Title: Four wheel allignment

Hi, I took my mk5 golf for a four wheel allignment as my rear tyres were wearing a lot on the inside after getting new tyres. The first shop told me they couldn't do it as the bolt had seized. The second shop I took it to told me the bolt had seized and due to the age of car they would need to cut through the bolt (I'm not sure which bolt this is don't know much about it) and due to this the arms and all bushes on rear need to be replaced which I got a quote for £600. I thought this was too expensive due to the value of the car.

Has anyone had this before and how much did it cost? Also do the arms and bushes all need to be replaced and the bolt cut through?

Had something similar recently, ended up replacing the bolts N bushes as the arms where fine. Not had the bill in yet but the garage said it’d be no more than £300, this doesn’t include the price for wheel alignment as it was done at another garage.

When I had my mk5 done the bolts were solid but a little heat did the trick adjustment done

I know these can seize on the back. Cost is £7 quid though.

I know a garage you can trust can be difficult to find but I agree with them here. Any bolts under there have lived in a nasty place for the last 10+ years. Six hundred quid is a lot of money though, perhaps it was a "we really don't want to do it" price.
I replaced nearly everything on the rear on my own but I was well aware it would be a struggle. The only thing I didn't tackle were the camber bolts, they looked like a real PITA. The garage I use did them next time it was there and even they admitted it was a nasty job.

Bit of a funny story really now I come to think about it.

Like I say I had done the eccentric (toe) bolts, rear arms, springs, shocks and outer bushes. I noticed the upper camber bolts were nasty so left them alone. I booked the car in a while later to get the CAMBER bolts changed. I had a call to say everything was done and they reeled off a list of what had been changed (did a couple of other bits as well). I asked them why the TOE bolts had been done, there was a pause and I was asked was that not what it was booked in for? I suggested they ask the fitter how come he did not question why they were changing bolts that were about two months old.
I was told they would look into it and got a call back a bit later.
Is there a smiley for egg on the face? :ashamed:. "Oh, er yes the fitter did question why they were changing stuff that looked new" and now they have looked at the job card properly they realised what they had done.
Much apologising later they did the job that they had been asked to do. :grin: Obviously no extra charge to me and I got a couple of things done for free for their mistake.
Car is a B6 Passat by the way, it has the BWA engine so that is why I lurk about on here.

Had same issue recently , although mine has had wrong rear springs fitted before my ownership so I've just had a lowering spring set delivered and I also ordered polu bushes and eccentric bolts as garage said they were tight, all in for bushes and bolts is around £45  cant see why you'd need new arms unless yours have corroded though, gonna change the bolts myself so long as they go in roughly same way as old ones alignment shouldnt be far off plus its gonna have to be redone since I'm changing springs anyway,  600 sounds way over to me so get a few more quotes.

I got the arms from euro, I think they said they did not do just the bushes on their own just as a complete arm. (so how did they get them in the arms)? Can't remember really but they were cheap.
