Title: My TDI Jetta Road to 350 petrol converted horses
Post by: V3trox on September 16, 2015, 09:34:06 pm
So for those that havent seen my intro thread I have had to sell my r36 passat (for peanuts) and replace it with this mk v tdi jetta. I know its not a GTI and i did really want a tfsi jetta but i had to be sensible and go diesel.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fo231%2FVindi06%2Ftemporary_zpse8hqoqpg.jpg&hash=70042fac92c4ef44dc4c2de40e2f6e84832acc42)
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fo231%2FVindi06%2Ftemporary_zpsqhub21kb.jpg&hash=261e09123dfcf1c579aa1bf9b4380ff5b7195eb5)

Its nothing special atm and its a bit of a dog but its mine (well its my companies) and i can do silly things to it without feeling guilt like with the passat.

Now before we get to the exciting engine build theres a lot of things that need solving first and i have/am in the process of compiling a big long list of things to sort out. I will edit it as i go forward. In no particular order

Sort passenger door (possibly broken into at some point)
Service
Refresh all bushings
Cheapo coilovers (bags in the future)
GTI front bumper
Votex front lip
Votex skirts
Some sort of rear skirt (could use some opinions here)
Re-drill hubs and fit wheels
Camber stuff (sorry guys im one of those people)
Re map
Clutch (depending on how well it copes with the remap)
hella Headlights (although i dont want to pay hella money :(   )
Headlight washer jets
Sort out rust on drivers side rear door shut

Once thats done it will be onto the engine [see this space]

Today i did test fit my wheels. They are 9.5j et38 work emotions that i had on my passat heres a pic
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fo231%2FVindi06%2FDSC_0556_zpsp29hi2uf.jpg&hash=1c8e6e9b9f88fc5a77327aac339b373693a03068)

Only problem is they are 5x100 and off of my old legacy. So with the hub adapters they poke out at a whopping et18 which even i cant dial in enough camber to run them. At stock offset they will squeeze under nicely with some camber play. This means i get to go through the joys of removing hubs and sending them off. Gotta do something at the weekends i guess.

Thanks, I Promise it will be as GTI-ish as i can get it, whilst still being a diesel but the engine will be slow going for a while. Currently I have recently moved house and the garage leaks and is a small lake inside so until that is done i cant actually build any engines which is a bummer. All me equipment is stuffed into the conservatory XD

Fk coilovers from fellow member @LiamGTi (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=8481). Top bloke. Paid yesterday, arrived today. 10/10 would buy from again.

Also spent a grand on a mystery mod which im very excited about. Hoping to fit the coilovers tomorrow if i can find my spring compressors.

Road to 350 horses on a 2.0TDI? Interesting  :popcornsoda:

Lots of video updates to come I hope

Don't give any secrets away as I appreciate you'll do that when ready, but what's the early thinking; Hybrid turbo, big cooler, some aggressive mapping, full DPF delete TB system and WMI???????  :scared:

I havent decided on turbo as of yet as there are quite a few options out there but darkside developments stuff is awfully tempting as it saves me fabbing up anything.

The hardest thing to locate at the moment is head stuff. Its all well and good whacking a big turbo on it but if i cant flow the air then its pointless.

I wouldnt get to excited as the mod i have ordered is aesthetic. Car needs to look the part first. I'm hoping to start the engine build in the spring time at some point and have it up and ready for summer but it all depends on how much work i can get till then. I would rather just do 1 build than build a motor to 250 then decide i want more etc

The head is important but more so on petrol ..Going down the dark side route next year

Or retrofit a 3.0 TDI with haldex then 330 horses or so looks a lot closer...   :rolleye:

Be keen to see what you can draft out of the 2.0tdi. Have darkside got more than 600nm out of the same engine as yours? Not looked for a while.

Don't! I was having mad scientist thoughts about something similar but a: no workshop for that kind of build and b:I'm still getting the hang of this diesel lark!

Onto the car. It's to wet to get the hubs off and sort suspension so spent some time on a remap.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FVindi06%2FMobile_Uploads%2F85A0D5ED-FB44-4E82-A5C3-6544F4D227C5_zpsxdbrsmio.jpg&hash=745f5faff3dd9793a41ad9757a9df79c3c9cb4f1)

Should burn the clutch out in no time

Remap killed my clutch and flywheel (1.9 tdi) and then I got a silent single mass darkside set which truly is silent. My car has the gti look as well as brakes, suspension, steering wheel etc.. the only thing missing is gti seats.

If i rag mine too much i wouldnt expect the clutch to live very long. Its just got to survive till the summer XD

Not much of an update as of yet as plans have changed ever so slightly. Hubs wont be getting re drilled to fit my wheels. I've got arch extensions on the way from murica so the wheels and adapters will go on easily. Got to spend a day at some point going over the car as its mot is november 1st so want to make sure it will make it through in one go.

Previous post failed for some reason.

Anyway. No engine mods atm im afraid.

My replica "edition 30" bumper arrived today along with the replica gloss black honeycomb grill.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FVindi06%2FMobile_Uploads%2FECA382A9-E83C-4AF0-BE62-2D2410A606E0_zpsduz2g1tl.jpg&hash=08369e3d8748077e2194ef7241337554ab3ffa0d)

definitely one of the better reps i've bought over the years. Not perfect (reps never are) but the moulding used looks correct. Problems to be rectified.

Will do a proper test fit on sunday and then prep and prime ready for painting.
I also have a set of "gti" style skirts to go on as well but I will test these at a later date

Hi guys, not much has changed. Been drawing up some plans but nothing to show for it yet.

Still haven't painted the bumper but the weekend gave me a choice. Paint bumper or fit coil overs?

I went for the latter because I just wanted to get it out the way. I don't have the strut spreader tool so I used the next best thing to get the strut out of the hub.

My arches arrived last week but short days and bad weather mean I have only been able to start it today. Although i have to keep stopping because it keeps raining then giving me about 20 minutes of dry time.

So, test fit with the masking tape (also marking holes for drilling.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fo231%2FVindi06%2F82F9323B-910D-44E3-95D4-415AA8930DB1_zpshfdhof2e.jpg&hash=320a16f1b7db6ff4852702236aff14f1687b8d6c)

I have had similar arches before for a different car (and plastic) but i usually rivet them on, however ecs handily provide some rivnuts (they are supposed to provide a tool for them but it wasnt in there so bought one) I gotta say they are a great way of riveting stuff on as it allows you to take it off without drilling out and re riviting.

The rivnut itself
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fo231%2FVindi06%2F151C61E2-AFE5-4D69-BA2A-5B1C08E9D74A_zpsxzhiqura.jpg&hash=f64c8fbb84dcb7ee49052b227ffdac2c09f12c67)

And then the bolt. Genius.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fo231%2FVindi06%2FC89F8847-A44B-466D-BC7C-738237FE9A5B_zpsovafpsdx.jpg&hash=784a9c141b82ca91733ad5c9af5ef323c998e921)

So 3 rivnuts are in and its currently raining so got to wait for that to pass before fitting the rest of the arches (easy bit) then its time to start cutting.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fo231%2FVindi06%2FA0772336-E794-44CA-9FE8-095FF15B2CB9_zps0tkhrrtd.jpg&hash=0cf710fd7112a32b017c8f48f1f3e51c56c92be8)

Interested to see how this looks when it's finished up, looks like the ECS Tuning arch extensions fit really well. Shame they don't do a kit for the mk6 Golf yet...
Title: Re: My (tragic) TDI Jetta road to 350 horses
Post by: V3trox on November 07, 2015, 04:04:11 pm
It fits quite well. Not perfect as the front bumper is a rep ed30 bumper and i also dont have any skirts to use as a reference but its gone on ok for now and i'm pleased with the overall look so far. Very....race car lol.

So i've finished fitting the other arch. Broke the rivet gun on the last rivnut in the bumper so all progress halted till i can get hold of another one. I would measure up and drill all the holes for the rear but is starting to rain quite hard and losing light. Was hoping to have all arches on today and then cut out the metal part of the arches and see what sort of spacers i will need with my other wheels but oh well :(

The ecu is out of the car at the moment whilst i tinker with it so i cant actually move it and get a better pic but heres what it looks like at the moment.

That was supposed to be tomorrow's job but I'm now behind schedule. The fronts are easy. Pair of tin snips and a touch up pen. The rears consist of inner and outer panels. Cut the outer with a grinder (or something more appropriate if u have it) snip the inner to size then weld together so it's not exactly a walk in the park but it also doesn't take a genius either.

If I don't cut it out the wheels will foul hard on standard arches.

Yup, deffo going to need some bigger spacers. Another 20mm should bring them out a fair bit. Only done one corner so far as it wont stop raining!!!

Its all fitted up and looking good (well...apart from the need for some spacers) went to the petrol station to put air in the tyres but couldnt get enough light for a decent picture so you will all have to wait until i have cleaned it for a better picture.

Nope. I even said (this is before i knew he had been chatting sh*t about my car) i can just take the rear seats out but apparently that wont be good enough. Even though his facebook status makes it sound like he failed it just because he doesnt like my wide arches...

I'm going to trim the rear quarters down some more tomorrow and make them look "pretty" because obviously people like to look under the arches to see my awesome cutting skills (sarcasm), take the seats out and take it to a different mot place. Going to get their opinion on the arches over the door thing though before i book it in.

I dont see it as a problem but im no mot tester. If everywhere wants to be really picky then i can always weld and smooth the rear doors up but thats something I dont really want to have to do just for the sake of a couple of arch extensions.

Edit: Also they are genuine works wheels

To be fair mate, what the hell were you thinking. Bolting on wide arches that mean the rear doors don't open, whilst having a child seat in the back. You're luck you've just failed a mot and nothing more serious has happened.
There's no way that us road worthy car.

Should have got the mot first bud.

Your pretty committed now so if I was you id sorn it and get the arches all sorted out and looking nice a tidy and safe and id try figure out a way to trim the wide arch so the rear door can still open. But don't trim the wide arches yourself unless your confident you wont crack or f them up.

I'm sure a body shop could sort it out without breaking the bank.

Then when they are sorted you can get your mot and keep the build going  :happy2:

I was thinking "hey, i so rarely use my back doors it doesnt bother me". I mean other than slightly bigger doors and folding seats what is the difference between this and a 2 door golf? I Fail to see why bolting arches over the rear doors would cause something serious?

You dont think it should be on the road because the arches bolt the doors shut or for another reason?

To be fair i do need to cut more of the rear quarters out and tidy them up but I didnt think anything of bolting the rears shut. My theory was that i just wouldnt use them and if i need to put someone in the back i will just get a set of seats from a 2 door. The only reason i have a baby seat in there is on the off chance we go in the jetta instead of the golf. I'm just failing to see the issue i guess.

I know it wouldnt really take much to get them cut but i dont really want to

All doors have to open on a mot including  the boot..If the rear seat and belts are in it will fall but not sure if you remove them it will pass.
If you tidy the arches up and make the doors open it will be good

Thanks. I have spoken to a few people about it and this is the general consensus. Although i could run it without the rear seats I have convinced my self to stop being such a lazy bugger and just do a proper job. After all I want it to look respectable. At least that way i can get back to ecs tuning and tell them the kit can fit a 5 door. I'm just not very talented at cutting straight lines.

Im not really annoyed it failed but to just take pics and slag it off on facebook is really unprofessional and upsetting.

Marked up and ready for cutting.

New clearance. Just got to seal up all the gaps. I should probably get the inner welded to the outer but when the arch is in place it makes the outer nice and rigid so all is good in my book. Will just have to seal it all up to prevent rust! I have also painted it but no pics of that.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fo231%2FVindi06%2FE296B282-6CB3-4D4F-B23F-4A9770D243AC_zpstwqfhohr.jpg&hash=bcf59a6a93c1474cb05c196310838716b5a4b4ea)

Now the big decisions. I used a bit of the rubber seal (that goes between the carbon fiber extensions and the car) and slipped it onto the edge of the cut extension to try and close the gap and make it look semi professional. I like the look but i will go out and try to buy a more rigid one but you can sort of see the look i'm going after.

Mate I completely admire your commitment to this- it's no secret that carbon fire in general isn't even ones cup of tea however that's the beauty of modding, you go to do what you like and enjoy not what everyone else is wanted you to do! As for that garage that's a complete joke that he went to Facebook to take the pish, I'd be going on with a print out and asking for an explanation in front of his boss. It looks a lot better now the rear doors work too bud!

Carbon fiber is quite easy to cut and shape really. Its just that moment when u move the grinder up to the carbon fiber and you know full well that if u do it wrong thats a good few £££ down the pan.

I would bring it up with the garage but i cant see anything coming of it really. They get an angry customer that they all have a giggle about when i leave. I expect they have already had enough laughs at my expense i would rather not bother giving them more

Can't make my mind up if it's better with the trim on or not,how does it look now underneath the arch now.

Its not the prettiest thing, still need to seal up and maybe skim some filler over the top to try and make it look better?

Look my rear door opens...i can take the baby seat out now

I dont mind it looking messy though. Theres no reason for anyone to go poking around under there...except maybe an mot tester. Once i space the wheels out some more you wont even be able to see up there without opening the door.

So both rear arches are now cut down to size with plenty of clearance. Trip to the diy store for some black sealant to plug up all the gaps underneath. Rub some cutting paste along the overspray to get it off, replace a drive shaft and then shes good for the rest of the winter until i get started on the engine...maybe some depo lights

However its not all sh*ts and giggles today. I knew it would happen but i cut the second arch extension wonky. Its not bad but you know...i did so well XD

So last night (in the rain i might add!!) i swapped out my offside driveshaft for a new one as the cv was on its way out and for the extra £9 of getting an used (but still brand new) one i thought sod it may as well swap the whole shaft.

Today went to the MOT station and now im good for 12 months.

Still not washed it as weather is total garbage at the moment so on my way home from a job i thought i would try and snap at least a couple of pics.

So no real updates. The only bit of news i have is the tanking slurry i ordered so i can actually use my workshop in the future as its currently a small lake where i practice my jet ski skills.

Heres a cheeky pic of the car at my local paul walker meet

Wow, so little progress :(

So ive been sitting here weighing up my power options. Insurance runs out in a few days which means, take off the road and tinker. The only problem is how do i go for more power. I initially wanted a big power diesel but after tuning a few higher powered vag pd engines i've decided I want a petrol again

So i had a few options. Do i
a:scrap her and get a 2.0tfsi jetta
b:buy a tfsi engine and stuff it in there
c:20valve turbo it

But v3trox why go to the effort of a 20vt surely you want a modern tfsi engine in there? Well you would think so but i just so happen to be stripping one of these

Its the missus old car that she has recently replaced with an ibiza cupra

So i pretty much have a whole donor mkiv to scavenge parts from. I've got all the mechanical side of things sorted. Should just drop straight in, swap cv joints over, 45degree bend coming off the downpipe out the side and she will be ready to run...After I butcher all the wiring :S

Engine free and sitting on the jacks. Some of the loom had to be persuaded to move out.

Took about 4 hours of which a small amount of time was spent being silly.

All i can say is i hope i'm never in an accident cos those air bags are so ****ing loud lol

Then after that it took ages to find someone to actually take the shell away from me. Even offering to pay but not a soul would take it until eventually i got it removed free of charge.

That was a couple weeks ago. Now I only really have weekends free and so far i have been stuck working or the weather is crap. I only managed to get the front off. I Decided to take the whole front off in one piece as i will be using the jettas intercooler, which is a complete front mount compared to the side mount on the mkiv, it seemed like a waste to seperate it all out.

I would be sorting it tomorrow but today the missus car decided to wet itself

So that is the priority so thats another weekend that will be squandered. Although i might get time sunday its meant to be raining all weekend so we will see.

You won't get a 1.8T to run in a Mk5.
It's also completely daft.

It's so much easier to get 350 BHP or more with a 2.0 TFSI BYD, BWJ, BHZ or CDL engine... The retrofit is also easier as well.

Why not sell that engine and get one of the above mentioned?

If it turns out getting the 20v to run is to much work then i will sell it off and get a tfsi but as the engine was sitting there i decided to have a go.

I will also have the bkd to sell which will in itselft pay for a 2.0tfsi but lets try the 1.8 first and take it from there.

While I appreciate your valiance by the time you have bothered trying to get the 1.8T to run you'll have wasted your time
ECU is different so you'll have to either run standalone ecu or move whole wiring loom over
Clusters are diff (not retrofittable easily between models)
Mk5 is canbus mk4 is not again sensor signals are speaking a different language (go back to my point RE ecu).

please just sell the 1.8t and buy the engine that's supposed to go into the car. it hasn't been done before for a reason.
