I figure this is possible but what's involved?
Bit of a speculative thread to ask if anyone can point me in the direction of anyone who has done it!
-
straight swap just remove mk5 and fit mk6 .
bases are the same unlike mk7 golfs
i have a mk6 gti dsg shifter here to fit to my mk5 gti but i have it seperated into pieces to send the base away to have hydro dipped.
-
Well that's great news. Guess I better find a mk6 GTD DSG shifter then.
-
Interesting you mentioned that as my existing plastic ring doesn't seem to fit right and it's a factory mk5 dsg shifter. You can see inside on one corner which doesn't look great...
-
Very brittle, won't be surprised if it's broken
-
Ah handy, Guess I'll take a look at it and hope it's superglue-able. If not... bet it'll be a surprisingly expensive thing to find.
-
Have you considered an mk7 gear shifter? There were a few clubsport ones going for £100, would be interesting to know if the swap would be similar to a mk6 one going into an mk5
-
I doubt it's plug and play and easy to replace but I'd love to be proven wrong and grab a mk7 one.
-
Perhaps you can be our first test bunny lol. 😜
-
nice upgrade ;)
do you know if you can just change the knob itself?
im after a later style knob in my mk6 R
thanks

Most of the MK7 golf parts will not fit the mk5/mk6 without solder the circut boards, changing wirering etc etc since that car is total differeint build than ours..
I know someone who got the mk7 golf cruise control and wiper stalks fitted to a mk5. But that's alot of work since you have to trace the board signals to the functions from the stalk to mk5 base. So not something everything can do hehe...
The mk7 mfsw is still not plug'n play in the mk5/6 but by far the most easy mk7 item to retrofit
-
Mk7 Cruise control/stalks into the mk5/6 would be quite the feat mhmm, bit off topic but damned that dedication.

Could anyone shed some light on how they fitted the mk6 gti dsg gearknob to their mk5 gti?
I know i posted above that it was a straight swap but I'm now finding out it isnt.
The plastic rod on the mk5 doesn't rise up enough to sit the steel pin on the mk6 dsg gear knob into it.
Any help would be appreciated.

Seen that video but the plastic rod on mine is a hard plastic and it refuses to come up enough to let the steel pin sit into it.
I dont want to damage the plastic rod making it impossible to refit the original part.
-
Only thing I can think of is check if the knob is fully seated down to the bottom (lol)
Maybe click down the plastic retaining thingy that you lift when removing....
Done mine a while back now but iirc I didn't have any issues with refitting the part you mention...sorry can't be of more help matey
-
thanks for the reply.
its much appreciated.
might give it another go see if i have any success.
-
Got it sorted.
The little metal pin in the gearknob has a low postion i hadn't put it into.
Once i did i got it to fit.
Well pleased. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180109/d9039b562fc90d30b7e99e7a0f88445f.jpg)

Looks smart, where did you get the part, part number? And I guess... cost?
Intrigued in getting it done now!

Got the gearknob on eBay. Cost me 26 pounds if i remember correctly.
I dont have the part number to hand but when i get a chance i will lift up the gearknob and get it for you.

Ended up calling 4 breakers today and all of them would only sell the gearstick/gaitor/shroud with the whole gearbox... hah.
Admitedly I was looking for 2014+ facelift scirocco cars for the least worn options but guess the search continues.
May check with TPS for their quote as the car only recently went out of production.
-
You seen the one I got listed in the classified ? @spicypixel (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=18579)
-
I have now! it's on the consideration list.
As it's not urgent as mine is in working order, checking around for Scirocco (both regular and golf ball versions), Later year mk6s including Ed35, and later Eos'.
I should really see if TPS have them boxed for reasonable price though, local one is just down the road.
People who've done it, did you not have to change the orientation of the hole in the plastic as outlined near the bottom here:
