Title: Cruise control not working 🙁
Post by: Sk_islam1 on August 10, 2019, 09:33:06 pm
Hello Everyone,
I an new here and dont know much about cars.
I have a golf mkv 2006. Tried the cruise control and its not working anymore.
It was working fine few months ago. Nothing has changed that I think may have caused it. Its box standard car no modifications. I have searched for some videos on youtube and opened the stack with the control switch. The switch seems ok nothing broken inside. Also the cables seem fine. Cables are soldered btw and no connector.
Trying pressing the clutch and break and releasing and turning the switch on and off. No lights on dashboard.
I understand that a diagnostics will tel me whats wrong with it. But the car is too old and spending £60 with the dealer cant be justified for it.

Please can someone help me with advises as to what I can check to find the fault is by myself and not spending a lot of money. Any advise will be appreciated.

Thanks,
Sheikh

Take the switch back out, undo the two torx screws which will release the circuit board from the plastic bits.
Get some contact cleaner and a bit of kitchen roll or cloth and clean the contact pads on the circuit board. Do the same for the little contact "lashes" on the other part of the switch. I also gave mine a gentle bending back to ensure good contact. Reassemble and test.
Just did mine last night, took about 10 minutes.

Picture here of what I mean:

Thanks Chris, my one is soldered directly to the switch via cables rather the connector as shown on your pic. So I will have to unsolder it and then resolder it once cleaned. Shall I do that ? Do you thinks its worth a try ?
I have also ordered a bluetooth OBD2 scanner from ibay. I was gonna use the app to scan for any errors. Seems like several people has tried it and learned what is wrong with their system. Do you think that will work on mine ?

Many Thanks,
Sheikh

Could also be your brake switch at fault

My cruise was out for a while but brake lights where still working.
Scanned with Carista and came up with fault code for switch, so I replaced.

You say your cruise light doesn’t come on though? My light came on but didn’t work

You really need to get a decent fault code reader if you don’t have access to vcds

Thats right. My light does jot come on. I have bought a elm 327 reader and hoping to use an app to see if I can get a fault code. Wish me luck !!

So just connected elm 327 and used 2 apps - tourqe lite and car scanner elm by 0vZ. Later one was easy to use. Both showed not fault found or DTC not found when I read the ECU.
Strange. I was expecting something on cruise control or some other switch may come up but nothing. Is this read trustable ?
Any other advised gents ?

Yes, an ELM327 reader ONLY reads standard OBD2 codes that are stored in the engine ECU (if I remember rightly - it's the basic standard that all cars after a certain age have to comply with, emission controls and such).
VCDS/Vag-Com reads codes from the individual control modules in the car using VW/Audi's specific format. That is while a ELM327 reader will grab things that perhaps turn on an engine fault light, they cannot talk to the other control modules in the car, and sadly VW's are full of them as are all modern cars. It won't tell you faults with the central locking, or radio, or the central convenience module for example - specifically the cruise control is managed by the steering wheel module and you cannot retrieve data from it by "talking" in OBD2 to it.
Think of it like this, your ELM reader has enough info to talk to the engine ECU in a format it understands and ask it to send data, it doesn't have the information on how to talk to the steering wheel, hence you see no faults.
You either have to use VCDS, ODBEleven or Carista (there may be others, I don't know them all) to speak to the VW specific systems.

Someone local to you may be able to help retrieve the code with access to VCDS.

As an example this is what mine came back with when the cruise wasn't working and how I figured it was the switch itself ;)

Thanks Chris for this informative reply. This makes total sense now. Question is now should I pay someone to read the code for me or just buy the device myself.
Thanks for the explanation. It was very helpful.

May be able to find someone local to you here:

Though VCDS is a worthwhile investment for any VW/Audi/Seat/Skoda owner in my opinion, not just for fault diagnosis but for coding extra settings on your car.
