How to Add Speed Camera Locations as POI's on the map display of the RNS-510 Touch screen Navi.
This is a reasonably technical process and I will try to help anyone where possible but can't guarantee to always be able to solve the issues, I got this to work through trial and error to start with!
Firstly a big thanks to the various people on VwNavi.com who originally shared this info. Especially RDS++ who created the application that make this process a lot easier.
Original Thread where I found the info - http://vwnavi.com/forums/showthread.php?t=7358
What you need / what I use: -
1 – Original RNS-510 Navi DVD (I am using the v3 disc but this should work on older discs)
2 – PC running XP or Vista with a DVD Burner
3 – Blank DVD’s (I used DVD-R’s)
4 – A CD/DVD ISO creator program (I use UltraISO)
5 – The following Applications: -
i. A VI Type Text Editor (I used WinVI32)
ii. POI Inspector Application from RDS76 on Vwnavi (see thread above for download info)
iii. POI Editor (from http://www.poieditor.com/)
iv. DVD ISO Burning Program (I use Nero v8)
6 – POI Speed Camera Data (available from various sources either subscription based like PocketGPSWorld or some free downloads on the web, google is your friend!)
Stage 1 – Create an ISO image of the current Navi DVD.
Open your ISO program and insert the disc.
Select the Make CD/DVD Image option from the tools menu.
Create the Image as a standard ISO file.
Once finished leave the disc in the drive as you will need it later.
Stage 2 – Prepare your POI data
The POI data needs to be in the ASC type format, here’s an example of how this comes from the likes of PocketGPSWorld.
I now open each of the files in the POI Editor program and create one ASC file for each of the categories I want to display on the RBNS-510.
So for me I add all of the fixed camera types into one per speed limit type (i.e. one file containing all the fixed camera locations for 60mpg speed limit), I then also group the mobile camera locations in to on file and also the same for the traffic light cameras.
NOTE – You can only have a maximum of 10 icons types on the map view of the RNS-510 at any one time so this is why I group mine like this.
To add data from other files/camera location open these in separate window in the POI Editor program and then copy and paste the relevant data.
Stage 3 – Create IDX Files for RNS-510 Disc
Open the POI Inspector program
From the drop down at the top select the DVD drive where you current RNS-510 mapping disc is loaded and click on load.
Now select ENG from drop down that will open.
You should now have a screen like this: -
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FStevep_010%2FRNS510%2F13.jpg&hash=3d756a6996ae171c39fba3dc185ff4d1b77e97ed)
Now expand the section you want to add the cameras to, this will become the place they are listed on the POI map options in the RNS-510 menu. I used “CAR AND TRAVEL†as the base category and create a sub folder under here for “Speed Camerasâ€Â.
You do this by right clicking on the group and selecting “Add POI/Group Categoryâ€Â, then select “as 1st Childâ€Â. Now set the “Group Category†flag enter the relevant details from the category name and select a file to be used as the icon. (Again have a Google search and you will find various sources for these icons).
Now select the new group category you have just created and right click on it again. Again select “Add POI/Group Categoryâ€Â, then select “as 1st Childâ€Â. You are now creating the entries for each of the camera types you have created the ASC files for. For each of these do not click on the “Group Category†option instead enter the details as before (camera type name and icon file to use) and now select the ASC file to containing the camera data for this type )as created in Step 2).
After a few seconds the “saved†message should be displayed. And the screen will refresh to show your newly added camera type.
Repeat this for the remaining camera types.
Stage 4 – Create updated ISO Image
Firstly copy the CDROM.TOC file from the root of the Navi DVD and open the file with the VI Text editor.
Now update the volume number and increment this by one, make sure you don’t add or remove any extras spaces in the file. Now
save a copy of the file for later. (In my example I am at 6324, but you will probably have a lower number, this is due to me creating several versions of the disc already).
Now start the ISO program again and open the ISO file you created from the original Navi disk earlier.
Next right click on the disk title and rename it to the same number you put in the CDROM.TOC file.
Now copy in the new version of the CDROM.TOC file you have just created to overwrite the existing file on the root of the DVD image.
Now expand the TPD folder and click on the ntcWeu_eu_20070806 folder (name of this may be different if using an older disc)
Now from the folder there you ran the POI Inspector program from ealier you should have a sub folder called “localsave†-
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FStevep_010%2FRNS510%2F12.jpg&hash=b28722195d6f46f6295c642e893c4cf0ea6f7b42)
Copy all of the contents from this folder into the path you have opened in the ISO program, if prompted select “overwriteâ€Â.
Now save the image in the ISO program (i would recommend you save it as the same name as the disc title).
Stage 5 – Burning the Disc
Once the image creation has finished you cna now burn it to a disc using your preferred burning program. I use Nero and always select the slowest speed available for burning the disc.
Stage 6 – Loading the Updated Maps to the RNS-510
Once you have the disc ready here the steps to enable the features.
First restart the Navi unit by pressing the three highlighted buttons below
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FStevep_010%2FRNS510%2FIMG_0965.jpg&hash=d1bb2f435769eaa97a7569cfd6a5f23fc5833461)
Once the unit fully starts up again insert the new disc. After a few seconds the following message will be displayed.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FStevep_010%2FRNS510%2FIMG_0964.jpg&hash=4e3ab1ef75e1922dff7c148fd9063c785ce6c56e)
Next you will be prompted with the following message, select "Save"
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FStevep_010%2FRNS510%2FIMG_0966.jpg&hash=808b9d5c52f3a8304a81ab90d3501ae0cb058267)
The navi will now copy the updated maps to the Hard Drive of the unit, this can take upto one hour.
After an hour you need to eject the disc and restart the navi again.
Once back up and running press "Setup", and then select "Map"
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FStevep_010%2FRNS510%2FIMG_0968.jpg&hash=f919f27009d05e22e3beeca26af26f5cfc14e8a5)
Now select "Map Details"
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FStevep_010%2FRNS510%2FIMG_0969.jpg&hash=f72425c517b0afa3a24341a749d5786fb389991d)
Then "CAR AND TRAVEL"
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FStevep_010%2FRNS510%2FIMG_0970.jpg&hash=d0f3a49dbb1eb9e20d66da044b9d26a9024a66bb)
Then "Speed Cameras"
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FStevep_010%2FRNS510%2FIMG_0971.jpg&hash=7d2e561df25f00a6b8d52cf7ea6a33df6a22a0f6)
Now tick the icons you wish to display on the map view (up to 10 icons).
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FStevep_010%2FRNS510%2FIMG_0972.jpg&hash=82dc52e96f2b49d40dfef8766776315d87ead3d9)
Press "OK" to confirm your selections.
Now restart the Navi once more.
When the systems loads back up the icons will automatically display on the map as shown below: -
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FStevep_010%2FRNS510%2FIMG_0973.jpg&hash=6cd8ecbd1a43a603753c65d8091d990c8b707639)
I hope you find this of some use :happy2:

-
Great write up! Any chance of getting hold of a disc?
-
Update, the How to guide is now complete with the final instructions :happy2:
-
You da man steve excellent work, thank you for sharing this cant wait to do this on my RNS510 :happy2:
-
This is great - I will provide an additional post once I have gone through the process.
Before then, I'd be interested to know if there was any way of providing audible feedback when a speed camera POI comes on the sat nav screen - similar to some of the Tom Toms.
That really would be the icing on the cake.
Thanks,
Mo

Surely this should work with the mfd2 aswell? its just a disc update with new poi the mfd2 is just getting info from the disc and already has poi on it so in theory should do the same has the rns510???
Has anyone tried it on the mfd2? if not I would be willing to have a go

Darren
Sorry Darren but the format of the data on the discs is totally different and from the research I have done it's isn't currently possible to do this on the DVD based MFD2 unit's.
-
Hi I did have a go any way but couldn't even make a backup of the original dvd on ultraiso???
Darren
-
Thats part of the issue, the older VW navi discs has some basic copy protection as well. :fighting2:
-
arh that explains it then steve, do you think it will be the same with the teleatlas dvd? ive just ordered the 2009 disc with TMC but surely teleatlas wouldn't put the same protection on has what VW would????
Cheers anyway Steve
Darren
-
All seems to work, but I want to reorganise the new POI descriptions that have been set up (ie I want to get rid of the various MPH cameras and integrate into one. How do you delete the new POI's
-
UPDATE
I have had a few questions about this so I thought it would be easier to post the details for everyone.
There is now a V4 mapping disc (Western Europe) available for the RNS-510, which from what I have seen is just a mapping data update.
The format of the disc is slightly different to the v3 discs so some of the process for creating POI's for speed camera's is different.
It is possible and I have been able to in the last couple of days to get it working, but it required a patched version of the POI inspector. These details can be found in various threads over on VWNavi.com. Be aware most of the details are in dutch or german so it's no an easy process.
An new version of the POI Inspector program is due out shortly with some additional features so the whole process should get easier in the near future.

-
I downloaded POI Inspector 3.5 and alls well now done 2 different discs and both went on fine.
Going to get V4 and sort that out now
Cheers for the how 2 again Steve
Darren
-
I'd be interested as well plz. My local VW dealers have just told me that my V4 disc has arrived - hurraaaaaaaaaaaaaah!
Can't believe how long it took them.
-
Local dealer principal just borrowed us a v4 disc to do the speed cams for him :happy2:
Darren
-
Picked up my V4 disc today. Put it in..asked whether I wanted to update, selected YES, then something about temp or save, selected save.
After all of that..nothing really spectacular has changed. Full postcodes searches are still not supported. I guess some behind the scene updates to the maps have been made.
Anyone, know what has been updated/changed in the V4 disc...? A bit of an anti-climax...
-
Forgot to mention my V3 disc's title was "Volkswagen DVD Navigation".
The V4 one is titled "Volkswagen DVD Navigation CY" - wot's the CY for? Just intrigued as to what that means...
-
Once you have mastered the process of updating POI's for speed camera locations then you can do Shell Stations for that beloved V-Power (or Tesco's for Super99) - http://www.gps-data-team.com/poi/united_kingdom/petrol/Shell_Petrol-UK.html (http://www.gps-data-team.com/poi/united_kingdom/petrol/Shell_Petrol-UK.html) Got these on my TomTom (I run TomTom software on my N95 8GB) - but process is exactly the same.
-
Haw no! some thing else to put on this fantastic piece of technology...its not bad cos I get updates free of charge :jumping: so if a new disc comes out I just borrow it off local dealer who my mate works for and update the RNS and do a copy of the disc for the speed cams, obviously the dealer gets a copy for his own use :innocent:
Darren
-
Thanks Stevep :happy2: Ive got the V4 disc. Really needed the speed camera info. I will have a go at this 2mrw. :driver:
-
Hi Steve! can you tell me where i can get the list of speed cameras from mate :happy2:
-
Couldn't i possibly buy a blank dvd off you :happy2: that maybe somehow has all the info on :jumpmove:
-
Is there any way to make the POI alerts audible?
-
i wondered about that, it would be a massive bonus but i doubt it!
-

Currently not possible but agreed that would be a big bonus :happy2:

Hi there Morty,
Thank you for your offer to help! I have piles and i......Ha! only joking mate.
I would love to know exactly how to add the Speed Camera's as well as other POI's and icons etc, but it seems rather difficult! I have the B version RNS510 with the V4 maps!
Is there any easy way to do this?
Thanks,
Carlo.
-
To be honest I followed Steves excellent write up @ the beggining of this thread and managed to get it working. If you get stuck on a particular bit then just ask on this thread and someone like myself or Steve will be along.
Darren
-
Dam, you are clever!
I got my RNS510 without a dvd but the nav still worked(unit now)
What dvd version would be best to get and easiest for my cusin to load the cameras on?
Also recently my sat nav hasnt been pointing to where I really am, I've tried all the normal things, the arial is conected and everything.?
Many thanks
-
V5 is the current version :happy2:
-
it is although im told v6 is out ?
-
True but I can only comment on the ones I have tried and are working :happy2:
-
The sat nav I have just purchased has all the latest maps on the hard drive - is this a good or bad thing? And can I enable the speed cameras?
Ta
-
Oli you can enable to speed camera's only by doing a new modified disc like what Steve has done in this thread.
Steve I missed out on a V6 disc the other day on ebay.de I think it went for about £110 :surprised: Im hoping my mate can come across one? Q4 2008 so should be new upto date maps on there.
Darren
-
....and where/who might I be able to get one of these discs from ? :drinking:
-
I have one Oli. Im in southampton
-
Cool, how many beer tokens would you like?
-
Not sure what version map it is, bought from SteveP with the speed cam locations installed.
If your ever passing southampton Oli, takes about 20-30 minutes to install.
Once its on the hard disk of the Rns, thats all you need mate.
-
Cheers mate, no chance of me borrowing it or having a burnt copy? If i pay for posatge and burning costs?
:happy2:
-
Pm me your address and i'll pop it in the post if you like?
Gota go find it, Now where did Mr Hedge put it :signLOL:.
Will let you know when i find it Oli :happy2:
-
Much appreciated - PM sent
IF/When you find it, is it just a case of putting the disc in and it will overwrite the old map?
-
Pm me your address and i'll pop it in the post if you like?

Ok, started the process off...got as far as creating the ISO image from my V4 disc. Can some one provide a link to download the latest POI Inspect0r program plz?
Also, where is the best place to get the speed camera ASC files from...googling returns websites which you have to pay for the downloads... I'm sure this info. used to be available free previously.
Thanks in advance.
-
Have a search on Vwnavi for current links to POI Inspector.
As for speed camera data I have tried a couple of the free databases and found these where pretty useless, so I just got a subscription to pocketgpsworld to download theirs
-
Ive just got my disc, do I just put it in the drive and it does it all itself, or do I have to do something specifiac to load the map?
Cheers
-
just insert it mate and i think it asks you if you want to load that map or summat. takes bout an hour tho :happy2:
-
Cheers
-
I've given up for the time being...that is until I get a V6 or V7 disc.
-
All you have to do is ask for help Mojo

All done and uploaded correctly. Very pleased

I used that PimpMyNav software. It's one of those lame Wizard type setups, but it actually works well. Takes no effort at all.

Hi.
Using this superb step-by-step guide I have added the speedcams to my rns510. Unfortunatelly, I dont know why, but now I cannot update them and I cannot update also the maps. Everything seems to be fine, but the message "Do you want to save......." does not appear. The system freeze to "Please wait".
Could you help me.
Thanks.

Steve,
Great writeup.
I know this thread is kind of old but the icons.zip file you uploaded seems to be damaged and it won't open.
Can you check on that?
Peter

Hi Steve, I'm having difficulty trying to download the icons. Any chance of a reupload?
-
Total novice here, just installed my rns510 version b at the weekend, amazing bit of kit! Just wondering I didn't get my v7 disk when I bought it and being useless on p.c's is there anybody who sells all the POI and safety cameras here?
Thanks!

You can buy them if you sign up to Pocket GPS World.
-
Hi Stelth, can you buy the disks without having to input it all as in the 1st post?
-
Not legally you can't.
-
Hi Steve, would you know where I can stumble across one?
-
Can't be discussed as it's illegal!
-
Though it was being discussed already in this thread mate?
-
What the thread tells you is how to put a disc together yourself on the basis you already own a legal copy of the VW Maps.
-
Cheers for clearing that up steve, but when I bought my rns510 it came with 7.2, do I have to wait untill the next update is here and then buy that one so I physically have a DVD?
-
Could you not ask the dealers for the maps disc?
-
Isn't that buying something that I already have? have seen a few V8's on eBay, do you think should go for that Stealth
-
v8 is not out yet for the rns-510. it may well be the version for the mfd2.
-
Yeah it was Stealth, have found a 7.2 disk on gumtree, so might try and do Stevie's wright up (God help me) lol
-
It ain't difficult, just time consuming.
-
Yeah had a look through, might try it at work as have got a mac at home and cant see anything mac wise, cheers again and sorry for all the questions mate :happy2:
-
on another note with the rns510, when i copy my folders of music over to the hard drive, it duplicates i have one set of songs as it should be, and another with all the songs with eg 01_oasis_Lyla_.mp3 is this something im doing wrong in copying them over?
-
Will this work with V7 disc??
-

I guess you're copying the music onto an SD card on a Mac? You need to remove the hidden resource files..
Hidden Cleaner 2.1 (http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/27416/hidden-cleaner")
If you 'eject' the SD card by dropping it on to the Hidden Cleaner icon in your dock rather than the usual method, it will remove all the nasty bits you don't want and leave you with your music.
Hope that helps
Paul.

Thanx in advance :happy2:
Dave.

Try there Mate
Please don't post up links to illegal downloads. Could bring this forum into disrepute. VWNavi was previously shut down by VW because of this.

Oh wow!
I was wondering why speed camera's never came up!
I'm gonna have a go in a minute!!
Thanks sooooo much!!
Dave

Ahhh didn't work :sad1:
I suppose I'm gonna have to find a v8 disk from fleabay... When I ordered the RNS, the maps came pre-installed with no DVD.
Unless anyone around Sunbury/Staines has a DVD I could borrow for a couple of days?

Yes but you would have to download your own speed camera POI.

does any one have the most updated POI.DB3 ?
-
As far as I'm aware, none of the maps have speedcams included on the OEM disc. You have to add your own, which is this walkthrough.

is it possible to upload your databas?
