Welcome to the forum. .how you finding the golf compared to the honda

Your GTi looks nice. I'm an ex EP3 Type-R owner as well. I sold it 4 years ago but really missed NA engines so bought a DC2 Integra. Type-R's are more involving cars to drive fast and the handling and transmissions are superb. They are also surprisingly cheap to run if you get a well looked after car (hard to find now though).

The GTi is the better 'do it all' car, but reving a car to 9k rpm is a lot of fun.

As for your question..The honda is light with great handling..But you have to keep it high in the rev range to get the most out of the car..the gearbox is one of the best with the gear knob close to the driver for quick changes..put simply a drivers car...

As for the golf i'm loving it..I like the power from low down in the rev range it really puts you back...and the build quality is second to none. i'm going to enjoy modding this car...

hi....Another little update well first of all I decided I needed a new intake...and their are lots to choose from..as everybody is well aware I was looking at around the £300 mark. When I came across the Ramair kit. I know a few people on the forum already have this kit and at a bargain price of £155 why not so this arrived a few days ago.....

  (https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8710/17050250099_8dbb0a3e40_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/rYEZki)IMG_0146 (https://flic.kr/p/rYEZki) by deansinpost (https://www.flickr.com/people/131697897@N02/), on Flickr

all fitted ... Well impressed with the build quality for such a low cost system.....

(https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7683/17048676868_8423289c15_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/rYwVEC)IMG_0151 (https://flic.kr/p/rYwVEC) by deansinpost (https://www.flickr.com/people/131697897@N02/), on Flickr

After fitting the kit was fitted.. I was toying with the idea of cutting the engine cover just like a lot of people have. But gave up because when I brought the car the previous owner had cracked the cover..so i might get a tt rs one I believe that fits..so decided to remove the oil cap neck so it sits flush a lot better I think

also the bonnet  lining was hanging down in places so got rid of that too...looks a lot cleaner now...

and last of all..Open Fog light gillies much better and a very good fit They should have come like this from the factory.....

Title: Re: Deano Black Golf GTI
Post by: Deano45 on April 23, 2015, 08:04:37 pm
Well Jayha.. just like you may have I have a long list..but I'm not going to rush this one..I do tend to rush building up cars and then get bored of them and end up selling..first thing first

New wheels .......in the shape of something bbs/maybe reps
suspension ........Eiback sportline springs/ no coil-overs this time round
New Exhurst   ....power valve exhaust/liking that one over millteck system.

And I guess a few bits and bobs along the way...but thats the big stuff...

Hi another update...a new exhaust went for a Milltek sport...cat-Back one over the BCS which  had planned. I  could to justify spending a couple of  hundred pound more TBH. I have had a milltek system before on one of my previous cars and was great..so booked myself in at TSR Performance and made a drive down yesterday to have fitted..TSR did a great job many thanks to them I will be going back for a down pipe and sports cat some-time soon..

Also shopping on ebay.  I managed to pick up a short shift kit...a nice little mod and has made a massive different s it has made the gear change a little stiffer but that was to be expected as I have had one before. nice bit of kit came with a choice of connections to the gear linkage and half the price of the forge one and that's a bonus...

Another update...well my edition 30 rep front splitter arrived last week so decided to test fit before painting...so at this point I was very optimistic. I have heard lots negative feedback from replica bumpers and splitters but for a £100 delivered I was willing to take a gamble..my plan was test fit then take it to get painted but has the bumper comes in black abs plastic it looks the same as the skirts and rear bumper so decided to keep it on ...and get it all painted together in one go...

here a few pics

I must say I was surprised. It fitted perfect and all the holes underneath lined up correctly. my only point is the screws in the wheel arch 1 either side are not used other than that job done.......

Another little mod...seen this fog light mod being done... I do like the uni-formal look the same on both sides so got my old lights out the shed. Very easy to do just  file down the 3 tabs for it to fit perfect..another job done.

also being looking at options for the lower rear bumper it looks a bit plain so thinking about a R32 style (single exhaust)  rear I've seen a few on ebay..as long as its plastic and not fibreglass I might have a gamble and buy one. I think it will finish off the back end nicely...

Just a quick question, whats the ride like from the Apex springs??
Is it similar to standard just lower? Or is it hard??

Thanks

Hi all...another little update I have not been a fan of the gear knob and gear gaiter for some time firstly. The gear knob is worn secondly. The gear gaiter is rubbish I don't think it's even leather or maybe a cheap one at that...so looked at the edition 30 gear knob that was good but the gear gaiter came with the same low quality leather so scraped that idea not paying close to £200 for that...so been doing some ebay hunting and found this from a 2010 Audi A3 s line sport-back nice gear knob and a high quality gear gaiter..

hi all another update ..decided to install a boost gauge..I wanted something Oem looking so went for a vent gauge pod. The nice thing is that  it's a vw genuine item. So to go with that a Newsouth performance Boost gauge I do like these gauges and they match the dash lighting perfect also brought the APR Boost Tap with the anti-buzz kit. it comes with everything you need and makes the fitting so straight forward.

Fitting it wasn't the easiest, well just removing the old turbo inlet on my own was a mission. All good now thing is very loud, have to give it a few days to see how it feels. Can't wait to see what else u get up too.

hi all... nice day yesterday so decided to get myself in the garden. Had a parcel arrive a couple of days ago a R32 style lower rear valance so i wanted to test fit it and drill more holes if necessary. Well i did need to drill some more holes like i thought.  But it's a good fit and it's abs plastic which i wanted not that fiberglass rubbish also came with the reflectors which are a perfect fit....another great ebay find..dropping it off at the body-shop tomorrow for painting fingers crossed back in a couple of days...

Is the Mk6 rear boot badge a straight fit? Do you get to the Mk5 boot badge behind the plastics in the boot?  :rolleye:
Title: Re: Deano Black Golf GTI
Post by: Deano45 on November 04, 2015, 11:31:20 pm
Hi...yeah the the boot badge/release is a direct fit the only difference is the connection plug on the back is on the other side....simply loosen the cable and attach on the other side easy....

To gain access to the back of the badge/release to have to remove the tailgate plastic ........hope this helps.

hi all... just a little update on my rear badge...I brought a new Mk6 boot release a couple of weeks ago..got that fitted but did not like the snap shut close...So decided to go hybrid like a lot of people have done already Mk6 golf badge on a mk5 boot handle also decided to colour-code it..  Slow close is so much better..And the new 3D design badge looks fresh..Also the Mk5 boot handle feels so much more quality over the mk6.

Hi... As for your question...depends on what you want to do..

If you want to replace the mk5 boot release then you would need to remove the inner tailgate plastic ..loosen the rear wiper motor to gain access ....The boot handle is held in position with x3 bolts and a power connector simply unplug that's it

On the other hand like I did was just replace the badge. On the mk6 badge to need to remove all the small plastic tabs on the back ...and leave the x1 large tab so it's a mirror image of the mk5 badge ...that it fits perfect job done....

Handle looks smart Deano! I thought removing the MK5 badge left holes in the plastic which are not covered by the MK6 badge?

Hi Jayha ....on the early mk5 badge yes ...not on the later one.. mines a 56 plate ..

Do you just remove the Mk5 badge from the boot, take the badge off and replace with the Mk6 badge?

hi all not really an update at all......but I have now fitted my EDITION 30 gear Knob which is really nice..also decided to replace the front spacers with some better quality ones from awesome just another set of 5mm spacers. Sorry have no pictures but we all know what spacers look like no biggie their..

Next big thing on the shopping list is front brakes. I did say when I got the car I wanted to upgraded the brakes lots of options I know. Don't really want to spend a grand on brakes so going down the used route and then get them fully refurbished R32/S3 items are on the cards..

Hi all....ever since i have had the car i have always wanted to upgrade the brakes..so last week i saw a set of R32 calipers and carriers for £200 on ebay and went ahead and brought them. When the calipers arrived they were not in great condition but what do you expect for £200 i guess ..Anyway sent the brakes away for new pistons and seals but decided to paint them myself. So went about cleaning around 6 years of muck off them. Today decided to give them a lick of paint i know a lot of people will say i should have power coated them and maybe i will later on..Here they are.. wish i  had a before photo they were a real mess...

Looking great! I few mods there that I either have, or intend to get in the future.

Have you removed the pre-cat? Made a decent difference for me and I know Niki tends to recommend it's done before mapping.

When are you there btw? I'm there on 30th. Can't wait!

Cheers Dave...it's getting their always stuff to do..

Per-cat delete... I know a few people have done this and got rid of the honey comb gauze stuff I don't know what kind of gains it would make but I guess it would make it less restrictive on the exhaust  gases. it gotta help?

As for the map at R-Tec. Plan was in January but it might have to slip to february now due to a few mods I want done...before I go.

loving the car Deano.

Have you noticed any difference in throttle response having the induction kit fitted. I have read a lot about people saying that it makes the car lose torque low down the rev range. is it much noisier?

need to pull my finger out and start doing some more mods.

Cheers Graham...I appreciate the comments still lots too do as always..

As for the induction kit. I heard a lot of people saying about the loss of torque low down..but to be honest it's so low not even noticeable..i was always going to remap anyway.as for the noise you do get an increased intake noise e.g the turbo spoiling and you can also hear the dump valve when changing ..who does not like that...

Hope this helps....

hi all..just another update..well over the last 3 weeks or so I have been collecting all the parts needed for my R32 brake conversion and to be fair their has been a lot to collect. when I decided to upgrade the brakes I thought buying some used ones  and then getting them refurbished would be a good money saving idea. How Wong I was. Anyway ended up buying a new caliper as the used one was not great so all in it has cost be £600 had a good deal on some brembo discs and pads.. got to say it has been one of the best mods so far...these and the standard GTI brakes are miles apart.. also had to run 10mm spacers up front  to clear the brakes ive got some h&R ones on order at the mo...

Another new set of 10mm front spacers due to the first pair not being hub-centric ...I'm now thinking do I get a pair of 10mm spacers for the rear. At the moment I'm running 3mm spacers.

As I have a new head-unit I decided to get rid of the old CD changer. So replaced it with the iPod dock instead I't looks cleaner I think much better.

I have had the R32 rear on my mind ever since having the car so on Saturday I ordered my new rear valance so now it is defiantly going ahead and should be here in a couple of days ...so now the most important thing the exhaust I think I'm going to stay with milltek new cat-back £560 at the moment but I know I can get a BCS cat-back for £600 I think I'm right in that...need a day or two to ponder on them both ...my mate has told me to go custom and save some money...I'm not so sure about custom exhausts...

Hi ..all another mini update. a large parcel arrived with my R32 rear valance yesterday...first impressions looks great and looks OEM which is what I'm after...The great thing is it comes apart like the original with heat-shield and reflectors  ....so waisted not time decided to get my bumper off and test fit ....over the moon with the fitment. Perfect with everything lining up correctly. Anyway gave the Body-shop I always use a call and dropped it off this morning ...it should be ready for collection Saturday....so that's the bumper sorted..Being thinking about exhaust options and have decided to stay with milltek .....TSR performance where I got my milltek before are doing the R32 cat back non Res for £515

Heres a few pics

Hi ..all  another update..got my new Milltek exhaust fitted on wendesday at TSR performance.. I would just like to say a massive thank-you to them. The guys did another great job..over the moon at how the back end looks now. I always thought the back  lacked something and now looking a lot more purposefulness

Also early this week I replaced my DV valve ..I noticed on the gauge I was down on boost...the old DV valve was rev c no splits to the diaphragm but I think it was leaking from the main body seal...all sorted now.... I now have boost...

Looking really mean mate! If it was a different month I'd jump on that Milltek. Out of curiosity, what did you pay for the exhaust to be fitted? I've started using a VW specialist in Bristol but have outright said they dont fit parts unless bought from them  :chicken:

Hello buddy ... Not the cheapest mod in the world  but I always wanted to do it ....only paid around £40 to get it fitted on top of the cost of the exhaust

For what reason would you put spacers on. Just curious.

HI...had to put spacers on the front to clear the R32 Brakes....it just made sense putting them on the back to make everything look right.....

No issues with handling? I've heard this can have a negative effect on the handling when you change the track.

Where did you get them from?

I'm saving for a remap but not done a mod for a while so i'm getting itchy feet!

Hi rippers.....no issues with handling at all you can't tell they are their...I have run spacers on all my cars over the past 5 years and have had no problems ...with a wider wheel track and a good suspension setup your onto a winner....also looks so much better than stock..

I brought these from PSI TUNING great company...

as for the remap I guess your going to r-tech?

That's good to know, I'll check out PSI. I'm running H&Rs on OEM shocks at the moment. Hopefully that will be good enough.

As for the remap I'm lucky being based in Essex I have AMD, Revo and a host of local smaller tuning garages that can produce some good results. I'd like to get as close to 300bhp on a KO3 as I can. RS4 fuel valve, induction kit (installed), miltek or BCS power valve exhuast all contributing.

I've brought mine back from the brink, but there's always more

No problem their...H&R springs are good. And work well on standard shocks

as for your remap ...you have a good list of places to visit....I have herd a lot of good things about AMD

always stuff to do....

Hi everyone  another small date for ya.., decided to give the car a good clean 2 bucket wash and a meguiars clay bar to get rid of all those contaminates i must say it works a treat. I then went over it in poorboy's blackhole glaze and the finished it off will dodo juice blue velvet wax...i must say i was very impressed with the finished car. i know a lot of people have recommended but they are right ..fantastic....

OK time for another little update...so ever since i got my R32 rear. The side skirts and front valance have not quite fitted in so i thought it was time to get that sorted. So the plan was to remove the old ones and get them sent for painting but found out that mine have had a hard previous life with broken brackets and cracks underneath the skirt  so to that end the bin was the only place they were going. So set about looking for some replacements came across some R32 side skirts from the company i got my R32 rear valance from.

Started to remove the old side skirts why i was doing that thought it was a good idea to clean behind the wheel arch and this lot came out.......

Anyway test fitted the skirts and then dropped off at the body-shop for painting the guys did an awesome job with a 24 hour turn around here they are all painted and fitted i must say looks so much better than that dull plastic .....

next on the too do list is get the edition 30 valance painted also thinking about getting maybe a Jetta/R line grill and a lower front Splitter..who knows.......

Hi MartK

The good new the skirts come ready to go to paint nice and easy. The body shop even commented on the lack of work needed on their part. The skirts are R32 smooth not textured like gti.

I got them from this company HZ PERFORMANCE.COM

Hope this helps ya.......

By the way them tyres look great ...i need some of them...lol

Another new set of 10mm front spacers due to the first pair not being hub-centric ...I'm now thinking do I get a pair of 10mm spacers for the rear. At the moment I'm running 3mm spacers.

As I have a new head-unit I decided to get rid of the old CD changer. So replaced it with the iPod dock instead I't looks cleaner I think much better.

I know the badge thing's been discussed to death but just for a definite answer, is this just a Mk6 110mm badge on the Mk5 handle?

I want to keep the soft close so was thinking of flatting the Mk5 handle down and painting it then sticking the Mk6 badge to it, did it need any trimming or anything?

Cheers

Hi ,ollieeee

Yes mine is a mk6 badge on a mk5 slow close handle ...colour coding is a great little mod..As for the badge itself it will require you to remove some of the tabs on the back of the badge ...it's really easy ..when finished you should be left with a large tab and small tab in the centre of the badge the rest can be removed with a Stanley knife use the badge backing plate as a guide...

Yeah it bugs me every time I look at the handle now so want to get it sorted. Ok, so presuming you have to take the front off the Mk5 slow close handle to see which of the Mk6 tabs to keep?

I've still got the 225/40/R18 on the front but will be changing to 215/40/R18 that way i can go a bit lower on the front ...leaving the backs alone keeping the 225/40/R18

Its a tricky one to get comfort and handling I suppose.

Car is looking sweet mate i think its your car anyways. If it is I'm parked behind it. My cars a mess so dirty. Yours looks like glass compared to mine.

You fitted the spacers to the front?? The wheels are really filling the arches and it looks great.

How come you've ditched the coilies for springs mate? Too crashy?

I'm on H&R springs and standard shocks and it rides quite nicely, but I keep thinking I'd like it a bit lower. Just don't want to end up ruining the ride though, which means I might have to pay big money for some coilies with adjustable damping.

hi yeah a little bit hard for me ...people have told me i should have gave them more time to soften up.. they are fixed damping set at 30% i guess standard shocks are set about 60%.....

They wouldn't soften up by much at all so you've probably done the right thing. I've found some coilovers are ok in the summer but get really harsh and crashy in colder weather. Standard GTI shocks seem to work well with Eibach and H&R springs and you still get a decent drop.

Loving the progress! Cars looking spot on!

How are you getting on with the lm reps? I've been looking at getting them myself at some stage, how has the finish on the wheels held up?

Hello buddy .. thank you for the comments

Before I even brought the golf I knew I wanted some lm's my personal favourites

Anyway the finish is still excellent but I am thinking of getting the centres painted in graphite grey..

That's quite alright  :happy2:

That's good to know, as I've been doing some reading up and there's a mixed response about them, like the fake screws corroding in next to no time and the polished lip also.

Think I'll take the plunge when it comes to getting wheels as I do love the look of them.

Another update...so last week or so i decided to get the coilovers i had brought taken off and replaced with some eibach sportline springs. It was the right decision for me as the ride was quite hard i guess if i had spent more money on a top quality set things would have been different... The ride is so much better now and the ride height for me is perfect. so the springs have had time to settle in.....

Also this week a had a large box delivered from PSI TUNING...my Ramair intake was one of my first mods i Brought. Anyway decided i wanted to replace it with some-think new as you do...so as everybody knows their or quite a few out their and prices only go up. when i got my Ramair i only payed £150 which is not bad for an intake with heatshield  combo...

So after some research and head scratching decided to go with the revo intake not only does it perform and has a great write up..but has to be one of the best looking intakes going..

Looks good on the Eibach springs, think they'll be the first mod on mine (also a black 3dr).

Have you noticed any difference switching Intakes?

What's the ride like on the Eibachs? How long is it?

Shame alot of your pictures are deleted/removed mate, ruins the thread a little :)

Hi ..you can't go wrong with eibachs they are quality made and the ride is great the sport line springs lower around 45mm on the front and around 35mm on the rear which not only looks great but also handles well too

As for switching intakes the revo feels so more responsive than the ram-air glad I have changed....

Time for a small update ...has ive not been around for a while to keep the thread alive ...first of all gave the car a well deserved wash as it had not been cleaned for two weeks. It's such a pain this time of year to keep anything clean for 5 mins...Anyway 2 days ago the drivers side rear caliper decided not to play anymore and decided to seize on me ...well that  fine but with xmas on the door step i wanted it sorted so new caliper sourced also got some new mintex pads to replace the old ones only problem with the caliper is it did not come painted red.. I could have had that option but was going to cost me an extra £50 no thanks i'll paint it myself at some point ..... fitting was simple followed by a quick bleed of the caliper and job done!

New Rear Caliper

Also been doing a bit of shopping before xmas...First of all i going to blame Dan648 be-course that front splitter on his eddy looks ace and finishes off the front end perfectly in my eyes ..so for last month i been looking at different options but decided on the INGO-NOAK splitter....This is going to stay nice and warm and will be fitted next year when the weathers better.....

Hi.. Everyone...first update of this year ...weather been OK so decided to tackle a couple of jobs on the car..first of all the driver's side rear caliper i brought before Christmas needed painting..looks so much better now with a lick of red paint...also before Christmas i brought a lower front splitter from Ingo-Noak tuning to go underneath my edition 30 valance. So set about doing that.... Depending how far forward to have it depends how aggressive it looks...anyway he's a few pics see what you think?....

hi...yeah not a bad price for the splitter and it is well made

As for fitting really easy fitted it myself

1. Splitter comes with marked drill holes ..just drill the 17 marked  holes with a 6.5mm drill bit.

2. remove your lower valance (Edition 30) from the car and line up with the splitter. mark the lower valance though the splitter drill holes .

3. with the lower valance marked drill the holes after that just bolt together all the bolt/nuts/washers come with the kit also comes with small spacers to go between the lower valance and the splitter......its a 25 min job and looks great.....
