Title: GTI vs R32 Weston Performance RR Day 2009
Post by: davefish on July 15, 2009, 01:31:12 pm

Saturday 26th of Sep 09 - http://www.westonperformance.com (http://"http://www.westonperformance.com/dyno/dyno-days/")

The 2008 Weston meet started from a group of MkV owners based in the Midlands wanting to meet up to discuss/view modifications. We decided a Rolling Road day at Weston Performance would be a good location. Soon we attracted the attention of several MkV GTI owners and took a bit of light hearted stick from MkIV R32 owners for not being invited (which wasn't the case!). Anyway, the day was enjoyable and the addition of a few modified GTI's added some spice (you kicked our buts!). This year we're having a GTI (MkV Only) vs R32 (MkV & MkIV) theme. Each side will compete for the highest average bhp figure. Ideally it would be good to have 10 a side (it doesn't matter if one side has more than the other) but we need a minimum of 5 a side. This is only a bit of fun so please don't be put off if you're stock! There are no cash prizes, just the honour of being the 2009 team champions ;-)

Titles:
1. Team with the highest average BHP
2. Most powerful GTI
3. Most powerful R32

We will also be collecting data such as mileage, modifications, fuel etc... for each participant and post up the data after the event. This could give a useful insight into which intake, fuel, remap etc... gives the best gains.

------------------------------------------------------------------

The cost is £45 per car (normally £70 when booked independently). We need 10 people paid by Saturday 19th September to secure this event (25 max). If we can't hit the number, everyone who has paid will be given a refund so there is no risk. To secure your place call Weston Performance on 01217 092 300 and ask for Paul (9am-5pm weekdays 9am-2pm Saturday). State that you wish to book a place on the R32OC RR day, pay the £45 and give him your R32OC forum username.

The meet will take place at Weston HQ (B90 4NG (http://"http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=B90+4NG&ie=UTF8&ll=52.399067,-1.801758&spn=2.560844,7.141113&z=8&iwloc=addr")) from 9:30am onwards with the first car likely to go on the rollers at 10am.

Please don't leave it until the last minute!

------------------------------------------------------------------

Weston Performance are regarded as one of the foremost testing facilities in the UK, due to the combination of their purpose built dyno cell and the Dyno Dynamics rolling road diagnostic capabilities. They have perhaps the most advanced dyno cell in the UK, so much so that they carry out controlled dyno testing and research and development for some of the 'Toca Tour' British touring car teams, not to mention many other independent race teams in the UK. Read more (http://"http://www.westonperformance.com/dyno/dyno-days/")

They're located away from main roads on a large business park with a few roundabouts so there should be ample opportunity for us to have a seat in different cars to experience Milltek, ARB's, etc... while we wait our turn to go on the rollers. I have already been and can vouch that they're a good, professional outfit.

I will call Paul each week to confirm payments but feel free to post on here once completed and I will update your status on R32OC (will still be checked with Paul).

I've just done a little noseying around on the R32OC site and found this out.

At the moment they have 13 cars signed up. 4 of these have big turbo conversions between 400 and 550+bhp

Some other R32's have around 270

The rest look stock.

If I take the rough BHP of the first 10 on the list, then their total is roughly 2960bhp, or to put it another way an average of 296bhp per car that we would have to equal.

If the R32 chaps are allowed to take their top 10 then the situation looks dire, with a total of around 3430, or 343bhp per car!!!

If we don't get 10 cars (only currently 7!) and they pick thier top 7 they would have 2680bhp or.....wait for it.......

382bhp per car!! :scared: :scared:

Our best case scenario is that all the big turbo cars don't show and we have an average of around 255bhp per car to equal :happy2:

I know it is just a bit of fun, I just like to win

This thread is hilarious

John, I can't believe you've started working out bhp predictions lol. It's only for fun and 198bhp people are just as welcome, maybe more so.. (no really, it's very secondary to just having an enjoyable day!).

Moschops, wigit, MAT ED30.. get your names down on R32OC! I’m getting dates from Weston tomorrow and will be PM'ing everyone on the OC to ask them for their preferred date(s).

Think I should go to this....not been on a dyno yet :scared:

Car up for sale although I'm having serious second thoughts as I don't know what to replace it with :sad1:

Was trying to organise a day at TSR but I've given up due to lack of numbers.

You should come along msportman - be a good day so long as we get the numbers. I was surprised to see your car up for sale, especially after what you have spent on it recently. I think you would definitely regret a sale

Friday BUMP - anyone thinking of going who wants to go needs to pay by tomorrow (Saturday 19th morning). Am not sure how many people are currently signed and paid up for this across both R32OC and here so not sure if there are already 10+ people. I did hear that it was looking borderline. So if you are going, and have not paid, please pay asap so we definitely confirm this event for everyone.

# Greenouse (Family commitments)
# Newey (paintwork issue)
# SteveP (awol...)
# Msportman (may attend)
# markymark (can't make it for some reason)
# Hurdy (can't get time off)
# richi - (coming but doesn't want to pay over phone.)

To anyone, If you're still wanting to come, please call Paul at Weston Performance on 01217 092 300 before 2pm today.

Dave - am assuming that this is on for those who have paid, rather than being cancelled. Am I right in my assumption?

I'll need to speak with Weston but if all people who've paid want to proceed, I don't think it will be a problem.

Gutted that the turn out of GTi's at this is so poor as I thought it would be a great battle.

This will probably be the last outing for mine as well as I am putting it on the market next month.

Dave,

Didn't want to post this previously as I didn't want it to effect who did/didn't go but ultimatley £45 for an organised potential 20+ RRday is a bit on the steep side IMO. This may certainly be the reason why some peeps have been put off.

Oh and I don't appreciate being labled a 'Culprit' after putting family commitments first!

Considering you knew the price (same as last year and posted in advance) whilst trying to persuade me to choose the 26th, I find this a little odd Nathan. Unless you mean you’re fine with £45 but others may not have been; in which case thanks for the feedback. Family always comes first, culprits was a tongue in cheek generalisation but the fact remains that many people said they could make the 26th and then backed out (for whatever reason). This wasn't appreciated either.

In fairness Dave I had forgotten the price and having now done a few more RR days (one of which I organised) it does seem a bit on the steep side.

I am well aware that organising these things is a real pain at the best of times and I for one am very gratefull for the efforts you put in.

People backing out of organised events on forums is par for the course, the trick is to not let it bother you!  :happy2:

I've just organised one with the local VW forum. £30 each and on a Dyno Dynamics roller like Weston's. I to would be disappointed and frustrated if committed people backed out.

For me it wasn't the price or anything else for that matter (otherwise I'd have backed out of the 'Ring tour), I had said even in my initial postings that it would depend on the dates, as I work mornings, afternoons and nights at weekends and only get 2 weekends off out of 5. It just happened that when the dates were posted (after I'd said I was interested - date dependant), they were both committed weekends and I couldn't get anyone to swap. Otherwise I would have been there EVEN though I have another one on the 10th October and a private rolling road set-up (for pre-BT log comparison) locally just after.

I can really understand Dave's frustration and disappointment and appreciate the effort he made to try and get it to happen. I hope it hasn't soured his view of the forum and I personally hope we'll be able to try again at some point in the future. :grouphug:
