Title: How to, Midline to highline retrofit
Post by: james on August 02, 2011, 09:44:31 am
Well the day started fine!  I thought I would change my clocks to highline clocks.

I run into a few problems so I thought I would create a little read me for anyone else.

What is needed,

T20 (remove clocks)
T15 (remove glass)(Not needed if dont want to clean glass / use the front that it comes with)
VCDS
VAG commander

Well it started like this,
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.myjunk.eclipse.co.uk%2Fnewcar%2Fbuild%2Fclocks%2Fclocksp1.jpg&hash=adb33bc59a6627c71e2f96b9e2cf545e99ae3720)

Then load VCDS, go into Instruments-17  and take a screen shot of the coding.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.myjunk.eclipse.co.uk%2Fnewcar%2Fbuild%2Fclocks%2Fclocksp1-1.jpg&hash=438ff3e28c34b450b4efb6d6c58e521ac03992b9)

Load up VAG Commander. Open channel on 07 and then select Instrument / immobilizer
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.myjunk.eclipse.co.uk%2Fnewcar%2Fbuild%2Fclocks%2Fclocksp1-2.jpg&hash=e6d533efed50e31273b2ead2e6fa0fd94e4ca3de)

Then select ”read current odometer value “  this will display your current mileage of your car (write this down or take a screen shot)
Once done select “Read security access code” this will take around 2min and it will display a 4 digit pin.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.myjunk.eclipse.co.uk%2Fnewcar%2Fbuild%2Fclocks%2Fclocksp1-3.jpg&hash=1c422e0be48a62847ede3b01ee7d326eb32e2cde)

Select “Read/write IMMO data”  This will also show your 4 digit immobilizer code.
Select read and then save,  stockclocks.bin (You will need this later to restore to your new cluster)
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.myjunk.eclipse.co.uk%2Fnewcar%2Fbuild%2Fclocks%2Fclocksp1-4.jpg&hash=b21df6480a4ef3b3c897eb1a52cc0e36b0e375f0)

Now disconnect your battery  and remove your clocks ( pull out the small piece of plastic above your steering wheel and it will reveal  2 T20 screws, the clocks will just pull out)

Have a cup of tea :)

If you don’t have USA clocks you can skip this bit and go to section 2

Release the clips around your cluster and it will fall into two half’s
Once in half take the front half and remove the 3 T15 screws and release the plastic clips around the edge.
(I did this process with both of my clusters)
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.myjunk.eclipse.co.uk%2Fnewcar%2Fbuild%2Fclocks%2Fclocksp1-5.jpg&hash=1e4ec1adba7a3df2e412664600c061fa9e78124d)

New and old next to each other
You can see the USA clocks have the water temp in Fahrenheit and the dial faces are different ( don’t have nice pictures like UK, they just have text  (BRAKE ect)
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.myjunk.eclipse.co.uk%2Fnewcar%2Fbuild%2Fclocks%2Fclocksp2.jpg&hash=cb93e4bec0c7ed4243d4c39d1ed7a95ec39b756c)

You don’t need to do this part but I took the glass out and gave it a good clean.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.myjunk.eclipse.co.uk%2Fnewcar%2Fbuild%2Fclocks%2Fclocksp3.jpg&hash=f50c38c841ead2a8f31ef6e1b3b1ba7defd2e3b3)

Reinstalled all the glass
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.myjunk.eclipse.co.uk%2Fnewcar%2Fbuild%2Fclocks%2Fclocksp4.jpg&hash=98d5f381233810d775165b3613867eb0adfa8676)

All nice and clean ( sad I know)
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.myjunk.eclipse.co.uk%2Fnewcar%2Fbuild%2Fclocks%2Fclocksp5.jpg&hash=fb2bf3f000742cbe9eddb7a8e16a935494b19f75)

Here is a picture of the USA cluster before I removed all the dials
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.myjunk.eclipse.co.uk%2Fnewcar%2Fbuild%2Fclocks%2Fclocksp6.jpg&hash=f59499c5db7d8a2e6eea0783ad2fdf5b8c428458)

I removed the dials by placing a small amount of tissue under a screw driver and applying a small amount of force to pop the dials off.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.myjunk.eclipse.co.uk%2Fnewcar%2Fbuild%2Fclocks%2Fclocksp7.jpg&hash=335551bcf3376846dea29119dea4c0bce5a40dfa)

Old clusters ready for transplant :)
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.myjunk.eclipse.co.uk%2Fnewcar%2Fbuild%2Fclocks%2Fclocksp8.jpg&hash=4ef1b572c05d93fd647bf644b95576b4b83c8e74)

Installed into new cluster,  now UK version
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.myjunk.eclipse.co.uk%2Fnewcar%2Fbuild%2Fclocks%2Fclocksp9.jpg&hash=2fc72a05dec3f53e1b12ecd16e228d0d6d6b392a)

Done the reverse and put the cluster back together
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.myjunk.eclipse.co.uk%2Fnewcar%2Fbuild%2Fclocks%2Fclocksp10.jpg&hash=ac2712d5a091f08c96586a813df0631f5f65fd09)

Section2
Installed the cluster into the car, reconnect battery.  The immobilizer is active and needs recoding.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.myjunk.eclipse.co.uk%2Fnewcar%2Fbuild%2Fclocks%2Fclocksp11.jpg&hash=5f4a31b47f46a46a87e934a6682e1bf20c748fb8)

Back into VAG commander  (Open channel on 07 and then select “Instrument / immobilizer” then select ” Read/write IMMO data”)
Select read and save the new clusters configuration  for backup reasons.
Once done select open, and select your old cluster configuration.  Then select write.
Turn off the ignition and leave the car for 5 min ( Or it won’t save the new immobilizer pin)
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.myjunk.eclipse.co.uk%2Fnewcar%2Fbuild%2Fclocks%2Fclocksp11-1.jpg&hash=6474e79ad21af500fd3b2f14c4c8a2353757eb4b)
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.myjunk.eclipse.co.uk%2Fnewcar%2Fbuild%2Fclocks%2Fclocksp11-2.jpg&hash=14d0135f15595f8d78117425d37a9315a893e65e)

Have some more tea :)

Now correct the car mileage

Open VAG commander (Open channel on 07 and then select “Instrument / immobilizer” then select “Read current odometer value”)
Enter the value from the old cluster and select “ change odometer”
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.myjunk.eclipse.co.uk%2Fnewcar%2Fbuild%2Fclocks%2Fclocksp11-3.jpg&hash=f5af54b00fd565ea5cc418a70f4efb67ecc111d7)

All done and the car starts fine but loads of faults to correct
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.myjunk.eclipse.co.uk%2Fnewcar%2Fbuild%2Fclocks%2Fclocksp12.jpg&hash=0d8918357bab4014e846fa4263b06b5026c60712)

Load up VCDS and do a full scan and see what faults show.
I had problems with
Steering Angle (G85)
http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/VW_Golf_(1K)_Steering_Assist#Adaptation
Lateral Acceleration Sensor (G200)
Brake Pressure Sensor 1 (G201)
http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/VW_Golf_(1K)_Brake_Electronics_(MK60)#Coding
-------------
Oil level sensor needs enabling on USA cluster
VCDS ( block 17, select coding)  Ender 039
Channel 039: Oil Level Sensor Adaptation
Change from 0 to 1
Will work fine
---------
Just follow the instructions and all will be fine :)

No more faults
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.myjunk.eclipse.co.uk%2Fnewcar%2Fbuild%2Fclocks%2Fclocksp13.jpg&hash=d80f9a664f36baef02ebcc5283bd947d22afd34c)

This will work up to cluster 972(2006) for 973 i think you need some different software to change the car mileage. 974 (VW job)

Any problems give me a shout happy help :):)

Fantastic write up, well done :congrats:

Brilliant detail and great pictures, this should be a sticky, mods. This write up deserves a medal, or at least a bag of sweets. James, a stack of hard work here that should make this commonly asked for mod much easier. Spot on mate.

One point, I've just swapped 964 midline to 974 Highline, thanks to Kalu on here. He can work the fix. VW can retrofit a 974 cluster only if its brand new.

Have - scan your car with VCDS or pull out your clocks & look at the label on it.

Need - read the forum sticky http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,18021.0.html

So someone correct if im right (I know you all will) in VCDS can you "clock" the car and roll the mileage back,  I know its illegal.... Before you all start lol

Is there a check bit to show that the mileage has been tampered with ?

Thanks

No, you can only set the mileage with VCDS if the clocks show less than 100km

Is there a check bit to show that the mileage has been tampered with ?

Yes you can check the mileage stored in the engine ecu with VCDS in EDC15/EDC16 ecu's (used in the 1.9 and 2.0 TDI PD)

Any additional information, in regards to the Mileage tampering? I would like to check if my GTI had been done or not.

thanks

Do you mean 974 cluster? I've not heard of a 947 one. If so, Kalu on this forum can help. He retrofitted a 974 highline for me.

When I did mine, I had a small problem with matching the cluster up to the ECU and my car wouldnt start!  Didnt realise at first and I nearly pood myself!

Thankfully I found out what the problem was and quickly fixed the issue!

Finally, did my mid to highline conversion and the whole operation went thru without a blip!
Simply love the new look! nagivation included!
The only problem is, I realised that the "convenience menu" is missing from the settings list.
Is it because my car is not equipped with this, or did I missed out any steps.
If former, what do I need to do to get it in. Change the central electronics module?

depends on how many doors your car has and what year.

what is your current one

there is also a chance you have a highend one but it has been coded not to display.

Mine is a 06 5-dr. Let me go get my installer to find out the PN. keeping my fingers crossed its just a case of not coded. Thanks again!

You can do it with Genuine Vag commander (not the cheap ones on ebay)
Or the dealer with a new cluster

you want 1K6 920 874

If you're finding it hard to source a UK cluster, also enquire with retek.de but make sure it's a unit in MPH.

Very true, Ed.

The problem with Retek is that you pay a premium, and I'm not sure what the going rate is for coding x73/74 clocks these days?

Very difficult to code a used 74 cluster. Dealers can't unless it's a brand new one. The only guy on here that can do this is Kalu, who retrofitted my 974 highline. Fantastic guy & very helpful. Drop him a pm, he may well be able to help/advise you

Does anyone know if a dashboard with VAG number: 1K6 920 864

Happy Christmas  :santa: every one!!

If possible, I'd like some advice about my midline to highline upgrade.
I've read everything I can find about it on this and other forums, but I keep getting myself confused.
I currently have a 1K0 920 960 Midline dash in the car at the mo. I think I need a 1K0 920 970 for a highline upgrade (I have a GT TDI, not as easy to find as petrol  :sad1: ).  I know that any clocks after 06 need to be done by VW (or a couple of guys on here).
So, can I conceivably look for any highline clock on fleabay, as long as they're manufactured before 2006? Or would I need 1K0 920 970 for me?
Any help would be greatly appreciated :driver:
Also, does Vag Can Commander require another lead? I have VCDS Hex+Can at the mo, and don't want to buy another lead just for this mod!

Thanks,

Dave

Does anyboby knows if i buy a new cluster comes with the immo pin?
So if i have a cluster and the code, i just need micronas programmer and vag can commander?
Is it the same for a used cluster that comes with the code too?
Thnaks!

depends on how many doors your car has and what year.

what is your current one

there is also a chance you have a highend one but it has been coded not to display.

....Is that just the convenience module that might not have been coded to display, or the Midline 'puter?

How do I find out what version my Midline is? My GTI is a July 05 build and so a 06 spec build apparently.

Hi Robin,

IIRC you can find it through VCDS (perhaps JKM would do it for a pack of Mcvitties finest )

Flippin' 'eck, there's some big numbers on this page, so not really a DIY job unless you wanna drop a four figure sum on software!

http://www.vag-info.com/VAG%20Group%20products.htm

Oh and I like the all done picture in the OP, where the car only has 4 miles on the clock instead of nearly 10,000 times that...

The software used isn't like VCDS and very few people have access to it. I'm also lead to believe the unit needs to link with Germany to verify mileage?

From 07 onwards the VW's need link to Wolfburg, but there's some few people able to do it anyway, one person inhere should be able to, can't remember his name though  :sad1:

The front of the midline I have looks like this.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.myjunk.eclipse.co.uk%2Fnewcar%2Fbuild%2Fclocks%2Fclocksp5.jpg&hash=fb2bf3f000742cbe9eddb7a8e16a935494b19f75)

Ive bought a highline cluster(thanks raz  :happy2: ) which is all plastic. Is the front facia easy to swap over as I quite like the look of the mid-line facia?

Thansk in advance

No problem mate :)

Look at the clips on the midline and highline cluster. see it the clips match in the same position then it should fit.

Sorry to revive this thread - but i assume if you have any problems with the new cluster you can always put the old one back in and the car will start?

thanks!

However, I can't seem to see the 'Read/write IMMO data' option - have i missed a step?

A massive THANK YOU!!!! to James the OP on this thread :happy2: :happy2: :happy2:

Followed your how-to do the letter buddy and it worked absolutely perfect!

So thanks again for taking the time to de the write up.

I never would've had the stones to have attempted this without your excellent write-up. Very much appreciated!!

The only thing I would add is that after I turned all the lights off on the dash my ABS light was still on.

I  had to follow the instructions in the video attached from Ross-Tech as to how to get the light to turn off permanently.

Just a handy little extra for anyone who does this retrofit and ends up with their ABS light on afterwards....

Hey everyone, first poster here, sorry to resurrect an old post. I've had my Mk5 GTTDI for a while and managed to do a few of the easier mods but I'm stumped with reading/writing the IMMO data in a 973B cluster. When I read it the data is just a load of 000000 and when I write it seems to take, but then I leave the car and return and the Immo is still active. Am I doing something wrong? Incidentally it doesn't read the PIN either, just seems to time out. I've followed the instructions posted here (very grateful for these) to the letter, but resulting in a blank...

I've checked the RossTech site and it states that if the serial number starts VWZ then it's Immo4a which can be adapted....

Confused here...can anyone cleverer than me help please?

Thanks in advance :-)

Hello,if you make this Swap and the meniu not appear you need vcds and follow the steps:
Vcds - 17 - Instruments - 10 - Adaptation - Channel 00 - Read - Value 000 - Save and Close the car and leave the car like 5-10 minutes and now you can use MFD Meniu. You can lock the car and leave, because if you try when you make this procces is not appear the meniu.(sorry for my English 😘)
