Title: Josh’s Pirelli edition
Post by: Bodyboarder81 on November 04, 2017, 02:46:30 pm
Hi all

Just saying hi and introducing myself and my car/family

Bought this little Pirelli edition from a forum member ( flashp) so all credit to him , as he’s spent a small fortune on quality mods and proper maintenance  from Jkm . Many moons ago I had a ibiza cupra r and Jkm done all the mods /maintenance for me , so seeing as they looked after this car was a big factor in the purchase .

The car has a great list of mods
Bilstein b12 kit
Eibach arb’s
Wavetrack lsd
S3 brakes front and rear
Whiteline anti lift kit
ttrs wishbones
Full milltek exhaust
Revo dsg map
Revo remap
And some other bits and bobs

Already made a few changes to it .

Had a revo induction kit put on ( had one in originally but previous owner sold it before I could ) and a map tweek by Jkm.

Also while it was there had new engine mounts fitted and a main thermostat ,as I noticed the water temp was not getting up as it should .

Had the cam follower checked over and a general look over from the good chaps at Jkm as well .

Fitted a set of bbs Wheels ( same as the edition 30’s just slightly lower offset)

A new Kenwood/vw specific head unit

Milltek non res section

I bought another Honda S2000 about a year ago and came across a beauty ...

12 Honda stamps ,3 owners ,26k on the clock and in pretty good condition. Had the car paint corrected and ceramic coated straight away . Then made a few small changes . Put a set of ohlins suspension on , AP racing BBK , Wheels along with some ad08r’s which really transformed the car . Had a few bits done in alcantara in the interior as well . Absolutely loved the summer in the car and done a couple of track days which the car was faultless........

.....then I was getting itchy feet .... always wanted a Porsche .. the time was right ,had a healthy budget for either a cayman 981 s or 997.2 s..... test drove some , almost pulled the trigger but I would have to sell the S2k to afford it ... in the end I just couldn’t let the S2k go !

I really do love it , just such a good affordable, fun, reliable, honest sports car . With the right amount of power to really be able to thrash it and not get into too much trouble .

So decided to garage the S2k and look for something fun to go along side it . We have a family car and I have a work van , so didn’t really need anything too practical. I did however want 4 seats so I could take the kids if needed .

Decided on a hot hatch as they are fun , cheap and practical..... short list was clio 200 Rs , golf gti ,r32,s3,

Obviously ended up with the Pirelli

Not got huge plans for the golf as flashp has done most of it for me !

I’ll end up getting a Loba/apr fuel pump and a set of ohlins I suspect . Mainly just keep it in tip top condition and enjoy  :driver:

Lovely car mate.

I noticed stuff like an updated fuel pump was already on the car but it was up for sale with some of the mods still attached at lower price or with all the mods slightly higher, did you come across the car when you had the opportunity to decide either?
Still a great spec mind!

I did see it for sale when it had all the bits and bobs on at around 13.5 I think . I just didn’t really entertain it at that price and the AP racing BBK and Wheels didn’t really interest me as I already had a car that was track ready . I New the golf was never going to see a track in my ownership so was a bit overkill ..... but once it came down to what I was happy with ( paid £10500 ) with most of the good stuff ( and all the stuff I would want to do to make it a good road car ) still on the car it made sense . If I’d bought a good standard edition 30/Pirelli for say for 8-9 k with the same sort of miles ( 55k ) I would have spent way more than 2-3k on getting it to this cars spec ..... the lsd alone was nearly £1800 fitted !!

Yes the S2k’s are a very special little cars . I urge anyone who hasn’t driven /owned one to do so , as for fun factor and handling they blow the golf ( well mine anyway ) out the water ..... it’s strange , the golf I have is very well setup and is way faster down pretty much any road compared to the S2k but somehow the Honda just feel better /right .... flame suit at the ready  :signLOL:

Yes they are made for the smaller person that’s for sure ..... I’m not big and still feel like I sit on it , rather than in it . I’m having the seats /door cards ,bits and bobs redone in alcantara soon and there’s a company that make a lower seat rail which I’ll purchase . It lowers the seat by an inch but costs around £270 delivered from japan !

Yeah I know, I looked into it myself is it BYS (back yard special) seat bracket? I nearly went down the Recaro pole position seats route as this gave the best drop and position but £££
I then moved it on and got my Pirelli  :happy2:

Not really done anything to the golf .... was originally looking for a apr/Loba fuel pump and go stage 2+ but decided not to , as I feel the car produces the power level for the chassis to cope with . Even with the wavetrack it’s very traction limited in this poor weather . Also was going to go for a set of ohlins ( same as my S2k runs ) but for the intended use of the golf just feel it would be over kill . It already has the Bilstein b12 kit along with eibach anti roll bars , ttrs wishbones , so is a great road going setup . If I were to track the car then I feel this set up is way to soft but I don’t intend to do so .

My tax bill came in at around 10k lower than expected  :pomppomp: so looking into getting a nice mk1 golf to garage and run along side my s2000 .

Where is the best place to start looking for one ? If anyone knows someone who’s thinking of selling , then please get in touch  :happy2:

Ideally looking at one that’s been restored and is more of a show car  ( think low and bbs Wheels style )

Cheers  :drinking:

The problem isn't on the chassis, it's on the wet weather.

You'd need AWD to keep using the engine's power with wet roads.

Yes completely agree ....  it as soon as the better weather comes I’ll be out and about in the S2k .... so seems silly to chase more power / better chassis in the golf ..... plus I want a mk1

I fitted a CR radio door in mine and as it was a 53 plate, swopped all the interior over to the newer style like your, the centre console is a massive improvement over the old one, and I even swapped out the dash pod surround as it came in that silver grey...uurrggh

great looking interior and a fantastic little car which I think will rise in value no end, keep hold of it, no doubt I will kick myself In a few years for letting mine go.

Had some vogtland coilovers fitted the other day and then went for a 4 wheel alignment.

Have to say I’m very impressed with them!

Was recommended by a few on here to give them a go , so thanks for that !

The car had Bilstein b12 set up and while I was happy with how they drove I wanted them to sit just 10-15mm lower .

Very impressed with the damping on these ... im comparing them to the b12’s but also the ohlins I have on the S2k . They really are a good road going coilover kit . I actually think they ride / feel better than the b12’s .

I will say though that if you track your gti then these are way to soft in spring rate for any serious track action . I have eibach arb’s and I might set them to the harder setting to see if this affectivley gives me a higher spring rate ( less roll ) ...

I’ll have to go for another tweek to the alignment in a few months once they’ve settled fully .

Only issue is I’m getting a slight ( and I’m mean like 1-2mm ) of scrubbing  on the wheel arch . Nothing I can’t fix though .

So all in all very happy chap with them .... I would have even been happy with paying more them to be honest . An absolute bargain for under £500 delivered !

It might well be staying with me ...... surely it shouldn’t be hard to spend 25-30k right ? ‘Mint ‘ cars turning out to be dogs , dealers not getting back to you .. it’s a joke to be honest ! Now I’ve swopped the Wheels back , raised the ride height a bit I’ve sort of fallen a bit for the humble golf again !

Keep it! You have a very well treated Golf right there. One of the very best Mk5's I've ever seen online. At some point these Pirelli's will take off in price...

Yes I am heading that way to be honest ..... I’ve never committed 100% to  selling it , hence it’s not for sale on auto/piston .

I may well splash a bit of cash on some ohlins and ap brakes for it and enjoy for the summer .... possibly look into charging the S2k again ( nearly done it last year but talked myself out of it )

Since I’ve decided to keep the gti for a bit longer , thought I’d splash some cash on the old girl

Test fitted one of my wheels over the s2000 brake kit .... still undersided about it as I think it’s needs a bigger setup and with that comes spacers ect whichbi don’t really want to do ....

So then I ordered these ....

Which should be with me next week .... can’t wait to get them fitted

Great decision on the coilovers. I'd suggest the mk7 GTI Pack Performance brakes for your use. It's OEM, fits under your OEM wheels, red painted and with GTI lettering.

No, is an evolution thereof. Lighter 340mm discs and larger 60mm pistons in calipers.

Probably better off ( for the sake of the difference anyway ) sticking with my setup , along with some 2 piece discs ( either CS discs or mtech ones ) and some decent pads then ....

Forgot you had the R32/S3 calipers. No point paying the extra for the weight difference. Get the 2 piece discs from MTEC, those should be fine, or the more expensive discs from the Clubsport S. :)

Love S2000s  :drinking:   If I hadn't invested so much time and energy into my Golf, an S2000 turbo would be high up my list of other projects.

I know you already have Ohlins on the S2000 but I look forward to your opinion of them on the Golf  :happy2:   I bloody love them!

Don't worry about brakes until you've got the Ohlins on because the dive behaviour (slow speed compression) might be different.

That is exactly what I've felt when changing from my 5 year old B16s to ASTs, Pud. The nose dive behavior is greatly reduced and I'm beginning to feel that the rear brakes are finally doing something :D ...but I'm still reserved until the first trackday.

So unless you really won't to spend the money, just wait until the awesome Ohlins are on.

420 kits not for me .... think I’ve even decided not to go + on my stage 2 . 320 is a great power figure for a small hot hatch ... and with the diff , arbs and soon the ohlins , I can use all the horses in every gear in most situations.

That's fair enough mate, totally understand  :happy2:  Some cars are best enjoyed as they are.  Honda did a fantastic job of the S2000 imo.  Great styling, great engine and great handling.

Yeah Stage 2 is a great stopping point on the ED30.  Plenty of poke.  The chassis is where it's at.  I still think the MK5 is hard to beat.  The MK7 is just so numb.  Capable, but boring.  Too inert and lifeless.

Parts have started to arrive now .... ohlins are in , new graphite bbs VZ Wheels are here ( as I was selling the car I removed the silver bbs Wheels and promised them to someone . I then changed my mind about selling the car but because I’m decent let the chap have  the Wheels still !)

Picking up new top mounts and parts needed from seat tomorrow ( double checked with the part numbers I have for the TT top mounts and seat do them as well ) seat are closer to me than Audi ... so hopefully they are the same !?

Got some millers oil , and for the S2k a back yard special lower seat rail from Japan . Orders this about 4 weeks ago and was told it’s a 2-4 month wait . Another one came up for sale , so bought it ..... to be sent an email a week later saying my one would be with me from Japan in a few days !!

Also test fitted the bbs over the 330mm ap racing kit I have on the s2k.. although not a massive brake kit . This is realistically a road car so should be  a step up over the r32 setup that I have at the moment . I know the general thought is that getting the unsprung weight down is more benificial on a track car than road , but I’m a firm believer that it makes quite a difference on a bumpy B road , as the suspension doesn’t have to work as hard to gain traction/composure . The 4 pot ap set up saves me a massive 9kg per side ! Not ordered it yet as I want to get the suspension set up properly and then do the brakes

You'll notice when you reduce the weight on the wheels. I was able to notice a difference when I fitted alloy front arms which saved me 2 kg per side. :happy2:

I thought I felt a difference also when my alloy arms were fitted however after rationalising that there is probably @50kg of unsprung weight per side I did wonder if it was in my mind?!?Anyhow, a couple of kg each on arms, then hubs, then wheels, then brakes all adds up nicely especially if it is also rotational mass.
Title: Re: Josh’s Pirelli edition
Post by: pudding on April 07, 2018, 10:32:41 am
Yeah it's the reduced rotational mass I notice the most with light wheels.   The 2 front wheels are essentially huge flywheels the gearbox has to spin up.   Years ago when I was wheel weight obsessed, I noticed Continental Sport Contacts were a fair bit lighter than their competitors.  Nobody considers tyre weight when factoring in unsprung mass reductions  :happy2:

Another thing with tyres is their true running.  Cheaper brands tend to be slightly egg shaped and cause balancing issues, but again, I've always found Contisports to run the truest!

Get those Ohlins on already!

Good to hear you're still on here,
I saw your Pirelli once at JKM when mine was having Revo Stage 1 applied - looked a mint car - I think it was under the previous ownership though. Looked great with the Oz's, Alcon's...
How come you've gone for another RWD coupe - I'd have thought the S2000 would be more than enough of a handful?

A T6 transporter , which I’ve kitted out with some wheels , suspension, stereo etc , again had that over 2 years now ( how time flys !!) we love this van , so useful and done a few camping trips away in it . Last but not least a lotus Elise . Had that a year now and it’s an amazing car … but only managed 1200 miles in it !
