Hi all,

Just bought myself a 2007 black MK5 golf gt tdi 170 with 60k miles on it. Wanted one ever since they came out and finally had the spare funds to buy one. Here's a rubbish iPhone photo as I've not had a chance to get a proper one.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs104%2Fbailachris%2FIMG_1558.jpg&hash=c2e712e84bdfc323fc4e0897cc0af2079ef93650)

I live in Shetland, I'm 28 and work night shifts as a social carer. Have been, and still am, a member on several car, bike and detailing forums.

I'm super into detailing, bikes, cars and music (play bass in a local band)

I've owned a few vag cars:

My first car was a 1997 bright green polo 1.0l known as the green bean:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs104%2Fbailachris%2F10-03-09_1413.jpg&hash=5d3d6a05b0981837538ff801552debe411682815)

Second car was a 1997 mk3 golf gti 2.0l 8v
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs104%2Fbailachris%2F10-06-10_2142.jpg&hash=05f5c75881c05854b2338c480dcea695a816e03b)

Followed by a 2004 Audi A4 2.0l sport:

Then unfortunately due to financial circumstances I had to sell the audi and bought myself a 2004 ford fiesta 1.4tdci 68bhp... I've had that for almost 4 years now as a cheap little run about and to be fair it's been cheap to run and insure and tax but is gutless and boring so time for a change!

Here's a pic of my bike too for anyone who's interested or made it reading this far! haha!
It's a 2002 Yamaha FZS600 fazer which I have modded quite a bit over the last 3 years of ownership.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs104%2Fbailachris%2FIMG_0598.jpg&hash=d2a846a4d44297d869c88e7b830dd9ce1026e487)

So, on with the project!

Cheers,

Chris

A little bit more detail on the car and my plans.

It was owned by a friend of a friend and has been well looked after, it's got a full service history and has very rarely had any advisories on an MOT. He took it to the garage and if there was anything as an advisory it was fixed straight away, no expense spared.

Paintwork has a few marks and is generally very swirly plus a few rust spots. My plan regarding that in the long term is to get a few bits repainted. However, the immediate plan is to give it a wet sand and polish detail to get it more to my standard.

I have several plans to mod little bits to start with. Nothing serious, led interior lights, gti front lights, r32 rear lights, metal gt seat adjustment inserts, rubber boot protector mat, LED number plate lights, stubby aerial, GT engraved metal door sill protectors plus a few other maintenance bits, new boot struts, pollen filter, air filter, oil and filter etc.

Longer term plans are r32 rear bumper, egr delete, maybe a remap but being the 170 it's got plenty grunt for now. New wheels, been looking at either 18" or 19" gloss black audi rotor style wheels. I'll do up the ones that are on it and the tyres will last for a while so will wait till they wear out and use them as winter wheels.. Coilovers, bigger brakes are also possible future purchases.

Cheers,

Chris

Unfortunately the first night that I owned the car I took it to work and when I went out in the morning then there was a large pool of coolant under it...

had a quick look, expansion tank nearly empty and from where the coolant was I figured it was a burst radiator.

I topped up the expansion tank with water and left the cap off so that the system wouldn't pressurise while driving to the nearest garage (about a mile away mostly down hill with no traffic so wasn't going to get hot enough to do any damage). Had lost about half the expansion tank again by the time I parked up at the garage. They confirmed it was the radiator that had burst so I ordered one from Tameside radiators £50 for new radiator and £20 postage which was great.

It arrived very quickly, well packaged and seemed to be really good quality:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs104%2Fbailachris%2FIMG_1577.jpg&hash=e4291fc8d10e84824532a831465739e821699e93)

Garage managed to get the car sorted today and all seems to be working as it should!  :jumpmove:

First thing I did when I got the car home, apart from check all the levels and that rad was all ok was to clean the inside of the windscreen and the front windows as they were all filthy, didn't have time to do anything else with it today but here is a picture of the cloth.... Keep in mind that it was brand new half an hour ago...

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs104%2Fbailachris%2FIMG_1603.jpg&hash=335ce5b6a54d95f1ab70548588148e666e9ce573)

Grim... Hopefully get some more updates over the next few days and weeks with the first few mods/cleaning!

Cheers,

Chris

Some nice little mods planned and good to hear it was just the radiator at fault
Title: Re: ChrisGT's Black 5 door GT TDI 170

Thanks maxitrol, hopefully get most of the little mods done quite quickly and with the weather improving then should get it at least a good wash and some protection or maybe have time to do the full wet sand detail.

Yeah, the radiator bursting put a bit of a downer on buying it but quickly got over that and it's just one of those things, can happen any time. All fixed now and running really well, so much more power than the fiesta so it's put a big grin on my face  <-- see

Forgot to say in the above post that it passed it's MOT the day I bought it and only advisory was slight play in anti roll bar drop link so have two new ones and will replace them soon.

Cheers,

Chris

WOW!! What did the problem turn out to be?

Was a blocked breather on the rocker cover in the end  of which  had been replaced but the new one was blocked building pressure up and chucking oil out by the quickest route which is the turbo.
At the time the head was sent away and pistons checked in fact at it was baffling the garage till they found the problem

Threatening to burn things usually gets the job done, or at least keeps you warm for a while.

Some new things have started to turn up, just like christmas!

New pollen filter, LED number plate lights and some new sheets of wet&dry sand paper in preparation for the big detail

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs104%2Fbailachris%2FIMG_1620_1.jpg&hash=2475d7a60427ba8444e75091cc721a2aa7ee0577)

Changed the pollen filter and wonder when it was done before

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs104%2Fbailachris%2FIMG_1621.jpg&hash=23762c644d643dc4186b3f3989eff91abcbfdc95)

Will hopefully get the bulbs changed over tonight or tomorrow,

Cheers,

Chris

Thanks very much.

Got them on Ebay for less than £5 and took 5 minutes to change them over.  They're quite wide so had to get them perfectly square to fit back into the housing but well worth it in my opinion. Here's a link to them:

Some more things arrived today for the golf. Archoil diesel and DPF cleaner, some more sand paper of different grits, some wire wheels for cleaning up some bits and pieces like brake calipers etc and a new stubby aerial (only ordered yesterday at 18:10 and arrived this afternoon at 14:30!!! Fastest I've ever received an item I've bought online, got it from car-masts-uk from their ebay shop, very impressed)

Horrible massive old aerial:

Nice new stubby aerial:

May replace it with a shark fin one at some point but this will do for now.

Had some time off and a gorgeous day here today so took the time to do a few bits on the golf.

First up was clean the exhaust tips as they were filthy! I used Tcut with a microfiber cloth to remove most of it then used 00 grade fine wire wool with Tcut to get off the stubborn stuff that was left. Then went over them with Mothers mag&Ali polish, wiped down with Gtechniq panel wipe and coated with Gtechniq C1 to make them super easy to keep clean. There's a bit of pitting on the surface but other than that they came up pretty good. Couple of before/during/after photos:

Replaced the old rusty boot struts. They looked terrible, only cost something like £12 for the new pair and took two minutes to change. Boot opens so easily now so the old ones were definitely not working right.

Some before and after pictures:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs104%2Fbailachris%2FIMG_1679.jpg&hash=74fd4a97fe9bf085d43af16044cd17611591b151)

Once I had changed them I removed the old garage sticker from the back window, it left the usual sticky edge so used a little Auto finesse obliTARate to remove it then gave the glass a clean:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs104%2Fbailachris%2FIMG_1693.jpg&hash=5b85fdedfc75d3c453c3a7244fed278cd2d42bec)

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs104%2Fbailachris%2FIMG_1694.jpg&hash=3bb610b288cbe448b8111f69efb97eede8e15afc)

Removed Tax disc holder, same procedure with tar/glue remover to remove the residue then cleaned the glass:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs104%2Fbailachris%2FIMG_1698.jpg&hash=39b3ab177f5221a087cc62d73fd03d25e3d10220)

Then thought the rear number plate was looking pretty bad so gave it a wipe over with the tar remover while I had a rag with some on and it came up pretty good too:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs104%2Fbailachris%2FIMG_1702.jpg&hash=bd8c07dea5e1eb271cb81764e305d2625c72ad68)

Boot liner was delivered today too, not sure I'm 100% happy with it fit wise but hopefully it'll settle out now it's not wrapped up in the packaging:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs104%2Fbailachris%2FIMG_1704.jpg&hash=ace660eb8fded3fd461692bc1da3305c960fc329)

Much better. Glad to get lots of little bits done today, hopefully get some more interesting updates soon =)

Cheers,

Chris

On the lookout for some genuine GTI headlights with the black inserts too. Not sure about the replica style ones on ebay if they'd be any good so think I'll hold out for some genuine ones. There were a pair for sale on here about a week ago but I didn't have enough posts to post on the thread or PM the seller and they're sold so will keep my eyes peeled.

Looks good mate, how did you do it? Did you buy smoked ones or DIY, hard to swap?

Liking the progress  :happy2:

Worth keeping an eye out for some xenons. This will transform the front end of the car.

Thanks very much to both of you  :happy2:

I bought smoked ones from ebay.

I followed the instructions in this video:

and it was fairly easy. One of the clips on the old indicator broke as I removed the top cover as you can see in the picture with the old and new ones side by side but not too bothered. Was going to keep them as spares so have kept the other one but just dumped the one with the broken clip.

Yeah, I'll keep a look out for the ones with black inserts as I think they'd look much nicer than the standard silver ones.

I don't really like the look of these ones:

Good work. I have the same boot liner and it doesn't take long to settle down. Tho I have now had to trim it down on one side to fit around my custom sub box.

Sorry it was me who bought the headlights. I'm changing back to them as I much prefer them to the Depo xenon reps.

Haha, no worries, I won't hold it against you  :drinking:

I'm sure more will come up again soon. Plenty replica ones on ebay but as I said not sure they'd be good enough quality/fit etc.

Yeah, boot liner seems to have settled out a bit now, at the end of the day it doesn't need to be perfect, just helps stop the boot getting filthy, so easy to remove, scrub with APC and a brush then hose off. Much easier then trying to get stuff out of the boot carpet.

Mine had replica GTI headlights fitted when I bought it, they weren't very good quality

The depo's are ok but I'm not keen on HID kits therefore reverting back to genuine GTI headlights and some good bulbs.

Plus I prefer the darker look of them  :happy2:

I also did the foot well lights and the light in the boot but didn't bother getting pictures of them. Much nicer with the white light. Was tempted by the blue tint ones but pleased that I stuck with the white.

Really pleased with them, only took a few minutes to change them and they're great. So had a check to see if the injector recall had been done to my car by any of the previous owners.

First thing to check the service book and nothing in there and then checked the boot of the car for the 23H9 campaign sticker, nothing there.

Phoned VW UK customer services and the very helpful lady called Laura went through all the records that she had for the car including VW dealer services the car has had etc. She said that she had a record of the car having had warranty work done in 2012 (which was around the time of the injector campaign) and also told me that there were no campaigns outstanding for the car. She then registered me on their system as the owner for any further correspondence and gave me the number for the garage where the car had gone for some work so that I could phone them to find out if they had any more information.

Very pleased with the service from Laura at VWUK CS and hopefully if I have to phone them again about anything then it'll be just as good

Next thing was to phone the garage she had given me the number for - there was a note in the service log for 2008 of the car having had a complete new engine fitted and I wanted to know more - Amazingly the garage still had a record of this and said that it had been replaced due to a leaking engine block. The lady there also said that they had on their records of warranty work having been done to the car in 2012 but had no further info on that.

Considering there are no VW garages in Shetland and that I would have to take the car on an overnight boat trip to Aberdeen at a cost of a few hundred quid to get it physically checked I'm happy enough to assume that because there are no outstanding warranty campaigns and that they have a record of warranty work being carried out in 2012 that the injectors and loom etc have been changed and can now forget about that.

Next plans!!

I would like to blank off the egr. I am planning on just putting in a blanking plate between the egr pipe and the inlet, rather than removing the egr and pipe and cooler (which is a bit harder to get to on the BMN engine apparently), therefore keeping the engine looking stock as well. I would then get the egr mapped out (more on this in a minute).

I haven't taken any of the inlet pipes/manifold apart yet so have no idea how gungy and blocked up it is in there but have been reading about replacing the plastic manifold with the alloy manifold from the BKD (140) engine. I see that darkside developments have a kit for this: http://www.darksidedevelopments.co.uk/products/ppd170-used-bkd-aluminium-inlet-manifold-conversion-kit.html
The reason being that it gets rid of the inlet flaps and the plastic manifold which is fitted to the BMN (170) engine. I am thinking that rather than trying to clean what's on the car already I might as well replace the inlet manifold at the same time as blanking off the egr and getting it remapped.

So, to the remap. There is a rep up here in Shetland for Celtic tuning who has very good reports from several people. I contacted him and spoke for a little while about the options and he was very helpful. I enquired at first just about getting the egr mapped out which he said would cost £200. He said that if I went for a stage one remap as well as the egr delete then he would charge £250. I really wasn't looking for more power than the standard 170ish as that is more than I've had in any car before and is more than enough for the roads/my driving style etc. However if I am to go ahead with the egr delete map it would be rude not to pay only an extra £50 and get it unleashed a bit more.

Celtic tuning claims that their stage one map will take the car to just over 210bhp and just over 300lb/ft which sounds pretty good and not going to be putting too much more stress on the original parts (turbo, clutch etc). There are no rolling roads to test the car before or after on up here. Like I said I'm not that bothered about getting every last drop of power out of it so even if it's only going to get me a bit extra and smooth it out more then I'd be happy with that. https://www.celtictuning.co.uk/component/ctvc/volkswagen/golf-mk5-1k-2004-2008/diesel/2-0-tdi-pd-167-bhp-2004-2008/stage-1?year=2007#t3-content

I have heard horror stories of pretty much everything written above... celtic tuning (like most tuning companies I might add) have some bad reviews albeit mostly not recent reviews. I have read that removing the egr can in fact have a negative impact on the dpf... I have also read of people who have said that having had their car remapped had a negative effect on their dpf and that it did a lot more regens than before it was remapped. Removing the dpf is now illegal as far as the MOT is concerned and I am not wanting to remove it. Yes, you can open it up, gut it and weld it up so that it looks stock but I'm not interested in going down that road.

When I asked the celtic tuning guy about the dpf issue he assured me that their maps are made to run as clean as possible to keep emissions good and to stop their being trouble with dpf's etc. He followed this up with "lots of black reek out the exhaust isn't a good advert for the company" which is of course right. haha.

I hope at least a couple of you have managed to read this far and might offer some advice on the subject.

Thanks,

Chris

It's amazing how the little changes really make the car so much nicer. Going to do a full service oils filters etc in the next couple of weeks when I have some free time to do it.

I'm still trying to decide if I should get the alloy inlet manifold to replace the plastic one, because I want to do that before I get it mapped etc... Not a huge amount of info on the subject on the forum but have searched a bit on a few other forums and seems to be a good mod. Trying to decide if I should buy it from darkside or source the bits myself and clean them up as it'll probably be cheaper that way.

Pretty much decided for sure that I'm getting the stage one remap when I get the egr done and I'm definitely going to get rid of the egr sometime soon... Like I said just need to decide if I replace the inlet manifold too...

Decisions decisions!! haha

Thanks for looking and the kind words  :happy2:

P.S. that is about half my detailing stuff... I have a problem... hahaha

Spoke to Rob at darkside developments today, he replied very quickly and was very helpful.

I decided to order the inlet manifold kit from them for a few reasons:
1) it comes with everything I'll need - a manifold I know is correct plus gaskets etc
2) it has been properly cleaned so can just go straight on.
3) I don't think it's going to have cost me much more than having sourced all the parts myself plus postage to where I live and then cleaning products etc.

I asked Rob if they did a discount for forum members and he said they didn't but very generously agreed to give me the egr delete plate and gasket FOC  :happy2:

I was feeling a bit devil may care having just got home from nightshift and cheekily asked if he'd put in a tshirt too but he said he'd only put in the free tshirt if I paid for the EGR plate and gasket. I wasn't really needing the tshirt so went with his original offer. Was maybe a bit cheeky of me but you don't get if you don't ask.

Anyway, hopefully that'll be here in the next few days and can get new manifold on, egr blanked off and then get it in for egr delete/remap.

Having been reading quite a few older threads over the last few nights then I'm thinking I may invest in a vibra technics sub frame mount. I do get a bit of backlash from the engine when driving it harder so will look into this. Going to get the car over a friends pit soon and just give everything a good check over. Will check the other engine mounts too but the subframe/dogbone seems to be the one recommended to upgrade first (would possibly upgrade the subframe one to the vibra technics one and just replace the others with standard ones if they're knackered..).
Will also replace the subframe bolts and washers while I'm at it if I decide to change it.

Currently just accumulating all the bits and pieces necessary for a good service (engine oil and filter, fuel filter, air filter, will check other fluids too.. it's already just had new coolant because of the radiator bursting and I replaced the pollen filter when I got the car.) which I should hopefully get sorted this week. Want to get it all serviced before I get the remap done to make sure it's all running as well as it can first.

I've never had any issues with mine but I did look into the dog bone bush upgrade. Are you looking at changing the bush itself or fitting the insert? From what I found out when reading up on them is they can transfer quite a bit more vibration into the cabin. I have never run one so cannot coment on how much mind.

Nice look car though mate with some tasteful mods. Out of interest, I see that Darkside supplied you with a cast Alu manifold. Is yours cast at the minute? Mine is plastic.

@Matto (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=4512) - thanks, much appreciated  :drinking:

I was planning on the replacement part: http://www.darksidedevelopments.co.uk/productimage.php?product_id=331&current_image=4

There might be a slight increase in vibes from this mount although from what I've read on the product reviews threads then the subframe mount alone doesn't really cause much more but fitting the other stiffer engine mounts as well will increase this a lot more (None of the threads I read were anyone who had a diesel so can only imagine vibes would be worse). That's why I thought I'd change the subframe mount for the stiffer one and the others for standard mounts and hopefully therefore get some reduced engine movement without too many vibes. I definitely have more engine movement than I think there should be so going to check all mounts and make a decision at that time.

The engine manifold in my car is plastic yes. The kit they have sent me is an alloy one from the BKD engine which is apparently quite a good mod done by a few 170 owners. it is pretty much a straight swap and removes the swirl flaps which the 170BMN had but the 140BKD didn't. The seal at the actuator end of the plastic manifold can fail (which mine is showing signs of) the swirl flaps also get chocked up with soot and rubbish that comes in through the egr and can stick a bit, making them useless at best or restricting air flow at worst. Some of the very first 170BMN engines came with an alloy manifold with swirl flaps but these are damn near impossible to find. more info in paragraph two of post #38.

Thanks for looking and commenting, I started reading your build thread last night and got to page 5 so will finish reading that today, really like the ed30 front splitter and the colour of yours is awesome! It's the one thing that almost put me off this car is that it's black... Looks great when it's cleaned up but gets dirty and looks terrible so quickly!

Went to replace the air filter a few days ago and was met by these screws holding the air box together:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs104%2Fbailachris%2FIMG_1812.jpg&hash=9410eb9129e1b5fbd6a1181511e0974214e49390)

Went to look about online for new screws... couldn't find any... Nipped along to local car parts place and was told they couldn't get screws for it and couldn't just replace the lid of the airbox had to buy the whole airbox... for over £100... no thanks.

A friend managed to find a part number for skoda airbox screws that looked exactly the same as one that I had managed to remove.

The part number was listed as the right screw for the airbox on almost every vw, seat, skoda and audi apart from my car...

My friend was near a vw dealer in Edinburgh and went along to check if it was on their system and they too had the same part number for the screws but said that there wasn't any listed for my car or any GT models... bought some anyway and they are a perfect fit, identical to the ones I removed so replaced all the airbox screws for about £12 instead of buying a seond hand air box off ebay or a brand new one...

The part number is WHT 002 087 in case anyone else needs new screws for their airbox  :happy2:

So, new K&N panel filter in today too

from what I've read this is an indication of oil in the fuel which is caused by the failure of the oil seal in the tandem fuel pump.

The car sometimes just cranks first thing in the morning and doesn't fire up very quickly unless you turn off the ignition and turn it on again then starts perfectly. The car does smoke a bit and can be quite dark smoke which would indicate oil being burned.

The car has burned about a litre of oil in the last 1300 miles which is more than I think it should be although I know these engines are supposed to burn a bit of oil so that you top it up and therefore keep the oil cleaner for longer and that's supposed to help with the long life servicing.

A new tandem pump from Darkside developments is £310... one from a vw dealer on ebay is £235... or a used one is about £50. I'd rather go for a genuine one though.

Edit: having looked around I have found a seal kit to rebuild the tandem pump with for £35: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/171851464956?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

One thing to note is that with the tank of fuel, which has about 60 miles left in it, I put in Archoil DPF cleaner which may be the cause of the discoloured fuel however with the other things I have noted above I believe it is more likely the tandem pump. It's probably the original and the car is 61k now.

Can anyone confirm from the pictures that it's oil contamination??

Cheers,

Chris

The car seems to be running really good and feels up on power a bit with the new fuel and air filter.

Have ordered the seal kit for the tandem pump so will get that changed as soon as I can and then run a couple of tanks of fuel through and then check the fuel filter again and see if that clears up the black fuel issue. If I take the tandem pump apart and it's obviously completely knackered and not just the seals that have gone then I can always buy a new pump but figure this way I could save myself £200 by just changing the seals instead of the whole pump.

Tandem fuel pump seal kit arrived today so will hopefully get that changed over in the next couple of weeks and then run a couple of tanks of fuel through the car and if it's still contaminated then will replace the injector seals.

Also got a little thing of touch up paint as there are a couple of bad stone chips on the bonnet and a scratch on the rear driver side wing.

My friend Matt came over today and we got the tandem pump seals changed. The oil seal for the shaft inside the pump was definitely not creating a good seal and pretty much fell apart so will run a few tanks of fuel through the car and see how the fuel in the fuel filter canister looks after that, if it's clearer then I'll change the filter again and if it's still black then I'll change the injector seals. Got a couple of pictures but really not much interesting to see and didn't really get any pics of the pump when disassembled.

While taking the pump off then we noticed a coolant pipe that was very perished and it started leaking as soon as it was moved very slightly to get access to the pump bolts. So, replaced with a new piece of pipe and topped up the coolant, good as new. Not sure why the garage that replaced the radiator didn't even notice/replce/mention about this pipe but it's changed now anyway.

Here's the old coolant pipe.. the outer part just fell apart as we removed it.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs104%2Fbailachris%2FIMG_1839.jpg&hash=a7c18df4f91f05aad2a876a191d57393c4ad620a)

So replaced it and topped up the coolant again. The tandem pump is off in this pic which is why there is a fuel pipe not connected to anything.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs104%2Fbailachris%2FIMG_1896.jpg&hash=566441c0db47a5007502cc5d6a8b6cda59296fa4)

None of the pictures of the tandem pump really came out right and didn't get many of the inside of it but will put a couple below. The car seems to be running great, still a little smokey but the fuel will still be contaminated. There wasn't much fuel left in the car so topped it right up last night and will run another tank or two through it and then check for oil contamination again.

This is one once we'd removed the tandem pump:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs104%2Fbailachris%2FIMG_1895.jpg&hash=0105468ca9d167a453cf8bb02833e4c0f800ce1b)

Removing the bolts to separate the pump:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs104%2Fbailachris%2FIMG_1897.jpg&hash=cd5dcc6af18724c34ed7055fe4298b523f44f408)

Really not a great picture but it's really the only one with the pump apart.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs104%2Fbailachris%2FIMG_1898.jpg&hash=45f22d59f058b6d9d87d9d8bab8e8834197e0785)

Your repair reports will be helpful to others especially, the tandem pump repair kit,I've done a couple and found it has cured the fuel filter issue.
However, it will not cure your oil consumption and I suggest you monitor that if no oil leaks are visible.

Thank you doylebros :drinking:

I'm very pleased to hear that you've had positive results from doing the seal change before, how many tanks of fuel did it take for the fuel to clear up? I'm planning on checking it after I've run two or three full tanks through it. I'm pleased with how the job went and for the price of £35 for the seals instead of at least £240 for a new pump plus doing the job myself instead of getting a garage to do it then hopefully saved myself a few hundred quid at the end of the day.

I will be keeping a very close eye on the oil consumption and am hoping to get the car over a friends pit soon so that I can give it a really good check over from underneath too. I'm hoping that the oil it has been burning is normal other than what was being leaked into the fuel system but will keep an eye on it. There aren't any obvious leaks that I can see so hopefully nothing sinister :happy2:

I've just used a 1000 miles as the recall to inspect/check for how the filter contamination has progressed so your two or three tanks of fuel will be a good shout.

Let's see how your inspection of the engine bay goes but I would of expected you to of spotted any obvious oil leaks when doing your inlet manifold change out.

I've not changed over the inlet manifold yet as I wanted to sort this problem before I modified anything else.

and the outer pieces, need to do this bit again though as not happy with it.

I gave them a rinse with water then a once over with a detailing brush and some Meguiar's APC, then went over them with an old tooth brush and auto finesse obliTARate then another once over with APC and then a rinse. Pleased with it for a quick 2 minute job. There's a few black marks on the silver inner part but it's just where the outer part has rubbed on it and worn through the silver paint.

Thinking I might paint them at some point. Might paint the silver inner part red and the TDI and VW logo on it black and leave the outer part black. Will see what happens though.

Done some longer runs in the car and mpg looking pretty good

Couple more bits arrived for the golf today so hopefully get them changed soon.

Subframe bolts and spacers as there is a bit of knock from it and a short shifter (don't really need it but that's the danger of shopping when tired and bored on night shift... )

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs104%2Fbailachris%2FIMG_1954.jpg&hash=c754665970c7272855e7418f174d928c34af2f4d)

Hopefully the rain will stop soon and I'll be able to finally check my fuel filter and see if the tandem seals have cured my fuel contamination problem. Hate to jinx it but the car is smoking a lot less and not used any oil since I changed the seals. Will get some pics up when I get a chance to check it.

Had a quick break in the rain so opened up the fuel filter canister and could see the filter straight away (the first time I had to syphon out quite a bit of fuel before I could see the filter).

The Fuel is much clearer although still quite cloudy and dark so didn't look that different in the couple of pictures I managed to get. Going to run a few more tanks of fuel through and then check it again and once it's cleared up more then I'll change the filter again. It was very contaminated to start with so going to take a while to get it all out of the system but feeling pretty good that it's improving  :jumpmove:

You'll be pleased with that then - give it another 1000 miles and change the filter again and you'll see a great improvement on the following inspection.

Got a couple of little things done on the golf this evening.

Replaced the bolt that holds the windscreen washer fluid filler tube. It's the first thing I noticed when I opened the bonnet for the first time and has driven me nuts ever since. officially It's an M6 x16 bolt although it does stick out the back of the bracket a bit so could be a few mm shorter. I used a stainless steel flange hex head bolt which is fine although not quite as big as the washer on the original it makes no odds as there is no weight on it so it's supported enough. Also had a quick clean around the area too.

I also bought some new number plates as the old ones looked a bit scabby and I don't like the border on them. I think it looks much neater without them, it's not easy to see in the pictures but the border is dark green and just looks out of place. The old front plate had partly come off at one side as the sticky pads had given up so put quite a few extra on the new plate to make sure it stays stuck on.

New plates:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs104%2Fbailachris%2FIMG_1982.jpg&hash=0eeddecb4ac93ca5b7d072be28ce879a3aa6a34c)

Lots of sticky pads!

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs104%2Fbailachris%2FIMG_1983.jpg&hash=dee5f1e32e10d30192f04d10bf3c7690d8644181)

Old plate, hanging off at left side:

Old plate removed and new plate ready to go on:

What was left of the old sticky pads:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs104%2Fbailachris%2FIMG_1987.jpg&hash=0908af7c7ca8a565d28016c6ff40b8237da6457f)

I used Autofinesse obliTARate to remove what was left and then used Meguiar's APC to clean the area, followed by Gtechniq panel wipe to make sure the surface was as clean as possible to ensure a good bond with the new sticky pads, which left me with this:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs104%2Fbailachris%2FIMG_1988.jpg&hash=505876757b4057fc415b5e8f3add1b966a7e28b2)

The engine cover had never sat right as a couple of the little rubber mounts that hold it in place were missing and a couple were torn so weren't really doing anything. Managed to find a set of 6 brand new ones on ebay for a few quid and fitted them today, much more secure now and sits where it's meant to.

Here's a link if anyone else is needing some: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/172234373141?_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

Had a really productive day on the golf today and got a few jobs done. Before I go further I must give a massive thanks to my friend Matt who's help meant I could actually get this job done.  :drinking:

So today I gave the car an oil + filter change, changed the inlet manifold to the alloy one from the pd140, cleaned out my egr valve/ASV and also blanked off my EGR. Here are some pics of the day along with a few little descriptions of what's happening in each picture. I wanted to write this post of my experience for anyone else considering changing the BMN pd170 inlet manifold (with swirl flaps) for the BKD pd 140 inlet manifold (no swirl flaps) as there isn't really that much info on doing this job.

So first off this is how the car started today. The car was a little lumpy at idle although nothing too bad but just hesitated slightly and shuddered a little.

We started by jacking up the car, removing the belly pan and dropping out the oil, we left it to drip out as we did the rest of the work on the car and filled it up once we'd finished all the other jobs, I didn't take any pictures as you all know what an oil change looks like.

In this picture then I have already removed one of the engine cover brackets, taken the bolts out of the egr pipe connecting it to the egr valve and moved a few electrical connections and pipes out of the way. By far one of the most awkward parts of the whole day was trying to get the one bolt that holds the egr pipe to the engine block as it's super hard to get to/see. This had to be removed though so that there was enough give (and only just enough give!!) to get to the bolt connecting the egr valve to the inlet manifold which is obscured by the egr pipe. Said awkward bolt is not pictured but if you follow the egr pipe from the valve down to the engine block you will find it tucked away under the inlet manifold and half obscured by coolant pipes...  :stupid: Access for tools was slightly improved by removing some of the air intake.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs104%2Fbailachris%2FIMG_2010.jpg&hash=50b5c59945ad08fcfc1a1c97effb20a1432095f7)

The three torx bolts that hold the egr valve/asv to the inlet manifold were awkward but manageable using different combinations of extension bars etc, the one obscured by the egr pipe was the most time consuming and required two people, one to hold the egr pipe out the way, leaving the other person two hands to get the torx bit into the bolt and undo it. This was made harder on my car because someone had knackered the head on that torx bit...  :slap:

Once the egr valve/asv was off we were met with this lovely gungy mess:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs104%2Fbailachris%2FIMG_2012.jpg&hash=a1d3adb5b0f3541b3b83526680091abcd176bb1e)

For anyone who has been reading my thread then you'll know I have only recently sorted a problem with the tandem pump leaking oil into the fuel system meaning the car was burning a lot of oil, I guess this accounts for some of the gunky mess but this is the main reason I wanted to block off the egr, this horrible exhaust crap should not be going back through the engine...

Anyway, all cleaned up using a flat bladed screw driver and various brake/carb cleaners etc it came up like this:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs104%2Fbailachris%2FIMG_2023.jpg&hash=adbe32cf940a58584fa595b4a0e3a10d31720fb3)

Not perfect but a lot better than it was.

Here's just some of the stuff that came out of it:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs104%2Fbailachris%2FIMG_2025.jpg&hash=94f7fcf243b09059758211e973f5066d2b9103ad)

With the egr valve removed it gave us access to the rest of the bolts securing the inlet manifold to the engine block.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs104%2Fbailachris%2FIMG_2013.jpg&hash=d4b7207fe3c56765111a76582f388ab572be4f79)

It took quite a while to clean out the inlet on the inlet manifold to find the bolt hidden inside the manifold itself... stupidest place for a bolt ever... A couple of the other bolts were awkward to get to but a bit of patience and trying various combinations of tools/extensions they all came out leaving is this:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs104%2Fbailachris%2FIMG_2014.jpg&hash=121695104ccb4d45e1d8e08aba0065bb81d4221d)

This is the inside of the old inlet manifold, you can see it's all gunged up like the egr/asv:

In the picture you can see the swirl flap on the left is all covered in stuff stopping it from working properly, there was slight play in the shaft that holds the flaps and runs right from one end of the manifold to the other which suggests it was definitely not working as it should.

This picture shows the swirl flap actuator which has been leaking pressure out of the inlet manifold. You can tell because the horrible gunky residue has been blown out of the intake seal and covered that side of the manifold and engine cover bracket.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs104%2Fbailachris%2FIMG_2017.jpg&hash=624d324a8b23a12981a27b54a82d34ad6f22366a)

So, fitting the new manifold. The kit I got from darkside developments comes with a used but aqua blasted pd140 intake manifold, a metal gasket (not rubber like the pd170) and also 5 new bolts with washers which are used for the bottom row of intake manifold bolts as the ones from the pd170 manifold are slightly too long.

Here's a link to the kit I bought which costs £95 rather than a new plastic pd170 manifold with swirl flaps which will set you back at least £360 (I have seen them advertised for over £500 though...): http://www.darksidedevelopments.co.uk/products/ppd170-used-bkd-aluminium-inlet-manifold-conversion-kit.html

So, it is also worth noting that the bolt which sits inside the intake manifold (the one that was hard to find under all the gunge) had a slight shoulder on it which needed to be ground away in order for it to sit inside the hole in the alloy manifold. We did this by wrapping some insulating tape around the thread of the bolt and putting in a drill, then used the drill to spin the bolt on a file to grind down the edge neatly and evenly. Worked pretty well.

So here's the new manifold in place:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs104%2Fbailachris%2FIMG_2020.jpg&hash=0a0bc1c8c4974b8815334f688426ba6d90ad6881)

Now the fun really begins...

Once the manifold was in place and a few of the bolts put in then we had to start modifying some of the other parts to get them to sit right as the alloy manifold has a slightly different outer profile in some places. This meant that the brackets which hold the engine cover some clips for pipes and electrical connectors and also the swirl flap actuator had to be adapted to fit.

First the left hand side, which holds the swirl flap actuator. This bracket had to be modified the most. We cut off the leg that went down to the bottom bolt as it was nowhere near the bottom bolt now. What we figured was that now the swirl flap actuator had been got rid of all that bracket was doing now was holding that corner of the engine cover and has one electrical sensor attached to it so it really didn't need much bracing. It is also connect by a bolt to the oil level dipstick which is fairly stiff so helps support the bracket as much as the bracket supports it. So, the lower leg was removed. The top part where the other bolt goes into the top row of intake bolts had to be modified like this in order to sit where it was before:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs104%2Fbailachris%2FIMG_2026.jpg&hash=184cb84242b454a533d38674d6369434b7153f74)

We used a hacksaw and a file to modify it and it worked ok.

Now, the bracket on the other side required quite a bit more work although less was actually removed. In the next picture you can see where we had to cut out two V shapes so that the bracket didn't foul on the manifold casing:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs104%2Fbailachris%2FIMG_2028.jpg&hash=cc9ced0a20e5ead98aec9319a2970769749b9eeb)

I am happy to report that the brackets both support the engine cover as they did before.

Once the brackets were modified and the bolts all in securing the new manifold to the engine block then we refitted the now cleaned egr valve/asv and connected all the various wires/pipes etc from where they were before.

I took this chance to block off the egr pipe while I had it apart and it was all clean, I used a blanking plate I got from Darkside developments. The reason I wanted to blank it off here but keep the pipe etc is so that it still looks roughly stock to anyone having a look. The blank is pretty chunky so was a bit of a fight to get the pipe to line up correctly with the bolt holes, partly as the new manifold sets the pipe off very slightly, Anyway, the original two bolts that hold the egr pipe to the egr valve were too short so I used two of the old intake manifold bolts that had been on the bottom row and had been replaced. I had to cut them down slightly as they were too long but they worked perfectly and made sure there was plenty of the bolt holding it all together. The horrible awkward bolt that holds the egr pipe to the engine casing was now quite a bit out of position so that was left out. Honestly though the pipe isn't going anywhere and is completely solid where it is.

The last thing to do was to block off the vacuum pipe that operated the swirl flap actuator. I did this by bending it back on itself and tightening a cable tie around it. Ideally I'll get something to put in the pipe to block it properly but to be honest it's not leaking the way it is so not too worried.

Here are a couple of picture s of the finished job:

egr pipe with blanking plate:

 (https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs104%2Fbailachris%2FIMG_2032.jpg&hash=8ad3c635a32304387374e73f87a6cc5271042c45)

Modified left bracket with vacuum pipe blocked off (although I hadn't clipped it back onto the bracket in this picture):

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs104%2Fbailachris%2FIMG_2034.jpg&hash=4793128fede2a9059c3ffa8652e54c1d5a5c1710)

Right side bracket which holds a couple of coolant pipes and fuel pipes in place as well as supporting the engine cover:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs104%2Fbailachris%2FIMG_2035.jpg&hash=ce2b33683898ade6881763d3f3161a56d5d87d25)

The car blew out quite a bit of white smoke for the first couple of miles but it cleared up pretty quickly, I'm guessing it was just from disturbing the gunk that was in there and letting it burn through a bit. It idles much better and feels like it pulls a lot better lower down the rev range, the engine management light came on after about 20 miles but that was expected due to the egr being blocked off and it's getting mapped out soon so not worried about that.

Thanks for reading if you got this far and hope some of the information might be handy to anyone else thinking of this mod.

Cheers,

Chris

Edit May 2017: I have just done another oil and filter change and having the alloy inlet manifold compared to the standard plastic one does make getting the old filter out a little more tricky as it sits closer to the cap for the oil filter. What we had to do was unscrew the oil filter cap and then separate the filter from the cap before it could be removed from the canister, awkward but manageable. I would also note that the bolts supplied by darkside developments for fitting the manifold have all rusted quite badly compared to the original bolts. Overall I'm still happy enough with the kit and it's still been cheaper than replacing the plastic manifold but just want people to know what's really involved as it's not quite as straight forward as unbolting the old one and bolting the alloy one on.

Thanks Maxitrol, much appreciated.

I wanted to let people know what's really involved with this as it's hard to find much info on it. Took us about 4 and a half hours from meeting at his garage to driving away again. We both had a lot of different tools with us too and think we tried every combination of extension bars/bits to get to some of the bolts. haha. A lot of the time was spent modifying the brackets to fit the new manifold.

Car blew out a bit more white smoke this morning but cleared up after about 2 minutes of driving. Can't wait to the remap done now!

Also in the process of buying some new wheels and have been exploring the options for upgrading the stereo. Nothing fancy but think I'm going to go for an rcd510 with Aux/usb in down by the gearstick.

After getting all that work done yesterday it gave me the itch to get more done, so today I had some spare time I decided to fit my short shifter.

I bought the OEM S3/Golf R short shifter from darkside developments for £30. Here's the link to the part: http://www.darksidedevelopments.co.uk/products/genuine-02q-6-speed-gearbox-short-shift-kit.html

I bought this after I had just come off nightshift and was feeling a little devil may care. It's never a good idea to spend money when you're tired... just like you should never go food shopping when hungry. Anyway, It's a mod that half of me thinks is completely awesome and the other (possibly more sensible) half of me thinks is completely pointless.

Does it increase performance... no. My quick gear changes might be the smallest fraction of a second quicker but It is very rare that I try and change gear super quickly as I was brought up to have mechanical sympathy. In order to be fast you have to smooth etc, so jamming gears in as fast as possible and dumping the clutch just has no appeal to me. So if it's not performance it must be cosmetic... well, no again as no one can see the nice new shiny linkage... So any real benefits? Well, there is less throw on the gear stick which feels really nice and other than that then not as far as I can see.

Was the mod worth the £30 I spent... Honestly, no. The throw on the standard golf gear stick really isn't that bad but then I'm coming from a ford fiesta which had a throw measured in meters not cm.

The money aside and the boy racer who claims he can change gear faster than his friends down the pub as far aside as possible, I do like the mod. It feels tight and sharp and I had fun working on my car in the sunshine

So, I know you just came her for pictures so here you go.

I followed this guide on how to do the job, Colin might come across a little simple but he does give good clear instructions

I removed the engine cover, air intake and filter housing to give me access to the shifter. As in the video above some people remove the battery box, however I had plenty access with that all left in place.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs104%2Fbailachris%2FIMG_2040.jpg&hash=2147be9e6d4d253bc95a296469ae2c6983c570a3)

You can see in the top left of the picture one of my Bergen hose clip pliers/clamps. They are brilliant and make removing spring clips super easy, I got my set on ebay. Here's the set which includes a super long reach one which is super handy for stuff down the back of the engine or places where there is no room for the actual pliers to be used:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs104%2Fbailachris%2FIMG_2045.jpg&hash=a58829b98e0e67344fc8a1ef456bdc50f983ef6e)

Anyway, I followed the video and removed the two little securing clips and then the one bolt that secures the linkage. I made sure the gearbox was in neutral and then, as in the video, push down slowly and then pull up on the linkage sharply to break it free, took a couple of tries and it popped off no bother.

Old and new:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs104%2Fbailachris%2FIMG_2042.jpg&hash=9f43de5214130a26089bb4482354fd3603753428)

And new one in place with bolt and clips back on:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs104%2Fbailachris%2FIMG_2044.jpg&hash=cc27ff67e721f80a2c667e17df493c55bae8eb84)

I put some grease on the parts that move and in the runner on the right hand side where the other part of the linkage slots in.

All put back together and a quick wipe down:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs104%2Fbailachris%2FIMG_2048.jpg&hash=12188f0a785f24886be88bbed17538935cb470c3)

Going to try and do something with that sound deadening stuff at the bulkhead as it's all falling down...

Kind of hard to get an accurate picture but here is the car in 4th gear before the mod:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs104%2Fbailachris%2FIMG_2038.jpg&hash=eebde82ef78fdb8502ae40e8770a1d08aff1918b)

and here it is after:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs104%2Fbailachris%2FIMG_2047.jpg&hash=46c1b23372da67665da65602d5ac76d96a1cef9d)

angle of the picture isn't exactly the same so makes it look like there's been more difference than there actually has.

As I said, nice to do some work on the car, mod probably not worth the £30 but it's done now and it does feel better than standard.

Woohoo! New wheels have arrived!  :jumpmove:

Big thanks to @john87 (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=4246)  for the smooth transaction and honest description of them. Got to love the forum when people use it properly  :drinking:

Going to give them a polish and then seal them with either Gtechniq C1 or Crystal Serum lite as I have both but not sure I have enough CSL left to do all four wheels... Will see what happens. Then will top them off with Exov2 to keep them super easy to keep clean.

Bought myself a VCDS kit, it's second hand from someone local but it's like new. There are a few things I'd like to change like changing the locks so that one click of the button opens all the doors rather than just the drivers door etc. I also wanted to be able to scan for faults myself as I plan on doing most of the work to the car myself.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs104%2Fbailachris%2FIMG_2147.jpg&hash=7966d05b591b1a7d91d59946b6f134716faa26b2)

So if anyone in Shetland needs a scan then give me a shout  :happy2:

Gave the car a quick auto scan and it threw up 5 codes.

the egr one I knew about as it has been blanked off but not mapped out yet.

The abs and esp lights have been coming on intermittently lately while driving but always go off as soon as the car is switched off and switched on again. The scan suggests it's a wheel speed sensor at the rear left. I believe from research on the forum and other forums that the wheel bearing can be the culprit for this error so will get that checked out soon enough. Not too worried about it though.

The other codes I'll look into as I didn't know about them. The drivers window works perfectly though as does the intermittent wipe of the wipers.

Here are the modules which threw up codes.

The other day the heater started only working when on setting four... so it was either off or on full blast... Funny but not useful.

I had a similar problem a few years ago with my mk3 golf and it was the resistor pack that stopped working, I figured it was a similar problem. Google and searching the forum confirmed it, so I bought a new resistor pack for about £12 off ebay.

This is the new one which arrived super quick as I only ordered it on Monday evening and arrived today (wednesday) lunch time.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs104%2Fbailachris%2FIMG_2150.jpg&hash=e466f5101f79dafc6f237850b5f334ce84106322)

Was really easy to replace, just drop the foam out from under/behind the glove box and then it's right there, pulled out the old one and put in the new one, plugged it back in and all working perfectly again  :happy2:

Here's the two side by side:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs104%2Fbailachris%2FIMG_2151.jpg&hash=be398cb5688a75e98b03898702f476a29d8723f2)

Guess it'll be the original one. Have heard that sometimes the motor is starting to fail which causes the resistor pack to fail so will keep an eye on that. If the resistor pack fails again then I'll replace the motor too.

Been getting quite a bit of noise from the clutch release bearing lately.

If the gearbox is coming off to replace that I figured I might as well replace the clutch friction plate and dmf so ordered the full sachs kit and it arrived yesterday. Just need to get it booked into the garage to get it done. Not a job I'm confident enough to do myself.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs104%2Fbailachris%2FIMG_2192.jpg&hash=276dfc066721f0bf9cf6ef409ecf39d6cd4c0a62)

Got my new wheels all polished up and sealed with Gtechniq C5 and EXOv2 so just need to get them balanced and then can fit them.

Finally got around to fitting my new wheels today.

I bought them form a forum member a while ago and they were in good condition having been refurbished/powder coated not too long ago.

I gave them a good freshen up though with the following process:

Removed all old wheel weights,
Washed with bilberry wheel cleaner and various brushes,
Sprayed with ironx and left for a few minutes and then washed with Bilberry again to remove any ironx residue,
Dried,
polished with DA with mequiar's 205 and a microfiber pad,
Sealed with Gtechniq C5 and then coated with EXOv2,
re-balanced.

So here's the new wheels next to the old ones, a few pictures of them next to each other and then old and new on the car.

Really pleased with them and they will be really easy to keep clean now they're all sealed up.

While I had the front passenger side wheel off I noticed there is a cutout in the arch liner and you can see the end of the gearbox, there's a cap which appears to be seeping some fluid so have ordered a replacement as this seems to be fairly common and just need to replace the cap. cap part number is 02M301211B

took the front arch liners out to clean in behind them.

Really wasn't too bad, quite a few little stones etc but nothing major.

I also removed the foam from behind the wheel arch. These are the bits of foam that cause all the rust problems with the outer arches. they soak up water and hold it right against the edge/seam of the arch and of course they rust because they never dry out properly. Both arches have tiny amount of bubbling where the foam has been so will need replaced at some point but they're fin for now.

As you can see from the picture below, the ends of the foam are still full of water and it's been a few days since it rained/roads were wet.

Got some wheel nut covers to go with my new wheels. The centre caps on the old wheels covered them but now they're exposed so just helps neaten them up a bit. Gave them a coat of Gtechniq EXOv2 to help protect them and so they're easy to keep clean.

Got them on amazon for about £15 but they're a great fit and have the Volkswagen lettering on them. They came with the little metal pick to remove them too so have put that in the space in the boot that's cut into the polystyrene.  :happy2:

I bought smoked ones from ebay.

I followed the instructions in this video:

and it was fairly easy. One of the clips on the old indicator broke as I removed the top cover as you can see in the picture with the old and new ones side by side but not too bothered. Was going to keep them as spares so have kept the other one but just dumped the one with the broken clip.

Yeah, I'll keep a look out for the ones with black inserts as I think they'd look much nicer than the standard silver ones.

Chris

Have you got a link for the smoked indicators ? Looks real nice

Chris

Wait, what's that? Control for heated seats?

No, I don't have heated seats. It's the resistor pack for the heater blower. It would only work on setting four but has worked perfectly since I replaced the resistor pack

Had the car remapped today by celtic tuning. Mainly to get rid of the EGR functionality as it has been blanked off but also had him put on the celtic tuning stage one map instead of the superchips one that was on it.

All good but engine management light still on so scanned the car, been about a month since I scanned it last, and it's thrown up this:

Changed over indicators for smoked ones which I think look much neater.

I think it looks much neater now, they were a bit fiddly but fairly easy to change, was quite dirty inside so was a good chance to clean out the insides.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs104%2Fbailachris%2FIMG_1721.jpg&hash=b1511d1729e0c37d09f66ed5b403f64549c0ef79)

Chris

Hey, yeah, there were always a few little bits and pieces I wanted to do with it. Getting into the more expensive mods now though so there will be less updates with that. It really needs a good detail but I'm too busy working shifts or cleaning everyone elses cars to get around to doing mine! haha.

Looks mint that mate, do they do blue stitch would look awesome but colour coding on mine

Thanks, you can get anything you want as long as you're willing to pay for it. I got these ones from ebay as red stitch is quite a common mod but I'm sure there will be different colour options available, if not advertised then find a seller who does them in red and get in touch with them and ask them to make a blue one, sure it won't be any hassle for them.  :happy2:

I did consider the black and blue theme for mine but black and red is just easier to get things for and my bike is blue and black so fancied something different for the car.

Something I have noticed though is that because the leather on the handbrake lever is thicker than the original stuff then the button to release the handbrake isn't moving freely. I will need to remove the leather again and sand off a bit of the backing where it tucks back on itself to make it a bit thinner so it doesn't catch on the button.

That's the golf booked in for Friday to get the new sachs clutch, dmf and release bearing changed as well as a new rear wheel bearing and post dpf exhaust gas temp sensor fitted.

Not going to be cheap but just don't have the time, space or confidence to do these jobs myself.

So, had a call from the garage fitting my clutch & flywheel today. They have had a problem with the Sachs flywheel I got from Darkside Developments. There are apparently welds on the back of the flywheel (which is otherwise identical to the OEM one removed) which are fouling on a plate between the gearbox and engine...

Phoned Darkside and explained the situation and they spoke directly to the garage, they have looked at one of their other kits which also has these welds but say they have not heard of this problem before.

Unfortunately it means the gearbox is going to have to come off again...  :sad1:

The garage is going to take the flywheel out and then decide if grinding the welds down is the best option or if it needs to be sent back to Darkside and replaced.

I am hopeful that Darkside will help cover some of the cost for the gearbox having to come off again but I know that is probably just wishful thinking.

Inconvenient to say the least...

That is bad news Chris and hope it is sorted out quicky and am sure darkside will sort some thing out

Yeah, hopefully the garage will have a chance to take the gearbox off again tomorrow and sort the problem. They said the car selects gear and can be moved but that there is definitely something binding/fouling inside and the only difference between the old flywheel and the new one is the raised welds (of which there are about 5 or 6) on the back of the flywheel.

Hopefully they'll just be able to grind them down and refit the box and it'll all be ok, which would be a lot less hassle than sending the part back to Darkside and waiting for another part which may have the same problem... surprised no one has had the same problem though with this kit... anyway, Depending on what they find then I'll get in touch with darkside and hopefully be able to sort something out with the cost of having to remove the gearbox again. If it has been fitted incorrectly by the garage, which I doubt, then i'm sure they'll be honest with me and not charge me for having to remove the box again.

Got the car back on Saturday evening from the garage and they confirmed it was the welds on the flywheel that were the problem, they had to take the box off and grind them down then put it all back together again. I've not got the bill yet but when I do then I'll get in touch with darkside/sachs and let them know what's happened, and maybe possibly get some kind of financial compensation (although I know that is still wishful thinking).

Having said all that, the car is generally running good, new clutch feels super smooth and car is pulling very smoothly. No warning lights on the dash and so far no abs/esp lights have come on so I'm fairly hopeful that replacing that rear wheel bearing has been the right call on that one rather than needing to replace the sensor. Car is much quieter on the road too so both the clutch release bearing and the wheel bearing were definitely going bad. New exhaust gas temp sensor seems to have sorted the engine management light too.

One problem with the golf is it is finding it difficult to start if left over night/for a long time. It'll be slow to turn over at first and then after about 4 or 5 seconds it'll fire and run fine. I have tried priming the heater plugs for longer or on and off a couple times and doing that has maybe helped a slight amount. I believe the car had a new battery around a year ago so don't think it's that. This morning while starting the car then it almost fired up and then an "engine fault - garage" message came up. Checked with VCDS when I got home and it threw up this:

000801 - Engine Speed Sensor (G28)
               P0321 - 006 - Implausible Signal - Intermittent

So will keep an eye on that and see if it pops up again and replace it if needs be, will order a set of glow plugs anyway and get them fitted to see if that helps.

After a little digging online then that engine speed sensor fault code could have been thrown up just because the car cranked but didn't fire for longer than it liked.

It's not come up again although still have the slow starts so going to replace the glow plugs and see if that helps.

Could be worth checking your battery. Mates TDI mk5 had the same when it started to go cold and battery was not holding its charge.

Yeah, will keep an eye on it too over the next couple of weeks and see if the charge drops when left sitting. I think it had a new battery about this time last year before I bought it but will need to check with the previous owner

Chris
Hi Chris, Excellent right up, I don't know how you found time for all these mods, and still compile a detailed work in progress. may I inquire.  My motor is 170. would the manifold conversion eliminate the rough start up when cold, other than this she drives faultlessly. I have a little play in the actuator side and wondered if this was the cause, and is it worth it with having make  to the new manifold  fit. thanks.

Hey @DOBERMAN19 (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=18038)

Really sorry I didn't see your message until now! The manifold conversion certainly helped my slightly rough idle and I felt that it made the low down power smoother but the improvement is quite minimal. The main reason I replaced mine was because it was leaking at the actuator and I knew there was a lot of gunge inside it. Cleaning out the ASV and EGR valve could be the reason for the improvements I felt and would highly recommend getting them and the intake manifold off and cleaned. As for changing it to the aluminium one then, it was a pain in the arse to fit right but I'm glad I did it.

All the best,

Chris

Hi Chris. many thanks for your reply,  my egr and the inlet manifold are clean, but i still suffer from a rough cold start, but to be honest i think that i'd rather have the rough cold start, than part with about £600 to replace it with an oem manifold, after all there's no guarantee that it's the manifold thats at fault. Regards.

Hmm, not sure what your cold start issue might be... Has the car been remapped? Heater plugs been replaced? Have you got VCDS to see if there are any fault codes?

Yeah the OEM Plastic inlet manifold is very expensive, I see that Darkside developments has the for sale for £400. But yeah, not really worth it unless that is definitely the part that is causing your cold start issue.

Cheers,

Chris

Chris

Hi Chris, where did you get the subframe bolts and spacers from?

Changed the glow plugs and rocker cover gasket today (68k miles) and started fine afterwards, the real test will be once it's sat over night and see if it starts better when it's cold and sat for a while.

While I had the rocker cover off then I checked the part number on the injectors and it ends 073T. I believe that the part numbers of the dodgy injectors ended 073D and 073M so it looks like mine have definitely been replaced under the recall. I had figured they had been done when I researched the history of the car when I bought it and contacted VWUK and they said there were no outstanding recalls for the car. Nice to be able to check properly though

Not a great image but you can see the end of the part number 073T:

Thanks @abz132 (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=11024),

I'll hopefully get some time to give the car a good clean, fit my new headlights (which I've had for ages and not got around to fitting ) and then get some pictures of it.

Car still didn't start first time this morning but fired up better than usual on the second try. My mpg also seems to have improved quite a bit on my last two drives, up by about 5 - 8 mpg on my usual trip from home to town and back.

I changed the fuel filter this morning (68k miles) as i'd not changed it since my oil in fuel contamination problem. Fuel looks like it should now so changed the filter and will see if that helps. If I continue to have this starting issue then it is possible that in tank fuel pump needs to be changed as the fuel contaminated with oil can stop them from working correctly. Will keep this updated as I do stuff though.

Going to order a few new screws for the bumper as they're a bit rusty, particularly the two screws that hold the centre of the bumper to the slam panel, you can just seen on in the last picture. Also going to get some new wheel arch liner screws as there are a couple missing or rusty.

Not much of an update but been feeling put to shame by @bonelorry (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=7168)... Only had about an hour and a half so it just got a good wash, wheels cleaned and then put some Gtechniq C2v3 to give it some protection until I have some more time to give it a right going over. Wheels are so easy to clean since I sealed them with Gtechniq C5 and EXO. Pleased with how it looks just now

Managed to get some things done on the golf that have been waiting a while! Massive thanks to my friend Murray for helping me out and letting me put the car up on his lift, made the job so much easier.

The car is going for it's MOT on Wednesday so wanted to give it a good check over and get a few little things done. So, today we fitted the sub-frame spacers with new bolts, the lower gearbox mount insert with new stretch bolt and changed one of my anti roll bar links that had a bit of play in it and was starting to clunk a bit.

The gearbox mount is a powerflex red version which is for the diesel, it has a little more flex in it than the one for the petrol cars so that it doesn't transfer too much vibration to the inside of the car.

A few pictures, anti roll bar link:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs104%2Fbailachris%2FIMG_2753.jpg&hash=8d01f0ceb14d18d4ffc8dba16f406a78a85cfd30)

lower gearbox mount insert with new stretch bolt:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs104%2Fbailachris%2FIMG_2750_1.jpg&hash=5e19f16d8055effd2d10929af396b9195ac5398f)

Subframe spacers and new bolts:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs104%2Fbailachris%2FIMG_2749_1.jpg&hash=e7f535ee468e6509cdf113152e470a25cccf12c4)

Really pleased to get these little jobs done. The gearbox mount insert has actually made a huge difference, There is hardly any slack in it now so it feels really tight and smooth coming on and off the throttle, there is no noticeable extra vibration inside the car at idle or any other speed and it just feels great, really worthwhile mod.

Just had the golf for a little run and the engine mount insert has made such an awesome improvement. It's so much smoother when changing gear and pulling away from junctions. Really pleased with it. I would highly recommend it to anyone, it's only £25 for it and took two minutes to change it.

Hi Chris have you got the link for the gearbox mount please?

Hi, I think I bought mine direct from powerflex but they have them on demon tweeks, amazon and awesomegti for all about the same price.

Be careful to get the right colour as they do different ones yellow for petrol, red for diesel and blue or black race ones. They also changed the mounts slightly for cars after mid 2008 so make sure to get the right one. All the info is on the powerflex website here:

https://www.powerflex.co.uk/road-series/products/Golf+MK5+1K-737/1.html

and here is a link to them on Awesomegti:

Golf ticked over the 70k mark today. The day I bought it then it ticked over 60k so almost exactly 10k in a year (it's a year plus about a week).

MOT tomorrow and hopefully should go through without any trouble. Gave it a good hoover out this evening and will give it a wash in the morning, I know it won't make any odds to the MOT but it's always nice to have a clean car, especially when other people are looking at it that closely.  :happy2:

Woohoo!!! Always nice when it passes it's MOT with no surprise advisories.  :jumpmove: :jumpmove:

There was an advisory for the other front ARB drop link has a dust seal slightly perished but still preventing the ingress of dirt but have a new one already so will change that soon.

Another advisory for brake discs being scored and rusty (particularly on the edges and inside faces) I saw that when it was up on my friends lift the other day so was already planning on getting a new set of discs and pads as well as a new rear caliper as one of them is a bit stuck so going to replace it.

Might even get the calipers painted red while I've got them off to do the discs and pads.

But pleased with that, I knew about the couple of things they've mentioned and no surprises so that's always good.

Here's the advisory sheet, it just mentions the front offside disc but they're all pretty rough on the inside faces and outer edges so just going to replace them all. The parking brake performance that it mentions is because of the stuck caliper, the nearside he said was really good but the offside one was only just a pass so that's why I'm getting the new caliper.

Managed to get loads done on the golf today, again massive thanks to Murray and the use of his lift! New discs, pads and a new rear caliper. Also gave the calipers a really good clean up and will hopefully have time to paint them soon. Will put up a proper update tomorrow with the pictures.

One other little thing arrived today:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs104%2Fbailachris%2FIMG_2840.jpg&hash=50400f58d695b353806d14f189ab96fa2d2fe749)

Just something silly but I like it, pleased with how standard it looks, most people will probably never notice it. Now I need to get one for the other blank. Not sure if I should get another eject or if I should get one of the oil slick ones or something.

New discs and pads fitted all around, new offside rear caliper plus a bit of new brake pipe, wire brushed and then painted the rear dust shields with a quick coat of black paint to protect them a little longer and can only get to them when the discs were off. Calipers cleaned with needle gun and then air powered wire wheel to give them a good freshen up ready for painting which I'll hopefully manage to do in the next few weeks. They'll just need a good wash, quick once over with wire brush again and then some IPA before primer and paint.

Some pictures, all from Iphone 4 so not the best quality but you get the idea.

So this is the front offside disc which was the advisory on the MOT last week. as you can see the inside face of it is pretty bad, the outside face didn't look too bad but it was definitely time for them to be changed as it had quite a bad lip and quite deep waves/grooves on both faces:

Inside face:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs104%2Fbailachris%2FIMG_2830.jpg&hash=ba1632f3fb411a0f129bbbbaa0de774b7c8c5cc1)

Outside face, this was the worst part of the outer lip:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs104%2Fbailachris%2FIMG_2831.jpg&hash=36788f10d4e17e58441ea5172efa2cecdbbc7279)

Rear dust sheilds are both pretty corroded on the bottom edges but mounting points all seem to be fairly solid so gave them a quick once over with a wire brush and then some black paint to protect them a little:

Before:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs104%2Fbailachris%2FIMG_2826.jpg&hash=8e23de3a620f787b57156b0450f3efa618d49c05)

After, not perfect but a lot better and hopefully will help it last a bit longer:

all back together and back on the ground looking much better:

Can't wait to paint the calipers red as they'll look so much nicer but even just cleaned up they look a lot better.

The new brakes feel really nice, obviously only done about 20 miles with them but they're silky smooth with plenty of progressive bite. Really impressed with the delphi stuff that I got, well packaged, came with everything you needed, little fitting kit bits etc and seems to be nice quality.

Couldn't have done it without my friend Murray and having the car up on the lift just makes life so much easier!

Bit of Gtechniq C2v3 beading, it's amazing how well this product works and how long it lasts for just being a spray on/wipe off product.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs104%2Fbailachris%2FIMG_2799.jpg&hash=e32d5d917d4b0314bce13e08b8359db5af9c1343)

I've also spent a bit of time going back through this thread and have edited my first post to make a thread guide and mods list so if anyone is looking for something in particular that I have done then it should be easier to find. I'll try and keep it updated as I do more as I do have quite a few more plans for the car and will post part numbers/useful info in there too. :happy2:

Been a productive day!

Managed to get my brake calipers all painted and i'm over the moon with how they look now. I did most of the cleaning work a couple of weeks ago when I replaced the discs and pads but the calipers had started to rust over again and the hubs on the new discs were getting quite rusty already too so gave them all a quick clean and then painted the hubs and edges of the discs with silver hammerite and the calipers with red caliper paint. Cleaned and painted a few other bits and pieces like suspension struts and dust shields while I had the wheels off too.

So here are some pictures from my day:

Calipers rusting over again were cleaned with a wire brush and some 800 grit sandpaper then wiped down with holts brake cleaner to make sure they were super clean ready for paint.

Deep cleaned the wheels while they were off for painting the calipers, I polished them and then sealed them with Gtechniq C5 and EXO when I first got them and before fitting them to the car so they were super easy to clean this time and came up really well.

I used a Vikan wheel brush,
Bilberry Wheel cleaner (non acidic so isn't as harsh on the wheels),
Iron X.

50/50:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs104%2Fbailachris%2FIMG_2890.jpg&hash=5d9c94b91d3bff1c847146fb4b791520e58f0883)

Bilberry wheel cleaner and Vikan brush:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs104%2Fbailachris%2FIMG_2891.jpg&hash=0d8ddcc63e03ff4d9b09bf775fd1c469dc650267)

Iron X left to dwell for a few minutes, not a huge amount of contamination:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs104%2Fbailachris%2FIMG_2887.jpg&hash=012b343f83b655481eca6ea9a6d70c82c0a79b44)

Washed with Bilberry wheel cleaner again and given a good rinse off. The little spots that are left are tar but There wasn't that much and I wanted to get on with my brakes so left it for now but will give them a going over again soon and remove it then:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs104%2Fbailachris%2FIMG_2889.jpg&hash=8d1a29b18af6440c1eb34847512fa6a8b4aecc39)

Faces all cleaned in the same order:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs104%2Fbailachris%2FIMG_2888.jpg&hash=5a13314da00cb4122f79073c15c84586b2a68f16)

I then left them to dry while finishing my brakes and put some Gtechniq tyre and trim on the tyre sidewalls to give them a little shine as can be seen in my last post with the brakes painted.

My H&R front anti roll bar also arrived after buying it from a forum member, thanks again @Biano44 (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=6785) . Going to get it fitted once I have a rear one to be fitted at the same time (hopefully that and a set of H&R lowering springs going to be bought soon):

Oil change done tonight at 70500 miles with Quantum dpf safe low ash oil. Also gave it a flush with forte new generation engine flush before dropping the old oil and then put in Forte oil system protector additive with the new oil. I never usually do an engine flush when changing the oil but my mechanic friend said it was a good idea so if he says it's worth it then I trust that.

Engine flush going in with the old oil, car left to idle for a while to let it get around the system and apparently helps remove varnishing and gunky deposits:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs104%2Fbailachris%2FIMG_2943.jpg&hash=f189e5fd5299ad9cab862e68e3740d229357dc33)

Old oil dropped out:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs104%2Fbailachris%2FIMG_2946.jpg&hash=1cd3a4da6b549604526a5257d7131536a39262a4)

Oil system protector additive which went in with the new oil:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs104%2Fbailachris%2FIMG_2947.jpg&hash=2d38845cd20b852153a457a3b49b784281f15982)

While my car was sitting idling then I helped my friend Murray, who has just bought a mk5 gt tdi 170 with a few bits on his car. He fitted the hardware for the boot pop kit and then I used VCDS to code the centre button on the key fob to make it pop the boot. I also switched off the selective door locking/unlocking as well as activating the horn/alarm chirp when locking/unlocking the car. We also fitted an LED interior light kit to his car.

Here's a photo of the two of them, my car idling at the lift and can see the footwell LED's have been Done on Murrays:

Removed the seats and gave everything a good wet vac. The interior wasn't bad at all but it's amazing how much the wet vac can extract. In total I found £2.27 and 1 Norwegian Krone  It was pretty dusty down the inside edge of the seats and the only way to get to it properly is to remove them, only 4 screws and a couple of electrical connectors (One of which is for the seat side airbags so battery was disconnected before hand and connector taped up to avoid any accidental discharge oooer!  :scared:)

A few pictures:

This was with the drivers seat removed:

And the rest of the car:

Didn't really get any finished pictures but looks much better.

Also ordered some new bleed nipples as I'm going to be replacing the brake fluid soon and the nipples on the calipers look a bit worse for wear so going to replace them:

After I changed my inlet manifold for the alloy one with no swirl flaps then the vacuum actuator has been made redundant. Until now I'd just folded the rubber pipe over on itself and cable tied it together to prevent leaks, however I was never happy with this solution and have since managed to source a little silicone cap for it which is much neater and will proved a proper seal.

Here it is since I did the manifold change:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs104%2Fbailachris%2FIMG_3054.jpg&hash=dc833e8ba591ccb50f7ee9f1758529da32fa298d)

Pipe removed:

Silicone cap:

Here is the company I got it from (as a free sample  :happy2:) They have loads of sizes and colours etc. I would have liked mine to be black but they didn't do it in that size so just got what they had:

While the car was in at a local garage getting it's clutch and flywheel replaced then I also supplied and asked them to change the end cap for the gearbox as it was leaking gearbox fluid.

While I had the car up on the lift doing the brakes then I noticed that it hadn't been changed so got the garage to order up a new cap for me as they'd lost the last one I'd supplied and just fitted it myself. Once again I have to thank my friend Murray for his help and the use of his lift.

Before, still leaking:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs104%2Fbailachris%2FIMG_3111.jpg&hash=ee9f11f68bdf91c669deba2230b079ecdecc1676)

Old cap removed and cleaned up around the area:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs104%2Fbailachris%2FIMG_3112.jpg&hash=476e332526ec935a54d904c652d81a7a18808cd8)

New cap all fitted:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs104%2Fbailachris%2FIMG_3114.jpg&hash=bca56a8fd0148319f73b4775504016a99a1e3681)

Once the new cap was fitted then we checked the fluid level and it took quite a bit so was definitely needing it sorted! Glad to finally have this little job done as it's been on my mind since I found it.

Another little thing is I removed the GT badge from the front grille and I'm quite pleased without it, looks a bit neater at the front end. Can easily be refitted anytime though.

Massive thanks to @dazza (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=10457)  for saving the images and meaning I didn't have to re-upload everything!

Have started to upload some new images to imgur so hopefully it won't do the same as photobucket.

Anyway, back at the ranch, there's really not been much to report with the golf anyway other than general washes and putting miles on it. Have got an engine warning light up just now and a scan says it's a problem with the glow plug or the wiring to it in cylinder 1 so will investigate that when I get time, however, the car is running really well just now. Here's a pic after a recent wash:

I noticed that one of your future mod plans is upgrading to Bilstein (http://4wheelonline.com/BilsteinShocks.4997) with H&R springs. I've been seeing some suggestions on pairing those parts. Were you able to do the mod? Hoping to get some feedback on it.

Hi @GT-eye (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=23607)  I've not had the time or the money to spend on the golf lately so not done any suspension mods. Not even got around to fitting my H&R anti roll bars yet.

Cheers,

Chris

I have the B12 with eibach springs on my TDI.

All though my car was lowered from when I ordered it from VW back in the days, the B12 kit is alot better to drive with in my opinion :)
And I don't even upgraded the roll bars yet.

I know what you going through Chris :D - No time or money these days to stuff I want for the car.. Still need new front brakes to finish my brake setup

Just been reading through your thread Chris! Great work on your car, lots of attention to detail. Did you get anything back about the clutch you fitted that the garage had to grind down to get it to fit?

I’ve not long had my graphite blue gt tdi pd170, so reading with interest the egr and manifold chat.  The manifold change certainly sounded like a lot more work than planned!

Hey, thank you very much. I really need to do more work on my car again. Life has been a bit crazy this last year so haven't done anything with it other than put fuel in it, replaced a brake light and given it a good wash every now and then when it's not been bloody snowing. haha!

No, clutch seems to have been fine since they fitted it. I still don't quite know what the problem was that the garage had. To be honest I just needed it back on the road at the time so I didn't question them too much.

Yeah, that's why I wrote the review on the manifold change as it really wasn't very straight forward... Certainly not the bolt off, bolt on job as described on the darkside website. It's been faultless since it was fitted though other than the bolts rusting which looks rubbish. I would probably do it again if I had another 170 and the manifold needed replaced as the plastic ones with swirl flaps are so stupidly expensive.

Thanks,

Chris

Yeh, know the feeling.  Mine is the work horse and daily, so it’s tricky getting the time on it.  Perhaps I’ll have a look at my manifold and egr, may be worth giving it a clean up if not swapping it out for the aluminium one. :happy2:

Yeah, definitely worth giving it a good clean out. If it's anything like mine was then it'll need it!

Hey all,

Been ages since I posted about the golf. I still have it and have done a few things to it. This year has been super busy with a house move/renovation and other various things. The golf has had some general maintenance, service etc and a couple of things fixed/replaced. I've given it plenty of washes when I've had time but that's been about it i'm afraid. I still have a few plans for it but got to save up a bit first and then find time to do anything.

Anyway, here's what's been happening over the last few months.

After the MOT there were a couple of advisories,

Front ARB drop link had a split in it so that was replaced:

Gave it a service too:

Then I replaced all 4 wheel bearings. Front two were advisories as they had very slight play, was getting a bit of noise from one of the back ones so just did them as well. While doing one of the front ones then one of the three bolts snapped off on the lower ball joint so had to replace that as well.

New and old bearings:

After that then the slight exhaust leak I had turned in to quite a bad one as the connecting sleeve on the exhaust had completely fallen apart, sounded good though. New one fitted:

Eever since I got the car then it had at times struggled to start. It would turn over a few times with the first turn of the key but wouldn't start but always fired up with the second turn of the key so it never bothered me much. Until the 5th of July, when it just wouldn't start or turn over at all. I checked all the obvious things but there was nothing I could see or do about it so I got the AA to come and pick up the car, hate seeing my car on the back of a recovery truck:

It turned out to be the starter motor needing replaced. The car has started perfectly first turn of the key every time every since so it's obviously been on the way out since before I got the car.

After all that, the car deserved a wash:

ABS and Traction control lights came up again and saying it was rear left... again... So changed the rear wheel speed sensor and they've gone out again. Had to remove the hub again to remove the sensor.

I removed the securing screw for the sensor then while pulling on the sensor to remove it then the head of it came off and left the finger part sticking through the hub carrier! Doh! Removed the hub and drifted the rest of the sensor out.. Cleaned out the cavity and slipped the new one through with some silicone grease as some lube. All back together and thanfully that seems to have sorted it.

I Will hopefully have some more interesting updates in the coming year. Have just finished moving house and it needed a fair bit of work so the golf has taken the back seat, it doubles as a decent van with the back seats down but it is filthy inside now

Some more maintenance the last few days.

Had a sticking front right caliper. Brakes were getting pretty hot so didn't want to damage them. I wondered if it might just be the pad slides being dirty so cleaned them up and regreased everything but still sticking. Pushed the piston further out on the caliper and could see it was getting quite corroded behind the dust seal so got a new caliper. Figured if I was going to have to bleed the brakes I might as well replace the rubber brake line as well as it was looking a bit rough in places so I got a front set of Hel braided brake lines.

Painted the new caliper, and all went together without too much bother. Can see how filthy the caliper carrier is too but didn't have time to get any paint on it so will do that another day.

Less than it'd cost to post in the right part of the forum  :slap: :P

Anyway, Golf passed it's MOT today which is always good news. Advisory for slight play in rear antiroll bar links but I have two new ones for when I eventually get around to fitting my uprated H&R antiroll bars...

Also noticed my drivers side indicator has started flickering instead of blinking properly so have ordered a set of the sequential wing mirror indicators from V4rley in the car parts for sale section. Wanted to get them anyway but this seems like a good excuse

Hopefully get some decent updates soon.

Chris
