Title: Pilot Sport 4 or others?
Post by: theparallaxview on March 09, 2018, 03:35:04 pm
I need to get new front tyres for my Mark 5 Golf. Looking at some of the threads, the Pilot Sport 4 look recommended, but on the tyre supplier sites they state they're for summer use. Would an alternative be a better all year solution?

If you do a search on here that tyre is highly recommended. I need to renew my tyres so will be trying those myself.
Looking at prices and saw these for delivered

I ran PS4s all around in the winter we had. Drove fine in snow and ice, just had to be careful as always I guess.

Haven't driven with a winter tyre berfore, but from watching YouTube videos, I can see they're far better for traction and steering ability but I haven't had an incident in my 12 years of driving and I've not felt a great need to buy them.

Not trying to sound billy big balls here, just saying that "summer" in a tyre name doesn't put me off.

I too am surprised by how good the PS4 is in the cold.   The general rule of thumb is summer tyres are too hard to conform to the road surface below 7 degrees and will lose grip easily.  I've found that to be true of other tyres, but I've used the PS4 in -5 temps without any concerns, just have to take it steady as said above.

I will say though, mine are down to 1.6mm on the rear and 2.3mm on the front (rotated just before the snow arrived) and I did have some sketchy over steer moments in the snow, but that's to be expected if you are a knob driving on snow with slicks

If I had full tread, I have no doubt they would be superb (for summers) on snow.   But nothing will beat a proper cold weather tyre though.

As far as what to choose, go with the assumption all of the premium brand sports tyres are ny on equal.  Just avoid ditch finders and you're golden.

Nothing beats my old Bridgestone RE720 for all round superbness though, brilliant tyres, but were sadly pulled over a decade ago.

I had 4 PS4's fitted just before Xmas and they've been fine in the recent cold weather.

I could probably find someone, but they haven't got any PS4 on offer. Think I will use Kwik Fit, but looks like I will have to wait until Thursday for a fitting. Thanks for all the helpful info, much appreciated.

Try your local dealer.  Mine price match and are by far the best at balancing in my area.

If you got a F1 Autocentre near you they do 2x Michellin PS4's in your size for £171.70 all in. And this is for the Y rated (up to 186 mph) XL tyre.

Use the Voucher Code COMPA2015 to get free Wheel Balancing Discount and a few quid off the tyres too.

Couldn't see if they are XL tyres on the F1 site?
Also OP have a look on black circles, think they're £96 fitted. Can get 2% on cashback sites too.

Wow didn't know there's a variance in prices for different regions! Londoners do love to charge a bit don't they? I'm in the Midlands and this is what I see with mine:

Are they definitely the XL version as I couldn't see that on the site? Great if so but just want to be sure before I order.

Sounds to me this is your daily and you just need and want a great tire for year round confidence.

I ran two sets of Conti SportContact 2 tires
...a set of Kumho PS91 summer tires
...a couple sets of Sumitomo HTR Z III summer tires
...a set of Conti Extreme Contact DW tires

These days I like the ultra High Performance A/S or All-Season tires. In many instances they are being review rated higher on wet and dry tracks than a surprising list of ultra/max summer tires...and they usually come with 40k to 45k mile warranties. I currently have Pirelli P Zero All Season Plus. https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Pirelli&tireModel=P+Zero+All+Season+Plus&sidewall=Blackwall&partnum=34YR8P0ASPXL&tab=Sizes
To me they have better grip than the summer tires I ran in the past or those I thought about selecting and have a 40k mile warranty.

I am going with a set of "Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3+" next time...they are rated higher than my current set, come with a 45k mile warranty, and Costco carries them on sale often making them equal in cost to my current set...$140usd/tire.

Yes F1 Autocentre lists XL and Non-XL tyres separately, just make sure when you put your tyre sizes down leave the speed rating as "Any" and it should pop up on the search results.

Ah ok I'd put in Y, I'll try that then cheers.

EDIT

Yep, that worked cheers. What's this with the precision balance upgrade...worth the extra few quid or not?

Precision balance upgrade? Is this in addition to regular balancing or a marketing ploy to make you think it is any better than a 'regular' wheel balance?

If they make you pay extra for them to do their job properly, as apposed to having a tolerance(?) I'd go elsewhere

Any advantage in XL, apart from them being a little cheaper? Just me in the car most the time and I'm not much of an extra load...

also, what's the difference between 45Z and 45Y? Have found some local suppliers who offer this spec: 225/45ZR17 (91Y) MICHELIN PIL SPORT 4
Title: Re: Pilot Sport 4 or others?

Z and Y are the maximum speed rating (168 and 186 respectively) and XL has stiffer side walls, so sharper cornering feel.  Non XL may be slightly comfier.

I'd be happy with a H rated 120mph tyre personally, and pay more for better sidewall and tread technology.

PS4 fitted, Iverson Tyres matched the F1 Auto price. Had alignment done too, feels like driving a new car. And it's rush hour now so need to wait for a proper run!

I tried Kumho Ecsta KU31 and KU19 about 10 years ago and they were better than I expected, but they were no Pilot Sports in the wet.
