Title: Exhaust time!
Post by: Mrstridey on June 25, 2015, 06:26:44 pm
After working all the hours under the sun this month I have decided to put the overtime money to good use!
Have been umming and ahhing about this for a while but I'm gonna go an exhaust upgrade
I'm after a nice low burbly grunty noise
Also - i'm often up quite early for work and dont wanna be 'that guy' so don't want a fart cannon!!
Probably going to have about £550 or thereabouts to play with!

Hope you can help!

Dan

You're probably in cat-back price range there rather than turbo-back, so don't expect any big power increase. Replacing the downpipe, and cat (with de-cat or sports cat) is where you'll release some power.

BCS are very popular on here, they do a Powervalve system that is quiet and civilised at part throttle, then nice and meaty on boost as a valve opens that bypasses a silencer.

Milltek are also a tried and tested brand. A few used systems come up for sale on here, and a full turbo-back exhaust with bigger downpipe may well come up within your budget.

Between the two, the consensus is that BCS are possibly better quality, but Milltek are still very good. If you go for Milltek, their 'resonated' systems are a bit quieter than their 'non-resonated'.

Hope this helps!

thanks buddy!

I was under the impression that the BCS powervalve ones are only available as a turbo back system? Or am I wrong?

From everything I've been reading i THINK i want/can afford a cat back non res system of some sort.

Just want to get the right one!

Do a little more overtime and get the turbo back 200cell BCS valved system
Nice and quiet off boost - group B rally car on boost
It worth the extra effort and expense - they are very very well made systems!  :happy2:

I'll be selling a non-resonated milltek cat back in the next few days

Another vote for bcs here :)

My last one made a really nice with just a pipewerx decat and the rest of the system was standard. Defiently felt like it went better too. You can get stainless cat back systems for £250 on eBay that are resonated. Not seen or heard one myself... Just a thought

Pipe werx sell a down pipe with sports cat on eBay for £475, mated to your standard system they sound deeper and you'll be losing the power restriction at the same time! Within budget too!

Just get eBay downpipe with decat :)

Do some more overtime & buy a bcs full system
You won't be disappointed mate..

Arrgh decisions decisions!!!
Doesn't seem to be many votes for getting a catback system at all then?

Even more undecided now!!
Title: Re: Exhaust time!
Post by: AJG09 on July 03, 2015, 11:10:19 am
Nothing wrong with just a catback. All depends on what you want from it. I wanted more noise so I got a catback, then I can get a down pipe at a later date to make it a full tbe right before I get a remap. Its all personal preference as to what you want from the exhaust.  :happy2:

Full BCS Powervalve TBE with decat or 200 Cell cat, end off.

Full BCS Powervalve TBE with decat or 200 Cell cat, end off.
Undoubtedly one of the best, if not the best option out there.

Just a big chunk of money.

Their downpipe and sports cat alone is 6/700 quid.

I think personally I'll look at more affordable downpipes and sports cats when the time comes for Stage 2 and upwards.

Anyone have any graphs of the gains to be had with different downpipe / cat options? Ie Milltek, Eurojet, Ebay special, BCS, oem precat delete etc?

Would be good to see how they stack up against each other.

Op

With your budget Id smash the Precat out and mate your OEM downpipe to a BCS Sport system.

Speak to Nige, mention the forum and a discount will be yours, can't remember what % it is but a Sport Cat back will be around £500!  :happy2:

Video of my mates old gti with pipewerx downpipe and standard cat back, couldn't hear it in the car, no drone at all, could really feel the power gains, really nice sound under load with your foot down

That just a decat, at the time of the video there were no other mod's to the car at all

Depends on if your just after sound, maximum performance, quality and look.

You can get decat down pipes for as little as £120 all the way to £300 on eBay if not more and then cat back systems can start around £250 again on eBay.

Most performance will be gained from a good downpipe/decat. On the golf in the video with the decat it didn't make a huge performance difference as it was standard at the time but the car did pull better.

If your on a budget and want a nicer sound then I'd get a downpipe for now and keep looking on eBay and in for sale section on here for a cat back exhaust.

Hey Dan
We can offer you the Sports Cat Back at £490.00 with the forum member discount.
For this you are getting around 30% more system than our competetors, with our system mating right up behind the cat on the stock DP.
With the step down reducer, being removable, the system is easy to upgrade to the full Turbo Back when funds allow.
Cheers

Fuming!!!!! :sad1:

Just rang my insurance company (Hastings direct) and they said I can't be covered by them if want this mod???!!

Apparently I need to be 25 if I want to change the exhaust!?!?!

Half tempted to cancel the policy and go elsewhere, but I'm 5 months into the policy and would have to start a new year for my NCD

I had the Miltek none resonated cat back system.

Bought it on here for £450 I think.

Sold it one month after fitting.  In my opinion I would keep stock until it rusted through rather than remove the OEM item for one of these.

I then bought a full TBE BCS unit.  not the power valve one, but 3" all the way through.

I love it.  I like simplicity so kept away from the power valve concept as in my eyes there is something that could go wrong here.  (It may not but I like longevity!)

Get another insurance policy and a decent unit.  Am in York if you want to here it for real!' :drinking:

That sounds lovely have to admit!!
Just not sure I want to cancel my policy and lose half a years NCD!

And thanks for the offer, but York's a bit far for me!

No don't cancel it.

You can try the old trick of "this company offered me cheaper insurance with the exhaust. Can you match it otherwise i'll go with them. see what they say"

IF not what is half a year anyway? its nearly xmas as it is lol

Why did you sell the milltek mate? As this is what I was going to be purchasing next month / November. Lack of power? Lack of noise?

More than happy with my non res milltek cat back. Looks the part and isn't too loud unless put your foot down. Still a nice deep note with general driving.

So, which exhaust out of the milltek catback and bcs is loudest?

BCS is louder.

Check out some youtube videos. BCS if you want the best of the best i guess.

Our systems can be custom specced to suit individual requirements - ranging from the Prestige which is just above stock to our sport system which we believe is the 'Goldilocks' solution right up to a reduced length front silencer or deleted front silencer.
call me for further details.

Hi Nige,

What is your number sorry?
Probably won't be looking to do this until about November/December time, which will give me time to save up for it.

I went from a standard exhaust set up to a milltek cat back (non res) and later a full turbo back exhaust with the sports cat. It wasn't cheap but the build quality is very good and the noise is exactly what I wanted. It's certainly not subtle!

This is tempting...

I'd love a full system but money really doesn't allow at the minute. If I could get 'half' now and the rest when funds allow that'd be great just to get a bit more noise and keep me happy!

Old exhaust needed chopping just after cat. No joiners there.

There is only 1 other join in the standard system.

You won't be disappointed.

I gave up with trying to jack it up as the access was awful. There was a rent a ramp place 15 mins from me that I planned on using but it shut down the other day due to a break in and loads of stuff stolen :( paid my local exhaust place to fit it for me instead.

Use ramps... I drove the front of mine on to ramps and did the downpipe then off and reversed up to do the rest of the exhaust. It wasn't exactly spacious but plenty of room to do the job.

Thread revival but got a mk5 for my fiancée during the week as a surprise present (hopefully she likes it but if not.... I've bought myself a GTI to keep all for myself )

Friend is breaking his one and has a cat back Miltek system that I can get for 4-500 euro.
Worth it or be better off saving for a prestige BCS system? :)

Dont want the car overly loud as it'll just draw attention to her when driving it but she does like abit of noise (intake pipe fell off the airbox in her current car creating lots of induction noise and loves it lol as well as absolutely loves how the full Supersprint race system sounds on my E46 M3. Granted, that's already winning being a straight six NA lol)

Mmmmmmm, SuperSprint.  I love their systems.  Their R32 header and system package sounded incredible, but their pricing is somewhat  :surprised:

If you want quiet, make sure you get a system with a resonator and a large secondary cat (if you fit a DP).

They're all much of a muchness really, but from personal experience, I would steer clear of Milltek.

Haha, the M3 does sound nice with the Supersprint in fairness but indeed not a cheap exhaust. I was lucky to get it cheap from the factory in Italy as an ex demo and test exhaust. Its full Supersprint V2 stepped manifolds, 100 cell race cats, center section and lightweight race rear section. I've a CSL carbon airbox then too that makes noise at the other end :)

Those systems are lovely, Nige! Reckon the first type with the rolled tips would be the pens if go for.
How much roughly would a full turbo back prestige system be?

Turbo back Prestige with the 100 Cell road legal cat would be £1121.18 inc VAT but I prefer the Sport (Fitted to our demo Mk5) £1084.05 inc VAT
