Title: MFSW Buttons
Post by: StephenED30 on August 28, 2010, 03:21:13 pm
Have managed to pick these up from flee bay,

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FStephenChapman%2FEdition_30%2FIMG_4416.jpg&hash=8184e02205ad01f2bbd7c2f601dd1a5baf510c59)

What I want to know is are they all right to fit to my 57 reg Edition 30 DSG + highline dash. I have the paddles on the steering wheel so the way I understand it they should just plug in and require coding. Is this correct.
Information on wiring is
Left button = VW  3C0959537B 1QB

RIGHT BUTTON = VW 3C0959538C 1QB

            TAS DE 500405769
           61618391A01215705000802 R
   HW 002
Just for info the controller is marked
Stand : SW 005 HW 0006
Datum : 4 349
TRW NR. : 61618392B00
VW-NR : 3C0959542
Any help appreciated + do not have access to VCDS to Tuesday to have any info read from the car.

The buttons look right but they are the wrong style for a 2007 car.

MY07 onwards have an outward facing button interface, same buttons but they're designed differently, don't think it affects functionality but for retro-fitting purposes.

MY07 onwards

Your right they are the pre MY 07 but am not really bothered about that, just if they will work correctly. If the correct set comes up at the right price later I can always change them.

Not sure whether they will code correctly, or get all buttons doing the correct action once coded.

Did you price up new mfsw? or New Buttons to suit model year?

Thanks Saint Steve, no i did not price up correct buttons, but i got these for a good price so could always sell on if they dont fit.

TBH, best person to ask is Darren Mortygtdi about whether they are possible to code correctly with your setup.

Other then the colour of those buttons might look odd if you have a Black steering wheel/airbag on an earlier ed30 or a more Grey'er version if you have an 08 plate or later eddy.

Just been out to car to have a look at the colour, just took it for granted that they are all the same colour. As it turns out the steering wheel air bag cover is black and I don't think they will look out of place, original covers look not quite as black if that makes sense, just have to try and see.

I didnt know if your wheel/airbag was black (same as mine) or you had a Later eddy that has a different colour to ours. Tis Grey instead :happy2:.

Stephen they will be fine mate, they should work without any coding as your car already has the paddles and I think the coding is on the same lines.  Get them fitted then you can then see if you need coding.

Well as per usual Darren you're right again, just plugged in and all working. Menu button did not work to start with but after locking car then going for a drive to make sure paddles worked, locked car again and now menu button working. Only button not to do anything is phone button (no phone kit fitted).

Stephen - what's involved in fitting these please?  Is t a case of pulling off the blanks and plugging these in or is there more to it than that?

Thanks

M.

10 min job, pop off airbag module. Blanking covers are held in by 1 torx screw T25 i think? Then its a case of just plugging the new ones in (on DSG model)

Removing the Airbag
Drop the steering wheel all the way down and extend reach as much room as possible.
Turn the wheel one 1/4 turn to the right from straight ahead position
Now using a flat blade screwdriver unclip the airbag by placing the screwdriver into the hole on the back of the steering wheel and lever the spring catch in to the centre, Now turn the wheel 180° and repeat, the air bag will pop off. Horn may sound so best to disconnect battery.
The wiring comes from the flappy paddles and plugs into the blanking pieces that are on the steering wheel at the moment and from there the ribbon cable goes down to the controller, this does not require changing, just unplug the flappy paddles and remove the plug with the ribbon cable, remove torx screw  remove this part of steering wheel. Plug in the new buttons and then the flappy paddle wiring into the replacement buttons, it will all self explanatory when you remove the air bag.

Hope this helps, Steve  :happy2:

Hi All,

First post, recent mk5 gti owner.

Happened to come across this thread after installing MFSW buttons to my Mk5 Gti dsg (2007 South African spec).

I’m running RCD360 radio with the MFSW adapter wiring.

Everything felt like it connected well as far as I could tell but after connecting the battery none of the buttons work. I haven’t taken it for a drive other than a few meters out of the garage to reset the dash lights.

Does it need to do coding or reset anything? I have vcds but unsure where to troubleshoot now

Any help would be appreciated thanks

Yes and you need to have the compatible steering control module fitted as well, as yours is a dsg it could be OK but being SA spec you can't be sure. Have you got the VCDS vag com diagnostic software?

I tried fitting these to my 08 dsg a few months ago. The buttons worked fine but once fitted my paddles wouldn't work! Had to take the buttons off in the end and the paddles started working again. If anyone had any ideas would be grateful to hear them.

Mine is a late 06 DSG -
I didn't install them by the book - too excited to get them, battery & air bag were still attached - but it did generate faults that cleared in VCDS.
IIRC the buttons just worked and no issues with paddles.

@Gti182 (https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=102467) - just do an autoscan in VCDS and then go into each module to clear the faults

Hey @LC5F (https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=49808)!

Bumping this; I just installed MFSW buttons on my 07 GTI. I have Cruise Control, DSG and paddles already, but the buttons don't work. No faults, installed them by disconnecting battery and leaving airbag connected (although it was a pain to work around it dangling there haha).

Buttons light up but no buttons work. CC and paddles work perfectly so no difference in that sense.

What's your take - needs coding, or needs new control module?

Sadly, not gotten around to it yet. It's a bit of a hassle (as well as an expense) to hire a vagcom for a day to code it, and I haven't been scraping in money lately so it's on the backburner for now.
