ECON.
Is this unit compatible with my Golf as in will the AC still work ? Or do i need to get another CECM module for the AC to work etc.
Due to my car being a 57 or 2007 reg and the seats being 2004 which Kufatec loom should I order upto 2006 or 2007 onwards

Also i'm a little confused on which wiring configuration i should be using i believe it will be Climatic not sure on the pin configuration due to car being 2007 model and seats and cecm being 2004 model.

Lastly the yellow connector on my original seats looks to be a slightly different shape to the ones on the 2004 seats. I haven't tried to install the seats as yet. Will this connector  fit as is or will it need chopping and changing from my old seats ? the colours are different brown, green , white on 2004 yellow connector and brown, blue black on original . Will the 2004 seat yellow connector just fit or need chopping off from current seats ?

Could somebody please help ?

Thanks In Advance. Apologies for all the questions.

Not even one response !!!

Can anyone tell me which side of the Kufatec loom is short and by how much as Kufatec can custom build the loom they just need to know the length to extend by ?? Can anyone help ??

It’s about a meter short is what I found. You probably want a 1.5m just to be sure and give you slack

Thanks I have requested up to 2006 loom from Kufatec custom made with an additional 1.5m length both sides . Let's see what they say now..

In the guide it mentions the CECM wire connection if you have a Climatic heater control do you not need the below CECM connection as in the guide it is only mentioned under climatronic heater controls and not for climatic...

CECM
White (double crimp)   CECM, Connector C, Pin 1

Second question is for the fuse box section would you find spare terminals that are not in use on the fuse board and then check the voltage etc  and use those or piggy back off existing required fuse ratings ??
I haven't as yet checked if there are any spares in the fuse box area...

I don’t think the connection differs whether it’s climatic or climatronic but I could be wrong. Can try looking on eBay for pictures of the back to see if they differ.

As for the fuse box - I used empty slots and put new fuses in (so make sure you have spares ready as I ended up having to take out others to test and it was annoying especially as I ended up blowing a couple)

How much extra was it to have kufatec custom make the extension?

Awaiting a response from Kufatec as of yesterday..I hope the same price

So I take it that the  connection below is compulsory to CECM whether you have Cimatronic or Climatic ?
Can anyone comment on this ? In the guide there are dashes against the Climatic option with or without AC...

White (double crimp)   CECM, Connector C, Pin 1

Kufatec have responded saying they will not extend the cabling and modifications have been done already. (they haven't tested on a RHD vehicle though). Kufatec support also stated that if the wires are short then I should let them know which wire and by how much and they will send the relevant extension out !! I have ordered a set in any case. They also advised if I needed any support to query with Richter Sport their reseller in the UK. I don't know how helpful they will be  ??

One query I still have is whether the CECM connection is required. In the guide in the table it only lists the requirement for climatronic.. which I do not...

NoAC/Climatic/Climatronic connections in the back (20pin?) connector are different for heated seats. Have a look at the mk5/mk6 wiring diagrams.  The kufatec instructions do mention this also (climatic vs climatronic).

There should be three 'small' wires to be plugged in the rear control unit; used for the heater controls and thermometer signal for each seat. IIRC, the wires should be black/blue and white/blue.

I'm clear on the connections the only query I have is ref this one wire

Whether the CECM connection is required. In the guide in the table it only lists the requirement for climatronic.. which I do not...

Kufatec refused to extend the cabling saying this had already been done previously.. They did say if extension was required to let them know which cable and how much needed extending and they would send the cable out.. How convenient !! not ...

So,
Need some help.
I brought some mk5 leather heated seats with lumbar support on my golf mk6.
The differences between tutorials are blowing my head.
The mk6 needs 1 module under seat for the both of them and my seats have module for each seat - 2 modules unde the seat with the same amount of wires. White, Brown, 2 blue wires (blue white, blue black), red/yellow (positive) and a red black wire (i guess is the comunication with the other seat)

I followed the steps for the golf 6 on this golf 5and doesnt work.
Any ideas helping me?
Also, i realizeze that the seats have a donor from rightside. (i have a left side wheel)

So... If anybody can help me let me know.
Regards,   :pomppomp:

Did you buy new loom or secondhand? Are they not labelled with stickers at the ends?

Brand new from tuning fanatics on eBay. Looking at their shop they sell loads of kufatec stuff but I've asked for a  diagram and got ghosted.

There are some numbers on the wires but don't really equate to anything. Unless the coloured wires have the same numbers on them??

Have you tried contacting kufatec to see if they can provide support?
