Title: Welding Newbie
Post by: dazza on February 27, 2016, 01:03:01 pm
Over a year ago i bought the cheapest welder i could find it had some good reviews on amazon. Mightymig 100

Its a flux core welder (no gas).

Finally unboxed it last night and ran a few beads.

Had no idea on settings etc so left the machine in low with a wire speed of 6.

If anyone has any pointers that would be great.

This is one thing I've wanted to learn for a while now but just need my own garage or workshop. Have a look on YouTube I've seen a few videos that were pretty good with plenty of info.

Watched a lot of videos. The machine i bought is budget only has two power settings and no info on recommended wire speed/power settings. Going to try some different settings later.

Wish i had got a normal Mig as the gassless is sh*t unless you are welding in a windy field.

Switched the machine to high today. Some better results. Still have no idea what i'm doing.

What do you do intend on welding? I hope nothing important safety wise on your car?

Welding is a skill that you really need to learn in practice from a trained instructor. I've done it before small scale but the lads I hire in to do my welding in work have been at it years!

Nothing on the car  :scared:

Someone has been trying to pry open the window in my garage so will make some bars for the window.

Also need a table for my printer with storage for the rolls of vinyl.

Ah in that case it's all minor stuff! Practice makes perfect! Start by welding 90deg angles together and then check their integrity by smashing them with a hammer in a vice... Try and get a lesson from a welder in a workshop somewhere also  :jumpmove:

Been doing a little practising getting better.

But then the wire ran out loaded a new rear and its sh*t. Bought another real that was also sh*t.

That angle actually looks pretty solid to be honest! Good work  :happy2:

Since you'll be making things for around the house I'd now focus on aesthetics. Try clean the droppings off of that original angle and then get a wire head attachment for a drill and polish it up!

Thanks mate i have some anti splatter spray which should help. I've ordered some more wire which hopefully is as good as the wire that came with the machine.

Was going to suggest spray which makes a lot easier to scrape off spatter and repells a certain amount.

This looks good. I'm gonna buy myself a mig welder just because I can't learning how to do a few bits and would be good to make some shelves in the garage.

Don't get the sealey mightymig 100. After a couple of days of use the power switch is not working properly. Get a gas one and use flux core then if you like it you can step it up and add the gas.

The wife wanted to spend €20 on some coat hooks.

Saving money already,  :jumpmove: some old sub frame bolts. Welded very poorly the welder is stuck on high at the moment.

flux core is a very hot wire, would have been better using mig solid wire. as for learning, its quite self taught, granted you need to know the basics but best way is to practice, learn angles, settings, speeds.

Much much better on the bars! Very clean...

Have you tried different metals yet such as high grade 316L stainless steel?

Don't think my welder can do stainless, i'm on the lookout for a second hand gas mig.

If anyone wants a Sealey Professional 230V 100A No-Gas Mig Welder let me know.

£45 delivered. Will throw in some gassless migwire. Bought it over a year ago but only unboxed it a few weeks ago. You can see it welding in video above.

And remove all the strength in the weld  :signLOL:

You can grind welds but you need to "V out" the welding area first. ( having watched guys on youtube engineering channels)

I did v out on the thicker stuff for the window bars.

These were not butted up as when i set it square my cuts were off.  The weld has penetrated through the metal to the other side should be fine for a printer table.

Why not try your hand at making your own snap on roller tool cabinet next?

I'm going to make another one of these next then a welding bench. A little roller cabinet would be handy but depends on what i can find locally.

This is exactly the device that I would like to learn how to manage, because I have my own workshop and have already bought equipment for myself, but I have been looking for video tutorials on this topic on the Internet for a long time. Somehow I was advised to turn to TIG welder reviews (https://prowelderguide.com/best-tig-welder/), which are based on just that. I got acquainted a year ago and now I can recommend it to you, because it is very important for us to achieve the result so that the work is done without splashes, with clean seams and nominal smoke, right guys? That is why I like this kind of work, it is full of effort and hard work, which is rewarded with the result
