Title: Auto wipers query.
Post by: JR.303 on January 14, 2020, 07:12:00 pm
I find the auto wipers a bit of a pain and wondered if just a normal intermittant wipe is possible.
The drivers side blade (new Bosch aero) scrapes if it is not peeing down.
If so how?

2nd click up of the wiper stalk should give you intermittent wipe and it's adjustable to.

You can switch the Auto wiper function off with VAG Com I believe. Alternatively unplug the sensor behind the rear view mirror. This should give you adjustable intermittent wipe with the first click.

I thought 2nd click just gave you the slowest of the intermittent wipes and wasnt adjustable?

Thanks, but I just looked through some old posts on here and it's not possible.
Oh well, no car is perfect!

I move the toggle switch on top of the stalk a few clicks along if the auto is being a pain, and it seems to act more like a traditional intermittent wiper.

Also, spray the screen with Rain X or equivalent and importantly wipe the wiper blades with it also and the wipers silently glide across your screen rather satisfyingly beautifully  :happy2:

Yep, that is the only way to revert to traditional intermittent - unplug the rain sensor.

Just to confirm:

Stalk down = 1 wipe, or hold down for max speed.

Stalk up 1 notch = Auto

Stalk up 2 notches = fixed speed 1

Stalk up 3 notches = fixed speed 2

On the MK4 you could replace the auto relay with a normal one and get basic intermittent.  On the MK5 they did away with that and the wiper has a controller built into the motor housing, so no such relay exists sadly.

TBH, I find the auto wipers absolutely fine 95% of the time.  If there is any weird or erratic behaviour, has the car had a replacement screen?  Most screen fitters totally bork the gel pack.  If they refit it with loads of air bubbles, you're never going to get proper auto behaviour.  Insist on a replacement sensor/gel pad.  Most just peel the old one off and stick it back on.  As Arnie says, that is "WRONG".

Any good Si02 product will assist in dispelling the water quicker. I use a chemical guys ceramic hydrowax and it’s brilliant to the point I can drive without the wipers on when it’s raining hard as the water beads off sooooo quick

I feel your pain, the auto wipers seem to have a mind of there own in mine.. I got rid of the Bosch blades and fitted valeo ones and gave the windscreen a good deep clean then a coat of rain-ex.

I only have to tap the stalk down manually now and then in light rain now and just stick it on speed 1 if of the motorway or heavier rain

My auto wipers also seem to do their own thing, turning down the sensitivity helped, less false positives - but not wiping in drizzle. I still would rather be with it than without.

After market blades always seem very chunky - not seen any as slim as OEM - how are Valeo ones for heftiness?
