Title: Golf Mods Advise
Post by: GrizzlyUK on November 14, 2018, 12:34:27 pm
Hi everyone,

My mk5 golf GTI has done nearly 100k now.
I've had a R32 style catback installed, aftermarket induction kit, bov.

I'm getting the cambelt/water pumped changed.
Some racing line springs/dampers fitted.
A boost gauge is also been fitted to the air vent.

The car has yet to be remapped and still has the original downpipe.

Could anyone with experience modifying the performance of their golf GTI recommend other mods that would be worth while before I get it remapped?
For example, would you recommend I get a bigger downpipe fitted prior to remap?
Fuel pump, etc.

I'm looking to retain the KO3 turbo of the GTI.

Thanks in advance.

Kinda depends what you are hoping to achieve and whether you have a manual clutch to consider. I would prioritise a VIS hpfp upgrade over a sports cat downpipe as it is cheaper and has no MOT issues. Gives the k03 the fuelling it needs spooling up at lower revs the k03 needs for better driveability. Maybe consider RTech’s intake carbon clean / custom remap offer?

Cheers colesey!

Manual clutch, clutch was actually replaced 10k ago?

That's good to know re: HPFP upgrade over a DP.

The goal is just to improve the standard performance.
It's not going to be a track day car, but a more enjoyable every day car.
So any downpipe sourced would have to pass an MOT, I'll speak to BCS about this at a later point, since they originally provided me with the R32 catback.

Remapping will likely be done by Storm Developments in Reading.

Ok well, best choose either a downpipe or an hpfp upgrade as the combination of both will kill your stock clutch. A BCS sports cat downpipe will cost @£400 more than the VIS hpfp internals.

Beautiful, okay!
New year, I'll look at changing the fuel pump then.
Then decide whether downpipe, sports clutch, intercooler are worth it for my needs.

I've had the car for 5 years now and can't justify buying a new car, so if I can make my mk5 more fun to drive, then great!
Thanks for your advice colesey.
