Title: Garth's GTI build thread
Post by: Garth on November 01, 2009, 08:23:28 am
Right then, since I've had the car just over a month, I thought I'd start my own build thread.
Don't be expecting massive changes as I'm all about subtle modding and try to keep things looking OEM.

I bought the car as a bog standard 2005 GTI in pretty shabby condition after haggling quite a bit off the asking price and this is what it looked like:

It was complete with dent in the boot, and damaged rear badge with plenty of corrosion, dents in the doors, scratched rear quarter light, ripped leather and corroded wheel centre caps.

The first thing I did was buy it some new mats and a Parrot bluetooth handsfree kit with a steering wheel interface. Here is that lot going in
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fss335%2Fgarthfred%2FImage014.jpg&hash=16f998f37ff72d74d19b7ad8c93897ecc7016d46)

Then the next job was to replace the quarter light and get dent wizard to knock out all the dents. I bought a full set of centre caps for the wheels from VW and repaired the torn leather seat.

I then set about sorting out the rear badge by removing the corroded part:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fss335%2Fgarthfred%2FSL271765.jpg&hash=bb6443108889ca844cc4b8a142c4da34d149bb37)
sanding down the handle and filling the small hole:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fss335%2Fgarthfred%2FSL271779.jpg&hash=b1c61a65d0eb5d02817cf6893d7d10e560792e74)
I then bought a mk4 rear badge (as you can't buy one to fit the original mk5 handle  ). I split this down to it's parts:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fss335%2Fgarthfred%2FSL271762.jpg&hash=cf3621de4e9f055bf13eac62a61f1d1b01b7c832)
I removed the complete handle assembly and sprayed it steel grey to match the car
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fss335%2Fgarthfred%2FSL271791.jpg&hash=00174626482389eda7923a58bd5eec1b1dd2c89e)
and then fixed the chrome part of the mk4 badge to it
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fss335%2Fgarthfred%2FSL271796.jpg&hash=9649b36387405da907850abb43d773acc5bed36a)
which then left me with this (this was before the dent was removed!):
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fss335%2Fgarthfred%2FSL271799.jpg&hash=b31f3a7530393babc0cb5fb608c3a8592aa4453d)

More to follow.....

You can all flame me if you want, but I don't like the red stripe on the grille (except on a red car) so I wrapped it in light grey vinyl, taking the front of the car from this:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fss335%2Fgarthfred%2FSL271781.jpg&hash=7e6f99df68430aa37ed2cfb88f6aec4884a9fa68)
to this:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fss335%2Fgarthfred%2FSL271802.jpg&hash=0ca35b3bb332b542418948c8a9f6c1c97a2278be)

I then decided to spray the front badge satin black so the front ended up like this:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fss335%2Fgarthfred%2FSL271842.jpg&hash=64dbbb1b434bfa81222af266dfab7e81fb087795)
But I'm not convinced it works, so I may go back to a chrome one soon ???

I've replaced all bulbs inside and out with white ones as I hate the standard yellow.

Yesterday I fitted these little beauties taking the seat from this:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fss335%2Fgarthfred%2FSL271852.jpg&hash=baaefa9718df4369a2c524110703725472e1e86f)
to this:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fss335%2Fgarthfred%2FSL271856.jpg&hash=7f0223d79f40d28b238c0253fdb2a6ae8ceba232)

I also removed the side repeaters from the wing mirrors last night to smoke them as they are too light on a dark grey car. The photos of this will follow in a few hours when I've put it all back together!

My new wheels arrive on Tuesday so I'll post up some pics of the car once they're on. It needs a good clean and polish so hopefully that'll get done this weekend. Then the next thing will be to fit some Eibach sportlines.
If anyone has these springs only on stock shocks can give me an HONEST opinion of what the ride is like with these please let me know. Too many people lower their car and have it turn in to a hard, crashy dog but they still claim it's "only slightly harder than standard" because they're unwilling to admit they ruined the ride. I drive over 100 miles a day and need a little comfort!

Looking good there, kinda like the grey strip too  :happy2:

Re the sportlines, I have them fitted to standard dampers and they are great, little bit firmer than standard but all round hardly noticeable! I had coilovers on my last car and that did ruin it for me as it was way too harsh but these are perfect imo couldnt be happier  :happy2:

Soem cracking little mods there matey, I like the grey stripe on the grill, it suits it better than the red IMO! Looking forward to seeing it with new wheels and springs  :happy2:

Looking good.

I have the Eibach springs on standard dampers and they are fine as wine!  Slightly more firm but all acceptable.

And what wheels are you getting?

looks good mate, what about losing the dealer decal below the front plate?.

Thanks for all the postive comments  :drinking:

And what wheels are you getting?
RS6 reps. I want something other than monza's bu want to stay OEM style.
looks good mate, what about losing the dealer decal below the front plate?.
I will do, but it is actually part of the plate itself. I will be getting some some new plates soon. I don't really want to advertise the garage either as I was less than impressed with them. Well spotted

Anyway, the indicators are back on now...
Before:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fss335%2Fgarthfred%2FSL271858.jpg&hash=dbede35dc4d8b215c8a645290bcb882cd7b0872e)
After:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fss335%2Fgarthfred%2FSL271866.jpg&hash=d88d0697e7639795882ffb3e8df964fa4e56b974)
The colour looks a little odd in the photo due to the camera flash but in the flesh it blends in perfectly with the black plastic. They still work perfectly too

More photos will follow on Tuesday once the wheels are on. Hopefully I can get myself some Eibach springs soon but it will most likely be next month now.

My wheels STILL haven't turned up!

A word of advice for you all, think VERY carefully before you order from dp motorsport on ebay: http://stores.shop.ebay.co.uk/DP-MOTORSPORT-CAR-MOD-S__W0QQ_armrsZ1

Every time I phone them, their response is: "they'll be with you tomorrow". I can't even get a reason why they are over 1 week late since they were in stock when I ordered them and it's 48 delivery!

Good heads up on the ebay shop Garth. Your cars almost identical to mine btw  :innocent:

Have you mentioned/threatened action will be taken if and when etc...?
I hope they pull their finger out and the wheels appear ASAP :happy2:

Hi Garth

You must be a Yorkshire lad.

Don't believe it, looked at that same car myself.  Wife didn't like the colour or it could have been on my drive now....
You must be a lot better than me at haggling cos there wasn't much movement on price when I turned up, but they had only got the car in.

Love the subtle mods you have done so far.  Think I may give the MK4 badge a go too.  IMO the red lip stick looks good on a black car as well as a red.

Looking forwards to more updates.

Keep up the good work

Lee

I got a full refund after 2 weeks of lies, never saw the wheels! I eventually ordered the same wheels from Wheelbase and drove down on Monday morning to get them   They on the car now, just waiting for the photos to upload as I type.

Yep, live in Leeds mate. Did you think the car was a bit of a state when you looked at it too? I think they must have had it in a while which is why I got so much off it. I have spent about £500 just getting it back to a nice condition before I started modding it. Think youreself lucky you didn't buy it as it is a bit of a money pit! There's plenty of electrical gremlins in it with things like the rear wiper, folding mirrors and lumbar support all decding to stop working intermittently.

Here's a quick couple of photos of the latest mods... I know the car needs washing badly, I will do it this weeked, I promise!

Wheels:

Lowering may be a problem now as there's not much clearance:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fss335%2Fgarthfred%2FSL271889.jpg&hash=7199451627511984208ef71491feffd1f1bebfb0)
They rub on the screw in the front arch over vaery big bumps, so I need to sort that out.

You can tell they're cheap by the number of weights on the damn things  :congrats:

Yep live in Calverley just between Leeds and Bradford.

Think the car had just come in when I looked at it.  The main problem was the wife not liking the colour and having a "bad feeling" about it.

Sometimes if a car has been on the forecourt for a while it tells its own tales.

Car Star in Stanningley still has a red 3 door for sale, come down from 14K to 10k in 4 months.  Glad I gave that one a miss too, on the test drive it rattled and banged like.  Probably been in a bump and not recorded.

What did you do to the original wheels.  Still on the lookout for genuine ones at the right price if you are selling.

Keep up the mods.  I will look out for you

Dont suppose you've come across any photos of the RS6's/S-Lines painted gunmetal in your travels?

I have a set of S-Lines from an A3 I was considering painting and putting them on the GTi.

Yes, I have seen these in grey on white and red mk5's and they look very good, but I wouldn't do it on a grey car.

New updates:

I didn't like the black badge on the front, so I sprayed it grey to match the paintwork and I'm much happier with it now
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fss335%2Fgarthfred%2FSL271919.jpg&hash=d54f8f0772b216d82d811283bfb8fe06c74259c1)

I also have got to work with my soldering iron to replace all the orange led's in the instruments which look really naff in my opinion. I have so far replaced all of the orange led's with red in the buttons and have only the fan speed indicator to finish. I'm going to do this blue to match the dials, but need the perfect blue led's to match everything. I now need a standard stereo to rip apart for the led's  My fiance's mk4 stereo was butchered for the red ones but the correct size I need are the ones that illuminate the screen in the mk5 stereos. Progress so far:

That's what I thought
It doesn't bother me though as the tyres are not staying on for long. I'll be getting a new set of F1's or Pilot Sport's in the new year. I'm presuming it's the tyres that need all the weights and not the wheels themselves, but either way as long as they're balanced I'm happy

I was thinking of white too for the led's but I want everything in the car to match perfectly, hence the red.

Going to finish off the led's this weekend. Finally I can get rid of the awful yellow/orange fan speed indicator
Should look sweet when it's all finished.

LED's are now all done. Thank god I've finaly got rid of those horrible amber ones!

I wanted to match the dials as best I could, so I went with the red line theme

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fss335%2Fgarthfred%2FImage0060.jpg&hash=d0fa41d48caf5ca4d1e54d800066a7c43c10d513)

In the dark, it now looks like this:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fss335%2Fgarthfred%2FImage0061.jpg&hash=609587e74286f7f6973768432924b9039f1927ac)

I'm very pleased with them too as they now match the rest of the interior perfectly.

I then set about the rear lights and since I'm not prepared to pay the obsene amount of money for ED30 lights, I thought I'd do my own:

All masked up:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fss335%2Fgarthfred%2FImage0048.jpg&hash=36e393109aaec725e87c4bcfdca9dbd9a814c802)

Tinted:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fss335%2Fgarthfred%2FImage0049.jpg&hash=682df05d945f6400e3f6f18ae0b59fa790707e7c)

I'll get them on the car today and see how they look. I only did a very light tint to start with as I don't want some chav black lights! If they need to be any darker, I'll get them off and give them another coat.

 :happy2:

Thanks.
Well spotted, it does not have the black GTI headlights. I can only assume that it either it was not fitted with them originally, or the lease company that owned it before me had some repairs done and replaced them with non-standard. The cars had some paintwork done for sure, so I'm guessing the latter. It doesn't bother me too much as I got hte car dirt cheap and I'm going to run it in to the ground before I sell it. 800 miles per week at the mo, so in a year or 2 it will be worth nowt anyways!

Tail lights are back on now.  Before:

I think they're a little too subtle, so I might do them a bit darker in a couple of weeks when I next have time.

Note this photo was taken before I washed the car... It's clean now, honest!

I've finally replace dmy Parrot Bluetooth kit with something more OEM. I've now fitted a Skoda bluetooth kit to integrate with my RCD510 (it's a 729E version) which works superbly.

I've also been doing a little more with my climate controls and have replaced the black on blue with red on black, Audi style. This matches the MFD perfectly, although it doesn't photograph well. I'm really pleased with this mod as I hated the blue screens and since I'll be changing the dial LED's from blue to white, the climate displays need to fit in better with the rest of the dash.

Loving all you touches up mate... car looks fab and i Steel Grey is a fab colour for the GTi :happy2: I'm from Wakefield, which is faairly near Leeds, a few lads are meeting up together sometime from West Yorkshire, so i'll give you a tab when we do

If i'm totally honset, I'm not all that keen on the wheels, somehow i don't think they go well with the GTi.

No probs, I'd be up for a meet sometime.

Don't worry about your thoughts on the wheels. It's be a dull world if we all liked the same things  :happy2:

Love some of the mods.

How about a guide for changing the LEDs?
Thanks. I might do a guide at some point for the LEDS when I get time. I've changed them again.... see below. In the meantime, I did find this one on changing dial LED's and it's the same process for the climate controls:
http://golfmkv.com/forums/showthread.php?p=2242183 (http://golfmkv.com/forums/showthread.php?p=2242183)

HOWEVER, I would not recommend anyone doing this unless they're pretty competent at soldering. The reason for that is that it's easy to balls it up! I did a degree in electronic engineering and I still managed to strip one of the solder pads off. This lead me to have to make a fly wire to repair it as shown below
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fgarthfred%2FDials_and_LEDs%2FImage0238.jpg&hash=510e166eefa7bf1bfd9a8798f180789804e1aa46)

Anyway, I have now repaled all the dial LED's from blue to white, which looks much nicer:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fgarthfred%2FDials_and_LEDs%2FImage0248.jpg&hash=6809e9b1dac20abce1148c3c37e33cd49b796b39)

And i've re-done the fan speed indicator (AGAIN!), this time in white to match the dials, so the whole lot looks like this now:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fgarthfred%2FDials_and_LEDs%2FImage0249.jpg&hash=735446811fd2d0b1d3bc8e09205deb9c9653d4ae)

It doesn't photograph well and the fan indicator looks much brighter on camera for some reason. Everything matches perfectly in the flesh though

In the daytime it looks like this:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fgarthfred%2FDials_and_LEDs%2FImage0247.jpg&hash=d09761af85164e933b868d0b7d89cc5d0e01eba3)

I just can't get the climate displays to photograph well, day or night!
I replaced the cruise icon's green LED with a blue one just for the hell of it too, which is nice

That's it for the interior LED's now, I've got it looking just the way I want it now, it much nicer than the standard multi-colour set up in my opinion  :drinking:

Hi,

What Tint spray or spray did you use for the rear lights, how many coats did you use and did you apply a clear lacquer at the end ??

Also the badge (front) what spray did you use, is it just a simple matter of a job as spraying a different colour or did you need to sand it down etc etc...

The tint spray was this:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/E-TECH-LIGHT-TINTING-SPRAY-BLACK-SMOKE-LENS-TINT-NEW_W0QQitemZ350332436957QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM?hash=item519170c1dd (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/E-TECH-LIGHT-TINTING-SPRAY-BLACK-SMOKE-LENS-TINT-NEW_W0QQitemZ350332436957QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM?hash=item519170c1dd)

It really only needs a couple of reasonably light coats as it's very tough. To get it glossy, you can either lacquer it, spray it evenly in the first place, or polish it up the same as you would with paint. I opted for a combination of the last two. Polishing can only really be done with a machine as it's way too tough for polishing by hand.

The badge was sanded down as you cannot paint onto the chrome without it flaking straight off. After all the chrome was removed, a couple of coats of plastic primer were used then a couple of coats of metallic paint (e.g. from dealers or halfords etc) then a few coats of lacquer ( the more the better as it will get a lot of abuse from stones when driving!)

I've painted my brake calipers silver. The paint was nothing like the colour of the lid unfortunately so it's way lighter tha I wanted, but it will do until I find something better. I still much prefer it to the standard red:

Thanks TC. Well the reception is as good as it was before sitting on the drive. I haven't moved the car yet though and I have seen another thread where the guy said he had good reception sitting still then it got worse when driving.
Interestingly, when I was trying to find theproblem with my heater, Darren and I did a scan in VCDS which revealed a fault code with open circuit for the aerial. I'm thinking that the shark fin is not actually doing anything and the rear screen aerial is doing all the work. The connector for the shark fin has a spline running down it so that it wouldn't fit the connector in my car. I trimmed it off so it would fit in and the internals of the connectors do match up. It obviously isn't designed for this application which is why it probably doesn't work for most people.
I'm thinking because my car is an early model, the rear screen is all it really needs for reception.

I'm going to investigate a little more later, but as long as the radio works, I'm not fussed if the aerial is just for show

loving the look of the new shark fin aerial.  :happy2:

Yes, I do

Update on shark fin reception:
The radio reception has been affected by the aerial change. The reception is still great for the most part, but does break up a little in remote locations (like driving over the Pennines).
I need to check the wiring diagrams to see if there is something different on cars that have the shark fin as standard. It was available on the mk5, so perhaps there is a separate amplifier that should be used along side it.

It's not bad enough to want to change back, but it could irritate people if they listen to the radio a lot in remote areas.

Is that not why some mk5's have the bee sting and some the fin as there was problems with the fins reception?

No, it's to do with different specs. The reason everyone is getting poor reception when they retro fit the shark fin is because the wiring is not the same (even though it looks the same). The shark fin is seen by VCDS as an open circuit meaning there is some circuitry missing from the shark fin (like an amp maybe?) that is in the bee-sting.
Once I can get a look at ETKA and ELSA, I will be able to confirm.

Have a look further back in this thread, it explains

Right then, for those that wondered about the aerial reception:

There were only a few options on the mk5 and the ones that had the shark fin DID NOT use it for radio reception! The cars that had the small shark fin like mine had 2 aerial connections to the rear window. The shark fin was only used for the following:
1)Satellite reception for sat nav
2)Remote antenna for aux heater
3)Phone reception

The following are the 3 options:
1) Standard bee-sting aerial (06/05 onwards):
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fss335%2Fgarthfred%2Fbee-sting.jpg&hash=47785f2d4154c00cc4aaf417612ad879950c9405)

2) Shark fin for telephone and/or nav (05/05 onwards):
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fss335%2Fgarthfred%2Fshark-fin1.jpg&hash=0dc94e62916d4b708d97adf7f80c0dc9baf2402a)

3) Shark-fin for telephone and/or nav and/or aux heater (06/05 onwards):
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fss335%2Fgarthfred%2Fshark-fin2.jpg&hash=0a785fc3f49611668eefd028b98eea00149c201f)

This means if I want my perfact reception back, I need to convert my car from antenna/raer window to 2 rear window connections. I therefore need the small amplifier, which shouldn't be a problem.

Hopefully this will help others  :happy2:

Later Golfs used the sharkfin/beesting combo to give FM reception
Shame it looks a bit naff!

Update:
To get round the poor reception, I have identified a couple of options:
1) Get the wire and amp to utilise the other side of the rear screen as an antenna (connections already on the window)
2) Get the amp, strip it down, re-wire and connect it to the shark fin (not too much work really)
3) Re-attach the bee-sting and gaffer tape it to the underside of the roof, above the headlining.

Guess which option I took?

That's right... number 3  I will get round to a more permanent solution, but in the meantime, I just had the bee-sting lying around so I thought " wonder if..."

The reception is as good now as it ever was, even though the aerial is inside the car, not outside. This means that the shark-fin is just for show, but it still gives the result I was after: great reception and a shark fin on the roof  :happy2:

Due to my body falling apart, I now need an automatic for my daily driver as I cannot change gear 300-500 times a day anymore without my knee seizing up  :sad1:
I will therefore be putting the golf up for sale... unless someone has a dsg gearbox I can retrofit

I don't really think I could bring myself to buy a dsg GTI with a lower spec and then go through the process of making all the changes again, so I may have to leave VW ownership.

If anyone has a BMW 330d auto in saloon, coupe or convertible form and wants to swap for my GTI, please get in touch!

What have you done to you'r knee mate ?.  :scared:
Years of abuse have killed it. It's fine as long as I don't try carrying heavy items over big distances (which I did all weekend) or spend 10 hours a day in the car changing gears (which I do most days).

I'm sorry to hear this mate, if it helps i have the wiring from a german dsg car, if you find a DSG box let me know and i could send you the complete wiring and you could return the rest when done  :happy2:

hi Garth when you tinted your rear lights did you have to prep then first or did you just spray then
I simply cleaned them with alcohol and made sure they were spotless. The tint spray is designed for light clusters so no sanding is required or anything like that.

I FINALLY replaced the Sunew tyres (which are for sale if anyone wants some cheapo tyres!) with 4 new Goodyear Eagle F1 Assymetrics yesterday. I'll wait to see how they bed in before I give a verdict on them.

My new tyres on now on so the Sunew's are a thing of the past
I fitted 4 new Goodyear Eagle F1 Assymetrics and they have done a great job of improving the wet weather handling  :driver:

Today I received a boat load of sound deadening mat so looks like I'll be busy this weekend!

Also in the post are my new AP lowering springs so I'll hopefully be getting those fitted next week.

I'm on the lookout for an R32 (or simliar) front brake set up so if anyone knows of any for sale, let me know please  :happy2:

The project is getting back on track

Just started the soundproofing. The first piece is on, but it's very dark outside so I'll leave the rest til the weekend!

I've started with the bonnet since a lot of the noise comes from the engine, so took the fibre soundprofing off to start with:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fss335%2Fgarthfred%2FImage0412.jpg&hash=2181bca2ad24c6ea6807311aa9d5102c63eff760)
and put the first piece of sound deadening mat on:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fss335%2Fgarthfred%2FImage0413.jpg&hash=91f25e711803d73f1c9b9fe73d7ef68076835144)

I hope to make better progress at the weekend!!
Title: Re: Garth's GTI build thread
Post by: Garth on October 06, 2010, 07:35:52 pm
Sound deadening is going on quite well now I've completed the bonnet:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fss335%2Fgarthfred%2FImage0424.jpg&hash=8c0da0f22a61846c3c7f3da1ac4b1ef15cec68e1)
The original soundproofing is now back on as well.

The boot floor was cleaned and stripped of the original loose sound deadening mat (what little there was):
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fss335%2Fgarthfred%2FImage0414.jpg&hash=e24e3e5432ab1f9395bb2e9c65061815d466fce9)

Then I covered the wheel well:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fss335%2Fgarthfred%2FImage0423.jpg&hash=49db5e65c09c30ffa4329832999ee0308b01b2c8)

And finally finished the whole boot floor:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fss335%2Fgarthfred%2FImage0426.jpg&hash=933c440af24b3751ce6d81982426d6de9555b2e9)

First impressions are that it is doing a good job. The noise from the exhaust has gone and the engine is very slightly quieter. The rear end of the car is pretty quiet now with the front tyres producing half the noise and the engine the other half through the bulkhead. I've got shed loads of sound proofing so I'll be doing the doors next then the bulkhead and floor. After that I'll move on to the rear quarters and finally the roof. Should be pretty quiet when I finished

I've also been shopping and this arrived today:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fss335%2Fgarthfred%2FImage0429.jpg&hash=0516efdd374ba41dca2cc08442a501de1627cf15)
Just got to get them fitted now

I've got a few more big goodies coming but you'll have to wait for them  :happy2:

Dunno about fitting them. I've got to drive the following over the next few days: Manchester to Leeds to Newcastle to Leeds to Bournemouth to Leeds to Manchester to Leeds to Portsmouth and back to Leeds. That's going to be tough!
Hopefully they'll be fitted by next weekend though so you might just beat me  :happy2:

My springs are being fitted on Tuesday.

Posty brought me a couple of parcels today. One was a new pair of Bosch front Wipers which I have now fitted.  So much better than the cheapos I had before!

Parcel number 2 is this thing:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fgarthfred%2FR32_rear%2FSL272545.jpg&hash=405050ea9ae74d6541cf96101ff020348e99d61f)

I'm undecided about whether to fix it up and fit it or send it back though as the quality is rather poor  :sad1:

Sorry to hear Garth, that obviously wasn't what you wanted!

Is it an ebay jobby? I assume it's some sort of R32 bumper, surely that's a replica or was it listed as OEM/Gen?
I'd deffo be on the prowl for my money back on that one!  :fighting:

Springs might be Sunday if I'm lucky, if not next Sunday so we'll have to post up pics and compare! I'm buzzing  :jumpmove:

Yeah, it's an ebay job and I knew it wasn't genuine. It looked too good to be true as it was described as 'plug and play' and 'perfect fit'. To be honest if I can find the time, I could make it fit and it will still look good after some adjustments.

I'm going to do a trial fitting either tonight or tomorrow and depending on how that goes, I'll either keep it of send it back... fingers crossed!

My springs are being fitted tomorrow, so am I beating you to it?  :P

They'll be photos of a very dirty car I'm afraid!

I went away for the weekend in my other car and on Sat I had builders replacing some lintels. When I got back, the golf was covered (both sides and roof!) in cement splatter. I need to be careful when I wash it that I don't do more harm  :sad1:

How did fitting go with the bumper? There is a company that does these for an ok cost, away from ebay that is. I did a thread on it about 5/6 months ago, check it out - may be of use.

So when do we see pics of the drop'ness?  This will most definitely get my mouth watering as I've got the painful wait till Sunday!  :popcornsoda:

Well the car is still at the garage. They have had to order some new top mounts as it looks like the old ones are shot. This apparently is what the noise has been and nothing at all to do with the springs. VW just told me a bunch of porkies and the springs weren't broken at all. I'll be taking the original springs down to the VW dealer to let them show me exactly how 'broken' they are!

Oh and pics MAY follow tonight if I get the car back when it's still light  :happy2:

I haven't had time to look at the bumper yet, it's still sitting in the garage where it will no doubt remain until this weekend.
Cheers for the info pete  :drinking:

Sorry, things are pretty busy at the moment. I got the springs fitted then drove straight down to Portsmouth and back... Nice 550 mile test drive!

I can't believe how much the handling has changed, it's so much better. There's now very little wheelspin out of corners whereas before it used to scrabble about all over the place. The comfort is better on normal roads at normal speeds but flying down the motorway when the surace isn't great, you do bounce about slightly more than before. I'm very happy with them though

I haven't had time to wash the car or do anything with it since Tuesday (I have put another thousand miles on the clock though!) so this was taken out the window this morning:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fss335%2Fgarthfred%2FImage0439.jpg&hash=6a50b141b0f28d829f1cdddb559d64d65f49e654)

You'll have to wait til Sunday for a clean car and better photos  :happy2:

There always seems to be other things to do when I should be washing it! I'm going to try to clean it this week and take some more photos. I have been trial fitting the R32 replica bumper I bought and the fit was terrible, so it's going back  :sad1:

The bumper has now gone back and the standard one is back on.

This car is now FOR SALE!
I will give her a good clean, polish and wax this weekend then I can get some photos up of it looking at it's best.

The sale is due to the need for an auto... I nearly sold it before for the same reason, then changed my mind and decided to keep it, but my knee simply won't hold out much longer  :sad1:

I've seen a car I like, so I'll accept £7800 for a quick sale if anyone is interested.

I miss the golf but not the gear changing. I would love to have finished the car off properly with R32 brakes, colour coded and fully sound proofed, but I don't think any project car is really 'finished'. There's always something else to do!

I did promise my wife that I wouldn't modify the BMW, but true to form, I started within a week of buying it

I then set about sorting out the rear badge by removing the corroded part:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fss335%2Fgarthfred%2FSL271765.jpg&hash=bb6443108889ca844cc4b8a142c4da34d149bb37)
sanding down the handle and filling the small hole:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fss335%2Fgarthfred%2FSL271779.jpg&hash=b1c61a65d0eb5d02817cf6893d7d10e560792e74)
I then bought a mk4 rear badge (as you can't buy one to fit the original mk5 handle  ). I split this down to it's parts:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fss335%2Fgarthfred%2FSL271762.jpg&hash=cf3621de4e9f055bf13eac62a61f1d1b01b7c832)
I removed the complete handle assembly and sprayed it steel grey to match the car
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fss335%2Fgarthfred%2FSL271791.jpg&hash=00174626482389eda7923a58bd5eec1b1dd2c89e)
and then fixed the chrome part of the mk4 badge to it
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fss335%2Fgarthfred%2FSL271796.jpg&hash=9649b36387405da907850abb43d773acc5bed36a)
which then left me with this (this was before the dent was removed!):
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fss335%2Fgarthfred%2FSL271799.jpg&hash=b31f3a7530393babc0cb5fb608c3a8592aa4453d)

More to follow.....

[/quote]

hey garth, not sure if you'll remember or if you're even on here anymore as this thread was from ages ago but can you (or anyone else) remember how you attached the mk4 badge to the boot catch mechanism. i'm doing exactly the same as you did, bought myself a mk4 badge and stripped it down to the 3 parts. just wondered what you used to stick it on? glue, fixing pads, silicon?

What head unit are you using and have you had any issues with battery drain?

I keep finding ones with android auto then find out people are swapping wires etc to prevent battery drain

I then bought a mk4 rear badge (as you can't buy one to fit the original mk5 handle  ). I split this down to it's parts:

I removed the complete handle assembly and sprayed it steel grey to match the car

and then fixed the chrome part of the mk4 badge to it

which then left me with this (this was before the dent was removed!):
