Title: 1st VW - Black Edition 30
Post by: Caspersmith on February 04, 2018, 05:40:37 pm
Hi All,

Picked it up two weeks ago, today was the 1st day it wasn't raining & had time for a quick clean:

Body seems in good nick, does need a really good polish.

Extremely happy with it, came from a BMW E60 535d which was mapped to 340bhp & 520ft lb so was concerned this would feel slow but really doesn't. Not sure if it's been mapped already as it does pull really well. Car is standard apart from head unit.

DSG is so good, I had the gearbox mapped in the last car but this still loads better.

Got things planned, I guess standard items, intake, exhaust, suspension etc..

Brakes aren't that great at all but see you can easily upgrade to S3 / R32 larger discs & pads so will be sorting that out.

Already installed my Vibe slimline sub & changed headlight bulbs to Osram Laser as it doesn't have Xenon's which is the only thing that put me off but wasn't going to wait for ever as service history is bang on & the money was right.

Thanks Dan(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180204/dbd8dfd25d2d698cf4ed2a90114ea183.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180204/8a9a720f9ccdef238176a63c335a2dd3.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180204/52ffaeb240d974d2ce874d42ade39ce9.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180204/330f607435994e4ee1d71d02f7760a6f.jpg)

Nice example!

You can tell if it's mapped or not if you can find someone local with VCDS.    My stage 2+ ED30 keeps up with 335 diesels and petrols easily enough.  Not sure if they were mapped or not though!

Just purchased a Ram Air oversized intake kit.

Only £154 on Amazon. Done a load of reading on this, way more expensive ones available but cannot find anything bad to say against.

Slight loss of torque lower down but slightly better higher up the rev range apparently.

After a little more noise & for the money worth a punt & will go with an exhaust when I get to that then remap.

When fitting I'll take a look at the PCV to see if it's the latest revision if not I'll be ordering the latest version along with a new GFB DV +.

Millers NANODRIVE CFS 5w-40 NT+ Full Synthetic Engine Oil to be ordered soon with oil filter.

Welcome along buddy.
For the money I'm sure you'll discover what a capable car the Ed30 is.
Sound choice on the RamAir. I had the Evoms and it was too darth Vader for me. The RamAir has a bit of that induction noise but more subtle and the price is very reasonable compared to other kits (suppose there might be some performance gain difference).
What's next on your list? 😆 It never stops...

Cheers Chigmuss.

The list is long & is getting longer the more involved I get within the VAG scene!

I've just received oil & oil filter so will be doing that soon.

I guess next on the list is rear spacers, going for 12mm & hopefully LED interior, number plate & puddle lights.

I'll check PCV when I do intake, upgrade DV. Then save up for other bits;

Suspension & bushes refresh as the mileage is 98k.

Exhaust, want a BCS power valve but big money.

Upgrade brakes

Depo projector headlights, only thing not having Xenon was only doubt about the car when looking to buy. Get H7 LED but being careful not to be too bright as I don't want the HID xenon thing. Think the MOT law is changing for these as well.

Remap!

Etc....

Had a couple of hours to spare today so manged to install the Ram Air intake.

Went for a blast..... Love it But that's the kid in me. Turbo flutter when you nail it then let off is awesome. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180216/c595bb7a26870391ef918216178fd221.jpg)

Noticed exhaust is blowing around the back box plus the rest of the exhaust isn't looking too healthy.

Bought this full BCS exhaust system second hand, it's been collected just waiting on delivery. Then need to get it fitted (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180301/e830f9a4f3f5b60ff5edb6d2b3ea3265.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180301/3dd7dbe7bd877f375d90758fe77ef3e7.jpg)

Somebody is getting stuck in  :happy2:

I forgot to say about VCDS and the ECU software...... you need to go into the Engine section, then go into 'Advanced ID'.   A standard car will have 0 next to 'Attempted' and 'Successful' flash counts.  It's how VW were detecting remaps because you can't reset that counter back to zero again.

Yeah man, loving the fact you can pick up so much for these second hand, helps keep the costs down.

Thanks for the tip, I'll get my mate to plug it in & see.

Get yourself an edition 30 front splitter. Will complete that front end nicely.  Looks like you've got a standard gti one. Replicas can be bought for about £80-100, or watch out for Geniune ones on eBay , usually £100-£150.  :happy2: Sweet ride you got there.

Yep that's a standard GTI splitter. The Edition 30 one should be colour coded and is slightly deeper. It's probably been whacked at some point and replaced with a more common second hand GTI one.

Ah man ffs!

So is it just the splitter that can be replaced? Or does the whole bumper need doing?

Just the splitter can be bought and replaced, you’ll have to get it painted.

Side note: check if the front bumper is genuine, some aftermarket ones come with the splitter moulded to the bumper and can’t be replaced on its own. Only mentioning this because if it had been hit and replaced, previous owner(s) may have opted to go cheaper route with aftermarket

Oil & oil filter change today.

Had a look whilst I was under the car, splitter looks like it'll split from the bumper so just have to get the proper Edition 30 one sorted.

Seen on ebay around £100,  after market but don't fancy paying £350 for genuine from Awesome Gti!

Where did you get the VW emblems for the keys from?  Mine's faded badly as well.

Little update, after people noticed my splitter wasn't a Ed 30 one I've bought one of Ebay.

Sprayed it myself, 1st time spraying but thought I'd give it a go as its the splitter & low down so will take some punishment.

Well happy with the finish, not perfect mind but still happy.

Not updated in a while.

Fitted the wing back in September, was easy to do thankfully, followed this guide: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=M6PtHG8CEiw

Supprised how much dirt was there! Sprayed the inside with Waxoyl, got to do the other side now.

My AC blew up back in August whilst I was sat on the M25 in traffic when it was 35degC. Moments before I was feeling quite smug looking at other people sweating away with the windows open whilst I had cool air blowing over me. BIG mistake, pipe blew, gas everywhere, initially thought my car was overheating.

Now it's got colder fixing this is getting lower on the priority list, really want to get the suspension, top mounts & anti roll bars changed to freshen up the handling.

Changed the cam follower today, really easy to do, followed a guide on this forum.

The old was one was in really good nick,  must've been changed recently prior to my ownership.

Pic of the old one.

Got new Brembo discs & Ferodo DS2500 pads I'll be fitting in the next couple of days. Decided to try this combo 1st rather than going for the big brake route as I only have a sprited drive every now & again. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181102/28d9fbc8d1d8d4707bc557277b1aa203.jpg)

Fitted the new discs & pads today. Fairly easy, obviously haven't been done for a while some bolts were quite stiff.

Definitely needed doing, old discs are well truly knackered. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181105/3407b6f7b04331da834e1b675dea7d6f.jpg)

Well not going to be driving my car for awhile.

Just over a week ago I slipped over crossing the road in the rain smashing my knee cap into three pieces.

Bloody nightmare is an understatement.

Just hired my new whip.... (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181120/c4ff402b7035c8f32f44e3b9a76a8696.jpg)

Nice little upgrade to Depo headlights, makes the front end look so much better (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190102/6d71f16ce6cac130e287cd16218f2d83.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190102/d02a8fb891d3d53d3ed9247ff167d661.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190102/794a7e358b1970e7913007d0b4454832.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190102/44019073f92d08df52ea9ab0ef05900c.jpg)

Quailty is really good, these have the electric motors so they can be adjusted on the dash as per the standard lights.

Easy to install, although I've taken them to a garage to get the beam lined up & they've said they adjusted them but cannot quite get it low enough for an MOT pass so I'll adjust the main fixings to get them down.

I'm very happy with them, Nighteye LED lamps are really good. Give off decent light output, obviously nothing on on OEM LED's on latest cars but much better than the Osram night breakers I had before.

Exactly a yeah to the day of ownership my car threw up the dreaded oil pressure warning. Was out on a drive so limped it home, didn't drive it for a week whilst I got all the new parts; sealant, pick up pipe & O ring all from VW.

Did the work last Saturday, looks like it's been done before, the sealant I took off was black stretchy stuff, not VW stuff. Pick up was blocked.

Got a Powerflex handling pack in the garage so had some time to tackle the front end; dog bone insert, lower engineer mount, antilift bushes & front wishbone bushes all changed. What a mission but we'll worth it, can feel the difference.

Just the rear bushes to do, ARB's, drop links & new suspension to buy then handling re-fesh should be done.

Also installed R8 coil packs & a rev R PCV.

Drove the car home, EML came on FFS! Quick scan & P0420 again. Cleared again for a little while.

How are you finding the bulbs? I’m looking to upgrade from old yellow halogen ones, and was gonna go the Osram NB route. I’d kinda talked myself out of LED’s after reading some bad reviews but those Nighteye’s get pretty positive reviews on Amazon, and they’re cheap! Be interested to hear your thoughts. I don’t have projectors though, so not sure if this will be an issue.

The lamps are much better than the Halogen type. Don't think I'd fit them without projector headlights though as they'd be bloody bright but that's up to you.

Update:

Easter Bank Holiday installed new AP coilovers, uprated front top mounts & bearings (TT ones so slightly stiffer rubber) new drop links.

Started at 8:30am finished by 18:30, would've been much quicker if it wasn't for the top mount bolts spinning, what a barstewards of a job they turned into. Luckily got a Dremel to get underneath & cut them.

Had to also cut a square section out of my 22mm long socket as the strut tool I bought was totally useless.

Found both my rear springs had snapped.

Gone with AP's as I couldn't stretch to Bilstein, but more than happy. Handling has totally transformed. Car also looks really good.

I'll get some decent pics up when I've cleaned my car.

Got new track rod ends to go on, just didn't have the time or the energy to change them after all the faffing so I'll get them done when I get the tracking done soon.

That'll be the front end pretty much refreshed bar the ARB. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190506/cf61ecccb2a4d036b0e2e9ccde41cfaa.jpg)
