Title: Advise on GTI clutch
Post by: mjmallia on July 25, 2022, 09:11:35 am
Well the GTI has hit 118k miles and still on the original clutch and flywheel.......no issues but the biting point is getting high now.

Changed the wife's Mk5 Golf clutch, bearing with fork last week (1.6 FSI with also 118k miles) as it had a really high biting point and heavy pedal, but kept the original flywheel as looked fine to me without play or much wear.......drives really nice again, with a low biting point, which made me compare it to mine.

Fast forward to mine and planning on doing the LUK clutch with slave release bearing at the weekend BUT unsure if I should change the flywheel also.

I do not drive it hard and do about 3.5k miles a year........or should I change it for peace of mind. The car is a keeper or until it dies and I then go electric.

£177 without or £456 with a new flywheel and bolts??

The more I read, the more it makes sense to replace it at the same time.

For the sake of 400 odd quid, you're better off replacing it with the clutch.  It's peace of mind you've got another 10 years of life in it, rather than waiting for the inevitable and having to drop the gearbox, again   It may feel OK by hand but what your hand can't tell you is how worn out the springs are.

Get this one as it's the stronger S3/6R one - https://www.akstuning.co.uk/shop/home/1152-luk-clutch-flywheel-20tfsi-platform.html

Yeah agree......not too fussed about the wife's Mk5 as it goes nowhere fast and will be selling it soon after having it 15 years now.

The thing with my GTI (2005) flywheel is it shows two variants 15mm and 17mm clearance......mine being the 17mm version going on chassis number and assume the S3 kit is 15mm being later engines

Anyone know the torque specs for the flywheel out of curiosity?

I recall it being 60Nm plus 90 degrees

Sounds about right on the torque specs but I'd check with AKS Tuning on the flywheel as they don't specify engine type in the link!

Well I finally attacked the job today (Saturday) OMG how heavy is the box 🥴  I did my wife's 1.6fsi the other week and that box was a lot lighter.

The clutch was shot and the flywheel not far off, so glad I did it all

A few hundred miles of bedding in to come, but wow what a difference

Grand job sir, and yeah, it's definitely a weighty chunk that gearbox.

Make sure you do lots, and I mean LOTs of downshifts through the gears otherwise the clutch can start juddering if it's babied too much  :happy2:
