Title: Dodds GTTDi180
Post by: dodds-gttdi on August 11, 2011, 12:20:29 am
Ok, so I introduced myself in the newbie bit a while ago. Picked up a 2004 '54' Mk5 GT TDI back in April 2011. Been stalking about here and picked up a good few ideas. The car is totally standard atm apart from the cruise control i had fitted by www.starperformance.co.uk/ (http://www.starperformance.co.uk/) in Kirkcaldy, Scotland. (I'm from Edinburgh btw).

Car has a couple of extras but is pretty plain otherwise. These include dual climate control, factory armrest and now cruise. I didn't waste much time gathering modding bits. I was fairly into the Mk4 modding business so its not all new to me.

Parts accumulated so far:

BBS CH025 Replicas SOLD  :surprised: New ones on the way!!
Falken ZE912's
Votex Front Spoiler
GTI Rear Valance with all important towing eye cover
HEL Braided Brake lines
312mm GTI brakes
Eibach Sportline -50/35mm springs

Nothing fitted yet but it's all kicking off soon. Brakes, braided lines and lowering springs go in on Friday 12/8/11. Obligatory stainless exhaust is getting a custom job on 26/8/11 and the rear GTi valance will need painted sumtime in between.. Wheels went for a lovely refurb in June and tyres are fitted.

Still on my wish/to do list:

20% tint all round
K & N induction kit/panel filter
Sideskirts, colour-coded of course
Remap. Star performance are giants in the dub world and are local to me.  :happy2: So I went for a Shark Remap in August 2011

Apologies for crap iphone pics. . Brakes are undergoing a make-over currently to become silver. The car is sage green and the wheels are gunmetal so didn't have too any options of caliper colours. Silver should blend in fine (I hope). Will update with clean pics on friday with new suspension, wheels on, and brakes. Gonna be a busy Fri afternoon.  :happy2:

Wheel beside car for colour check. Never run gunmetal wheels before so will see how it goes. In theory they should be good at hiding the brake dust.

Also the pads I got with disc and calipers are JURID's. Good pads so I hear?

Ha ha, yeah , to be honest it's been the TDI boys on here that've given me the most inspiration. To begin with I was all for making a GTI looky likey  :scared: but am so glad i didn't bother.

this forum is dangerous for spending money :signLOL:keep getting told to put a gti front on mine but  i like the front end of mine and every body is going down that route

Would an induction kit make any difference on a tdi?
Love the colour of the CH's...Mine are due a refurb soon so they possibly could be that colour.

I know what you mean about the GTI front end I keeping thinking about it for mine, but then I see standard ones lowered with the votex spoiler and debaged grille and I like how that looks too, this forum is very very bad for making you spend

Glad to see all my ebay watching buys are coming through for you!

Look forward to seeing the lowered pictures and how my BBS's now look in that colour...remember to make sure you have locking wheels bolts on next time I see you in case I'm tempted to take them back

Have you had any luck with centre caps for the alloys?

W80ody: Yeah, your hawk-eye skills on eBay, gumtree, etc are coming in handy, altho my wallet is suffering muchly because of you.  Lowered pics are coming. Just got problems at the min as my mobile and photobucket are incommunicado at the min.  :stupid: Locking wheel bolts are def gonna be used. I know you and your wheel fetish.

Demon666: I have a set of centre caps at the min. Altho only in black and silver. Ideally gonna get some japan red/gold ones in the future. If VRS_Pagey wants them you can offer them to him.

Thanks for all the positive comments ppl. I know its not a GTI but each to their own...  :P

Arch to wheel gap = perfect I think. Can't wait for the 18's.

Still on poverty spec 16's at the min as my CH's need rebalanced, the heat we had in July made the stick-on weights melt off the wheels I have stored in my garage.  BBS-on-car pics hopefully on Friday.  :happy2:

NEARLY got the wheels on. Went to fit them Friday afternoon and realised all the flat stick-on wheel weight had melted off. Alloys have been sitting in my garage since June  :ashamed:

So, they're in getting balanced. Just got a new trolley jack today, don't trust the VW widow-makers. Wheels will be on on Monday…   …also picking up some shiny new painted parts Monday/Tuesday.   will show all next week.

P.S. Last night's purchase:

Sadly they're for W80ody on here for winter wheels.  :sad1:

They look rubbish mate.........but rather than skip them I will buy them off you!!  :jumpmove:

Are they genuine CH's or reps mate?

On a different note, I notice that on your 'to do list' you mention a remap!  Have a look at this offer from Shark Performance - http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/211017-crazy-summer-sale/ - I took advantage yesterday although I went for the self tuning system which was a further £150, if you are local £199 for a stage 1 is a BARGAIN!!!  :happy2:

Yeah, i know, totally gonna just throw the alloys on the scrap. Deeply dissapointed in them.  NOT!! Unfortunately they're not real deals, but still very good quality German reps. The way I see it I would be crazy to splash out ~£1000 on genuine's just to drive them on these roads we currently have. I'm pretty pleased with them to be honest, first gunmetal finish wheels I've run and I really like the look. Now I just need tints and GTI black headlights to complete the moody look.  :happy2:

Looks like a mega-bargain Shark are doing at the min. Might go and order right now investigate...

Yup, they're just Eiback Sport -50/35mm springs on standard dampers. Tbh the ride is only slightly different than the normal springs. I run on my comfy 16" alloys  8) for a week b4 putting on the 18's and only noticed a slight reduction in comfort. Body roll has been reduced a lot now with both the springs and low profile tyres.

Now, opinions please wise people of the forum: Do you think the front is a tiny bit too low in comparison to the back? My CH's are ET45 8" wide and rub on the archers only now and then on fast & tight/bumpy corners. I've done the arch screw mod but am now thinking of sourcing a set of Eibach Pro springs (Front Only) to bring it up 10mm. It'd fit in with the back of the car and also allow me to put on my colour-coded votex valance (like a Mk4 Anniversary valance). ATM I am VERY close to scraping when coming out my driveway.

Would it look that bad being 10mm higher at the front. Let me know please!!

I'd be interested to know where the wheels are from and how much you paid mate, I have seen a few about but not with an ET45 offset.  I would love them on the vRS and ET45 would be perfect, but I can't justify the cost of genuines.  If however a set of reps can be had for a bit more money than a refurb I'm in.  :happy2:

10mm is only 1cm at the end of the day! If its not practical then change them! How low to the Pro kits go on the rear?

The Pro Springs are -40mm at the front and -25mm at the back. I'd keeb the back Sport Springs in tbh, but try and pick up a pair of front Pro's.

The wheels were a kind gift  from W80ody on here and he bought them from anoth member on here a good while back. I had a link to a shop that sold them for circa £600 with tyres. Will try and find it for you VRS_ Pagey.

Midland alloy wheels - http://www.midlandwheels.com Just give them a ring and tell them what you want, i saw a set on ebay they were selling but had another set in silver which i bought. I bought my tyres from camskill and got my local garage to fit them!

EDIT - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/18-BBS-CH-STYLE-ALLOY-WHEELS-VW-GOLF-MK5-MK6-GTI-TDI-/130565589121?pt=UK_CarParts_Acc_Wheels_tyres_Trims_Car_Rims_ET&hash=item1e6650c881

Small Update:

Got my Rear GTI Valance back last week. Disappointed it's the wrong shade!  But will be fixed soon. Needed it fitted for Friday 26th to get my twin pipes added. Valance is not 100% fitted yet, that's tomorrow's job, along with my front votex splitter.

I'll let the pics do the talking:

Title: Re: Dodds GT TDI
Post by: dodds-gttdi on August 31, 2011, 11:28:32 am
Yeah, bumper was sprayed thru a friend of a friend for 'mates rates' so he's gonna take it back in in a week or two's time and re-spray it.  There was a couple of wee bits that didn't get a full rub/smooth down and you could see a hint of the original texture of the bumper so a second rub down and paint should totally get rid of the textured surface. I'm not complaining as said mates rates were a fifth of the quoted price everywhere else. Some garages refused to even quote me cos of the textured surface.  :stupid: Gonna compare the front votex valance with the bodywork tonight. If it's the same wrong colour I won't put it on.  :sad1:

Any ideas how I can get hold of a different shade of my paint (Sage Green)? Will VW match it for me if I went to a dealer?

Well I think you should kindly gift me your newly aquired RCD 510 then

Your car's looking great; shame about colour match but hopefully you'll get that sorted.

How does it sound with the rear box removed? I was chuffed with the note that mine had when I did the r32 rear pipes.

So in past two weeks you've done:

Powdercoated the BBS's
Eibach Sportlines
Gti lower rear
Gti style pipes
Votex front splitter
Shark remap
+ a RCD 510
....i hope your working plenty of overtime!!

Looking forward to seeing it next week when I eventually get home....I'd better wash my filthy machine for a northern mk5 photoshoot

Thanks Scott, was good to see ur car in the flesh (metal). Tis a nice machine. Yeah, I'm pretty annoyed about the colour of the valance but will get it fixed next week. Thanks a lot for the CAN Gateway installation last night, especially in the rain. Thank Mrs Golfman again for the cuppa tea!  :happy2: hoping to get the RCD 510 next week (I'm away on holiday for this week coming). Will put a picture or two when I do it. Am meeting up with W80ody for a few days so will have a look at his door lights and see if I'll get them put in. No doubt we'll both be back soon enough.

Just reading back through this build thread and had to chuckle, as I am now going to be possibly the 4th owner of the CH's which I was clearly desperate to get my hands on  and you took my advice on the Shark remap!!   By the way, how are you finding it?

Hey, yeah Shark Performance is awesome! Much better than superchips any day!  lol. It has a lot smoother power delivery than standard and bags more power (see posts still to come)  yeah, these bbs CH reps aren't half getting about! Glad you like them and they are awesome looking on your car.

Few wee updates: I fitted my new wheels on Friday (BBS RD256's) wrapped in lovely Toyo T1-R's. GRIP!! :driver:

Just back from Extreme Performance Rolling Road Day. Met some lovely Skoda's there and a few Mk5 GT TDI boys.  :happy2:

Made 181.8 bhp and 310 ft/lbs on the rollers which I'm over the moon with. I knew my map had given me more power but expected about 170ish. Fastest Diesel of the day, I think. Closely followed by a stunning wee silver Fabia vRS at only 0.6 bhp behind me.

Pictures to follow

I'll have to post the video of the smoke from Dodds dyno run...smokey but made good power/torque; unlike my superchipped Tdi that didnt really give any smoke but showed a disappointing 167bhp/265lb ft (standard 146/245) compared to Dodds 181bhp/301lb ft

Yeah, just the standard 140 2.0 TDI. Haven't done much work to it except a back box delete in favour of straight pipes out to fill my GTI rear bumper.

Mines isn't the RNS-510, just the RCD-510, basically not the sat nav but most other things, I think. I'm still after a set of Eibach pro springs then my SportLine's will be for sale.

My car is sage green. Def not too common. Haven't seen another GT TDi in this colour.

Yeah, a wee bit smoke. But that was when revving the car to the redline to get a rollinh road read-out. I don't notice an awful lot of smoke when normal driving to be honest. Most of the power comes in at about 2000-3000 rpm anyway.  :happy2:

Yeah, I'm loving the RCD510.  :happy2: It takes mp3 CD's so plenty songs there, plus a 2 GB card that takes about 600 songs PLUS my 6 CD armrest Changer!! :surprised:

Plus the radio can have something like 30 preset stations.

MDI has been purchased but came in pretty poor nick from ebay. Getting returned this week for a brand new one!  :happy2: Just need the retro loom and I'm sorted. Have got an iPod lead.

To say I'm chuffed is an understatement. Very happy with the power delivery when driving the car, which is where it really counts. I'm not chasing numbers (yet!) so that'll do nicely.

I wonder if a Downpipe, or turbo-back exhaust will increase it much? Looking to put either a better panel filter or induction kit on as well so it breaths in better as well as out!  :driver:

Brakes-wise, I have the 312mm upgrade already but just with standard discs and OEM (Jurid?) pads. Will be replacing with EBC Greenstuff next as I've run them on all my cars from a 90 bhp Pug 205 to a BMW 320d 150bhp. Much less brake dust too.

Any other mods, except a hybrid turbo, I shud be looking at?

Smalal update. Votax spoiler in the post so looking to get that, my Votex front valance and my GTI rear valance re-sprayed, this time in the correct shade of Sage Green. Bodyshop are quite apologetic and are re-painting for free so I'm not too bothered.

To Do List for the winter
Winter tyres - should have some by the 25th October
Change springs - Eibach SportLines out, Eibach Pro's in
Source darkened GTI Headlights
Debadge rear of car before Big Detailing Sesh.
Give car a proper detail including clay-bar, wax and polish to protect over the winter
Touch up bubbling/rusty arch before salt gets in there.  :scared:
Refit rear valance and roof spoiler after painting

Wish List/To Do List for 2012

Refurbish BBS Alloys (gunmetal - see colour of previous wheels)
Fit Front Votex Valance (I'm expecting lots of snow so no point fitting just before winter)
Fit Darkened headlights and proper bulbs i.e. Osram Night Breakers or Phillips Blue somethingorother
Get Tints done (20% all round I think, suggestions?)

Let me know your opinion on a black front grillle or black front VW Badge. Cheers  :happy2:

Yeah, a few wee things to do. As they say,"modding is never finished!" lol.

Mostly looking forward to getting some black headlights and wearing out my brakes so I can replace them. they were new discs and pads just in July there so I've a while to go yet. Will prob go with EBC Greenstuff pads as I've had them on quite a few cars now. I can't stand the amount of brake dust I get with the OEM pads.  :surprised:

Have a spare set of GTI calipers so thinking of getting them refurbed another colour. Any suggestions to go with my Sage green car?

p.s. am awaiting another wee mod I've managed to bring in under the radar of SWMBO. await photos tomorrow (if it arrives then) or early next week.

Weekend picture. Met up with W80ody. Had a wee compare of suspension setups. Mine (the sage green car) is on a full set of Eibach Sportline Springs, stock dampers and 18x7.5 alloys with 225/40/18 tyres.

W80ody is running the exact same wheel specs (even ET 51) Eibach Pro front Springs and Eibach Sportline rear springs. There's definitely a noticeable difference in height even on the rears which both had half a tank of diesel over them and empty otherwise.  :stupid:  Have a look for yourself:

Other way around methink. My car (right) is lower by a good finger-width or more! I have Sportlines on at the min with Eibach Pro's sitting in my bedroom ready to go on. Just need to get my butt in gear and book them in. I am supposedly 20mm lower at the front (checked out true enough) and about supposedly the same at the back. But I'm prob about 10-12mm lower!

Just been out with tape measure (conforms to EC Class II standard of accuracy)  on a level surface with handbrake off and 1/4 tank.

When I had Pro's all round at the rear it was PAS-660mm DRIV-649mm now with the Sportlines at rear it's PAS-639mm DRIV-638mm

Measure without handbrake on as I was getting +/- 5mm with it on!

Also bare in mind that my springs serial number indicate they are for the 1.9tdi/1.6fsi etc with a lower axle weight so they'd probably lower my car more than 2.0tdi springs

Ha ha, as Lee said, mine's is Sage Green so sorry to disappoint you not being your favourite colour.   I had a wee bit rubbing with the Sportline's and those wheel specs but only on very rough road surfaces or round fast fast corners. Strangely enough it was all on the passenger-side too.  :stupid: You def need to do the arch screw delete mod but other than that you should be fine. They seem not as bright as my previous headlights (completely OEM standard) so I've ordered some Osram Night Breaker Plus bulbs. Was tempted by the Philips Diamond Vision but the say not MOT legal.  :sad1: anybody had any issue with the plod with them?

Did you get a votex splitter mate?  There is one in the for sale section for 100 quid.  :happy2:

http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,35517.0.html

Thank for the shout Lee but I managed to pick one up on eBay for £65. Brand spanking new, unopened in the original VW Box with all the fitting kit and instructions.  :happy2:

EDIT: Arrghh, new page! New pics up soon, I promise. Possibly of a pair of winter tyres I've bought, and another pair I'm collecting tomorrow.

I was in a similer dilemma mate (with getting bits painting before winter). Decided to go for it, if the paint job is decent dont see it being a problem.

Update:

Black headlights - fitted
Osram Nightbreaker Plus - ordered and delivered
Philips Diamond Vision - ordered and delivered
Winter tyres - bought and fitted to wheels. STILL too warm to put them on!!  :surprised:
18" BBS RD Wheels refurb - to be delivered to painter as soon as it gets cold enough for my winter tyres to go on.
Rusty wing - will take to VW same time as I go for my service. Apparently a new (better) pricing plan is coming out in Dec 1st so I'm holding my breath til then.
Eibach Pro Springs - Fitted.  :happy2:
GTI Steering wheel - to be fitted once I get my spline tool (M12) back from my mate.
Spoiler, Valance and Bumper paint - who knows when, anybody got some spare dollar?

And I've no idea what I'm gonna do with leather door cards...  :happy2:

Hey Dodds.

Just had a read through this, nice work so far. Love the CH's in the colour you had them re-furbed in, why did you get rid? I'm getting mine powder coated so they're all black (i.e. no polished lip) which means it'll be on winters until the spring..... not winter rubber mind, just some old wheels that I don't mind getting even more battered.

You get your door cards fitted yet? It's a bitch changing them but once you've done it a couple of times it does get easier.

Did you go for the decat down pipe? It's certainly something I'll be fitting when I have some spare cash.....

one more question I promise  :P how's your clutch holding out after the re-map? you still on the original one? Changed mine over before my re-map (only 105 to 147bhp) but still up to 280 lb torque which is fairly near the 300 limit on the standard clutch. If I go for a stage 2, with some other bits I'll deff be getting an uprated clutch....

woops, I appear to have written a dissertation.....

Hey Billo,

Yeah, I loved the BBC CH's as well, especially in that colour. However they had just too low an offset, combined with the springs I had on back then didn't make for a good match with my arches. I ended up getting a bit of rubbing & removal of paint.  :sad1:

Your car would look good with the gunmetal CH's (If I'm honest I've never liked black alloys).

I have a set of winter wheels and tyres (brand new tyres) but I haven't even bothered putting them on this year as it's way above 7 degrees these days. You'll love your car whatever colour you get your wheels done in tho. Just something to freshen it up.  :happy2:

Not got the door cards on yet. Tbh I haven't even had time to look at them yet. Work and uni has been hectic this last month. there's a few DIY tutorials online that show you how to do it so I should manage.

Yeah, I did go for the decat downpipe? It's the Milltek Turbo Back exhaust so full bore 3 inch (I think) straight to the back bock then thru the box and out. The tips are GT 80 style. Definitely feel it revs a little freer altho the biggest difference I felt was when I replaced the back box with a thru pipe.

My (original) clutch is doing good at the minute. It's probably a close race between that and my turbo which one will give up first!!  :scared: That is a pretty decent torque figure you have on your car for just a remap, who done that for you? Are you feeling any clutch slip at the minute? I've a friend who's run his mapped TDI on the original clutch for over 35000 miles and had no problem.

Anyway, good to see another TDI person on here. One mod I'd recommend is lower valance for the back of your car. Totally trasforms the look and there are millions of options out there. YOu can go for the OEM GTI or R32 valances altho they both have tailpipe cut-outs. If you do some good searching on eBay you will be able to find both the R32 and GTI valance (copies) without cut-outs tho.

Waiting til after Christmas to get my valance & spoiler painted as the amount of stonechips (grit, stones, etc) will hopefully be a lot less by the end of January. Plus Christmas has left me fairly skint and my insurance renewal is due in a couple of months. Saving up is all I'll be up to for a wee while just now...

Furry muff dude! I've always wanted black wheels and I love em, each to their own though man.

Is it any louder without the back box? I might consider a through pipe as an option in the future then...

R-Tech in Leicester did my re-map and RR. Highly recommend them! They were pretty impressed with the read outs, apparently I have a strong engine lol. Clutch is fine, I replaced before the map when my DMF ate itself, I now run a SMF. I get a very slight slip if I'm not too progressive with my acceleration, which basically means that I don't nail it too early on.

Yeah I'm well accustomed to trawling fleabay for stuff, can get a lot more on the German site too! Will definitely be a votex rear valance though when I get the monies together....... when I'm about 100 years old......  :signLOL:

You pair are filling me with confidence.  :scared: lol. Maxitrol, what turbo are you running now? If mine does go bang I'd bee looking to replace it with something close to OEM in terms of power output (maybe 200 bhp mark) but definitely a lot stronger/more reliable. Also are you running the standard clutch?

still on standard turbo has its been under warranty--to be fair thou its thier was a under lining fault some wher in the engine that was filling the turbos with oil--but my car as been in the garage since august  :sad1:

had it mapped to 200bhp at r-tec--was going to put a hybrid on from darkside but with the engine the way it is would of only knackered it

...recently discovered ebay.de...

hello elusive fourth alloy wheel I've been searching for for over two months:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi.ebayimg.com%2F00%2Fs%2FMTIwMFgxNjAw%2F%24%28KGrHqF%2C%21g8E8fYjq8H%28BPYRepoRhg%7E%7E60_12.JPG&hash=f7080f7ec69c8019bb244549484fd392bcf86950)

R36 Omanyt's are like hen's teeth in the UK, if they do come up they are normally way overpriced or in an un-divideable set of 4!

So, tech specs: 18x8 ET44 so just a smidgeon off BBS VZ and my BBS CH reps I had on several pages ago. Difference is now I have raised my car up so hopefully these wheels/tyres will have no arch-enemies!!

Still deciding on 215/40/18 tyres or 225/40/18, your thoughts? I still have my SEAT wheels and Toyo T1-R 225's so might swap them over if no interest in them. Waiting to hear back from a potential buyer (and waiting for my single  wheel to wing it's way from Deutschland) so might be a week or two until they are on.

PLUS I haven't decided to leave them silver or go shadow chrome. Opinions welcome. I had anthracite BBS CH's on last year and the car did look  8) I mighht go for a lighter shade this time round tho.

Still needing a service, have developed a small rattle/knock when sitting at idle revs. Sounds like a exhaust bracket (Milltek?) but I've yet to investigate.

Also badly needing a polish and wax. All to come in the next while tho...  :happy2:

Ok, so my 2 month old Hong Kong Philips Diamond Vision decided enough was enough tonight! :fighting: luckily I had a spare set of Osram Nightbreaker Plus bulbs in the house. The light is definitely not as white as the Philips but still bright(ish). Will go for a drive tomorrow and report.

On a positive note, I swapped out my 2GB card on my RCD510 for a 16GB card and spent a few hours uploading some albums. 13.8GB later and my car is now a CD-free zone!! :happy2: for a long time I had thought the RCD510 were limited to 2GB. Not mine apparently.

Awaiting wheel delivery. I've got it's tracking number from Hermes Germany and eagerly checking it every day. :-D

Nice!  :happy2: Thanks for the info Daz, I'll go load it up with more tunes at the weekend. It does slow down considerably with more data on it tho so I think I'd prob be best getting my finger out and fitting the MDI kit I've have tucked away since September 2011.  :surprised: Darren, do you know if the MDI needs coded in to work with the RCD510? How difficult is it to fit the loom for it?

Posted a video in response to a Milltek query. My question is, can anybody tell me if my turbo whine/whistle is particularly bad?

Having looked around at others' car with GT80 tips I realise mine are way too far inset into the bumper. Will fiddle around with it next time its on the ramps.
I had the car serviced at Autohaus Edinburgh (http://www.autohausedinburgh.co.uk/) a week or so back and they mentioned my wishbone rear bushes were worn and tired. Have been considering the WALK bushes recently. Can I fit them myself or is it a garage job? I'll be getting Autohaus Edinburgh (http://www.autohausedinburgh.co.uk/) to do the Alignment afterwards anway, or am I better getting them to fit the bushes too?

Not been up to much recently as uni is busying up at the minute. Exams and report deadlines taking upmost of my time.

As if!!! :signlol:

Managed to bag a 2008 3D Boot badge on eBay for £16 a while ago. but alongside my Armrest MDI, Votex valance and boot spoiler, it hasn't been fitted yet. I'm hoping to get a professional detail at the end of the month so am putting plans into place to get them painted and fitted.

Ideally I'd like to colour code the boot badge so I set about splitting the chrome emblem from the backing. I'd saw one on another forum so I kinda had an idea where all the clips were. However, no amount of prying got it off! I ended up taking a knife right round the edge where the chrome meets the black backing and the badge just fell off! :happy2:

I've never really liked pressed plates to be honest. Apart from being harder to clean and denting easily they are more expensive and easier to fall off. I'd have to send my V5C off to Dubmesiter too and I'm not comfortable with the possibility of the Royal Mail losing it on the way. :-S

On another note, my new plate certificate came in the post. The DVLA are using an almost identical car to my previous one on their receipt/thank you card. Pictured is a silver mk4 anniversary with BBS CH alloys (19" and possibly replicas!)

I'm loving the little furby sound at the bottom of the rev.......very quirky!

But I do think the exhaust could cause your turbo to blow, best you get it off and send it to me - you have my address still?  :innocent:

I've never really liked pressed played to be honest.

I got my pressed plates from Dubmeister this morning. Only ordered sun/mon. My V5C and my driving liecence came back with the plates. I sent mine recorded.

Carbon Resin Gel plates arrived on Monday. One of the 'lifetime guarantee stick' letters was half unstuck. :stupid: hopefully their replacements will be here next week.

On a plus note, had my WALK installed today. :driver: took 24 miles to get home from work, which is only 3 miles from home. 4 Wheel alignment sorted some big camber out on the back wheels too. And finally MoT passed with flying colours, no advisories!! :happy2:

Plates ordered from ebay turned up nearly two weeks ago but it's taken me until Friday to go to the DVLA office and get my new registration put on the car. Fitted the plates yesterday, what's your thoughts?

I've blanked out a number on the pic but they are fully legally spaced when the number is there. Carbon Fibre Resin Gel Letters (pressure-washer-proof) which looks the nuts imho. My first name starts with 'S' and the 00 DDS could  be mis-positioned and helped  to spell D0DDS, my surname.  :happy2:

These are at 30%, nice and noticeable at dusk however pretty unseeable during the day. I have a poverty spec CECM so next on my shopping list is a 30 byte module.

Ideally I'd be able to use fogs as DRL's, an easy VCDS mod with the right hardware. I'd go for it properly though, changing the fogs for LEDs and correct housing/reflectors.

Anybody selling a 30 byte CECM by chance?

Cool. I dimmed mine abit more than they were because I had someone tell me my indicators were on all the time. I was like, I know lol.

I have a 30 byte cecm and couldn't get the fogs as DRL's to work. Also tried on a Gti of Gazon69 who had the option but that never worked either. I believe there are 2 types of 30 byte though. A 3C0 which I probably have and a 3C8.

Phil Miller is selling one in the ads sections at the min I think.

Genuinely don't think you need that mate. Put it like this, I have the 20byte controller on my GTI and I can use fogs as DRL's with my whiter fog light bulbs.
Do your checks before you splash out on any more expensive CECM's  :happy2:

Yeah, I've seen some photographs on here and you'd think the people had changed their dipped beam to orange bulbs, they're that bright.  :stupid: Mine are fairly subtle at the min. I thought about turning them up when I first done it but am glad I left them at 30%.

Yeah, there are two types of CECM (or 3) highline, midline and poverty lowline. I'm ideally looking for a highline 30 byte module as then I'd have the most scope for modding my car further, i.e. cornering fogs and all that jazz.

I've PM'd Phil Miller and left a post on his for sale thread but no response yet. My car is an early version (2004) so I'll need a CECM designed for more door cars with 4 controllers in it. If Phil's one will do the job I'm all for buying it.  :happy2:

I've had a look through all my available bytes and bits and cannot see the option to use Fogs as DRL's.  :sad1: When I open the Central Electrics section my byte 17 is a '00' and blank when I click on it. There are no more bytes after 17.  :stupid: I will need to read up some more before definitely deciding on one. Thanks for the advice.  :happy2:

Ok, so unusual to my slow approach to 'fixing' things on my car, I managed to acquire a 30 byte Highend CECM this week from Golfman, and it's fitted, coded and on the go. Will work out all my extra options tomorrow in the daylight and post some pics.

I used this tutorial for fitting the CECM, absolute pig of a job as there isn't even 5mm spare room to manouver anything. Managed it tho, without breaking anything:

http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?3173886-DIY-Highline-CECM-Swap

Meanwhile I got my Votex spoiler bonded on this week, my front Votex and rear GTI valance re-painted and even fitted onto the car. Pics to follow.  :happy2:

Collect another set of 17" Monza's, this time for myself (see page two for the first set). Excellent bargain price on them, guy described them as 'Golf Horseshoe alloyz' on Gumtree.   lol. Come with two part worn continentals, two new budget tyres, all bolts, locking wheel nut AND key.  :happy2: Tyres will be coming off, two going onto my Lexus and two I might put up for sale here. Thinking of squirrelling away these in my garage til I find winter tyres for them. Then sell off my original 16" wheels/winter tyre combo.

Ok, here’s what’s been happening recently. I picked up a puncture at the weekend (a wee screw in my rear tyre). The tyre never lost on pressure so I didn’t get it fixed immediately. On Tuesday I took leave of my senses and popped into my local Kwik Fit on my way home from work. :stupid: The place was empty so my car was taken in straight away and put up on their two poster car lift. My concern began when the grease monkey didn’t know where the locking wheel key was. After I pointed to the boot I stood next to the car and watched him work. He noticed the wheels were ‘painted’, an aftermarket exhaust and the unmissable WALK bushes. I told him a few things about the Golf so he was sure to know I was at least semi intelligent towards car, etc. He couldn’t get the wheel off (probably due to it being powder-coated and being slightly tighter on the spigot. I have managed to remove all 4 wheels (for cleaning) before so I knew it wasn’t that tight. He decided a heavy rubber mallet was needed and after a handful of bashes the wheel came off and promptly fell some distance to the ground. Like buttered toast it landed face down first with an audible clunk. I didn’t complain immediately because I needed them to fix the puncture. Kwik Twit’s are well known for deciding not to fix the puncture just because they don’t like the look of the customer. They wouldn’t fix it anyway, stating that I must have run on the tyre completely flat (no chance) and that it wasn’t repairable. They then offered to replace my 5mm Toyo T1R with an asymmetric (to compliment my 3 other directional tyres) Ying Yong tyre for a reasonable twice the normal price. :scared: I politely told them where to go and left with my spare wheel on. I got home (5 mins away) and opened the boot, where they’d slung the wheel, and took pictures. With these being time-stamped and showing that they’d thrown my wheel on top of my personal possession (clothes, jigsaw puzzle, tools) I phoned the Thick Twit’s manager and told him what had happened. I was asked to come back and shown them the damage the next day.

Yesterday I went back and got the manager to look at the wheel/tyre in my boot. I specifically hadn’t touched it or moved any of my things underneath in order to show him exactly how I found it. His first reaction was that the damage was old, “See how there’s bubbling round about the damage there.” So I explained that powdercoat doesn’t bubble. “Well it’s rust then” he claims. My engineering degree helps explain to him the incredibly low iron content that Aluminium alloy contains (zilch). Finally I took him the workshop floor and pointed to him the dent in the floor where my wheel had landed and where flakes of my exact colour of wheel powdercoat still were. He conceded that yeah they were to blame and asked me to leave the wheel with them and he would get a company to repair it. After asking who it was (I deal with a few local wheel companies) he stated it’d be a ‘professional’ company, I pressed further and he replied ‘a sandblasting company’. After some more to-ing and fro-ing I have eventually managed to get it repaired at the company of my choice, i.e. the company who originally powdercoated the wheel. And Thick Twit’s will foot the bill. They also offered vouchers to compensate for the poor service. I told them I’d never set foot in a Kwik Fit branch again so no point taking the vouchers.

Result: one wheel re-finished as new. Puncture repaired by powder-coating company (no fuss) and I had a chance to have a good butcher’s under my car while it was on their lift. I’ve noticed some of my tyres are low so will be ordering new tyres thru the powdercoating company. Hopefully getting the wheel re-powdercoated and new tyres on next week.

Rant over.

Sorry to hear about your troubles mate. This is a prime reason why I hate taking my car anywhere and have someone else work on it. Not all, but most have no proper skills for this sort of work and take no care at all. It wound me up just reading it. Can't imagine how frustrated you were. Glad the outcome was the right one.

Thanks for the comments. Hoping to put my wheel in to get fixed this afternoon. Means I'll be running on my spare for a day or two though.  :sad1:

On the plus side I got a good look at my tyres and saw that the front two were on the limit and the rear two have worn down on the inside to about 1mm. This is due to me lowering the car a lot last August (Pi Springs), then onto Eibach Pro Springs earlier this year and not getting the rear camber corrected til April.

So I ordered 4 new tyres yesterday at 12:45. Camskill offer a same day dispatch if ordered before 1pm so I was hoping to catch that. Normally they deliver in one day but it can take up to 3 so they say. Tyres arrived at 11am today. Spot on. Sterling service (again).  :happy2:

I went for Kumho Ecsta KU37's (225/40/18 92W). They get a good write up for their price and are assymetric instead on my directional Toyo's they'll be replacing. I know Golf's normally sit on 92 Y tyres but my car is never gonna see 300kph (Y-Rating) or even 270kph (W-Rating).

I'm going a roadtrip up North of Scotland on Saturday for a week so will report back after that (800-1000 miles).

Not too many pictures from last week but plenty miles driven. 1039 to be precise!!  :happy2: Had a great week of virtually no rain (once, for a couple of hours) so I got plenty of driving done. I went up with a Mk6 Golf and Honda Accord but toyed about with a whole range of cars; Fiesta Zetec S, Corsa VXR, MG ZS 2.5 V6 to name a few.

Tyre report: My Toyo's weren't down to the limit but when I changed them the car seemed a completely different animal. Going to asymmetric tyres meant a much quieter ride, a lot more comfortable and grippy beyond my requirements. The car was filled to the roof with people and luggage but still performed well in terms of handling, economy and power (saw off a few boy racers in the week). All in all, a good trip.  :happy2:

Last night, I fitted my 17" Monza's with Nokian WR G2 Winter tyres. Only temporary as my Omanyt's are off whilst one get's re-powdercoated (Kwikfit )

Car feels quite different. The 17's are slightly comfier than the 18's (obv) but these tyres are great in the wet. We've had a flood of water ith last day (airports and major roads closed, etc) so they've been fully tested in the righ conditions. Looking forward to when the temperature drops below 7 (probs late October) where these tyres will really shine.

Will update with pictures when I get out of work. I'm heading straight to VW today to get my wings checked for warranty replacements. Fingers crossed!

Got a call from Inch VW yesterday to book my car in for replacement wings. So far they are FOC and the dealer is working with VW UK on the bootlid. They presumed a 70% contribution from VW UK but will fight them to get it to 100%. I haven't asked them to do any of this and I didn't even need to show the dealer the Rust pdf to get them to offer me wing replacements. Big  :happy2: for Inch VW Bathgate.

Wings booked in for the 15th of October. They're gonna repair the botlid for £160 also (70/30 contribution from VW UK apparently). I'm going to post up final rust pictures just before the car goes in and also ask for my wings back afterwards.

Here's a weekend picture up the Cairn Gorms

Cheers Ed, I see you are selling up also. I'm looking to save a large chunk of the money from the sale for a house/flat next year so I'll be going for something cheap cheap. I notice you can pick up a tdi mk4 golf in good condition for around £2k. I have another car (Lexus IS200) that I'm hoping to trade in and hopefully pick up a nice example Mk4.  :happy2:

I'm back!! After 6 months running an e46 BMW 320td Compact I've come to my senses, sold up and got back into a mk5!  :jumpmove:

Went all the way to Aberystwyth (the back of nowhere from Edinburgh) and bagged myself a '56' plate 170 GT TDi. I don't intend on modding it as much as my previous Golf, famous last words, but I'll keep you all updated anyways.

Spec:

2006 '56' GT TDi 170
5 doors
Tornado Red
Grey interior
Armrest with storage
RCD300
17" Classix
Soft Close Boot Badge
23H9 Recall already performed
Tiny amount of bubble on one front arch, full service history though so I'm hopeful VW will do a repair under warranty
Red front Grille
Silver Headlights

Pleasy please?  It looks pretty tidy now. Quick question (then I promise I'll start a new thread for my 170) was there much work involved fitting the 140 milltek to the 170. I'm most interested in the downpipe as the 170 downpipe is a mega price!  :surprised:

Haha. Cheers mate. The system is exactly the same for the 140 and 170's. The only difference being the downpipes. I resold the downpipe then got the Darkside Developments DPF delete. I haven't seen the Milltek version but Alex at AKS who does all my work said it was better made than the Milltek version. It is also cheaper even if you can get discount from Milltek.

That was partly the reason I went for it. It is a lovely piece of kit. A little too nice to be hidden underneath. Fitting it though, you will need a map to suit so its not trying to regen without the DPF being there.

Just because....
