Title: Cambelt Change
Post by: Jons1001 on April 24, 2024, 03:50:46 pm
Any opinions on whether this kit would be ok to use rather than genuine?

Can't see any issues - personally I went with Gates.

If you have a way of getting from TPS the genuine cambelt kits come out very reasonable!

I would never buy from autodoc again, they have a practice of sending out a totally different brand than ordered after you've placed the order - calling it an "upgrade" when really it's their own cheap brand stuff. Happened to me and I googled it to find it's really standard practice.  I did get my money back in the end but it was a total ball ache.

Cheers all, unfortunately don't have a contact for TPS. I will look into Gates as i've heard them mentioned before. Is there anything else i need bolts etc. or does the Cambelt kit usually cover everything needed?

How about bolts for the crank pulley and engine mount? Renew the alternator belt as well? Anti-freeze to replace the coolant?

Good shout on the Alternator belt, looking through paperwork previous owner did this at the last cambelt change so will do it again. Don't suppose you know which bolts I would need?

Get the Continental kit if genuine is a stretch.  Conti make the belts for VW anyway, and the Conti aftermarket kit also uses the genuine INA idler pulleys and Conti water pump.

What Bosch use is anyone's guess.

Just to update I rang tps and they said the price for the timing belt was £212 plus Vat and then other £68 plus Vat for the waterpump  :surprised:

VW main dealer on ebay said they can do the whole kit for £250 Inc Vat.
