Title: Golf R calipers
Post by: Cozza on September 28, 2019, 08:11:53 am
Hi guys, new to the forum. I have an edition 30 and heading down the stage 2+ route. In preparation for this I have purchased some mk7 golf R calipers, could anyone suggest a good brake and disc combo to go with this set up? and anything else I would need, maybe spacers? I am keeping the rear standard for now but the pads need doing, again any suggestions what pads I should stick in the rear? Oem or go uprated? Thanks in advance! I apologise if this has been covered before.

I’ve just fitted MK7 R calipers and oem discs/pads as had ko4 conversion. Got the pads and discs as part of the deal and they’d only done 18k. They work fine to be honest and the stopping power is brilliant. A tad more pedal travel, but I soon got used to that. I’ve also got a set of 340mm drilled and grooves discs from M-Tech with mintex pads for when the oem set ware out

Thanks for the reply. Are you running R calipers just on the front? And is it pretty much a straight swap? I might get a new set of oem discs and pads to begin with if the stopping power is substantial enough, after all anything is going to be better then the standard brakes I’m currently running

Yes, just the front. The Mk7R Rear Calipers won't fit as they have the electronic handbrake set up. Fronts are a direct swap. Dont bother with the larger dust shields as the OE MK5 are fine. Cheap conversion and will give you plenty stopping power

I use OEM 340mm Clubsport S discs and OEM pads.  At the back I've got recent OEM calipers and pads. That little lot works great with a good pedal.

Initially I had a crap pedal after easi-bleeding it at home, but a dealer bleed and flush through restored the pedal.  There's more than enough stopping power and warp resistance for the road.  For track use it's probably worth using the Clubsport S pads or something from the aftermarket.

Thanks for all the input guys. I’m thinking of going for a set of new GTI performance pack calipers (same as golf R I believe). They come with what I presume are oem pads, along with this I’ve found some hel conversion brake lines, also some motul rbf 600 racing brake fluid. Only thing is I can’t seem to find any oem discs? if anyone could link me some that would be much appreciated. Not planning on taking the car on track anytime soon, just looking for a substantial fast road set up for the time being.
