Title: Thoughts on my first week of ED30 Ownership
Post by: neilw on February 22, 2017, 12:42:15 pm
I've had my Tornado Red GTI ED30 just under a week now and am starting to get to know the car. I thought I'd share my initial thoughts on the car. My previous cars were a Z4 Coupe and A4 TDI 130

- The handling feels really good, it gives me loads of confidence in the corners
- I need to stop driving it like my old A4 Tdi, and use the revs, Otherwise, it doesn't feel that fast
- The MFD2 Headunit sounds terrible, this will be my first upgrade
- Don't have the computer set to MPG
- I really like the Mirrors down, Puddle lights, Coming home lights

It feels like a big grown up version of my 6n2 Polo GTi I owned 6-7 years ago

At the weekend I'm putting in fresh Oil, Oil Filter, Pollen Filter, Fuel Filter and replacing the Cam Follower. The weekend after that with the help of a mate who's a tech at an independent VAG specialist we're going to change the Cambelt, Waterpump and put a new thermostat in, and chuck a new PCV valve on.

I need to try and find out what build number I have as I have no plaques

Then after swapping out the headunit I'll put a DV+ on there. I then plan to keep the car standard for a year or so and then think about an exhaust and some lowering springs and a remap.

And if it's still standard, 230hp isn't much either.

The full contact details for the man you need at VW UK are buried in the Edition 30 register pages. They have been updated fairly recently, so try p 45 or so...that thread can be a pita to search, but the info is all there.

Remap

Was the best thing I've done to mine by far. It transforms the car. Left rtech with an extra 80bhp from stock.

All Ed. 30 should be remapped.   Waste of engine on stock file.

It's pretty much accepted knowledge that the ed30 was 'detuned' so it didn't step on the toes of the flagship R32.

How much boost do they run standard? Can't be much more than 9psi or so?

Get a decent downpipe and map and it'll come alive!

Cheers guys sounds like good stuff!

Do you get any issues with torque steer when running around 300bhp? The car needs to be usable everyday on commutes

The mk5 chassis doesn't suffer at all badly from torque steer. I'm running about 350lb/ft and it really isn't an issue.

Compared to an Astra VXR my mate had it's leagues above. That was only Stage 1, so around 270/270 and it was terrible for torque steer.

What you might struggle with is traction itself. Once you get up towards 330-340lb/ft with mods like an uprated fuel pump and downpipe, and Stage 2/2+ map, it can be tough to get the power down in the lower gears.

But if you get a good progressive map, such as R-Tech you'll have a better chance of keeping traction. At Stage 1 levels of torque (300-320lb/ft) you shouldn't struggle anyway.

how does the stock clutch deal with stage 1? I've got an eddy but its just tipped over 100k so I'm concerned that a remap will see off the clutch quite quickly

Thanks, I'm not going to be going crazy with mods. So I should be fine. Map, Exhaust and intake is probably all I'll do power wise, nothing for a year or so tho until I'm with a mod friendly insurer. I don't want to get to the point I need fuel pumps, and bigger brakes ect. R-Tech looks good

Here she is anyways

Stock maps does 1.2 bar of peak boost and 0.8 bar of stable boost. Pretty low boost if you ask me.

Enough for 270 BHP with a TBE, IC and HPFP so the stock hardware chokes the engine.

Which is bollocks because a stock ed30 is quicker than an R32....except launching.

Yeah we all know that. But what I'm talking about is in terms of marketing the R32. People look at performance figures. If the ed30 had the 260-270bhp it should have had, the R32 would have been much less desirable.

Should the standard GTI have been released with 230bhp?

That would have made the life of the R32 even harder...

I put in my new Cam Follower this morning. Very easy job, took about 25mins. The one I took out looked as fresh as the one that went in. So I guess its been swapped fairly recently.

Oil change this afternoon

Pollen filter was super easy to change too!

Weird thing is, the stock ED30 makes the same torque at 2200rpm as the R32 does as a peak (2800ish) but the R32 feels a lot punchier up to that point.

I remember my old R32 being a traffic beast.  Could crawl along in 3rd at walking pace all day.  No chance in the ED30, it's gearing is too tall for the lack of torque below 2500rpm.

Yep, that's good old fashioned displacement for you. There's no escaping the fact our GTIs and Ed30s are 2 litre four bangers when you're off boost.

My 'holy grail' engine-wise would be something 3 litres or more - for the natural torque, 6 cylinders - for the sound, and a fast spooling turbo at moderate boost - for the fun power delivery. We chatted about R32 turbos in another thread; if I ever had the chance it'd be firmly on the list. Along with something like a Nismo 400R. Which I can assure you, will never be in budget!!
