Title: Tdi sleeper
Post by: Joelewis55 on June 19, 2016, 03:24:15 pm
I'm new to the forum, had my golf a year now and really pleased with it! I have came from having a polo obsession (6 including a turbo'd g40) when I was younger to growing up and finding a liking for dirty diesels. Which helps as a travel a fair bit now.
Got it standard when I worked at volkswagen main dealer on 80,000 miles. Did a history check and found out it had the full engine replaced at 20,000 miles due to taking in water. Since then I've added a few little bits myself.
Here's what I've done so far:
Shark fin ariel
Kenwood dnx525dab head unit
Fitted cruise control
Front wings replaced by vwEd30 rear bumper
Passat alloy front arms poly bushed camber adjustable bushes
Passat r36 rear arb (not yet fitted)
Audi tts front brakes
Smoothed front number plate surround with black badge
De cat downpipe, egr delete, remap to 185bhp
Short shift gear linkage and Mk6 golf R gear knob
Here's a few pictures nothing special...

Welcome to the forum from another gttdi owner, some good mods so far you have done

Now fitted my r36 rear anti roll bar not expecting much of a difference but it works really well with the poly bushed front end and powerflex anti lift kit.
Koni rear shocks are next on the list as I've got one leaking (as per usual on these). Here's some car park pics..

Yes Chris, I want a gtb1756 turbo kit and full exhaust. Hopefully be done by the end of the year. Looking at getting the kit from profideisel at mapping at narco hopefully to around 240bhp

Added a intake silicone hose as my plastic one was split, and a little sticker... oh and MY BIG TURBO ARRIVED! Getting fitted next week and mapping Tuesday more to follow.

So gtb1756 went on nicely, took it over to narco tuning and got them to map it and make an oil return pipe, left it with them, got a phone call the next day saying it's all sorted and it's made 250bhp! They had to limit the torque due to standard clutch and flywheel so as soon as that's replaced it can be adjusted.
So first impressions I'm very pleased with it, little smoke, pulls so hard from around 2000rpm all the way round now! Rev's so well and is such a smooth drive still really happy with it.

Wow, it's quite the sleeper. Love that it looks like a bog standard 140/170. Any plans for the outside/body?

Good to see another dieseler on here. I've been through a 140 GTTDi (182bhp), a 170 GTTDi (204bhp) and now onto a Octavia vRS CR (210bhp).

Not a fan of diesels but i do like this!!

Can just imagine the faces of drivers when you fly past them :D

Looks like a nice map. What made you go for the 1756 over a 2260? Would you need more hardware upgrades?

Anyway, I can imagine that drives very nicely. Funny how there doesn't seem to be a huge difference in the curves of a GTB BKD and a k03 GTI at similar power. The petrol car will obviously rev a bit more, but I reckon your car would have a good go against mine (maybe before the Stage 2 map)

Not really any major plans for bodywork atm, I like the idea of it being a bit of a sleeper.
Went for that turbo because I feel like it's all I need, ticked all the right boxes.
Yeah a friend who not a fan of diesels said it feels like a petrol. The way it Rev's and picks up.
I'm looking for gti rear brake setup if anyone knows of anything for sale? cheers Joe

Hi @Joelewis55 (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=14534) loving that dyno printout! I'm in the dilemma where I don't know if I should go GTB2260 on tubular manifold initially with standard injectors for around 230BHP with the prospect of 300BHP with +120% injectors and Sachs SRE clutch next year, or just be sensible and go cast manifold + 1756 and stock clutch with similar figures to you. I guess your turbo and map has cost less than 1000 quid?

Cheers

Stu

Done some more bits to this recently, need to take a few more pictures but here's what I've done.
Firstly I had a boost hose split, the turbo outlet pipe so replaced that, pictures also show the insert I removed to fit onto the larger turbo.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fhh627%2Fjoelewi55%2F20161230_141544_zpsolibotpq.jpg&hash=85e950e279bb302e4c2378b8bdc1867c9ac1af79)
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fhh627%2Fjoelewi55%2F20161229_112300_zpschyfdrag.jpg&hash=1a7210a2a72ae496f3a44dc2020686909a9660f7)
Then I got a 2.5" straight through exhaust system (to match the 2.5"decat downpipe) made with a single silencer and a centre hidden tip. Still need to get photos of this but it makes a nice sound especially with the popcorn limiter. Although not too loud when normal driving so perfect really!
But I was still losing boost so I got an s3 alloy intercooler and fitted that. No pic's but you all know what it looks like and it's hidden anyway.
Then my clutch started slipping and dual mass was rattling. Ive done 10,000 miles since bigger turbo was fitted, unknown milage on standard clutch but I have done 35,000 on it with between 180bhp and 250bhp (140bhp standard). So I fitted a darkside billet single mass and sachs race clutch kit.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fhh627%2Fjoelewi55%2FDarkside_Billet_02Q_SMF_SRE_Organic_Disc__19497.1445354720.400.300_zpsqoa35jk2.jpg&hash=7d2c16277029e1da02533d0076ac70bfbfc91c57)
Pedal is heavier and you do get a rattle at idle up to around 1500rpm then it dissappear's.
Diffinately felt a big difference with this cars pulls a lot harder. So with this fitted I can go back for mapping adjustments at Narco.
Hopefully with the less restricted exhaust, s3 intercooler and new clutch + flywheel set up I can get a few more ponies and torque should increase from 320lb/ft to around 400lb/ft!
Still keeping it stealthy
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fhh627%2Fjoelewi55%2F20170212_120501_zps7qt7qvgm.jpg&hash=5eefa53d17bafd4056c7407781fec2ff513bcbba)

Future plans after mapping on Monday are to do a top end rebuild, as engine has done 100,000miles now. So will be replacing all gaskets and seals cleaning head ports etc and also adding darkside developments stronger valve springs as it likes to rev so much. Contemplated arp head studs but don't think they are worth it.
Let me know what you think, I will post pictures of exhaust and new dyno figures on Monday hopefully.

Nice, this much be loads of fun. I had a PD130 mk4 mapped to just over 180bhp and that felt nippy enough. The torque must be addictive!

Looking forward to the future plans.  :happy2:

Not a lot has happened with the golf recently, mapping couldn't get done due to injector issues, so I replaced faulty injectors and fault was still present, so need to change the loom and recheck injector deviation.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fhh627%2Fjoelewi55%2FIMG-20170510-WA0003_zpsi01e2k9y.jpeg&hash=2f173a709121177f4354c7ad6dc3028c626c7b5a)
I have purchased a tt rear axle which I intend to clean up, re paint and bolt on. This will make my rear end 30mm wider. And mine is getting pretty rusty, as with a lot of others I've seen!
Been looking at getting either polar fis and a scirocco instrument cluster, which I'm leaning toward atm, or a p3 gauge. Any information or advise with either would be greatly appreciated.
I have done a couple of things though! Made myself a little inlet scoop, Im thinking of using this as a mould for a carbon fibre model.

And I saved my self some money by cleaning my wheels with some proper products, plus some hard work and saved my self needing a refurb, on 2 of them at least.. and got some Bridgestone drive guard tyres, not sure I like them as much as I liked the previous Bridgestone run flats though.

So just going to update this as it's been a while and there's a few new bits.
Engine bay now has a few changes, vwr filter fitted, Bentley filler cap, odyssey pc1100
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1255.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fhh627%2Fjoelewi55%2FMobile%2520Uploads%2F20181209_122212_zpsktbzlqse.jpg&hash=a05a0ddc6209b7524373c2de04a494cbf3a54548) (http://s1255.photobucket.com/user/joelewi55/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20181209_122212_zpsktbzlqse.jpg.html)

Also did a few service bits and fitted mk7 clubsport discs with red stuff pads (got given the pads)
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1255.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fhh627%2Fjoelewi55%2FMobile%2520Uploads%2FSnapchat-131342044_zpskgtvlwgr.jpg&hash=e88e50cc6707f152df2b59a763bf7efeb32b2ad3) (http://s1255.photobucket.com/user/joelewi55/media/Mobile%20Uploads/Snapchat-131342044_zpskgtvlwgr.jpg.html)

Did a 3000 mile road trip around Europe and cooked my brakes round the ring that's the main reason for trying a different brake setup. These are a lot better vented and lighter too.

The front springs are from AST suspension and only drop the front around 15mm, the rear springs are audi TT springs, the ride height and spring rate are a pretty good match, although shocks would improve handling I'd imagine.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1255.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fhh627%2Fjoelewi55%2FMobile%2520Uploads%2F20180623_152033_zpsodqznygn.jpg&hash=0ce6b27e03e2564d2d72492d6b6d53ddc9c491be) (http://s1255.photobucket.com/user/joelewi55/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20180623_152033_zpsodqznygn.jpg.html)

I also upgraded the rear brakes to the ones I had off the TT rear axle I bought a a while ago, I think they are similar size to gti rears. This was because I had a siezed standard caliper. Although no pictures of the rears, I will be changing the brake fluid for high temperatures dot 4 soon.
Here's some nurburg pictures

We went end of may and the snow hadn't been cleared off the road all the way to the top which was a shame but we had to go that time of year to see Worthersee.
I've also fitted a hard pipe kit as I kept having issues with the standard pipe work.
Fitted high line clocks a while ago in preparation for polar fis, which I've recently fitted along with a multi function steering wheel.
So basically it's still a bad ass sleeper and I still love it.
I'll add some more pictures soon!

I believe the Mk7 clubsport discs will have a lot more cooling, from the pictures i see some directional vanes. They make a lot of difference.  :happy2:

Added an APR carbon intake today and made some adjustments to some of the boost pipes. Also made a little carbon 'shield' next to the tandem pump as it gets fairly hot. Think I'll be wrapping the inlet pipe with heat wrap too eventually.
After monitoring temperatures on my dash with polar fis, the intake temp used to sit 2 degrees c above ambient, and whilst the hammer was down it would raise obviously, but my main concern was sitting in traffic/stationary the inlet temps would creep up really high!
I actually had to change the radiator top pipe as the boxes are made for tfsi.

Next I'll be adding a btcc front intercooler scoop. And I have a vibra technics dog bone mount bush to go in. Oh and some body work due to corrosion.
