Title: New Admin
Post by: rich83 on February 07, 2014, 02:46:15 pm
Welcome back

I just wanted to write a quick post to introduce you to the new Administration team here at www.mk5golfgti.co.uk. The forum will now be run as a partnership between myself (richwig83) and Alex (vRSAlex)

Our aim is to continue the great forum that SteveP created back in 2008. One thing we explicitly want to keep is its ethos of unbiased and impartial advice, something that we feel sets it aside from the rest. As a starting point we want to completely overhaul the for-sale section, as this seems to cause problems. There will be new rules which will hopefully dissuade the casual scammers from trying their luck. These rules will be outlined over the weekend and a new 'Sticky' posts added to every section. Further changes will be outlined as and when we get around to them. For all intents and purposes the forum will run as is... we want it like that because we know you want it like that

The forum has now been transferred over to our new server, hopefully you will already notice an increase in performance. We intend to upgrade the forum software from v1.1.19 to the latest v2.0.7 in due course which should again help stability and performance. If you experience any problems at all please contact us either by PM or emailing mk5 golf gti forum at gmail dot com and we will try and resolve any issues as quickly as possible.

We will be keeping the forum free for regular users. We will in due course ask for donations to cover the cost of the server running and maintenance. Transparency is the key, and we will only ask for donations if the pot is drying up, with any surplus funds being held for future bills.

We will keep the current moderator structure in place, unless they specifically request otherwise.

We have had some great help in setting up the forum on the new server from James at www.xigen.co.uk ... so thanks to him.

Best Wishes
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Frich%2Fimg%2FMK5%2Fadmin.jpg&hash=796764679bef93643e975703f6d1011a7439ee43)

Well done Rich, Alex and Jamie.  :congrats: :congrats:

This forum is a great place to be. Met some great peeps, made some good friends, enjoyed the banter and bought loads of sh*t. If things continue as they are, you'd have succeeded in my book.

No chap, done my share ( 8 years this year ) and felt it best to leave the guys to it who still have the cars and an interest. Mine has  long since gone and with my job I rarely get the time to get on here. Will still be around as I have made some life long friends thanks to this old place!

Possibly not the right place and a bit too early to ask but will you guys be looking at suggestions from members on ideas of how to to improve the forum further? I don't have any myself but i'm sure there are members who may have seen features on other forums that work really well which would work well here for instance?

just a thought  :happy2:.

Thanks

I think it's cost and to be honest this forum works quite well.
I've seen a forum migration on another site I am very active on and it's not a fun or pretty process...lol.

We will (eventually) upgrade to v2 SMF which should be perfectly fine. One snag with this is that we might have to totally re-design the theme if it doesnt transfer correctly in the upgrade process.

SMF is still being supported an updated so its far from a "dead" bit of software. Its something that we can look into down the line, but I cant see it happening any time soon.

Content management system, web based front end. Rather than a "You are being directed to the forum" auto redirect. :)

Just do a htaccess 301 redirect, as there might be more to it than just moving files to a different directory. :happy2:

It would be cool if the front end had a proper website, but time is money I know. :chicken:

When we eventually upgrade we will make ww.mk5golfgti.co.uk the default and get rid of the sub directory

Personally, I'd keep the forum in its sub directory, there's no benefit to moving it and possible problems not only locally but also in SERP's (initially at least).
*UNLESS the new forum software has some nice features for creating a shiny front end..?

IF you wanted the forum to be the new front end just add a .htaccess file in the root directory with the following:

--
Redirect 301 / http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum
--

That will automatically redirect http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/ to http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum - it wouldn't take any time to redirect unlike a meta redirect.

This would leave you free to develop (or not) a new front end with all the main things about the Mk5, could be a simple WordPress or Joomla site with some nice Graphics, sliding JScript type shizzle.

Common issues and fixes: DV's / Cam Followers / Rusty wheel arches
Frequently Asked Questions: possibly link into forum
Model Line UP: GTI / Eddy / Pirelli
Calendar of Events:
Donations: Simple PP
Merchandise: Simple PP buttons, Calendar, Stickers etc.
Main Sections of the Forum:  Latest Posts etc.

There maybe a mod to populate most of the above via the forum... or perhaps just via RSS to gather some of the data.

* Lots of ways of doing it, but as said I'd leave the forum in the sub directory (with 301) unless the new software has some CMS features to create a more engaging Index.

Either way, it all works and the forum is still very quick and MUCH quicker than it was before the change over to the new server, so :drinking: to all,.
