Title: Adolf the Golf
Post by: Clarky on June 13, 2022, 12:44:38 pm
So, pretty much 10 months ago I said goodbye to my company car scheme and took the allowance instead..I needed something as a 2nd car incase I leave the house when the wife is out and it's too far to cycle...hello to Adolf the Golf! All I wanted was heated leather ( back ache is helped with heated seats) and xenon lights ( once you have had them you can't go back!) and beyond that it had to be something fun to drive with a bit of shove...in the auction at work up popped a 2 owner, black Golf GTI, pretty well specced, good history, 5 door ( handy for the kids) and so I bit the bullet! Happy with it most of the time, have done more maintenance and fire fighting than mods, but I'm sure that will come! (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220613/24f94e985ad8fd2a160d8bb0d06533d0.jpg)

First up was a service..was done around 3k before I got it but I like to draw a line in the sand with these things..so filter etc. plus 2 new driveshafts.. I also realised as a lazy old man how much I slouch onto an armrest as I drive so that was the first mod I suppose!(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220613/b682b375e01fab087a67832268b38105.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220613/5a1dfa9f45f5f9a285d2a4eed8a31a5b.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220613/5738665034b5586c62c53b8871c693f2.jpg)

So...Next thing I missed from my old cars was a decent headunit and having the ability to control it from the steering wheel. It already had mfsw so I bought the new headunit on here...fitted the DAB aerial under the top vent and I absolutely hate blanking panels so fitted the Aux and USB ports infront of the ashtray too. Still can't get the mfsw to talk to the headunit despite having the adapter on the back..its on the to-do list! So, when the last owner got the calipers replaced they went with the bare metal option...always looked tatty even behind the chunky 18" Monzas...out comes the paint and its better...not perfect as I couldn't be arsed taking the calipers and carriers off the car. Maybe when I do the discs and pads I'll have a better go at it! Thats another minor irritation ticked off of the list! Maybe I’ll leave them be...am about to fire the patent parts cannon at the thing ( car, not rear caliper!) to try to cure a boost leak that the OBDeleven has picked up on after my jaunt to France...that and a further 7 fault codes. I can see this being my newest money pit

Did you replace the PCV gasket? OEM ones seem to cost more than the PCV itself so I wondered if anyone bothered??

More money thrown at Adolf today....a job I never thought I'd tackle too...pretty easy to do the air conditioning top up and well worth the effort! Icy cold air blowing out now after using Windows and a sunroof more over the past month than I have in 10 years or more. The gas is expensive and I don't know how easy it'll be to get the £10 rebait on the can...but hey...its another job ticked off . Hopefully none of you will tell me I've just filled up a bleed point for something else with A/c refrigerant..lol(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220803/4bbf29bb4004cef24de2b2f266d4230b.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220803/daf995c0bd30ecea2a08756f6aedf2f3.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220803/5bd0684f10040a4181c1aa1c127fb581.jpg)

So today's little job before I start work...the wheels need a refurb I am fully aware of that, but the centre caps being swapped has drawn my eye away from that temporarily and for a fraction of the cost too! Have also got rid of the locking wheel nuts thanks to the muppet who did my puncture repair destroying the key with his impact wrench...despite my pleas of "I'll put the wheel back on"...ffs...hopefully my theory of nobody nicks wheels anymore of these is true! Just need a set of plastic covers for the nuts now. So, the sagging headlining saga....£5 of spray glue didn't fix it, but in the immortal words of Whitney Houston "it's not right, but it's okay" ....its a job that can wait for a proper fix when I am not spending half my wages on gas and electric! Lovely car and a great purchase, can't beat the 18" monzas! Yes, these cars are a little bit of a money pit but they are usually only little nibbles at your bank account.

Enjoying the thread so far!  :drinking:

The wheels look better than the headlining at the minute! Thanks for the comment, I cannot help but think about whether I should have just stuck with a company car at times...but then I look at the Golf and think that I am saving it one bit at a time....by swapping a bit, chucking the old one away, then replacing with a brand new bit! Lol.

So bit of a busy few days with the old beast! Starting with the smaller stuff...the old DV which was in better shape than I thought it would be..In the bin! As mighty car mods would say...New GFB and new solenoid too. Worst bit was getting the multiplug off. Seems to make a nicer noise now, no noticeable difference apart from that, but it's future proof! So this happened a few weeks back..before MOT time..I decided to bite the bullet and buy a gravity turbo back system..the old exhaust had a repair from before my tenure which I hated, it was a mish mash of factory and Miltek and was generally a mess. Yes the Gravity is cheap and I am not expecting it to be the best..but it has a 200 cell cat, has neat welds, fits pretty good, isn't too loud and is better than what was there previously. It came with all the clamps etc. all I bought was a new set of nuts for the turbo, though upon inspection the downpipe had been off before and not too long ago. I used some ebay vouchers and got the lot for under £400.. 3 inch downpipe with 200 cell cat and the middle silencer and backbox too..bargain! I am sure there will be the " why not buy a proper brand" questions...the answer is I don't need that on a car like this. Everyone is different I guess! Impressed by the price of the exhaust system. Under £600 for a full TBE with 200 cel cat make all the other systems look ridiculously over priced. What’s the catch??
Title: Re: Adolf the Golf
Post by: Clarky on October 25, 2022, 02:04:51 pm
I think the catch is that it should have been an awful lot more than that but I piggybacked some voucher codes and somehow it went through! Other than that so far so good. I am sure it won’t outlast some of the competition, but it’ll outlast my ownership of the car in all likelihood!

So my other advisory on the MOT was 2 weeping dampers...as you can see I also found another broken coil ( there were the rears done on the MOT before I bought it) at the front so I already had a set of adjustable coilovers with pillow ball top mounts and uprated drop links ready to go ...what a sh!t of a job getting the dampers out of the hubs! I was toying with swapping the hubs for the aluminium Passhat ones in the future but frankly don't ever want to take the wheels off ever again now. Have them at factory height give or take and the dampers pretty soft for road use..Will start looking for bushes and wish bones etc early next year and maybe ARBs too..depends how often I use it in anger in the spring as I have another track toy available which was going to get mothballed for a rebuild. Let's see! So while I was away with the GLW in NY Adolf had an MOT and a belt change....I won't put the price on here as I am a long term customer and don't want to promise they'll do the same for all ( though I am not special I can assure you!) but I would recommend FastFit Cheshunt to all...clean MOT, they did replace the exhaust clamp that I asked them to aswell but said the Golf is in rude health for its age...Good to hear! If it's rusty chances are the bearing needs replacing too, there's a magnetic ring attached to it that the sensor reads. Had the same issue and replaced both the sensor and bearing and the lights went away. Really tight big bolt to get off if you do it yourself. And you might want to replace the break dust shields at the same time as they need the bearing off too.
Title: Re: Adolf the Golf
Post by: Octoparrot on February 03, 2023, 10:15:44 am
Yes replace the bearing, cured my issue. What happens is the magnetic ring rusts, swells and breaks up sometimes wearing the end of the sensor away.
Title: Re: Adolf the Golf
Post by: mjmallia on February 03, 2023, 11:40:07 am
The rings are removable/replaceable but there are two sizes of rear bearings so need to remove stuff to find out which one your car is fitted with.  TPS and dealer do not know when looking up the car.

I replaced my magnetic rings a few years ago due to them falling apart and bring up error codes........fine ever since.

A lot cheaper than a bearing if it is still good, as paid about £8 for a ring..........dont ask me what size I got, as can not remember

Thanks all..I have it in my head to replace the suspension and bushes etc so new bearings are on the list, already done the shocks and dampers after all...ever expanding! Be nice to stop firefighting and do some cosmetic bits too soon! Have crusty front wings, one rear arch too plus 4 of the worst refurbished wheels ever! Lol...me and a mate looked and we don't think the did anything but sand down the old bubbles of white worm and spray over them..oh well...from 50 paces Adolf looks the tits still in my opinion

So Monday off of work and time for an oil and filter change...did buy an oil suction device but it was useless...had to get under to swap the filter anyway I suppose! Also gave it a good wash and polish for good measure. Always seems odd polishing a rusty pair of wings! Tried to fit the 2nd hose for the PCV but no joy...it is an utter pain to do when under time pressure. Also two new front tyres...Pirelli P7s...nothing special, but have a set of 17s that might end up shod with something stickier..(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230424/a22b569a1db832792f2e11604e3869bd.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230424/6bb66b10b5040d65102635e6f555ea36.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230424/0a3fad18c48f5983b1bffb14ed5e286e.jpg)

So I did the thermostat..wow. Wouldn't recommend it to my worst enemy, utter nightmare of a job. Alternator out was bad enough really, but then everything seemed to fight back. The good news is while I was there I did the bigger PCV hose as I had no skin on any knuckles anyways! The fabulous news is it now sits at 90 degrees on the gauge and the car runs better all round! As I disconnected the battery I am struggling to get the steering angle sensor to reset with the old left, right, centre method..can't clear it with OBDeleven either..well its off to Fastfit for tracking on Friday and if I haven't got round to it by then it can be on their to do list! I think before Le Mans I might try to fit some Lothian wings to tart the old boy up a bit...then I gotta find somewhere to redo the wheels. They have looked sh*te from the day I got it. Seems silly to throw tyres on sh*tty wheels but needs must! (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230517/27e07aa4784b8387ef8d64dc37e060de.jpg)

If it's any consolation I had the exact same issue! Tried, tried and tried again and it wouldn't clear... I'd started to think there was a bigger issue with the car as it had sat for 18 months before this but I took it out on a decent drive and it cleared while I was driving about  :jumpmove:

Yes as of today I have no warning lights at all!! Haven't been able to say that for a few months too...no abs/traction/tps light and no steering wheel light too! Yay..she is in for 4 wheel alignment ( road biased) in the morning as I can't see a track day happening for a few months now..all it will do is take my boy to football practice and maybe Costco at a push and I don't want it so twitchy if HRH decides to jump in.

Wheels are off for a refurb today. Back to factory with the grey middles and a diamond cut faces. Was tempted by black middles like the mk6, but think the factory look is best. Hopefully be done Friday afternoon ready to be refitted ready to go to Le Mans next week. Also a pair of front wings are coming from the bodyshop and are due Monday all things going well I'll get them on before setting off Thursday morning. So the wheels came back looking amazing! Had to have the edges rolled as I hadn't noticed but 2 had already been done and it would have looked odd otherwise. Went for the grey middles as per factory rather than black like the MK6's...also 2 new wings from Lothian. All credit to the paintwork . I have a background as a vehicle appraiser before I got to be an auctioneer and was trained to look for poor paint and poor repairs and these are great. The wing isn't VW alignment out of the box but isn't VW money either. A bit of patience and it's as good as the others ever were. For the money you can not go wrong. I think LC9Z is probably a total batch to get right but they did. I also cleaned the living daylights out of the wheel arches before the also cleaned and polished arch liners went back in. Looking good for the roadtrip to Le Mans on Thursday morning! Some nice work being done, spending the money is one thing but it’s so satisfying getting these jobs done. I think secretly we quite enjoy it, gives us something to do  :happy2:

Very true, I am so happy that the majority of the mechanical bits are sorted and hopefully now its just a bit of a tidy up and enjoy for a while. The bonnet strut appears to be on its way out after twatting my fingers fitting the wing ( replaced with broom handle on a temporary basis!) so will order one of those...headlining is a worry for me tbh, especially as its a sunroof model...don't seem to be many options out there.

Back from Le Mans after a little drive down the Mulsanne on Sunday evening! Found a chunk of the wrecked Jota as a souvenir too. Can didn't miss a beat, though a front wheel bearing is starting to protest so a new pair going on order after payday! Hard to find 97-99 Ron fuel in France..the Porsche is a real one with a giant statue behind it..if you have never been it is well worth it..this was my 10th and still magic! Didn't fully appreciate how long I had left it with just little bits of tinkering till today. Decided as I have 2 days off of work with cars to work on my car. Have removed the front grills to restore the plastic from grey to black. Easy enough to remove, was going to put them in the dishwasher as that works a treat only to be told by the good lady wife that it would be a quick and easy way for me to change my gender pronouns...did it by hand in the sink. Also for Christmas I bought myself a DA polisher and had a practice on the bonnet as I am probably going to replace the panel anyway and didn't want to just go balls deep all over the car. Has made a real difference to it, but it's not Harry Potter's wand so it's still a chipped but very shiny bonnet. I also had the pleasure of having someone swipe the rear wiper jet cover so popped a new one on. I don't want a trailer queen, but just want people to perhaps think " that's pretty tidy for a Mk5 Golf" and for it to be reliable is all. Have also done the interior and used what looks like the kids slime to pick up interior dust and boy does that work too! Topped off my a mighty car mods airfreshener ....just need to find a 5 door sunroof model roofliner, it'll probably be in Atlantis guarded by unicorns and a yeti . Being forced back into the office means a few more miles on it this year so booked for 2 rear tyres soon and a good once over Incase I've overlooked something obvious. Managed to get a thumb print on the lacquer of the lipstick but generally much happier with the look of it. Hard to see from the pics but night and day different in the flesh. The lipstick is in Diablo red from Peugeot left over from the GTI-6 many moons ago and still worked well. 4 coats of paint on it all, 3 coats of lacquer on the lipstick but left the satin/matt look on the other bits as per factory. All came apart and back together with no dramas. If you are thinking of doing it I say go for it! A T25 and T20 torq bit and two Philips for the fog light surrounds. Have a new genuine drivers idea door mirror indicator on its way too and new old stock genuine floor mat set too. The ones that came with it aren't lovely enough to stay in there now! Floor mats arrived today from VW Derby with the correct clips and looking good! The old ones came with the car and were awful, these have a much deeper pile to the carpet and fit like a glove too. Another good job done. Have a new drivers side indicator to fit too. Went for genuine as am not sure about the smoked or dynamic sweep ones. Personally preference is all.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20240207/00957eee5b1641ec0aade89add1b5bce.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20240207/3588746d9269ad8cc0a9fba495879019.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20240207/eb43707f99304e7e5a8a85c936c35970.jpg)

Another job ticked off the list today...First was a good wash, will polish it a little later but the moss filled side repeater has been replaced! Not too bad in terms of DIY jobs, worst bit was trying not to break the plastic tabs ( then realising once it's off that a few were broken anyway) and getting to the two vertically placed T10 torx.  Other than that gave it a good old clean out and hey presto! Have decided that I'm never gonna get an old car to look and feel new and just to keep plodding on with it. If you were going to tackle this job yourself I'd say go for it! A good pry tool, T10 Torx bit as skinny as you can find and small point nose pliers to remove the electrical connectors is all you need. Polish done! Doesn't look too different in the pictures but much better in the metal. Have Mobile paint repair man coming out next week to look at the rust bubble on the rear arches and to look at the i3 bumper that some knob hit in tesco carpark. I have to rely on karma for that bit of justice. I cannot imagine hitting someone's car and just buggering off..maybe its just me.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20240216/770f3830b3c22e9a56899e27cd5ba834.jpg)

Well...the dent man only wants to work on newish cars with no rust so that is on hold...have decided to treat myself/ Adolf to a Forge Twintercooler, currently hiding it from the wife as she would kill me. Thinking is this is plenty good enough for what it is and current plans, but I can always add an S3 intercooler to improve should the need arise. I dunno, just felt gutted about the body repair quote and spent some of the money set aside...could have bought anything at that moment.  Probably a good thing it's small enough to hide and will make no visible difference to the car! So today is fitting day for the Foge Twintercooler and also going to adjust the coilovers a bit...too many pot holes around here and I am being forced back into work so gonna have to use it a bit more than I wad hoping to. The twintercooler is okay to fit but the cutting of the hoses is a bugger of a job to do! Wish they were pre cut to length ,that would have been lovely! Other than that it is a good opportunity to have a good clean under the car and have a poke about too ready for new tyres and a CV boot next week. Decided to give the front arch liners and under trays a proper good clean up while they were out and the car had a wash too. Just need to find front and rear alloy hubs, wishbones, better calipers, sort the rust, sort the curbed wheel, the headliner, and then I'll settle down a bit! Yesterday was 4 new Pirelli tyres, the cam follower ( came out looking like new anyway apparently) and a bearing too courtesy of Fastfit in Cheshunt. Can't do tyres myself, bad enough on the mountain bike let alone a car and while they had it a few niggles ticked off the list too.

We are now running a stage 1 remap! What a difference too, better throttle response and more oomph. I'll be sure to raise some eyebrows with this, but had it done by Superchips in their March deal...£240 all in with the guy coming to my place of work to do it. Now i know its not rolling road tuned, and i'm sure i could possibly have got another 10BBBHP ( Billy Bullsh*t Brake Horsepower...the kind you find in pubs) from another tuner, however this is a safe map and serves my needs just fine for now. My car is used to take my son to football/swimming, daughter rugby and drive them back from school etc. so didn't want it spikey, deffo no pops and bangs ( why is that even a thing?) and just linear performance and that is what i got. For the money its a good deal from a reputable company with years of experience. Sure they have probably gone through a million owners but i cannot fault what it got from them. James the fitter was friendly and polite, respectful of his surroundings and i'd welcome him back for stage 2 if i keep the car.

I too had a superchips remap done on my car a few years ago now. I wasn't after max power figures I just wanted more oomph in the mid range for overtaking and that's exactly what it provided. It was a really noticeable difference. On the rolling road it made 236bhp with everything else completely standard, but it's the mid range torque that really matters for every day road driving. For the money and convenience I can't fault it.

@Octoparrot (https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=14844) I couldn't agree more, for the money and the overtaking shove it was worth it. True enough i don't have the sticker on the window of some insta-famous tuner but they have been around enough years and must have done thousands of maps over different platforms to know roughly what they are up to. I was almost not going to put who did the map but kinda glad I did now.
