Title: Chris's Mk5 with Hydrolics
Post by: chrisr763 on December 04, 2012, 02:38:27 pm
Hello! Bought my Mk5 1.9 Golf TDI Sport golf over a year ago now. Name is Chris and I live in Yateley! I thought it was about time I pulled my finger out my  :booty: and wrote somthing!

Pretty much straight away got modding and realised the bonnet was covered in stone chips. So i got that done by VW ... £300 later (thanks Dad) It was perfect.

I got it done at the same time VW replaced my front wing under warranty for rust, pretty common on the MK5 platform. I also bought a bonnet bra that ive used once to help protect it :P Which I sold promptly after.

I got the car lowered on JOM coilies,

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs516%2Fchrisr766%2F3AD7EFF5-DB1A-4536-AABB-6CDEF5FEA564-3218-000003032C35DC47_zpsc3d33ec1.jpg&hash=53821c46a36aa20ba73dca919a1b8695c2f6d6f5)

Sorry about the poor dark photo there but that was the only day i was free, and trying to clean the car in the sun is a PITA!

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs516%2Fchrisr766%2F934D8485-7E7C-4126-835F-33CEFCBF3ADA-3218-0000030DCB14DC0E_zps2a6a6b5f.jpg&hash=da0c57b9015a2dff424e20dde003e1e3e529ed2a)

I did a few other cheapish mods, including going mental with a roll of carbon vinyl wrap as you can see....

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs516%2Fchrisr766%2F167DAA35-4DF3-493E-B229-6CD673E8FF93-3218-00000303179AC505_zpsfec2ddc6.jpg&hash=0b5b2c404d39166e395a9f2a4c43ba9cc2ef4888)

Now the steering wheel really needed doing as the bits undernneth were peeling.

I had an RNS510 in the car but it was broken, so out with that and back in with a new Sony HU, somthing i know well.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs516%2Fchrisr766%2F5A4BB35B-560C-4B85-9D42-A1D26D02A76B-3218-0000030303A8F766_zps5f68bc43.jpg&hash=a983e1362d2d7109a7aac62f6af6340b4234f5f6)

I then decided the car needed some wheels, and after falling in love with some BBS RS Reps....

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs516%2Fchrisr766%2FFA094EFC-3CCB-4420-B33A-EFA481DE6648-3218-000003034147DC04_zps568897ac.jpg&hash=cae59d1cd691a070a757169c3208f239c4a4256a)

What a difference a set of tyres can make. Although im still quite annoyed i didnt get 18/19" wheels. But thats somthing for the future.

The back had far too much space and since they were maxed out on the JOM's i decided to get some FK's from a fellow forum member.

Thanks for reading so far. Back on the standard VW wheels for now over winter! Sitting much lower and level than before now on the FK's

Looking foward to the new year and should bring a lot more modding!

All in good time Chris, with the weather being so bad its hard keeping mine clean let alone getting mods finished. Most of my chrome is off the car for wrapping but the rubber is too cold to get it back on the car.
Are you mounting the plate back on the newly chromed grill or elsewhere on the front?

Im thinking hanging it on the centre grill, or magnet mod. Or both

Yeah it does, cant wait to get it painted and re-chromed or whatever so its near perfect.

On a side note, you would have my balls if you knew how it was fitted  :ashamed:

It itsnt to everyone's taste. I've fallen in love with it, and because the bumper is metalic, it looks like an R32 for some reason  :P

Cant see the colour differences in the pictures. Nice Xmas lights.

Are you getting a small front plate?
I bought a sticky on plate from ebay to stick to my bra, but not been brave enough to fit it yet. Bra only on for Mon-Fri motorway miles.

Keep the updates coming.

Thanks, I am thinking about a bike size 'pressed' plate, or just running my pressed plate with magnets... We shall see when its all together properly

The colour diference is only noticable if your actuallt interested in cars, otherwise you probably wouldnt realise. Regardless, its getting painted.

Ive seen a smooth chrome grill from JOM german site:

Anoyone used this? Worth a go?  :ashamed:

Looks good bud, liking the chrome front tbh. What do the joms ride like, ive always found they've been great on other cars, well not as bad as you would expect for the money anyway. Thinking of getting some so i can save for air!

I found the JOM's to be very nice. I noticed a very harsh change in the ride when I changed to FK's, perhaps this was due to running a lot lower?  :innocent:

The front springs knock a little and I believe (although I have not done this yet myself) a cure would be to sleave the top and bottom part of the springs. For their price I love them, wouldnt have chosen any different apart from the back not going low enough for my liking.  :rolleye: Other people have had mixed opinions.  :happy2:

Yeah the knocking seems to happen on all of the, after a couple of weeks/months! The shock comes loose inside so it just needs tightening again, my mates been running them on his leon for about 2 years, his go very low and he has room for lower and thats been the case with all of my previous experiences with them. Did you remove the helper?

Well the fronts didnt have a helper spring... they still have about an inch of thread left. The rears were as low as possible and still with arch gap :( Would have been pointless removing the cups as the JOM ones are tiny!

I quite like Pearl Blue, but navy blue is my favourite colour anyway!
Didn't do much to mine aesthetically but looked ok (check pics in my sig).

Yep your car is coming on, I found that dark tinted headlights made a nice difference on this colour.

Have you took the rear adjusters out? I've heard you can get abit lower without them.

It's not the rear I'm unhappy with, it's the front. My rears have loads left on the back, I could easily tuck the tyre to the wheel rim.. the fronts are down as low as possible.

See I changed my back JOM's to FK's because the back wasnt low enough. My front has an inch of threads still showing... Il see what happens if their not seized

I heard someone say that the streetline fk's are the same as joms, im guessing this isnt the case?

The shock bodies may or may not be the same but the springs are definitely different.
Rule of thumb is the FKs go lower but ride more harshly. The JOMs go low enough to actually look "low" and are more comfortable.

Some xenon style headlamps will really set the front off too :D

Plan is to fit the splitter and wind them down some more. Maybe take out the rear adjuster & replace with the JOM one which is tiny :)

The back is on Fk's, and the front still had 1cm ( 5 threads or so ) to go down. But my engine would have been literally on the floor.

I might remove the adjuster from the rear as the FK one is quite big compared to the JOM one... MORE LOWS!  :innocent:

They are 215/35/18's I think  :P Smallest 35's ive ever seen but im not complaining. There only cheap tyres but not to fussy as I wont be running them all the time.

It's getting there... I'm not 100% happy but will get those buts sorted, just need to get some decent wheels and get the skirts & rear bumper mounted.

Alright @xjay1337 (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=7542)..I agree it was about time I pulled my finger out and did some whoreing for you guys.

First things first was to get me sitting comfortably... Bought @th3_f15t (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=8969)'s old interior and steering wheel. Car is so much more comfortable to drive now and the GTI wheel is much more aggressive!
