Hello everyone!
I have been driving my car for a short time after rebuilding it and getting it back on the road, Tuesday my car just decided not to work. I believe that the ECU has died as I can still communicate with my DSG box which has flagged some codes but I believe that's relative to the ECU not being able to communicate with it.
The car itself will not start and I have checked all other areas, air/fuel/combustion etc. My first thought was to connect my OBD2 reader but it will not auto read the vin or show any codes related to the engine.
I was just wondering if I purchased a 2nd hand ECU, are they directly plug and play or would I need it coding?

Check powers, grounds, fuses & relays first. If you can't hear the throttle body whining/clunking when you turn the ignition on, the ECU either has no power, or it's dead as you suspect. I've never heard of these ECUs simply dying, so it could be a simple power feed issue.
If you get a second hand ECU, the immobiliser will need removing. There's an ebay seller who sells de-immobilised ECUs ready to go, but he's expensive. Another option is to send your ECU off, along with the spare one, to get it copied over and posted back.

Yeah I've checked the fuse box and the positive connectors with a circuit tester and all fuses work perfectly, I did quickly clean them with a electrical fluid cleaner and then dusted them off with a wire brush and retested them. All worked fine and plugged the ecu back in, tested and the car continued to crank but shortly die afterwards. I checked to see if the ECU could be read with an OBD2 reader but came across the same issue. I'm going to get an multimeter tomorrow and test the ohms and power to the ECU, to find out if there are any discrepancies.

No worries.
It might be worth getting a pin out diagram for the ECU and check it has power and ground at the ECU plug(s)....and also check the CAN lo and CAN hi pins for activity with the meter, which would indicate the CAN gateway is at least trying to talk to it. That at least will verify the wiring is fine end-to-end.
If the ECU does need replacing, you may have already noticed it's held into it's bracket with shear bolts, which will need drilling out before you can hoik the ECU out, which is annoying!

Check relay 100 in the engine bay as well, that's the ECU's.
So does the engine actually fire up? Cranking isn't controlled by the engine ECU.

Hey pudding, the car cranks and starts up but shortly dies. I believe it's a issue with either the ignition switch or a relay from testing literally all the standard fuse's with a circuit tester, removing them and testing them all individually with a fuse tester. All being fine and tested all the positive connectors to the fuse box, which all resulted in passes by my book. My only concern was the relay's so I'm going to get a new one tomorrow and change the ignition switch. I forgot to mention that I tested the codes previously and had a bunch. Some are minor and slowly sorting them out as I have only just got the car running but didn't expect the car to die so suddenly :surprised:

Immbiliser?
I had this issue when I thought I had a bad ECU but only when I plugged in a supposed unlocked one.
Immobiliser key didn't show on the dashboard but the ECU guy I had confirmed it was the immobiliser which allows it to crank, fire, run for about a couple of seconds then immediately die.

Its either that or the ECU, but my thoughts are still going to ECU because I can't scan my OBD2. My friend gave me a card for a key guy, so ill call him next week.

With that many fault codes, I'm leaning towards a bad CAN Gateway or a bad earth, broken wires etc. The gateway lives above the pedals, directly underneath an access hatch under the wiper motor. If the seal on said hatch leaks water onto the CAN gateway, well, you get a shed load of fault codes and communication failures. But the same can also happen with bad grounds and broken wires. The wires in the harnesses that pass through the doors and hatch are old favourites for that!

I'll have a look into it, I've ordered VCDS to get a clearer picture from V Tech UK but they are taking their sweet sweet time.

These are my logs below, I had a gent come and visit the car as my VCDS still hasn't been shipped but I will be getting one soon :happy2: We checked the CAN gateway with his own and some clocks but those were not the issue. So from his thoughts, it may be that the CAN high/low wiring must have a been cut or faulty in general. But its still all in the air. He did mention it may be something with the powertrain data bus as the connection will not communicate to everything else.

That is the standout one for me. Without Colonel Gateway in charge, none of the troops will be able to communicate with each other.
At least the immobiliser is happy, not that you could drive the car away anyway :grin:
Given the vast amount of communication related faults, it's got to be Colonel gateway. I believe the comms from OBD2 port start with him and spread out from there. A severed CAN Line would normally show up as a no comms on the module the wire break is nearest.

I finally had the time to look at my car and check a couple things, firstly I didnt want to go through the mess of trying to find the issue through CAN wiring, I put a post up on TFSI owners Club FB and someone PM'D me. Showing all the details he reccomended me to purchase a BCM. Purchased it from Danny and fit it, cleared the codes and the car fired up :pomppomp:
Hopefully if anyone has the same issue, try purchasing a 2nd hand BCM and installing it!

No worries, hopefully someone who has the same issue doesn't have to wait months on fixing it. Sometimes you just have to be the unlucky one but at least it's back on the road :happy2:

Just an update, was going to my dads and on the way my car broke down. :laugh: BCM died again from my assumption, so it must be something else that is killing it. I tried my ODB2 once again after the car died but had no luck with communicating with any of the modules. Similarly to what happened previous to the fix. I'll keep this thread updated for a fix once I get it sorted, but I'll be taking it to a garage to check some electronics. Firstly I'll purchase a new one from TPS and go from there. Hope I'll get it sorted before the summer. It's all fun and games!!!

I did find this yesterday as I needed to check the wiring due to previously starting the car and the fan started going to the moon. Shortly disconnecting the battery. Tried moving the ECU around for some odd reason and the car started, so continued looking into the wiring and found that some of the wires were broken which was in the video. So I've downloaded the circuit diagrams, and I'm going to try to find the issue at hand. Also to note, disconnected the ABS module due to many people telling me to test it over 3 other forums but no help and I scanned and cleared codes each time.

So I believe that the J500 is faulty, does anyone have any more information regarding the continuation of a fix. Disconnected the power steering wire seen in the video, I believe its that is the reason for the powertrain having communication issues due to this. I still had the ABS module unplugged but I will plug this in tomorrow and rescan it. It starts every time now, but I want to be 100% before I drive it anywhere.

Hey guys, so it's been fixed with some issues with codes and basic settings but its my last year at university and I've been concentrating on that. Yesterday me and a friend, my friend mostly installed a gen3 power steering rack after diagnosing that the CAN HI/LOW read that the resistance was totally f*cked https://youtu.be/tyKK2JZ4U68 (https://youtu.be/tyKK2JZ4U68). Once it was installed, the car started easily without issue. I just need to do the basic settings and work through some codes. Hopefully I'll be able to drive it soon. It's been way too long.

After removing the rack, we wanted to see the damage. If anyone has had any weird symptoms. Make sure to get it checked out before driving it anymore. Thankfully the power cable insulation held up and didn't catch fire.

Ah yeah, 30 is the Battery + post I believe? There are a few modules that are 'hot' at all times, so that error code is quite common.
You have the patience of a saint and well done for keeping us informed. So many forums have dead threads with no answers, so top man :happy2:
I find vehicle wiring incredibly tedious and unrewarding to troubleshoot. I think I would have thrown the towel in an scrapped the car, but Kudos to you for tackling each issue systematically :smiley:
How is the engine bay fuse board looking? With some fried steering harness wiring like that, I wouldn't be surprised if the fuse box could be slightly toasted as well.

Honestly Pudding, if I didn't have so much f*cking money into it I would have scrapped it. To be honest I should have when it first died but I'm way in too deep that the mrs would be hella angry if it didn't work (still doesn't lmfao). I could have tore it apart months ago but I wanted the rabbit to be taken care of and its my first project car. Now I'm getting a Signal to fuel pump issue and I'm honestly just tired.

Yeah I know the feeling. I don't keep costing spreadsheets like some folk do as it's too depressing. I reckon with the money I've spent on fixing and modifying VWs, plus all the 20mpg fuel costs over the past 20 years, I could have driven a diesel sh1tter or 5 for that long, saved the money and bought a 911 :grin: But car enthusiasts always seem to prefer the school of hard knocks :grin:
Thinking back to the beginning where you said these problems began after you rebuilt it, was it fine before hand? Did the engine come out? Just wondering if a wire got accidentally got pinched and shorted out, which caused all this grief? If any of the CAN modules get shorted out, that can upset the rest of them, including the gateway.
Having said that, the steering rack wiring harness on Gen1 racks was a known weakness. VW under spec'd the wire size, which in some cars caused the crispy mess you ended up with. If one of those shorted out thin wires is a CAN signal, I can see that causing you some problems. Before I switched to a Gen 3 rack and harness, I did notice with hefty steering inputs, it felt like the rack couldn't keep up and got mega stiff all of a sudden. I suspect that was the motor struggling for current over the thin wires.
Anyway, keep soldiering on, you'll get there. I'll have a look at your LPFP thread.

A pin was bent and the car started fine shortly after the fix. Honestly, I'm not sure what fck'd the steering module, the engine was upgraded as you know but I'm sure I did it as carefully as I could when working on it alone.

I think you were just unlucky with that. The Gen1/2 rack was known to have under specced wiring. Thank god it didn't torch the car!
