First useful thing would prob be to set up a donation point, something like a paypal address perhaps? People can put some donations in then.
Forum owners / runners, distribute the stickers for the forum with a slight mark up so a percentage goes in to the forum pot?
Same for any other merchandise if possible? Not sure whos been doing these things before.
What sort of money are you talking about for a years hosting?
-
maybe a sponsered smile for John 0

We already have some merchanise and sticker sales running or in the pipeline but to be far these make very little money.
Costs are in the region of £600-£800 per year for the dedicated server.
If people are happy to directly contribute then we will sort a Paypal donation link :happy2:

That's just SteveP trying to stop you spamming too many threads :P
I know it may go against the original concept, but surely a commercial site sponsor would pay good money to advertise on a site with the volume of traffic that this forum gets? I personally would like the site to stay advert free, but if it helps pay the bills and keeps the site dependable and viable then it is something worth considering?
Why not have a word with Tabs on UKMKIV's and Zboyd on seatcupranet and see how they manage advertising and sponsorship?

Part of what makes this place great though is the nice atmosphere and being able to say what we want without having to worry about upsetting our sponsors.
We have 1500 members at present, and pretty much every night there is 100 on-line. If all of those 100 donated a tenner once a year that would cover the costs.
So i believe we can fund it ourselves without any sponsors. :happy2:

Me too Gaz.. £10 from me.. :happy2: That's £20 already..
Or even better some sort of fund raising meet?
-
Don't know what i'd do with myself all day if this site wasn't about any more... :signLOL:
-
Yep, I'm with tc, the regulars on here that aren't scared off by pulling out a tenner should be putting money in the pot
yes there will be people with 500+ posts paying any people with 50 not paying. But who cares??? I'm sure us 100 members get waaaay more use out it than a 10er
that's why i've always been happy to donate in the past, miglior aside.
I think to maintain the quality of forum we have all the long standing members need to dust off their paypal ;)
Another serious point needs making..... Robin should pay at least £100/ yr just cos he's robin and on here all the time
-
Ok I go on a Subaru forum and to get the full version of the site ie tech info and for sale sections they charge £2 a month or £15 for the year and it looks like it works and yes there are companies on the site but I think to view all the company stuff you pay the £2
-
Think i agree with Hurdy,on this one ukmkiv do have buisness advertise on thier site but you hardly or not notice they are thier..its a open forum like on here-forum members have upset some sponsers of the site in the past but it hasn't affected it in any way
-
I personally would be against having to pay membership. I don't mind paying it now but on othrr car sites that have them, it's something I didn't want to do. Forum addicts will happily pay and I'm sure if you took the site down for 24 hrs there would be enough response to ensure it never happens again (until when you need more money)!!!
How much do you get in donations?
-
if i put together how much money i have saved due to tech advise and tricks learned here, i would almost not be as poor as i am due to all the great mods i also have learned about here. :signLOL:
If a tenner or 20 are needed through donation to keep adverts away and hang on to the format as is, then i would gladly donate. :notworthy:
keep the good work up guys :drinking:
-
Another forum you may wish to consider speaking to is Briskoda.
They have something called Freedom which allows the member to advertise and sell stuff. They also have adverts from companies but only done in the header and footer of the page. However if you aren't a Freedom member then you get a slightly less advert free view.
Go take a look and see what you think.
I'm not against paying to get a better experience and a tenner a year is negligible but you will always get those that object for whatever reason or just wont pay full stop.
Difficult one Mr P. If you manage to find an amicable solution you should probably run for PM.
-
I hope that I don't let the cat out of ther bag too much.
One thought myslef and Mr P are chatting about, is the setting up of a dedicated forum shop. I have a good contact within the VAG trade system.
I have started pricing up various 'kits'. For instance i can do S3 wishbone kits delivered for £350. I make £10 to cover my legwork/petrol/packing etc and the forum would look to make £10-15.
i can do this on any item, at any time.
just a thought, and would help the forum sustain itself, and remain independent.

Hi although still a newbie, i`d be more than :happy2: to bung you a tenner.
I`ve only been a member for about 3 weeks but i`ve had more than a tenners worth of help!! THANKS
Why not organise a track day/meet? :driver: and take a percentage on the entry fee.
Where can i get a sticker and not the new army style one :signLOL:

Ive not been hanging around for long, but have got a bit addicted (distracted) by the site and for the amount of time and enjoyment I get out of it would be more than happy to make a donation to keep the lights on for another year! IMHO a compulsory membership could be detrimental to the influx of new members who may not fully realise the value of the site.
I am in a position where I work for an NSP who provide bandwidth and connectivity to many of the UK ISP's hosting companies, etc and would be more than happy to see if there is anyway I can get a server placed in one of our racks, or anything else I can do to help :happy2:
-
One key element of the forum is the fact it has no ties to any traders, which is a superb ethos, some forums i haunt have relationships with specific traders and this in itself means that to avoid losing any revenue from the traders the forum admin must keep them happy. this results in blind loyalty from forumites, a lack of educated choice for members (prejudice toward the sponsor), and other companies not willing to get involved due to sponsorship roles being exclusive to one brand
no one likes adverts on forums except the sponsor that benefits from it, users get annoyed with them, they can also have the adverse effect of slowing the viewing experience for the user and also effect the bandwidth if not managed correctly.
and also with sponsors come rights, if the sponsors have priority rights due to funds donated, then the users of the site drop in priority by natural selection - no sponsor = no bills paid
Donations by members can be effective but only to a point, people don't like giving money away on the whole unless they feel a genuine benefit from it. Even hard core users of sites will avoid donating if they disagree with the process regardless wether or not they agree with funds needing to be raised, they become passengers to the process. Yes regular users can donate regularly but it becomes two tier, why should those that donate get for free which others have paid for? Not everyone has a problem with such a thing but it would prevent donations happening from others.
But to donate then you would need to be aware or at the very least be active within the forum realms, there are a large amount of registered members that don't post and prefer to read the threads regularly. I've met forum members who actively sought me out to say hello at GTI international last year as they wanted to chat about various matters, however i had never heard of their username and have still yet to see them post. someone like that wouldn't donate potentially however still reap the benefits of the site.
The key here is the age old statement of "if it aint broke don't fix it" however it clearly needs fixing but to remain as close to original format that users have become familiar with and without giving loyalty away.
so with that said, fund raising rather than donations could be the way forward but by utilising the traders rather than relying on sponsorship from them and bring the forumite into an active role on their own choice
for example a membership scheme.
Now i don't mean a two tier system with the forum, nor do i suggest the forum has restricted areas or members gain elevated status, the key is to make no change to the forum by introducing it
to run it would be a simple matter of a membership card and number, something thats cheap to both produce and element. The forum user pays the site to join the scheme, this money is used to fund and run the site and all related aspects, in return they get a card and number.
this membership gives them a discount with each trader associated with the scheme, a percentage off of products for example (not just one product but a cast iron discount with that trader). Although you could put together a membership pack, a simple card and number would manage the same result.
Traders would want to join the scheme to get involved, all they would potentially need in return is an area of the forum restricted to themselves where they can gain access to membership details to confirm names with numbers before issuing the discount on their service or product.
- result would be forumites get a discount scheme and save money on products and services
- the forum doesn't outwardly change or run adverts yet receives an income which returns the buyer with a benefit system
- traders get customers guided to them with a discount
managing a scheme is a question of information, making the traders aware of changes, the members aware of offers and finally monitoring the expiration of memberships
traders can be added, new companies approached to keep the interest alive and in time with build to a valuable card to hold, making it a no-brainer for a forumite to purchase as rather than donating money for the privilege or reading a forum they are in effect buying a money saving device which in turn actively pays for the running of the forum. As long as discounts are strictly given to those with member numbers only by the traders involved
no loyalties are giving to any one trader this way, more than one type can join the scheme and can be monitored for performance and dropped from the scheme if they don't perform as expected (after all the only financial outlay is for a forumite to buy a membership - less of course the card production and time taken to help manage the scheme)
i have other thoughts too.... but i'll let that lot get digested first  :popcornsoda:
-
maybe a sponsered smile for John 0
will do what I can to help, but thats just taking it too far ....

You haz funds Mr P. :happy2:
-
Thats a good post by VC and given the tech area already is segregated in to some tuners who give out advice and get recommendations its already partly putting trade their way that they may not have otherwise got - worth considering.
I dare say something detailing related could be worth looking in to a small discount on products from a seller to the forum perhaps, it certainly seems to be one of the in things at the moment - or maybe i just managed to miss this trend all these years lol
I'm also very new to the site, however its this site where i found the car i now own and cherish so i could argue you've cost me enough already lol but would be happy to donate and shall do once i can remember by paypal password lol
edit: Donation sent :happy2:

Another serious point needs making..... Robin should pay at least £100/ yr just cos he's robin and on here all the time
....Oi!! Don't hold your breath
I would be happy to pay a £10 donation but am unsure about a formal membership scheme (I think).
I agree that it's best not to rely on any commercial advertisers at all if possible. It will be difficult to be truly objective in reports and discussions so not to upset a sponsor.
Personally, I don't want to feel obliged to shop on this site in order to help its funding - Too much like a tax for my liking. A positive idea, but sorry, Dave. But others can still do so, of course.
I don't care two figs whether some of the other registered people aren't paying/donating anything.
So, why not just ask for donations as and when needed..
-
Disagree with a membership scheme, it will inadvertently create a tier between users.
I think the forum shop thing that stoke mentioned is a very good idea.
I also think that the idea posted by b7unr is a good one. The forum could organise more formal meets such as track days/trips to attractions etc, and charge a ticket cost with an added margin that goes to maintaining/improving the forum. I can't see how anyone would object to that?
Whilst the current method of gaining donations (the occasional thread in the General Section) is working fine now, I think it may grow tiresome in the future, although I'm sure that this isn't your long term plan to keep doing it in the same manner as now anyway.
Do you charge the traders an annual cost to be an approved trader? Or do you take a cut of their sales via the forum? (or do they donate a cut themselves?). N.B. I'm not suggesting that this is done (don't want all you traders getting angry at me), I'm just wanting to find out the approach that the forum takes.
I'll donate shortly :happy2:

i agree with hedge reference how well the "freedom"scheme works on briskoda. you don't notice any "tier" of membership at all,
you just get the membership number which entitles you to put things in the for sale section(anyone can buy from there only members can sell). Also that membership number entitles you to discounts for the sponsers, as well as cheaper insurance for being a foum geek. and the big plus is your are not restricted on posting in the forums.
ill send you a tenner tomorrow, i put enough time in on here for it to be justified, plus the server seems to go downn quite a bit for m, id prefer to see the forum running smoother

....Are you seriously asking a Greek such a question!? There's always been a way among Greeks. In fact, as any Greek would tell you, if you don't know how to do such things, you can't be a real Greek. I say this as someone who is part Greek and has lived there.

I know there's always "a way" it's probably all these "ways" which have caused all the recent trouble! I asked whether he was allowed, not whether he was able! :rolleye:

....RR rushes off to his Greek dictionary to check if there even is a Greek word for "allowed". Being 'allowed' is a very strange concept to me, Neo.

I've been on here for about a year now and although I've just sold my GTI, I am hoping you guys will let me stay with the car I have ordered.
Thanks to all that make this site possible, and long may it continue :happy2:
P.S. Idea I thought of whilst reading this thread; When there are large Group Buys, there could be a couple of quid added to the item to go towards the site. Just a thought.

Thanks again for the donations, we have now funded a new dedicated server for nearly a full year. :happy2:
We will be switching to this server late on Friday night/ Early Saturday morning.
As a result of the move it is possible the site will be unavailable for a number of hours while the new DNS settings are propogated around the Internet.
Status updates on the server move will be posted here - www.stevepound.co.uk/serverstatus.html

Excellent :happy2:

Good total, ive seen some pictures floating around with mk5golfgti tag on them does this mean the new server might support some picture hosting for members?

IMHO I don't see the much benefit in offering picture hosting as the likes of photobucket do a very good job :happy2:

No its a great idea, and as RR very good, hence I thought it was from the new server as I know you are testing it out, is it a template or .gif you could share or is it more embeded than that?

Update - 24/03/12
As some of you will have noticed the forum has been getting busier and as a result a lot slower at times.
We are due to renew our maintenance fees for the server the site is hosted on in the next two weeks and I would like to take the opportunity to upgrade the server to ensure we can maintain a good level of service.
With the donations over the last few weeks we have over £200 in the kitty already but need to raise around another £450 to pay for the coming year.
As such it's time to ask you all for some help and to donate to the running of the forum, we still believe the current method of keeping the site free of sponsors is the right way and without the generosity of you all the site couldn't exist :notworthy: :noteworthy:
Thanks for your continued support,
SteveP & the Mk5GolfGTI.co.uk Team.

Evening all,
Spent the day in various postures and positions in my Ed.30 fitting my MDI kit in the armrest and removing the CD Changer, and fitting the sliding cover cubby/drinks holder to replace the poverty spec. '2 holes in a bit of plastic' fitted from the factory. My back is killing me but now my iPhone shows up on the RNS 510 and the space between the seats actually looks finished! All this retro-fitting (and backache!) is down to the Forum and its willing and knowledgeable members so thank you and a donation has been sent!!
Cheers

I assumed the sliding cover was standard fit
-
Hi
I thought so too but my '57 plate Edition 30 was without sliding cover cupholder and covered ashtray/cubby in front of gearstick too! Cheapskates huh! Or maybe the original buyer specced the car this way although I doubt it.....!
