Title: rob_e's CW vRS - return to stock :(
Post by: rob_e on March 23, 2012, 10:03:13 am
Just joined up on the forum, thought i'd post a "hello".

I'm an ex-mk5 GTI owner ('07 Blue Graphite 5 door) forced to get something bigger due to increasing size of the family.  I'm now running a 2010 Octavia vRS in Candy White. ** Update**  that 2010 car is now sold, replacement on p2 is another candy white vRS, 2013MY car reg'd Dec 2012.**

Factory fit I have; xenons, heated seats, parking bleepers, sunset glass, mdi, light assistant and maxidot.

I had a set of Eibachs and Koni FSD but junked these to get some weitec gt coilovers.

The car has a bunch of minor cosmetic tweaks and is currently a set of BBS RD256 in satin black.

I write a blog on the car on Pistonheads; here: http://www.pistonheads.com/members/showcar.asp?carId=115360

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm8.staticflickr.com%2F7270%2F6851565144_1cf9895230_b.jpg&hash=88941601b09bb4f365ca3444e795b21f50fb172a)

***** UPDATE ******

This 2010 vRS has now gone, and been replaced with another very similar 2012 (MY2013) vRS, see page 2.  The new car has a few different mods, including bilstein b16, OE MFSW and Columbus Nav, autotech rARB, TT wishbones, Neuspeed RSe07 wheels..

Cheers Mike.

Just to add, I've got a WALK and Autotech rear ARB to go on the car, plus a few other things in the pipeline..

Some great cars on here - hopefully I can pick up some good ideas and feedback, plus you guys have a lot more active for sale board so I'm on the look out for a few bits and bobs at the right price.

Yes, also available from the seat accessory catalogue for a Leon.  They originally had "seat sport" embossed on them - that was removed as part of the refurb so they are now nice and smooth.

It's an ideal wheel for an octavia as its 7.5x18" ET51 like a neptune/zenith but only 11.2kg where a neptune is somewhere around 13.5kg, plus it's made by BBS Germany so top quality.

Also very easy to clean!

well, after 2 yrs 10 months and 87k miles I said farewell to my lovely vRS just before christmas.

good news is that the new car is already here, and its a ..  Candy White vRS estate!   Yep, i loved the first one so much I ordered exactly the same again.  Only differences on this one are the black interior (black dash inserts and seats) with red stitching plus I ordered a sunroof on this one.

Full spec:
- Alcantara vRS Sports Upholstery
- Curtain Airbags
- Electric Sunroof
- Heated Front Seats
- Light Assistant with Rain Sensors and Auto Dim Rear View Mirror
- Maixdot Trip Computor
- Mobile Device Interface (ipod)
- Rear Parking Sensors
- Sunset Glass (tinted glass from b pillar back)
- Xenon Headlamps with AFS
- I-Pod connection cable

On the day it arrived, old and new side by side:

This is a very good looking and solid motor. No wonder they're one of the old bills' ride of choice, particularly around here  :happy2:

Very impressed with how well specc'ed the Skoda's come in high trim compared with the Audi's particularly. Yours has loads of kit from factory that I wouldn't have got on an S3 Black Edition  :chicken:

Very nice. Love the interior. What is the reason to purchase almost the same car? Does TT wishbones allow better arch vs wheel better clearence or not?
Title: Re: CW vRS - gone, new car page 2

THe TT Wishbones and ends allow you to dial in negative camber at the front.
Title: Re: CW vRS - gone, new car page 2
Post by: Vasekk on January 11, 2013, 08:58:41 am
I know it add negative camber but i think it does not gain better arch/wheel clearance as camber plates do.

And there is a weight saving too.   :happy2:

"TT arms are about 6mm longer than GTI/A3 ones and TT ball joint have oblong shape holes which provide 6mm more to play around.

TT arms are also 1,8kg each lighter than GTI/A3 ones.

All together TT arm and ball joint give at the minimum set up 1,6° negative camber and at the maximum set up 2,4° of negative camber."

Yep, the Fiscon is great and yes it's a "basic plus".  I had this in my last car and swapped it over.  Excellent piece of kit.

Only downside vs. the OE bluetooth is that the fiscon does not integrate with the voice control feature on the Columbus/RNS510 (unless anyone can correct me?).  For me that's not really a problem as I doubt I'd use that feature anyway, but it might be a consideration for some.

Only slight envious of the Seats, Xenons, tinted glass, Heated seats and curtain bags :signLOL:

Does the mfsw you have the red stitching?

You can have voice control with the fiscon kit, where is your fiscon mic installed?

Hi Eddie

Yes, my MFSW has red stitching.

Re the voice control - my mic is on the A pillar, not in the factory location.  Does that make a difference?

Awesome imported a set for me from the states - took a couple of months but worth the wait.  I looked at importing myself but the shipping was expensive plus you have to add on the import duty too.. so that made it too much £.

Eddie thanks for the price for the voice control but I think I'll hang fire on that for now - I have a big bill coming this week from Alex lol.

No pics of the car with everything fitted up as it was dark by the time Alex had finished and also chucking it down with snow.  Lousy trip back with the weather but got home in one piece thankfully..  It'll be back to AKS hopefully some time next week to get the ride height setup.

Thanks for all your efforts today Alex!

 :happy2:

Next:  TT shifter, MFSW, OEM shark fin antenna.

My car!

Great mods! Looking forward to seeing the neuspeeds on!

Back to AKS again today.

Ride height re-set and RARB re-greased as it was noisy.

Alex also fitted a TT-S short shifter for me, plus my MFSW.  Unfortunately I had the wrong controller so I've got another one on its way tomorrow (thanks EDDIE!).

Alex also fitted my shark antenna and set up a few things on VCDS for me.

Really really nice car.  That interior looks like a nice place to be.  Is that a F/L mfsw with a retrim?

You might be taking that ARB off and re-greasing it a few more times before this year is out...

No retrim needed, its an OE part.

Skoda UK don't offer the MFSW as an option on a manual car for some reason, and they can't even order the part.. BUT the helpful chaps at skodatiele.cz can get one, either with the boggo black stitching or like mine with the red stitch to match the rest of my interior.

I cut some grooves in the bushes in the hope that the grease stays in for longer.

Hi Mark

the bilsteins felt hard as nails to start with (well, compared to my well used weitecs anyway) but it seems to be softening up the more I drive it.  I'm going to reserve judgement until it's fully bedded in -  i'll write some stuff for the blog when i get some miles on it.   Dead easy to adjust the damping - you can get to the adjusters with it sat on the ground, just reach around behind the wheel.  This is not a kit of you want to go "slammed" - my fronts are all the way down and its (guessing) somewhere around -35mm vs stock ride height, or around 340mm from the wheel centre to the top of the arch.  To be fair that's absolutely fine for what i want.  Quality it top notch as you'd expect, powder coated springs, stainless (actually i think they call it triple c coated) damper body etc.

no pics yet of how it sits, i'll get some soon don't worry :)

Little update:

New superpro anti-rollbar bushes to replace the ones that came with my autotech bar.  The autotech bushes were rock hard and completely smooth so they squashed out all of the grease making them noisy.  The replacement bushes are textured on the inside so they retain the grease plus they are a lot more compliant.  Only got 500 miles on them so far but first impressions are great - no more noise!

cheers!  Very pleased with them.  For some reason they look small in the pic but in the metal they look bigger than the OE rims (although they're still 18"s).

Alex @ AKS ordered them for me direct from superpro.

Part numbers: SPF1450-25K (Anti Roll Bar Bush Kit; 2 Bushes, SuperPro Grease) and SPF0984K (Anti Roll Bar Clamp Kit; 2 clamps).  Google "25mm SuperPro Universal Anti Roll/Sway Bar Clamp and Bush Kit".

Also, took a couple of side-on pics this morning showing how the car is stitting now on the new wheels/bilsteins.  It's settled a bit but looks pretty consistent height wise front and back.  Wheel-centre-to-arch measures 335mm front and 340mm rear which is spot on.

Ride on the H&R is very, very nice - better than stock I think.  Much better suited to what I need the car for - it's not a track day weapon for me, more a high mileage gt car.

As ever, Alex did a fantastic job.  Thanks matey.

The Bilsteins were adjustable though weren't they?  I take it these H&Rs are comfier than the Bilsteins were on their softest setting?

Hi mate.
This looks proper purposeful and mean, for a wagon it's completely unexpected. What a swell job you've done.  :driver:

Thanks for the positive comments guys.. I'm very happy with the way this car is turning out.

Janner_Sy;  yes the H&R ride better than the B16's did even on their lowest setting.  TBH with the bilsteins you always have a stiff spring, regardless of what level you set the damping.  If you do track days and don't do a massive road mileage then you could live with them and they'd be awesome on track I'd expect, but I do a lot of miles (30k miles a year) so I need something more compliant.  The H&R are still firm/sporty which suits the vRS, but its a far nicer road setup IMO.

How come the swap to Cupra + super pro over the TT arms Rob?

How come the swap to Cupra + super pro over the TT arms Rob?

combination of the extra track of the tt arm plus the offset and width of the wheels i'm running plus the relaxed nature of my H&r's vs. the b16s (allows the wheel to move around a lot more) and my low ride height and the tt caster means i'm very close to rubbing - take away prob just one of those aspects and it'd be fine.   although its just about ok now i suspect when it has winter tyres back on it in 6 months time it WILL be rubbing.

shame to lose the handling benefit of the tt arms (it really is good!) but hopefully with the cupra arm and camber adjustable superpro ball joints i'll still be able to run say -1degree neg camber at the front so it'll still handle pretty good plus the cupra arms are also alloy so i retain the weight saving and being the same size /geometry as the oe skoda/gti arms they'll sit better in the arch.  pretty sure mike had smilar issues on his cupra and took the same route.

the tt arms are a great mod and if i had more oe-ish wheel offset or width, or ran the car a bit higher, or had stiffer suspension then they'd be staying on the car.  i've popped them up in the for sale section so hopefully i'll be able to get my money back on these and offset most (some?!) of the costs of the new bits.

Thanks for that  :happy2:

Yeah I'm in the same boat, had the TT arms for the last two years, but have OE offset for now with monza shadows.

Would like to put on some lower offset wheels, but there's not much room left

Could be going down the same route

It's a 1966 13 window deluxe microbus, currently in California, soon to be starting it's journey to Oxfordshire...  can't wait - always wanted one of these so it's a dream come true for me.  Needs a full resto but from the info I have so far it's all straightforward stuff.  SWMBO's already picking out colours...

edit:   back to the drawing board on this one - seller pulled out unfortunately.   the search continues..  :sad1:

Brief update, the car is in it's "winter mode" now, OE neptunes fitted with the goodyear winter tyres.

This is the first time i've had the neptunes on with the Brembo calipers.  Without a spacer these won't fit unfortunately due to the design of the back of the spoke.  It's nothing to do with offset as the earlier mk2 Octavias on 18" Zeniths fit fine.

Washed and sorted.. just need to find where i've put those centre caps :-/

Since i took those pics a couple of weeks ago I've decided to take off the brembos so these are up for sale in the classifieds.

I need to release some cash so rather than fork out for some new discs (those one's in the pics are pretty worn now) i've popped the barely used oe calipers and discs back on so i can sell the brembos.  Breaks my heart to undo such a great mod, but i need the cash unfortunately.

Having said that if they don't sell maybe i'll keep them for the next project lol.. !

I hear that mate, that's why I've been putting it off, the temps have been quite high for this time of year.... looks like low singles are coming towards the end of the week into next though! :happy2:

Rightly or wrongly I plastidipped mine with the tyres on, used some Tyre Slik after they had cured, so they are shiny (for a while at least)... I did one with lacquer over the top, haha, big mistake that!! (took an hour to get it off).

What's the latest?

Hi Mike

latest?  lots of driving..  :D  the car is 18 months old now and is showing 47k miles - loving the way it drives on this suspension setup.  I swapped the rear ARB for an H&R as i got sick of the squeaks from the autotech (should have just got the h&r in the first place..) but other than that no other mods.

unfortunately i'm under notice of redundancy at the moment so i'm de-modding to free up some cash :(  brakes have already gone earlier in the year and i have some people already lined up for the coilovers and the neuspeed wheels.

its a shame to have to undo the mods but tbh i would have had to do it at some point anyway..  if i lose my job i'll get something closer to home so i could go for something more extreme next time, or if i end up staying here then i'll be due to order a replacement Nov/Dec time, either a mk3 vrs wagon or if they make the mk7 golf R estate that might just be possible..

less money for modding my daily now though as my '78 westfalia project is sucking up all my spare cash lol.

:)
