Title: Matt's Steel Grey 5door GTI
Post by: FrameSet on November 24, 2015, 05:22:37 pm
Hi all.

Some of you may have seen my thread on my silver TDI. Well, after owning both that and a 1.4 mk5 before hand I decided it was time to finally bite the bullet and get myself a GTI  :jumpmove: (a difficult task at 19 years old)!

I excitedly picked it up on Sunday after a couple of viewings and a test drive. It's a 55 plate gti with good service history, and only 2 previous owners, the last of which was a lady for the past 7 years. It's on 109,000 but feels tighter than my tdi, which was a year older and had only done 86.

Heres the spec:

2005
5door
steel grey
heated leather
arm rest
6cd changer
18 alloys (were polished)
axx engine.
and what i believe to be the convince pack (heated mirrors, auto lights etc).
Also has Goodyear efficientgrip  tyres all round

And here's a few mods for the near future:

rev g DV
cam follower

pcv replacement
cam chain and tensioner replacement
new centre caps
3d or mk6 rear badge
stubby aerial
new number plates
led plate lights
upgrade headlight bulbs
Edition 30/ r32 rear lights
Depo/Hella Xenon style headlights
interior led bulbs
new door grabs
floor mats
chrome tipped switches
MFD2 headunit
vw bottle opener for cup holder
gti seat lever inserts
remap
exhaust system
induction kit (Ramair)
black coolant and washer caps
lower- probably just springs (H&R springs)
wheel spacers
smooth front grill

It drives well and has had almost a grand spent on it in July including cam belt, water pump, rear shocks... the list goes on.
Everything seems to work bar the key fob unlocking and locking the drivers door (does all the rest)! Im pretty certain it needs a new DV so will probably order a Revision G from awesomegti this week, perhaps along with a cam follower.

Enough blabbing for now; here she is after a wash and wax today:

For its age the car's in pretty good nick, however I've got some work to do:

And the wheels, which were refurbished just before I bought the car (shame they were painted and not re-polished).
.. i think I've got a slow puncture!

Already set about cleaning the exhausts today, not very successful but it was only 5 minutes work so didn't expect great results.
Before:

Rev G diverter valve. Will hopefully get it fitted along with a 3D rear badge tomorrow.
Also ordered a pair of oem rubber mats for the front from the stealers.

Very impressed with Awesomegti, ordered yesterday afternoon and it arrived today! (And its Black Friday)!

Woah. I might have to pull my arch liner off lol.

I like your colour combination of the car and wheels. Pretty sure the wheels are a slight darker shade

The wheels do look ever so darker than standard! I'm looking to get my monzas resprayed at some point as I ruined one the other week! How on earth did you get insurance at 19?! I have the 1.4 TSI and I struggled even getting a quote and I'm 22, in the end I went with some random insurance company no one has ever heard of for about 1400- I suppose my 3 points didn't help all to much for speeding but still!

Some nice additions there! How difficult was it to fit the revision G div?

Cheers! Was fairly easy apart from i dropped a screw and took about 20 minutes to find it! Its a bit fiddly and i could only get 2 clicks out of my ratchet to undo two of the three allen screws but got there in  the end! After a couple of drives it is much much quicker and has a nice blow off noise when changing gear

Im on a multi car policy with my brother and sister (both are older than me). It was about 2 grand a year when i had my tdi but has gone up about a grand..Which i can just about manage if i work hard! But totally worth it  :driver:

Cheers :) I'll have to check mine every week then as I live on a farm! I should imagine the passenger side would be worse as it's always against the verge/ ditch!

Went to pick up my OEM floor mats today so thought I had better tackle the disgusting foot wells. Should've taken some before pictures but they look okay for now.

She's almost on 110,000 so still under average!

I got that keyring when I had my tdi mapped there. I'm about 45 mins from AMD

Got a few more goodies in the post this week :) led plate lights, carpet floor mats, pressed plates and plate holders! I'm yet to put the front plate on, half tempted to go down the magnetic route. Excuse the state of the car, i did wash it last weekend

I had the same trouble with replacement led bulbs on my tdi so opted for these which are whole light units, just plug and play: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/381197538468?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

Car went off to have the door lock issue fixed today (drivers door wouldn't lock or unlock on the button). All solved and they even fixed my wing mirror as there was no electrics going to it which meant no heat and no adjustment :( all fixed now! Also gave it a well deserved clean before hand. And to top it all off, easily averaged 30 mpg to and from the garage!! Small post Christmas update.

Got this for free so set about cleaning it up.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.tapatalk-cdn.com%2F15%2F12%2F30%2F41f0344cc0e03bac6d81eabf6e45bc68.jpg&hash=3dd7b36bd16946a942631f188610c98db587c25e)
It has been outside for a while and was covered in hay so I had my doubts it would work!
One cone has a hole and crack in it so I'm running it with just one working for the mean time.

So got that installed in the boot yesterday with the help of a friend. Also bought a mfd2 off my brother so we put that in at the same time!
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.tapatalk-cdn.com%2F15%2F12%2F30%2Fc69759a99f971b821692c1f7eda12b4d.jpg&hash=9b70505dd14e898b57de2e4799497c71a0866e85)

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.tapatalk-cdn.com%2F15%2F12%2F30%2F03874f6f2f7ab0aa0a9b09b3105394dd.jpg&hash=bcdb05f7dd3113e6a6999296f60561a6a5e9fe1c)

Really tidies up the dash, looks much better!
However, one question... Where should I put the satnav antenna? It's magnetic so I've just stuck it on the back of the headunit, but won't this play havoc with the radio? I've not properly tested it yet but it's where I was told to put it on another forum!

Between the rain I've also managed to clean and treat the front seats. They're a little more matte now and nice to know they're protected! (https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.tapatalk-cdn.com%2F15%2F12%2F30%2F02add145755c23daca7346ee3fb34d71.jpg&hash=4b366a19772118dbeac1393494a920f2a8a816ac)

I'll have another go when it's a little warmer!

And finally, the one negative! Was driving along the other evening when this happened:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.tapatalk-cdn.com%2F15%2F12%2F30%2F765193ab75001a83349c9932af8ebdf3.jpg&hash=45962d7abd02d295745ae57f665f03e3bbd04c29)
The trip screen just went blank. It's since been fine but I've since read about it and it seems the lcd's go bad. However most say it's when they've been in heat or the sun. Neither of which are about at the moment!
Anyway, it has only happened the once so fingers crossed!

Thanks for looking!

Matt.

I recently fitted the Kenwood DNX and I was also thinking about the magnetic sat nav antenna, ended up leading it to the dash as I assume magnets and electrics inside the head unit wouldnt mix well, used a bit of M3 double sided tape instead

Another update:

Took a trip to Wales for a few days. Some lovely roads and brilliant scenery. But as I'm sure you're already imagining... It was raining.. A lot! The car ran brilliantly, 35+ mpg's on the motorway there and back.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fuploads.tapatalk-cdn.com%2F20160117%2F9dcf39c9597e219801270ff26252e268.jpg&hash=96f7536b67166ce163a6a85f5d6a51e237001960)

It needed a wash once I got home!
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fuploads.tapatalk-cdn.com%2F20160117%2Fc16beb513434ce6a9f424d7950a083f7.jpg&hash=050a001f95853a7f453a824186690354aee9d667)

On returning home I found a new roof aerial seal from the postie so got that on today. However it's not gone down properly, may have to use some sort of sealant  :scared: (anyone replaced one of these before?)

Also got a set of heko wind deflectors. I've had these on my 2 previous golfs and I'm still not sure if i really like them! Somehow I managed to break the end off one of the rear deflectors  :ashamed:  So two more are on order.

On another note, I bought some iron-X and tried it out cleaning my alloys from the TDI. And wow, this stuff is good.

Changed the coolant temp sensor this morning. Car hasn't been getting up to temperature (90 degrees) unless driving hard or stationary.
New sensor in and no change! If anything, seemed to stay even colder than before!

Any ideas? New thermostat?

Here's the old sensor:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fuploads.tapatalk-cdn.com%2F20160126%2F938dba9f5e25cb15568510e94248b6bc.jpg&hash=31b64a5035024f3ef28f99b3be76378e2c21408e)

Also going to change the oil soon, seems most go for castrol edge or quantum so I'll see what I can find!

Does it
A) get up to 90 degrees after a long time?
B) stay at 90 degrees once it does reach 90 (if it does at all)
C) not reach 90 degrees at all and floats around between 50 - 70

Do you have an OBD reader or access to VCDS?

A bit of a mixture. It will reach 90 but only if left to idle (i.e. sat at traffic lights or parked)
but say driving at 60 in 6th on an A road it will sit somewhere between 50-70 as you said. Then if i am to get home and leave it running it will get back to 90 again.

Unfortunately I don't have access to VCDS but might take it into VW Auiditech as they are close to me.

Cant recommend VWauditech enough, theyre great guys. I personally think its your main stat. If you have a DSG then you will have three stats in total. One main and two inlines. The main regulates the temperature overall, the two inlines simply help it to get to temp quickly when you start the car. If you have a manual then you only have two; main and one inline.

It will be roughly 225 including parts and labour to change the main stat alone. See what they say. I have VCDS if you need it in the future

Interesting, thanks. Im manual so a little more simple. I should think its worth doing. Doesn't seem to affect the car but i don't like not knowing. Where about are you if you don't mind me asking?! Could come in handy one day  :happy2:

When I bought mine the temp needle sit in the correct place 90ºC. Later I bought a PolarFIS Adv. and noticed the engine temp only reached 74ºC, right the temp that makes the needle reach the 90ºC. The engine temp only reached 90ºC when sitting in traffic for a while.

Since my Ed. 30 is a MY08 it only has 2 stats, a main and a DSG. I made a full mechanical overall and my mechanic found that the DSG stat was malfunctioning.

Hi guys.

Ive been thinking about getting an induction kit for the GTI. Not really for any sort of performance benefit as I'm not even stage 1 yet and exhaust is all stock (for now). So really just after the noise. So looking at a ramair. Seen quite a few of you go for the oversize (90mm) kit even on K03's. What would be better, this or the 70mm kit? Prefer the look of the 70 as theres not jubilee clips everywhere and its cheaper, but so many seem to go for the 90?!

Either this or some lowering springs

Cheers

Not as yet. Will probably take it into VWauditech this week or next. Fairly sure it will need a new stat but its difficult to part with the cash when the car still drives up to road fine everyday!

Just mind that a cold engine will run a richer combustion, increasing the oil gases returning to the manifold, which in turn will fill your inlet valves of gunk with time.

When I bought my Ed. 30 the car had the temp gauge at 90ºC, but when I fitted a PolarFIS Adv. I noticed the engine in fact was running at 74-75ºC, just enough for the needle to sit at 90ºC. With 35k miles I had my inlet valves pretty nasty.

Unless you have the R-Tech PCV delete kit fitted it will happen to yours too.

Just changed the cam follower. Had a pop at it a few days ago without realising the earlier models have the dreaded banjo bolt. So, without the correct tools there was nothing I could do!
However you may laugh at my makeshift spanner/bit/ electrical tape tool but it worked!

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fuploads.tapatalk-cdn.com%2F20160204%2Feeed32ebad066b34e84b8a4ee590c08f.jpg&hash=e3336caecf153c19b5c85767cff05da14be13a00)

I was expecting it to be much more worn but I guess 7 years of lady ownership wasn't too harsh on the little cam follower.
So, old one out and popped in the fresh one along with the new seal and bolts.

Why did you add tape to the toque , so you could apply more pressure? Where did you get the Cam Follower kit? I've seen one on Awesome GTI and I've been meaning to change it myself.

The tape was just to stop the star bit from fallout out the ring on the 10mm spanner. If you have a ratchet spanner with a closed side you'll be laughing but this worked. I ordered mine from Awesome. Worth doing, from what I've read it can save pricey damage from occurring. Also i like doing stuff like this myself so i know how it all works!

Got the Ramair induction kit fitted today. Went for the standard opposed to the oversized kit. Pretty straight forward and similar to the revo on my mates car that we fitted. Sounds nice and can get a little flutter at low speeds!

Excuse the state of the bay. And I have since removed the engine cover mounts and am working on the oil filler neck.

And my friends Revo for a comparison:

Small update. Got the car booked in to have a stat changed (if that's the problem) next Tuesday.
Also got black coolant and washer caps, makes the bay look 10x better imo.

And clocked over to 113k yesterday. Ignore the low mpg, I had just started my journey!

Had the car in at VWauditec today to sort the stat problem. Turns out it's going to be a bigger job than they thought so going in next Tuesday!

Had a spare half hour on the weekend so took the passenger side arch liner out to give it a clean. Was a lot less crap in there compared to the drivers side.

Car went into VWAudiTec again today. Brilliant service. Had the stat and housing changed and that problem is all solved!   ...
However.. On changing the stat they did unveil another issue; I had previously noticed that the drivers side headlight was secured with a zip-tie. :scared:  I had assumed the previous driver had just hit a pheasant or something of the sort as i could see no further damage and everything seem kosher. But it turns out the front panel and bracket that mounts the headlight need replacing too. Decided against having it done today as i need the car and I'm planning on buying some Depo xenon headlights anyway.

Hey ho, you live and learn. Should've had a closer look before buying!  :signLOL:

Few more little mods done to the golf.

Got some chrome tipped switches and a cherry hazard button from eBay and set about fitting them. Still yet to do the fuel cap switch as its a door card off job!

And today I've tried out some LED sidelights. Ended up putting the standard ones back in as they just didn't look right against the yellowy headlights! I'll keep them for when I get some hella xenons!

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fuploads.tapatalk-cdn.com%2F20160406%2F55f0d3265bc731fa6a5708d35cd23c84.jpg&hash=5afc31fee43ad36bcc754af8d1aa909213384e74)

Other than this I'm just racking up the miles and trying to keep her clean. After the next wash I'll try and get all the trim and bumpers treated and I've got a gtechniq glass kit to put to use.

One one small issue. The car has gone into a sort of 'limp mode' three times. No warnings or obvious causes but it eventually springs back into life after a few minutes of driving with what seems like a 1.0L under the bonnet!
Hopefully it's just a little glitch, can't find too many threads relating to this but i may check all the plugs and change the pcv anyway.

Thanks for reading!

Hi mate. just bought a mk5 golf tdi that has the same wheels (Monza) . Mine are 18 inch with 225/40/18 tyres. Can you tell me if you have the same and are they on standard springs? The reason I ask is I need to change the springs to standard and I am happy with the gap spacings as its my everyday car. Thanks

Just a quick video showing the grill after one coat of autoglym bumper and trim gel.
Note: this was post snowfoam and pre wash so ignore the poor beading/ sheeting on the paintwork!

And after its wash yesterday, this was the state of it this morning:

Another update on the gti,

I got the windscreen sealed with the Gtechniq kit a couple of months ago; what a difference! Don't need to use wipers above 50mph in the rain!

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fuploads.tapatalk-cdn.com%2F20160616%2Fa80eea5e534f7de734102fc2ad87cdde.jpg&hash=4f341786c0145847dd35ed9866c0a24f8164630d)

Noticed one of my fogs has cracked

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fuploads.tapatalk-cdn.com%2F20160616%2Fa564a64c1f8a8cc9740a23c2af1ba1aa.jpg&hash=62d8ec26ade240706487e86a7d126566c7db3408)

And I've changed the pcv valve. Old one was caked in oily crap!

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fuploads.tapatalk-cdn.com%2F20160616%2F0d51d6739b968a9951d20d47547dafac.jpg&hash=5db4340f1dddd6a298cd4f4f5aa6a96dc6b7f0da)

However this has not muffled the 'derv tickover' so a new camchain and tensioner will have to go in.

Got a quote from VWAuiditec for £404 inc vat and labour.

I've also bought some magnets for the front plate so will try and get that done soon!

Other than that it's due a service in 2k miles and is in need of a polish and wax... But it keeps raining!

What oil do guys recommend?
And what plugs as they must be due a change?

Thanks for looking!

Great price on the cam chain tensioner, and VWauditec are good guys. Looks good, although your new PCV will be just as oily in a day or two :)

Thought I'd try out a magnetic front plate after seeing marka87uk's thread.

Fairly straight forward, the hardest part was removing the old plate from the plinth!

Started by cleaning both the front and backside of the grill and wiping over where the magnets would sit with some white spirit.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fuploads.tapatalk-cdn.com%2F20160621%2F744871b91f476346303884bd53a7a95e.jpg&hash=2f0f91d9708df8bf2cc80455cd84563fd48a7311)

Here's everything I used:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fuploads.tapatalk-cdn.com%2F20160621%2F401b442cbbde4b334cd79926e1610ac2.jpg&hash=2c6497b0e711f7b68615325d4f21566f340a938a)
Ignore the plate surround, I just put the magnets on there to stop them sticking together!

Next I roughly measured the gaps and glued the magnets onto the plate. (With araldite)

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fuploads.tapatalk-cdn.com%2F20160621%2F91adb85a7c57e891cbd7d3550667170f.jpg&hash=19c3c1895df2ce85b0f38855d3151fb020ae4a6f)

Then covered with gaffer tape (hopefully this will last  )

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fuploads.tapatalk-cdn.com%2F20160621%2F8f7ab8f5265bbac78a82579f2a69fb8f.jpg&hash=05c9865ccaeeab063dd75c2255514682be498deb)

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fuploads.tapatalk-cdn.com%2F20160621%2F503ff61c74612d36036a94d29336a083.jpg&hash=2539aa65dda9302005dc17a7469703b55942f535)

And once the araldite had dried I simply held the plate up agasint the grill and let the remaining magnets fall (quite quickly) onto the back of the grill.

Next was to individually remove each magnet and stick back on. Some more tape, and we were there!

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fuploads.tapatalk-cdn.com%2F20160621%2F96c828d23153ac6b0f6c81132c978e57.jpg&hash=66832438e20922ac5ad35c0a37165417463a55d2)

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fuploads.tapatalk-cdn.com%2F20160621%2F77b12577b205c8a329f34c0b7e239c13.jpg&hash=0359685e1bd9921ec6887918a290ffb12e9516bf)

I'm not sure how long it will last or what speeds it will endure but it's something I wanted to try!
In hindsight I would've put the end magnets closer to the end of the plate to curve it round the grill a bit more.

Here's the link to Mark's thread: http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,24323.15.html

You may have also noticed I wrapped the front badge (badly).. Let's just say it looks good from a distance!

Cheers!

Well guys and gals,

Just picked the car up from VWAudiTec after having the cam chain and tensioner changed. It was in for two days rather than one as the car put up a bit of a fight and broke their locking tool

Anyway, what a difference! Was sat at a set of traffic lights on the way home and had to check the car was actually running! It's so quiet now! No more derv sounding tickover

Again, very good service from VWAudiTec. Now I need to scrape some cash together for a service!

Since the last update I've serviced the car; filling her up with some fresh Castrol Edge. :drinking:  I'm still yet to change the fuel filter but it seems vw think it shouldn't be a serviceable part! I'll be doing it anyway!

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fuploads.tapatalk-cdn.com%2F20160918%2F808c793fca8ca64c4772efd1f99edd93.jpg&hash=7666ad2d32a475f484f26347f351f9bcf726d9d2)

I also got a can of cheap spray paint and went over the wheel nut covers to tidy them up. Looks much better!

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fuploads.tapatalk-cdn.com%2F20160918%2Fa08ac5c7586cacabfa5b2a6dc061dade.jpg&hash=34493aa9d0839c5f98e7f88b904355d2cc5be004)

One weekend I noticed a Buldge in one of the front tyres.  Ordered two eagle asymmetric 3's and had them changed

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fuploads.tapatalk-cdn.com%2F20160918%2F4df831fe0cf78e86ac90a1b3dac8c2bb.jpg&hash=80c3aa0b66d92be1643ab128313445f711adc5ab)

The tyre shop insisted it needed an alignment while I was there so had it done.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fuploads.tapatalk-cdn.com%2F20160918%2Fe93f98f5f23207bf59861c5ba7db80dd.jpg&hash=3e79d2a316fcd5e82d446ec0327462ad2ea5ecaa)

Other than that I've just been sorting out some of the smaller issues.

Restored my headlights :

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fuploads.tapatalk-cdn.com%2F20160918%2F9ee8b9283a0fe2a145a1d4ed55d7bdc6.jpg&hash=707d2142a71b62d6a7ce33696328c60b9e30ed49)

I used the Autoglym kit and am happy with the results. It was my first attempt and by no means a perfect job but they're better.

Next I wrapped the fogs. I'm not sure I like it really. Only did it as one has a big hole in it so the vinyl will keep the water out!

Grills were all removed, cleaned and coated with Autoglym bumper and trim gel

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fuploads.tapatalk-cdn.com%2F20160918%2F5f1f4d2e518915df4530d652a2c3f369.jpg&hash=2cc1b39dd58e257b62c92df4d90d4baf627ffdba)
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fuploads.tapatalk-cdn.com%2F20160918%2F377cd3e22163b36ea38c6608a8f848f1.jpg&hash=540fa83647222980c89be6acd630d19718bc32e6)

Very easy to remove the fog light units but I lost all patience with the wrap in the end and they're full of air bubbles and creases!  :ashamed:

And finally, I ordered a 'magic eraser' and had a go at my very shiny steering wheel. I didn't do a before shot but it came up much more matte/ new looking!

I did however coat it with Autoglym leather conditioner which restored some shine.  :sad1:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fuploads.tapatalk-cdn.com%2F20160918%2Fbe2802107c52a62c27539c839d764284.jpg&hash=11b0a44c3484e2abe7681e6ff3aa331ff069752f)

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fuploads.tapatalk-cdn.com%2F20160918%2F19c4ef58188ab790df4393b1d4e4648f.jpg&hash=0d3e107b401f9c965110adc83ca7c6140e3d3ce5)

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fuploads.tapatalk-cdn.com%2F20160918%2F812d4879ea9d056ba2a58cac00840746.jpg&hash=645b894f1d4671766338f0d5e330e917da0214fc)

If anyone is going to try this all I would say is be very gentle! I barley dragged the eraser/ sponge over the steering wheel (I didn't use any force). It seems a very abrasive product!

Also had a go at the gear knob.

I've also taken off the magnetic front plate and put the plinth and my pressed plate on.

Oh, and I got this for a laugh

Nice work there buddy.

I have to ask, where you from?  I recognize a lot of the back ground in some of your pics. I think we live in the same town that recently became a city.

We do!  I was looking through your thread the other day and thought it was Hylands house behind the cars in your pics?

Can't say I've seen you about on the road yet! I'm only a few miles away from town (city)!

I'm that side of the town so now doubt we'll eye ball each other soon. Or theres always the possibility of a meet if you fancy?  Line them up for a couple of pics. :happy2:

On another note, what option did you go with for the boot catch? Mines in need of replacement and I dont know to go with the mk6 or restore the current back plate and attach the mk4 badge.

I am too, between Writtle and Ongar.  :happy2: Surprised we haven't crossed paths! I'm often in convoy with a laser blue 3 door around town  :happy2: Im sure we'd be up for a meet. I went for a 3d badge from a newer mk5. It's a straight swap but does stick out a little. If i and the choice now, i'd go for a mk6. Not sure if its as simple to fit, but it seems a popular mod so can't be too difficult

Excellent work buddy.

Loving the reflection shots, car looks great.

I got myself a magic spring after seeing your results and i have to say the results are amazing. I now have a nice matt finish on the steering wheel. Will make it part of the cleaning ritual.  Although though I have to say I was horrified and embarrassed at how mch dirt was left on the spong  :ashamed:

I'm going to have another go on the steering wheel with mine. Once I treated it with conditioner it got it's shine straight back  :sad1: Just have to be careful I don't damage the leather!

I've almost lost touch with the GTI recently.
Haven't had much to spend on it and keeping it clean in this weather (especially on a farm) is impossible.

However it hasn't had any issues and I did have a few 'spirited' drives over the weekend which made me realise how good these cars really are.  :driver:

So, after an evening scanning through various builds on the forum I've got the bug again! Needless to say after Christmas I still don't have the budget though!

Either an exhaust, map or h&r springs will be next!

Finally, a couple of weeks ago a mate an I changed our fuel filters. Bit of a bugger to get the hoses off as I doubt they had ever been changed. But, once we had done one we knew how hard we had to pull, push and persuade with the next one! Here's what was in my filter:

Have been looking at how to make the GTI a little louder without spending shed loads on a cat back or sports cat/ downpipe. Decided to knock out the precat after reading a few threads about it. Pretty straight forward job besides the exhaust clamp nuts being rusted beyond belief. got the angle grinder out in the end and found some new clamps!

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fuploads.tapatalk-cdn.com%2F20170108%2F5fd374d72d9c7de694170e7f61b4c165.jpg&hash=cab0cdc0053cfa8c05d7d94658f3a9b46c1009c5)

Would've been much easier on a lift but managed with the axle stands!

Can't say the car sounds any different what so ever (which I didn't really expect) but defiantly feels like it picks up quicker when you floor it.  :driver:

I think a cat back might be in order. Can't justify spending £1000 on a TBE just yet as I don't really plan on going beyond a stage 1 anyway.

As we were in the workshop my mate and I also changed the crank angle sensor (i think!) on his GTI. The car wouldn't go above 4000rpm and had a terrible idle. Seemed like a misfire but after changing the coil packs and plugs we found that this sensor was the problem! All back together and working now though!  :drinking:

Also gave mine a long awaited bath today!

The rust on the wings has got worse over winter too despite coating them in loads of wax. :sad1:  May have to get them sprayed soon!

Oh and I have just payed for my personalised plate!  :jumping: Undecided if I'll go with pressed plates or the gel ones this time around, any ideas or pictures welcome to help me decide!

I would prefer mine to be diamond cut (standard) but they were refurbed before I bought it :( it seems fairly costly to get done otherwise I would be on it!

Go to VW and say its a common fault on the mk5 and they all are rusting & get them replaced for free! That's what i did with no questions asked. Saves you spending money you may not have to!  :happy2:

I had got mine done last year! Said to me they were doing them as so many have had the problem and its well documented that they have!
May as well try your luck, whats the worst that can happen? Hopefully save you some money! Just say you know many have got replaced and its the foam on the inside of the wing that rusts them.  :happy2:

However as I've got a shorter front plate I need to do something about the grill as I'm not running the plinth.

Took a drive up to my local body shop but they wanted £100-200 to fill the holes in the grill and respray it.

Anyone tried one of the eBay grills? Or know how much VW charge for a us spec (with no holes)?

Or of a body shop in Essex that will do it for £50?!

Cheers, Matt.

The rear private plate arrived today so didn't waste anytime getting it on.

Have ordered an eBay replacement smooth grill for £30 and will probably just sticky pad the new short plate to it. I've tried magnets before but found they marked the grill, may go with suction cups in the future!

For now I'm running it like this until the new grill arrives

Have had the plates on for a little while now. Ended up buying an eBay smooth grill for £30ish. Build quality and fit is good but it had a feel blemishes.

I need to do some tweaking to get the gti badge to sit square but otherwise I'm happy with it. Glad I went for a short plate. I mounted it lower than standard. Wanting to show off some of the smooth grill without covering up too much of the lower open grill.

Car is looking awesome !  :happy2:
I too purchased the smooth grille from ebay and had almost identical blemishes to the ones you have, informed them and they refunded me and let me keep the grill. Can't say fairer than that

Hey folks, few updates for the GTI.

Firstly, as Ryan suggested I gave my local stealers a call regarding the rusty wings. Spoke to Alan at Inchcape Chelmsford who was a very helpful chap. Took the car in for a look over and depth testing (of the paint) and hopefully I'll be in for some new wings. (Fingers crossed)!

Secondly, got a set of H&R lowering springs put on yesterday at Chelmsford Autos. Have been on the verge of ordering them myself for months but without spring compressors I didn't feel confident changing them myself. All in now with new top mounts and looking/ feeling good!

Will update again after a week or so of driving. I've also taken before and after height measurements so I'll post them once it's settled!

Once it's clean I'll get some pictures with the big camera!

Big thanks to Will at Chelmsford Autos for sorting/ fitting them!

Also had to replace my Karcher K2 that died so went for the more superior k4.

Thought I'd give it a blast so took a wheel off and went to town with ironX, wheel cleaner and various brushes. There's loads of wheel weight sticky residue on the wheels that I can't get off though. It's by no means perfect but looks better for a quick clean and coat of Poorboys wheel sealant!

The ride height will settle a bit more in a few months. Hope you like them with the stock dampers but I'd recommend getting better ones like Bilstein B8 or Koni Sport in the future if you keep the car.

Well, dropped the car off at Inchcape VW today for its new wings. Very pleased to be having them done FOC even though the car is 12 years old. I just hope the paint match is spot on.. Fingers crossed!

Also enjoying the H and R springs. Very slightly stiffer with normal driving but hardly noticeable. The car really does feel stiffer around the corners when driving a little harder.

Otherwise the car is running great.

Picked up the car from Inchape VW this morning. Brilliant job and service. Very happy with the new wings!

They seemed to have blended the new paint or something into the drivers door as the key mark has been slightly filled/painted.. (I don't know a thing about painting so could be wrong)!

However I now need to get the rusty sill and rest of the key mark sorted!

Very worth while giving your local VW dealers a call if yours are rusty, even if your cars over 10 years old!

Few more updates to the GTI recently.

Took the car on a bit of a road trip to Yorkshire and County Durham in early May. The car was faultless and found some lovely roads!

Most of them were twisties but this straight was fun!

Then last month I tried on some 20mm spacers on the rear from my friends Jetta to see what improvement they'd have on the stance.

I think a set of 15's would be perfect and 10 in the front!

Next up was one piece of bad news. Although all good at the same time (i got a fresh windscreen)!

Some of or local back roads have been stone chipped recently (hate that stuff!) and an oncoming car flicked a stone up at the windscreen. 100 yards down the road a chip turned into a 12" crack. Booked up through Autoglass Sunday evening and had a new one in early afternoon on Monday! Can't fault them!

Sunday 02/07/17 I gave the car an oil and filter change, filled up with the finest Castrol Edge.

Just a note of the mileage for myself!

Otherwise it's just been maintenance washes and tidying up little bits. I'm hoping to have a go at a 2 stage DA polish soon to bring some depth back to the paintwork and remove the swirls.

Sometimes I forget I'm not driving a tractor!

Today I gave the drivers side brake/hubs a quick paint. Had some Reflex silver from my old TDI so used that. It probably won't stand the heat but it'l be interesting to see. I need to do the edge of the discs too now.. and the calipers... and the stone shields... it never ends!

What do you guys think to the tyre pen? I feel it's a bit too racecar for an almost stock gti but we'll see!

Thanks for looking,
Matt.

Looks great! All the work on the hubs, brakes, & wheels really make the car look OEM fresh...

Sorry, but it's a no from me on the tyre pen though!
