Title: Wheel spacers
Post by: Andy on May 09, 2020, 09:48:36 am
Debating whether to fit wheel spacers but obviously don't want them to catch the archs and with H&r springs.. Sure some fit 10mm front and 20mm rear

I once had 8mm spacers with the oem 18" Huffs/Detroit(US). When I got my current 18x8 45et wheels, I put the 8mm spacers on and it rubbed hard on its first short drive. So I removed them immediately and there is now just enough clearance so it doesn't rub. I am probably lower than you so spacers of 10mm might work if not as low....but 20mm?

Add your wheel size, offset, and tire you will use. A pic from the side or the FTG(fender to ground) measurement will be helpful as well.

Here's mine with the forementioned 18x8 45et with 225/40-18 on H&R SuperSport springs;

This shows the offset;

10mm front should be fine but 20mm on the rear I'd say will definitely rub.

I’m running 10mm front 15mm rear with 30mm H&R lowering springs (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200511/898b3daaa3644d1aae53cd41e57983e5.jpg)

No mate none at all. I did remove the inner arch top bolt from the front wings, just to give that little extra clearance

Cheers

Lowered 30mm with eibach and B8s  No rubbing. :happy2:  Sure I paid £55 for a set of 4.  You know the score. A good 1/2 hr search will get you a good price :wink:

Bear in mind the Golf's rear track is much narrower than the front's for typical hot hatch handling characteristics.  Start mucking about with spacers for 'stance' and aesthetics and the scrub radius and handling suffer.

If you do want to push the back out more, consider Scirocco alloy hubs for unsprung mass reduction and +15mm per side more track, then balance it with 10mm spacers at the front to maintain a wider front track.  You'll need to camber in the front the wheels to avoid arch fouling though, plus removing the middle arch liner screw/mount. +15-20mm at the back will likely catch the arches if you load the car enough, or drive it hard enough, but for physical confirmation before driving it, remove the springs and dampers and jack the wheels up as far as they'll go into the arch to check the clearance.

Is there any issue running 11mm spacers front and rear on an Ed30 with Stock wheels with handling etc ? Or can I just have 11’s on the rear or will that upset anything ?
Not wanting to lower the car as I live near many Speed humps so just wanna bring out rears a touch and not touch the front preferably.

Only you can answer those questions after you've driven it on your local roads mate  :happy2:

I would perhaps choose 10mm front, 10mm rear if your roads are bumpy.

You can also achieve the same track widening by using Scirocco rear hubs (+15mm) and Passat front hubs (+10mm I believe, but can't find confirmation). It's a neater, oem solution  :happy2:
