Title: GVK's Edition 30
Post by: GVK on November 06, 2020, 11:58:04 am
Thought I'd add my car on here, so compiled this thread from posts on other boards.

Picked up this low mileage (66k) Edition 30 at the end of Jan. 2018

Had car mapped today at local place Maxtreme (http://www.maxtreme.co.uk) in Wisbech - , pre map health check dyno run measured 239hp 310nm (VW state 230ps 300nm)
Post map power run 310hp 404nm. (297 lb/ft) Transformed the car, pleased with it's performance so far!

Jan 2020

Had the car 2 years today. Covered 10k miles in it so far.

Only things I've done are :

Both rear ABS sensors & hubs (twice on nsr)
Left hand intercooler hose kept popping off. (New hose £70!)
Plugs and coils causing misfire after Stage 1 remap.
Passenger door lock faulty (new one to fit) (£megabucks)

So overall not too bad for a 12 year old car.

June 2020

Been putting off getting this sorted but today was the day I got on with it and fitted my passenger door lock. As some of you will know on a mk5 Golf you don't work on the inside of the door with the inner door card off , you have to take the door skin off the car!

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49987643398_609000f0e6_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2jaeJQE)Door (https://flic.kr/p/2jaeJQE) by GVKmotorsport (https://www.flickr.com/photos/gvkmotorsport/), on Flickr

All well and good but my door was deadlocked shut and the motor was just bouncing between unlocking and locking, must have taken about hour and a half of banging the door, pressing the unlock button and pulling the inner handle to try and pop it open. Eventually I was going to give up and tried it one last time and it popped open... result!

Once the door was open and the door skin off you have quite a bit of room to work on the latch.  Couple of tips that were useful I got from Humble mechanic's vid on You tube was to turn the TX20 on the door handle 12 times to release the door lock/blank and to set the tension of the handle by putting the spring on the lever inside.

All sorted.

Nov 2020

Had full service done on the edition 30 today at Maxtreme, my local specialist, no problems other than finding a fuel filter with a date stamp of 2007: with what can be best described as mud inside!

Future plans

Looking at getting a set of Bilstein B8 sprint shocks to compliment the Eibach springs.

Lovely looking ED30 mate!

I feel a set of Xenons will really set off the front end!

You've just reminded me about my fuel filter  :ashamed:

Great looking ED30 GVK - glad you sorted the fuel filter - had mine done a few years back for peace of mind, even being run on Shell for all the time I've owned it (since 47k)...

I'm still at disbelief at how bad VW locks & regulators are - it's like they want to make money out of bad parts... :fighting: Mine had a new  drivers door lock when it started making really weird noises. I replaced about 4 locks on my mkiv - one about 2 times (only replaced one 2 weeks before it was written off...)

Good power figures - I have Bilstein B8's on mine with VWR springs - it is a hard ride around town, but on the A & B roads, it really is fun!!

Thanks Dave. Glad to hear your thoughts on the B8s, I think that'll be my next spend.

Car sounds like a friggin wedding car at the moment towing tin cans!! Rear disc back plate has fallen off.

Also gone out in car this morning to find a cracked windscreen. Stone flew up following a car on a B road the other day, now 6" crack on ns.  :jumping:

New tyres day today, gone for the new Good Year F1 Supersports that seem to be having rave reviews.

They're brand new and need scrubbing in obviously, but even from a short drive home from the tyre shop in the wet, less TCS intervention accelerating in 3rd than before, which is promising. Dull 'looking' tyre though, all of them look the same these days?

Looking good  :happy2:  I had it in my mind you have a black one for some reason, but I'm liking them in Silver.

Not unusual to see an ED30 parked up at a Shell station

I know what you mean about the look of the SuperSports. Look a bit strange on the sidewalls but the tread pattern is pretty much the same across the board now.

Thanks Kev, very impressed with the tyres so far and they've only done a few miles.

Was going to hunt you down if they were crap  :signLOL:

As I have posted in your thread, the feel of the turn in on these F1 SS is on par with the track tyres I used to run on the mk2!

You should take it to a detailer to try and blend the back quarter if it’s not a good match!

I had the same problem with my satin silver mkiv. Tony Payne's bodyshop got it spot on, but others didn't. I am sure no-one else noticed, but bugged me! Apparently there were 7 shades of satin silver, being pearlescent. I would have thought reflex silver would have been easier, but obviously not!

Small walk round.

Going to do track day soon, my first for about 10 years!! So to get the Edition 30 ready for a day its going into Maxtreme my local VW specialist for Superpro ball joints to give neg camber, EBC orange race pads and a brake fluid change using Brembo 5.1 fluid.

Look forward to thrashing it around Cadwell park.  I've been driving like a loon on the road lately, and when people are coming the other way on B roads when i'm using all the road it's not good!
Title: Re: GVK's Edition 30
Post by: GVK on July 09, 2021, 11:28:42 am
Guys I'm getting aP0299 underboost code, on the Edition 30 freeze frame data showed at 6700rpm it was only making 1020mbar. Did some high load logs earlier when roads were quiet, it's making 1.5bar atm....Feels quicker than ever too.

Not smoke tested it to see if its got a leak, but the requested and actual boosts seem to match? Diverter valve flutters sometimes, get a rattle from guessing wastegate on start up ?
Title: Re: GVK's Edition 30
Post by: G-olf on July 09, 2021, 08:00:10 pm
Hi,

6700 rpm is quite high up the rev range. Even if its target boost is 1.5 bar through the midrange I doubt you would want to hold that amount higher up. It normally tails off to protect the motor.

Although the code suggests there's something going on
Title: Re: GVK's Edition 30
Post by: GVK on July 10, 2021, 03:11:02 am
It's had this code for a year or more, i can never feel a lack of boost and generslly it used to hold 1.3 bar all the way through going by old logs.

I'm not complaining as it's going rrally well just like to get to the bottom of this code.
Title: Re: GVK's Edition 30

Also logged airflow and got a peak figure of 252 g/s - equates to 315bhp, which isn't far off what it dynod on a Maha when it was mapped. So its going very well.  :driver:

I had to put some Texaco 97 SUL in yesterday as i was too far to get to my local Vpower station that I always run. So I chucked a bottle of Nitrox octane booster in too... contains methanol and exhaust stinks !!

Sent the logs to a mate who works at Ecutek in London, his repluy was this -

Yes, because the parameter for deviation from target to actual boost is set narrow or your turbo is simply getting tired or chocked.

Just interested, Did you manage to sort the under boost code?
Perhaps if you're going back to the same guys that mapped it they could do a diagnostic run checking for boost spikes or areas where it cannot meet target. If everything is working ok and no leaks they can then adjust the parameter so this doesn't keep flagging up.

Nice looking car btw  :happy2:

I will have a word with them, i had someone answer my thread on TFSI tuning Facebook group who also said its a software issue when max boost 2500mbar is requested, on stock MED 9.

It only throw that code at 130 kmh in 3rd...  :innocent:

Thanks, its going in for some track day mods tomorrow.

It can be modded that it doesnt go in limp and show 0299 without removing dtc. Its a Softwarething and needs to be done if max is requested ( med9 ecu - 2550mbar )

Car is much improved .

Had super pro ball joints fitted to give 1.8 degs neg camber

EBC orange stuff race pads.

Geo set up and brake fluid change.

New caliper on ns front as old one leaked! .

It goes round roundabouts like it's on rails.  Can't wait to try it on track.

Top work as ever from Paul & Liam Maxtreme Ltd

Getting fuel cuts at full throttle. No fault codes just stumbled in mid range pulls. Do I need a HPFP?

It’s quite possible, have a read of this thread - www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=14350.0

I have a stage one k03 car, which spools up earlier needing more fuel, and it felt stronger with the VIS pump despite no changes to mapping or fprv.

Is the boost still holding 1.5bar? Easier to see now you have the gauges.
Its normal to get spikes but if it holds 1.5 that's quite a lot. Its possible it cant fuel enough.
Are you sure its only got a stage 1 map on there? should a stage 1 request 1.5bar?

Yeah the MAP sensor only reads to 1.5 bar gauge (2.5 absolute) but it doesn't matter.  I've requested and run 1.7 bar boost (gauge) with no problems before. Have a chat with Vince at Stealth as he can explain it better than me. It's not a big deal.

What RPM is the fuel cut occurring?  Sure it's fuel cut and not the ECU combatting compressor surge? K04s exceed the engine's VE at approx 3000rpm if running greater than 1.4 bar and the ECU goes into 'what the f'ck is happening here mode', which feels like an abrupt stutter, and then the power resumes.

Stock and Stage 1 don't hit that problem because they only request 0.9 bar and 1.2-1.3 bar respectively.  It's why I keep banging on and on like a stuck record......just don't do 2+ maps!  You can pull back the N75 duty around 3000 to get around it but it just feels like a nasty flat spot when you do that.

Dunno how you got -1.8 with the SP BJs, most I could get was -1.2

You definitely need a HPFP if you're running 1.5 bar regardless!  I recommend the Integrated Engineering one as the piston shaft is the same diameter top to bottom, which is a lot stiffer and stronger than the usual method, but the VIS one isn't too bad for the price.

Would keep it if it would average more than mid 20s running about locally! (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210906/0ae53a28396f2e506b9fb605aa67f85d.jpg)

GLWS  :happy2:

I think you might miss this one!

Sticking with VW for your diesel or going BMW or Audi?  Those 335d Bimmers absolutely shift......but the maintenance bills are substantially bigger, and more frequent, as will be trips to the Shell station

I would probably get an A3 TDI for it's MUCH better build quality over the Golf, but it looks about as exciting as a plain scone, so a Golf GTD would probably be my choice......and then get one Darkside Development's fast road packages for it.  Sprinkle on the all the usual Bilsteins and what not and you won't be far off the Ed30 performance wise.

Plan is to get a GT sport 140 then the usual mods remap Darkside egr delete, Eibach springs, super Pro ball joints etc.

Tried to find your car and couldn't using filters. Just noticed you've listed it as a regular GTI 198bhp. GLWS. :happy2:

BBS Pescera, red stitched steering wheel, half leather seats and door cards, 'edition 30' sill strips, 'edition 30' ally trim, remote dump valve, body coloured bumpers and skirts etc.

Nope, definitely not an Edition 30

So this gentleman rang you just to say it wasn't an Edition 30? No other questions, or to query the listing could be wrong?  If so, what an absolute ring piece.  Market places are for trading, not for passing stupid comments to the sellers! It's the same with people commenting on price.  If you can't afford it, don't waste thread space with "You'll never get that for it".  I see it all the time in Amazon reviews as well with people commenting on how expensive stuff is, especially Apple products

Anyhooooo, if you're not in a hurry to sell it, I'm sure an amicable person with common sense will come knocking soon  :happy2:

She was a no-show  :slap:

Went to local WBAC as they gave an online valuation of £7305, BUTgot there and they said the car wasn't registered from new as an Edition 30, it does just say Golf gti on the log book - must've been a personal import.

So I have to chase DVLA to get the details changed now.  :fighting2:

DVLA said that it could take up to 4 weeks to sort out, i'm desperate to get rid of the thing now its for sale lol  :slap:

Luckily I have letters from VW UK customer services to prove its an Edition 30.

4 weeks to print off a form, gotta love bureaucracy!

That's good then.  Would WBAC still take it with those letters and re log it themselves?

Just checked my V5 as I remember there being some similar issues with other peoples from past threads, and it does indeed say "GTI Edition 30 230", phew!

Been offered swaps for this, ideally I want cash but this little A3 could be a bit of checp motoring....1.6 TDI 110ps

I would personally avoid the 1.6 and go for the 2.0tdi. They are as flat as a pancake to drive.

Using OBDeleven app,  I've successfully coded in remove seat belt warning, 40 secs coming home lights BUT ASR off with 5 sec press of ESP button 🙂 was not supported on my ABS system....

If I sell the Edition 30 I'm going to get a winter beater Fabia VRS and strip it out for a track day car. Carry my bike and tools about in it.

Good move in terms of handling  :happy2:  Wide track goodness.  Does it have the DCC dampers?  Should do if it's a GT diesel.

Decided to buy a MK6 TDI 140 for the missus off the back of this.  They drive very well indeed.  Hopefully pick it up tomorrow providing nothing ominous shows up on a VCDS scan.

Quite interested in doing some diesel mods.  So much nicer to drive around town than my ED30.  It actually has some torque below 2000rpm
